Three years ago, I was standing about a hundred yards

from Chernobyl nuclear reactor number four.

My Geiger counter dosimeter, which measures radiation,

I was there covering the 25th anniversary

of the world's worst nuclear accident,

as you can see by the look on my face,

reluctantly so, but with good reason,

because the nuclear fire that burned for 11 days

back in 1986 released 400 times as much radiation

as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima,

and the sarcophagus, which is the covering

over reactor number four,

which was hastily built 27 years ago,

now sits cracked and rusted

and leaking radiation.

So I was filming.

I just wanted to get the job done

早く仕事を終えて

and get out of there fast.

立ち去りたい一心でした

But then, I looked into the distance,

ところが遠くを見ると

and I saw some smoke coming from a farmhouse,

農家から煙が 立ち上っています

and I'm thinking, who could be living here?

こんな所に住む人が いるのでしょうか？

I mean, after all, Chernobyl's soil, water and air,

ここは土壌も水も空気も 地球上で —

are among the most highly contaminated on Earth,

最も汚染された場所なのです

and the reactor sits at the the center of

原子炉 周辺は

a tightly regulated exclusion zone, or dead zone,

立ち入りが厳しく規制された 「デッド・ゾーン」で

and it's a nuclear police state, complete with border guards.

警備員がいる様子は まるで核の警察国家です

You have to have dosimeter at all times, clicking away,

鳴り止まない線量計の携帯と

you have to have a government minder,

役人の同行が必要な上に

and there's draconian radiation rules

厳格な放射線規制と

and constant contamination monitoring.

The point being, no human being

要はデッド・ゾーン付近に

should be living anywhere near the dead zone.

人間は住めないはず・・・

But they are.

でも実際には いるのです

It turns out an unlikely community

あり得ないことですが

of some 200 people are living inside the zone.

およそ200人がゾーン内で 暮らしていたのです

They're called self-settlers.

「自主入植者」達です

And almost all of them are women,

ほぼ全員が女性なのは

the men having shorter lifespans

男性の寿命が短いからです

in part due to overuse of alcohol, cigarettes,

放射能のせいでなければ

if not radiation.

大量の酒とタバコが原因でしょう

Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated

事故当時 数十万人が

at the time of the accident,

避難命令を受けましたが

but not everybody accepted that fate.

全員が指示に従った わけではありません

The women in the zone, now in their 70s and 80s,

ゾーンに住む女性達は 今や70〜80才代ですが

are the last survivors of a group who defied authorities

政府にも常識にも反発して

and, it would seem, common sense,

先祖代々の故郷に

and returned to their ancestral homes inside the zone.

戻った人々の 最後の生き残りです

They did so illegally.

As one woman put it to a soldier

ある女性は 避難を促す兵士に

who was trying to evacuate her for a second time,

"Shoot me and dig the grave.

「私を撃って 墓に埋めるんだね

Otherwise, I'm going home."

でなきゃ 私は家に帰るよ」

Now why would they return to such deadly soil?

なぜ汚染された土地に 帰りたがるのでしょう？

I mean, were they unaware of the risks

危険を知らないのか —

or crazy enough to ignore them, or both?

あえて無視したのか その両方か？

The thing is, they see their lives

確かなのは 生き方や危険の

and the risks they run decidedly differently.

捉え方が 私達とは 明らかに違うということです

Now around Chernobyl, there are scattered ghost villages,

チェルノブイリ周辺には 無人の村が点在しています

eerily silent, strangely charming, bucolic,

不気味な静けさと 不思議な田舎の魅力がありますが

totally contaminated.

完全に汚染されています

Many were bulldozed under at the time of the accident,

村の多くは事故直後に 更地にされましたが

but a few are left like this,

kind of silent vestiges to the tragedy.

Others have a few residents in them,

one or two "babushkas," or "babas,"

which are the Russian and Ukrainian words for grandmother.

Another village might have six or seven residents.

So this is the strange demographic of the zone --

isolated alone together.

And when I made my way to that piping chimney

I'd seen in the distance,

I saw Hanna Zavorotnya, and I met her.

ハンナ・ザヴォロティナに 出会いました

She's the self-declared mayor of Kapavati village,

population eight.

(Laughter)

And she said to me, when I asked her the obvious,

"Radiation doesn't scare me. Starvation does."

And you have to remember, these women have

survived the worst atrocities of the 20th century.

Stalin's enforced famines of the 1930s, the Holodomor,

killed millions of Ukrainians,

and they faced the Nazis in the '40s,

who came through slashing, burning, raping,

and in fact many of these women

were shipped to Germany as forced labor.

So when a couple decades into Soviet rule,

and fathers and babies,

the whisper of stork wings on a spring afternoon.

For them, environmental contamination

彼女達にとって 環境汚染など

may not be the worst sort of devastation.

災厄のうちには 入らないのでしょう

It turns out this holds true

同じことは

for other species as well.

動物にも当てはまります

Wild boar, lynx, moose, they've all returned

野生のイノシシや オオヤマネコや ヘラジカが

to the region in force,

大挙して戻ってきました

the very real, very negative effects of radiation

being trumped by the upside of a mass exodus

The dead zone, it turns out, is full of life.

And there is a kind of heroic resilience,

a kind of plain-spoken pragmatism to those

who start their day at 5 a.m.

朝５時に起きて

pulling water from a well

and end it at midnight

poised to beat a bucket with a stick

and scare off wild boar that might mess with their potatoes,

their only company a bit of homemade moonshine vodka.

And there's a patina of simple defiance among them.

"They told us our legs would hurt, and they do. So what?"

I mean, what about their health?

The benefits of hardy, physical living,

but an environment made toxic

by a complicated, little-understood enemy, radiation.

It's incredibly difficult to parse.

Health studies from the region

are conflicting and fraught.

The World Health Organization

puts the number of Chernobyl-related deaths

at 4,000, eventually.

Greenpeace and other organizations

put that number in the tens of thousands.

Now everybody agrees that thyroid cancers

are sky high, and that Chernobyl evacuees

suffer the trauma of relocated peoples everywhere:

higher levels of anxiety, depression, alcoholism,

unemployment and, importantly,

disrupted social networks.

Now, like many of you,

I have moved maybe 20, 25 times in my life.

Home is a transient concept.

I have a deeper connection to my laptop

than any bit of soil.

ノートPCに絆を感じるほどです

So it's hard for us to understand, but home

そんな私達には 理解しにくいですが

is the entire cosmos of the rural babushka,

バブーシュカ達にとって 故郷は世界であり

and connection to the land is palpable.

土地への愛着は明白です

And perhaps because these Ukrainian women

ウクライナ出身の彼女達は

were schooled under the Soviets

ソビエト政権下で教育され

and versed in the Russian poets,

ロシアの詩人達に親しんできたためか

aphorisms about these ideas

土地との絆を

slip from their mouths all the time.

いつも口にしていました

"If you leave, you die."

「故郷から離れれば 死んでしまう」

"Those who left are worse off now.

「去った人の暮らしはひどく

They are dying of sadness."

悲しみながら死んでいく」

"Motherland is motherland. I will never leave."

「故郷は故郷 絶対に出て行かない」

What sounds like faith, soft faith,

単なる信念だと 思うかも知れませんが

may actually be fact,

ここには事実が含まれています

because the surprising truth --

驚くべき真実があるのです

I mean, there are no studies, but the truth seems to be

正式な研究ではありませんが

that these women who returned to their homes

彼女達が故郷に戻り

and have lived on some of the most radioactive land

過去27年間も

on Earth for the last 27 years,

世界一 放射線量が高い 場所に住んできたのに

have actually outlived their counterparts

移住した人々に比べて

who accepted relocation,

長生きなのです

by some estimates up to 10 years.

How could this be?

なぜでしょうか？

Here's a theory: Could it be

that those ties to ancestral soil,

the soft variables reflected in their aphorisms,

actually affect longevity?

The power of motherland

世界に一つしかない

so fundamental to that part of the world

故郷の力が

seems palliative.

苦しみを和らげるようです

Home and community are forces

故郷とコミュニティーの力には

that rival even radiation.

放射線ですら かないません

Now radiation or not,

さて 放射線とは関係なく

these women are at the end of their lives.

彼女達は人生を終えつつあります

In the next decade, the zone's human residents will be gone,

10年後にはゾーン内の 住民はいなくなり

and it will revert to a wild, radioactive place,

放射線に満ちた野生に戻って

full only of animals and occasionally

たくさんの動物が 時折 訪れる科学者達を

daring, flummoxed scientists.

驚かせることでしょう

But the spirit and existence of the babushkas,

知り合って３年が経ち バブーシュカ達の人数は

whose numbers have been halved

半分になりましたが

in the three years I've known them,

will leave us with powerful new templates

教えてくれるのは

to think about and grapple with,

パワフルで新しい考え方です

about the relative nature of risk,

リスクは捉え方次第で 変化すること

about transformative connections to home,

故郷とのつながりが 変化を促すこと

and about the magnificent tonic

そして 活力の源は

of personal agency and self-determination.

意志と自己決定に あるということです
