When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the Guinness Book of World Records,

बचपन मे मैं गिनेस बूक ऑफ़ वर्ल्ड रिकार्ड्स की बडी शौक़ीन थी

and I really wanted to set a world record myself.

और मैं चाहती थी की मै खुद एक वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड बनाऊँI

But there was just one small problem:

बस एक छोटी सी समस्या थी:

I had absolutely no talent.

So I decided to set a world record in something

तब मैने तय किया की मुझे उस चीज़ मे रिकॉर्ड बनानी है

that demanded absolutely no skill at all.

जिसमे कोई हुनर या कौशल की ज़रुरत ना होI

I decided to set a world record

तब मैंने निश्चय किया की मैं वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड बनाऊंगी

in crawling.

Now, the record at the time was 12 and a half miles,

रेंगने का रिकॉर्ड उस समय किसी ने साडे १२ मिलों की बनाई थी,

and for some reason, this seemed totally manageable.

और इसे पढ़के मुझे यह लगा कि इस रिकॉर्ड को मैं आसानी से तोड़ पाऊँगी I

I recruited my friend Anne,

मेरे साथ मेरी सहेली ऐनी भी जुड़ गई,

and together we decided, we didn't even need to train.

And on the day of our record attempt,

we put furniture pads on the outside of our good luck jeans

and we set off,

and right away, we were in trouble,

because the denim was against our skin

and it began to chafe,

and soon our knees were being chewed up.

Hours in,

Then, Anne dropped out.

Then, it got dark.

Now, by now, my knees were bleeding through my jeans,

and I was hallucinating from the cold

and the pain and the monotony.

And to give you an idea of the suffer-fest that I was undergoing,

the first lap around the high school track took 10 minutes.

The last lap took almost 30.

After 12 hours of crawling,

I stopped,

So I was short of the 12-and-a-half-mile record.

Now, for many years, I thought this was a story of abject failure,

but today I see it differently,

because when I was attempting the world record,

I was doing three things.

I was getting outside my comfort zone,

I was calling upon my resilience,

and I was finding confidence in myself

and my own decisions.

I didn't know it then,

but those are not the attributes of failure.

Those are the attributes of bravery.

Now, in 1989, at the age of 26,

I became a San Francisco firefighter,

and I was the 15th woman in a department of 1,500 men.

And as you can imagine, when I arrived

and sure enough, when my engine group pulled up,

there was black smoke billowing from a building off an alleyway.

And I was with a big guy named Skip,

and he was on the nozzle, and I was right behind,

and it was a typical sort of fire.

The explosion had been caused by a water heater,

And I was confused, because the fire hadn't been difficult physically,

Skip, who was by the way a really nice guy

and an excellent firefighter,

not only thought that women could not be strong,

he thought that they could not be brave either.

बल्कि पुरुषों से कम बहादुर भी हैंI

And he wasn't the only one.

और ऐसी सोच सिर्फ उनकी ही नहीं थीI

Friends, acquaintances and strangers,

दोस्त, जान पहचानवाले, अजनबी,

men and women throughout my career

आदमी या औरत, मेरे वृत्तिगत जीवन के दौरान

ask me over and over,

सबने मुझसे हर बार यही सवाल किया

"Caroline, all that fire, all that danger,

"कैरोलाइन, वह आग वह खतरा"

aren't you scared?"

"क्या तुम्हे डर नहीं लगता?"

Honestly, I never heard a male firefighter asked this.

सच में, मैंने यह सवाल कभी भी कोई पुरुष फायरमैन से पूछते हुए नहीं सुना।

And I became curious.

Why wasn't bravery expected of women?

Now, the answer began to come

when a friend of mine lamented to me

and so I began to notice,

and yes, the daughter was anxious,

but more than that, the parents were anxious.

Most of what they said to her when she was outside began with,

"Be careful," "Watch out," or "No."

Now, my friends were not bad parents.

मेरे दोस्त बुरे माँ बाप नहीं थे I

They were just doing what most parents do,

वह सिर्फ वही कर रहे थे जो अधिक माँ बाप किया करते हैं,

which is cautioning their daughters much more than they caution their sons.

अपने बेटों से ज़्यादा वह अपने बेटियों को सावधान किया करते हैं I

There was a study involving a playground fire pole, ironically,

खेल के मैदान में लगाए गए एक फायर के खम्बे पर अध्ययन किया गया|

in which researchers saw that little girls were very likely to be warned

इसमें देखा गया की खम्बे से फिसलते वक़्त लड़कियों को

by both their moms and dads about the fire pole's risk,

उनके माता पिता खम्बे के जोखिम के बारे में सावधान करते थे,

and if the little girls still wanted to play on the fire pole,

उसके बावजूद भी अगर लड़की उस खम्बे के साथ खेलना चाहे तो,

a parent was very likely to assist her.

माता या पिता उसकी सहायता के लिए दौड़ते हैI

But the little boys?

पर लड़के?

They were encouraged to play on the fire pole

खम्बे के साथ खेलने के लिए उनको बढ़ावा दिया जाता हैI

despite any trepidations that they might have,

उनमे घबराहट होने के बावजूद भी,

and often the parents offered guidance on how to use it on their own.

माता पिता खुद लड़कों को सिखाते हैं कि खम्बे के साथ खेल कैसे जाता हैंI

So what message does this send to both boys and girls?

यह करने से हम लड़कों और लड़कियों को क्या संदेसा दे रहे हैं?

Well, that girls are fragile and more in need of help,

कि लड़कियां नाज़ुक हैं और उनको हर काम में सहायता की ज़रुरत हैं,

and that boys can and should master difficult tasks by themselves.

और लड़के कोई भी मुश्किल काम आसानी से करने में माहिर हैं?

It says that girls should be fearful

लड़कियों को भयभीत होनी चाहिए?

and boys should be gutsy.

और लड़के निडर?

Now, the irony is that at this young age,

जब बच्चे छोटे होते हैं तब,

girls and boys are actually very alike physically.

लड़को और लड़कियों की ताकत एक समान होती हैI

In fact, girls are often stronger until puberty,

लड़कियां अधिकतर तारुण्यागम तक शक्तिशाली

and more mature.

और ज़्यादा समझदार होती हैI

And yet we adults act

पर हम बड़े, इसी वहम में रहते हैं कि

as if girls are more fragile

लड़कियां बहुत ही नाज़ुक हैं,

and more in need of help,

बिना मदद के वह कुछ कर नहीं सकती और

and they can't handle as much.

उनसे ज़्यादा कुछ हो नहीं पाताI

This is the message that we absorb as kids,

बचपन में इसी सोच को हमारे दिमाग में भरा जाता हैं,

and this is the message that fully permeates as we grow up.

और बड़े होने के बाद भी इसी सोच को सच मानने लगते हैं I

We women believe it, men believe it,

पुरुष एवं महिला, दोनों इस खयालात को सच मानते हैं,

and guess what?

और तो और

As we become parents, we pass it on to our children,

हम अपने बच्चों को और वह उनके बच्चों को यही सिखाते हैं,

and so it goes.

और यह चलता रहता हैI

Well, so now I had my answer.

तो लीजिये मुझे मेरा जवाब मिल गया

This is why women, even firewomen,

औरतों से खासकर फायर फाइटर औरतों से भी

were expected to be scared.

यही अपेक्षा रहती हैं कि वह भयभीत रहे I

This is why women often are scared.

सिर्फ इसीलिए कई महिलाये भयभीत रहती हैं

Now, I know some of you won't believe me when I tell you this,

कुछ लोग मेरी बात मानने के लिए तैयार नहीं होंगे अगर मैं यह कहूँ कि

but I am not against fear.

मैं डरने के खिलाफ नहीं हूँI

I know it's an important emotion, and it's there to keep us safe.

क्योंकि डर एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भावना हैं जो हमें सुरक्षित रखती हैं,

But the problem is when fear is the primary reaction

पर इस भावना को इतना भी आवश्यक ना बनाये जिससे

that we teach and encourage in girls

लड़किया कोई भी नया काम करते वक़्त

whenever they face something outside their comfort zone.

अपने कदम झिझक झिझककर रखे I

So I was a paraglider pilot for many years --

कई साल मैं एक पैराग्लाइडर पायलट भी रह चुकी हूँ

(Applause)

(तालियाँ)

and a paraglider is a parachute-like wing,

एक पैराग्लाइडर पंख वाले हवाई छत्री की तरह होती हैं

and it does fly very well,

और उड़ती भी बहुत खूब हैं

but to many people I realize it looks just like a bedsheet

पर लोगों के लिए एक पैराग्लाइडर पायलट तार लगे हुए

with strings attached.

चादर की तरह नज़र आते हैं|

(Laughter)

(लोगों की हंसी)

And I spent a lot of time on mountaintops

और पहाड़ों के ऊपर इस चादर में हवा भरते

inflating this bedsheet,

मैंने बहुत समय बिताएI

running off and flying.

पहाड़ के ऊपर से भाग कर हवा में उड़ना

And I know what you're thinking.

और आप यही सोच रहे हैं कि

You're like, Caroline, a little fear would make sense here.

'कैरोलाइन, इस मामले में थोड़ा तो डरना ज़रूरी हैं'

And you're right, it does.

और आप सही हैंI

I assure you, I did feel fear.

सच मानिए मैं भी डरी,

But on that mountaintop,

पर उस पर्वत के ऊपर,

waiting for the wind to come in just right,

हवा का इंतज़ार करते वक़्त

I felt so many other things, too:

मुझमे कई उमंग उमड़ आते थे:

exhilaration, confidence.

ज़िंदादिली, विश्वासI

I knew I was a good pilot.

मैं एक अच्छी पायलट हूँ यह मुझे पता था

I knew the conditions were good, or I wouldn't be there.

और यह भी पता था की परिस्तिथि अच्छे न होते तो मैं वहा नहीं होती I

I knew how great it was going to be a thousand feet in the air.

ज़मीन से हज़ारों फ़ीट ऊपर हवा में उड़ने का मज़ा कुछ और ही था

So yes, fear was there,

और हाँ डर भी था

but I would take a good hard look at it,

पर उस डर को मैं एक बार ग़ौर से परिशीलन करती,

assess just how relevant it was

उसके महत्वपूर्णता को निर्धारित करती

and then put it where it belonged,

और उसे ऐसी जगह पंहुचा देती,

which was more often than not

जो ठीक मेरे

behind my exhilaration, my anticipation

ज़िंदादिली, अपेक्षा और विश्वास

and my confidence.

के पीछे होती थी, एक कदम भी आगे नहीं

So I'm not against fear.

मैं डर के खिलाफ नहीं हूँ

I'm just pro-bravery.

मैं सिर्फ बहादुरी के राह पर चलना चाहती हूँ

Now, I'm not saying your girls must be firefighters

मैं यह नहीं कह रही हूँ कि हर लड़की को फायर फाइटर

or that they should be paragliders,

या पैराग्लाइडर बनना चाहिए I

but I am saying that we are raising our girls to be timid, even helpless,

मैं यह कह रही हूँ की हम अपनी लड़कियों को बुज़दिल और मजबूर बना रहे हैं

and it begins when we caution them against physical risk.

उन्हें कठिन शारीरिक कार्यों के लिए बढ़ावा नहीं दे रहे हैं I

The fear we learn and the experiences we don't

यही डर और मजबूरी हमारे साथ बढ़ने लगती हैं

stay with us as we become women

और हमेशा के लिए हमारे साथ रह जाती हैं

and morphs into all those things that we face and try to shed:

इन सब का प्रभाव हमारे हर कदम पर पड़ने लगती हैं:

our hesitation in speaking out,

जी खोलकर बोलने में हमारी झिझक,

our deference so that we can be liked

हमारे अपनेपन को छुपा के रखना ताकि लोग हमें पसंद करे,

and our lack of confidence in our own decisions.

और खुद के निर्णय लेने में संकोचI

So how do we become brave?

तो फिर हम महिलाये बहादुर कैसे बने?

Well, here's the good news.

बात यह हैं कि,

Bravery is learned,

बहादुरी सीखी जा सकती हैं,

and like anything learned,

और सीखने के साथ साथ हमें

it just needs to be practiced.

बहादुरी को एक प्रथा बनानी चाहिएI

So first,

तो पहले,

we have to take a deep breath

हम सबको एक गहरी सांस लेनी चाहिए

and encourage our girls

और हमारी लड़कियों को बढ़ावा देना चाहिए

to skateboard, climb trees

स्केटिंग करने के लिए, पेड़ पर चढ़ने के लिए

and clamber around on that playground fire pole.

या खेल के मैदान में बेझिझक खेलने के लिए

This is what my own mother did.

मेरी माँ ने भी मेरे साथ वही किया था

She didn't know it then,

उनको तब यह बात मालूम नहीं था

but researchers have a name for this.

पर शोधकर्ताओं के अनुसार

They call it risky play,

यह जोखिम भरी परिस्तिथि कहलाता हैं

and studies show that risky play is really important for kids, all kids,

और अध्ययन यह दिखता हैं की अगर बच्चों के खेल में कुछ हद तक कठोरता हो

because it teaches hazard assessment,

तो वह खुद खतरों का अंदाजा लगाना सीख लेते हैं

it teaches delayed gratification,

प्रतिफल का इंतज़ार करना सीखते हैं,

it teaches resilience,

लौटाव सिखाती हैं

it teaches confidence.

आत्मविश्वास से कदम रखना सीखते हैं I

In other words,

दूसरी तरह से कहा जाए तो,

when kids get outside and practice bravery,

जब बच्चे निडर होकर बाहर जाने लगते हैं,

they learn valuable life lessons.

तब ज़िन्दगी के कुछ अनमोल सीख उन्हें मिलती हैंI

Second, we have to stop cautioning our girls willy-nilly.

साथ साथ हमें अपनी लड़कियों में खौफ भरना नहीं चाहिएI

So notice next time you say,

अगली बार अपनी बच्ची से यह मत कहियेगा कि,

"Watch out, you're going to get hurt,"

"संभलके, गिर मत जाना, चोट लग गई तो?"

or, "Don't do that, it's dangerous."

"यह मत करना, इसमें खतरा हैं"

And remember that often what you're really telling her

और कभी भी अपनी बेटियों से यह मत कहियेगा कि

is that she shouldn't be pushing herself,

उसे ज़्यादा परिश्रम करना नहीं चाहिए,

that she's really not good enough,

वह इतनी भी समझदार नहीं हैं,

that she should be afraid.

और उसे डर डर के जीना चाहिए I

Third,

और तो और

we women have to start practicing bravery, too.

हम महिलाओं को खुद बहादुरी की सीख लेनी चाहिए I

We cannot teach our girls until we teach ourselves.

अगर हम नहीं सीखेंगे तो हमारी बेटियों को कैसे सिखाएंगे?

So here's another thing:

तो यह रही एक और बात

fear and exhilaration

डर और ज़िंदादिली

feel very similar --

दोनों का एहसास एक जैसा हो सकता हैं

the shaky hands, the heightened heart rate,

वह कांपते हाथ, दिल की तेज़ धड़कन

the nervous tension,

वह बेचैनी,

and I'm betting that for many of you

पर इतना ज़रूर कहूँगी कि,

the last time you thought you were scared out of your wits,

पिछली बार वह शायद ज़िंदादिली थी

you may have been feeling mostly exhilaration,

जिसको आप डर समझ बैठे थे,

and now you've missed an opportunity.

और उसी वजह से आपने एक मौका खो दिया I

So practice.

इसीलिए कोशिश जारी रखे I

And while girls should be getting outside to learn to be gutsy,

लड़कियों को हर कदम निडर होकर रखना चाहिए

I get that adults don't want to get on hoverboards or climb trees,

आज कल हम बड़े भी खेल कूद में या पेड़ चढ़ने में दिलचस्पी नहीं रखते,

so we all should be practicing

संकोच छोड़िये और लग जाइये वह करने में जो आपका मन करे

at home, in the office

घर हो या दफ्तर

and even right here getting up the guts

या यही पे अगर आपको कोई पसंद आये

to talk to someone that you really admire.

तो शर्माइये मत, उठिये और जाके उससे कहिये

Finally, when your girl is, let's say,

अगर आपकी बेटी को आप साइकिल चलाना सीखा रहे हैं,

on her bike on the top of the steep hill

और चोटी के ऊपर से नीचे आते वक़्त

that she insists she's too scared to go down,

उसके ज़ेहन में डर भर गया हो तो

guide her to access her bravery.

उसका हौसला बढ़ाइएI

Ultimately, maybe that hill really is too steep,

क्योंकि उस चोटी के ऊपर से वह साइकिल चला पायेगी या नहीं,

but she'll come to that conclusion through courage, not fear.

इसका हिसाब वह खुद अपने दिलेरी से लगा लेगी

Because this is not about the steep hill in front of her.

क्योंकि बात उस चोटी की नहीं हैं I

This is about the life ahead of her

बात उसकी ज़िन्दगी की हैं

and that she has the tools

और उसके पास वह ताकत हैं जिससे

to handle and assess

ज़िन्दगी में आने वाले हर मुश्किल और चुनौती का

all the dangers that we cannot protect her from,

सामना कर सकती हैं,

all the challenges that we won't be there to guide her through,

बिना हमारी मदद के

everything that our girls here

और यह बात सिर्फ यहाँ की लड़कियों के लिए ही नहीं

and around the world

बल्कि दुनिया भर की लड़कियों के

face in their future.

भविष्य के लिए हैंI

So by the way,

वैसे,

the world record for crawling today --

रेंगने का वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड आज

(Laughter)

(हंसी)

is 35.18 miles,

३५.१८ मिलों की हैं,

and I would really love to see a girl go break that.

मैं यही चाहती हूँ कि कोई लड़की इसे तोड़ेI
