It was just an ordinary Saturday.

And as I came upstairs to get something to drink,

I looked out the window

and realized that there was something that I was supposed to be doing,

and this is what I saw.

No, this wasn't my family's dinner on fire.

이건 저녁식사에 불이 붙은 게 아니예요.

This was my science project.

제 과학 프로젝트였어요.

Flames were pouring out,

불길이 치솟고

smoke was in the air

연기가 피어오르고

and it looked like our wooden deck was about to catch fire.

나무 판에 불이 옮겨 붙을 것처럼 보였어요.

I immediately started yelling.

곧바로 소리를 질렀는데

My mom was freaking out,

엄마는 당황했고

my dad ran around to put out the fire

아빠는 불을 끄러 뛰어다니시고

and of course my sister started recording a Snapchat video.

여동생은 물론 스냅챗 영상을 찍고 있었죠.

This was just the beginning of my team's science project.

이건 우리팀의 과학 프로젝트의 시작에 불과했어요.

My team is composed of me and three other students

저희 팀은 저와 세 명의 학생으로 되어있어요.

who are here in the audience today.

We competed in FIRST LEGO League

우리는 퍼스트 레고 리그에 참가했는데

which is an international LEGO robotics competition for kids,

아이들의 국제 레고 로봇 대회이자

and in addition to a robotics game,

we also worked on a separate science project,

우리는 각각의 과학 프로젝트를 수행했고

and this was the project that we were working on.

So the idea for this project all started

when a few months earlier,

a couple of my teammates took a trip to Central America

and saw beaches littered with Styrofoam,

And when they came back and told us about it,

we really started thinking about the ways in which we see Styrofoam every day.

Get a new flat-screen TV?

You end up with a block of Styrofoam bigger than the TV itself.

Drink a cup of coffee?

Well, those Styrofoam coffee cups are sure going to add up.

스티로폼 커피컵이 쌓이게 되요.

And where do all these items go after their one-time use?

이런 물건들은 한 번 쓴 뒤 어디로 갈까요?

Since there aren't any good existing solutions for used Styrofoam,

사용된 스티로폼에 대한 좋은 처리 방안이 없어서

almost all of them end up right in the landfill,

대부분은 매립지로 가요.

or the oceans and beaches,

바다나 해변으로도요.

taking over 500 years to degrade.

분해되는데는 500년이 넘게 걸려요.

And in fact, every year, the US alone

produces over two billion pounds of Styrofoam,

filling up a staggering 25 percent of landfills.

So why do we have these ghost accumulations of Styrofoam waste?

Why can't we just recycle them like many plastics?

Well, simply put, recycled polystyrene is too expensive

and potentially contaminated,

so there is very little market demand for Styrofoam that has to be recycled.

And as a result, Styrofoam is considered a nonrenewable material,

because it is neither feasible nor viable to recycle polystyrene.

And in fact, many cities across the US

But what if we could keep using Styrofoam

and keep benefiting from its cheap, lightweight, insulating

and excellent packing ability,

while not having to suffer from the repercussions

What if we could turn it into something else that's actually useful?

What if we could make the impossible possible?

My team hypothesized that we could use the carbon that's already in Styrofoam

우리팀은 오늘날 거의 모든 정수기 필터에 사용되고 있는

to create activated carbon,

활성탄을 만드는 데에 스티로롬 속 탄소를

which is used in almost every water filter today.

활용할 수 있다고 가정했어요.

And activated carbon works by using very small micropores

to filter out contaminants from water or even air.

So we started out by doing a variety of heating tests,

and unfortunately, we had many failures.

Literally, nothing worked.

Besides my dad's grill catching on fire,

most of our samples vaporized into nothing,

or exploded inside expensive furnaces,

leaving a horribly sticky mess.

In fact, we were so saddened by our failures that we almost gave up.

So why did we keep trying

when all the adults said it was impossible?

Well, maybe it's because we're kids. We don't know any better.

But the truth is, we kept trying because we thought it was still possible.

하지만 진실은, 우리는 가능하다고 믿었기 때문이에요.

We knew that if we were successful,

우리가 성공만 한다면

we would be helping the environment and making the world a better place.

환경을 돕고 세상을 더 나은 곳으로 바꿀 수 있으니까요.

So we kept trying

우리는 계속 시도했고

and failing

실패했고

and trying

시도했고

and failing.

실패했어요.

We were so ready to give up.

포기할 생각도 했어요.

But then it happened.

그 때 일어난 거예요.

With the right temperatures, times and chemicals,

알맞은 온도, 시간, 화학물질로

we finally got that successful test result

성공적인 실험결과를 얻게 되었어요.

showing us that we had created activated carbon from Styrofoam waste.

스티로폼 쓰레기로 활성탄을 만들었다는 것을 보여주었어요.

And at that moment, the thing that had been impossible

그 순간, 불가능했던 무언가가

all of a sudden wasn't.

갑자기 가능해진 거예요.

It showed us that although we had many failures at the beginning,

we were able to persevere through them to get the test results that we wanted.

And moreover, not only were we able to create activated carbon

게다가, 활성탄을 만들어

for purifying water,

but we were also able to reduce Styrofoam waste,

solving two global problems with just one solution.

So from then on, we were inspired to take our project further,

performing more tests to make it more effective

and testing it in real world situations.

We then proceeded to receive funding

And we were also honored

with the Scientific American Innovator Award

from Google Science Fair.

And using these funds, we plan to file a full patent on our process

후원자금을 사용해서 과정에 대한 특허권을 신청할 계획이에요.

and to continue to work on our project.

그리고 프로젝트를 계속할 거예요.

So yes, although we started with catching my dad's grill on fire

그래요, 아빠 그릴을 태워먹으면서 시작을 했고

and failing so many times that we almost quit,

너무 많이 실패해서 거의 그만 둘 뻔했지만

it was well worth it when we look back at it now.

지금 돌이켜 보면 해볼만한 일이었어요.

We took a problem that many people said was impossible

and we made it possible,

and we persevered when it looked like nothing that we did would work.

We learned that you can't have success

or a lot, of failure.

혹은 수많은 실패없이는 성공할 수 없다는 것을요.

So in the future, don't be afraid if your grill goes up in flames,

앞으로 여러분의 그릴에 불이 붙더라도 두려워하지 마세요.

because you never know when your idea might just catch fire.
