Jackie Tabick: The balancing act of compassion

One of my favorite cartoon characters is Snoopy.

یکی از کاراکتُرهاي کارتوني موردِ علاقة من، اِسنوپی (Snoopy) است.

I love the way he sits and lies on his kennel and contemplates the great things of life.

از اینکه روي ناودانش خونسردانه دراز میکشد و در مورد چیزهاي عمیقِ زندگی میاندیشد خیلی لذت میبرم.

So when I thought about compassion,

بهمین دلیل، هنگامیکه به شفقت و دلسوزی فکر کردم،

my mind immediately went to one of the cartoon strips,

بلافاصله یادِ یکی از این کارتونها افتادم

where he's lying there and he says,

که در آن، اِسنوپی دراز کشیده و میگوید:

"I really understand, and I really appreciate

"من واقعاً میفهمم و قدر اینرا میدانم که

how one should love one's neighbor as one love's oneself.

یک شخص میبایست همسایه ی خود را مانندِ خود دوست بدارد.

The only trouble is the people next door; I can't stand them."

تنها مشکلِ من اینست که، تحملِ همسایه هایم را ندارم."

This, in a way, is one of the challenges

این، به عنوانی، یکی از چالشاتِ

of how to interpret a really good idea.

تفسیر کردنِ یک ایده ی خوب است.

We all, I think, believe in compassion.

من فکر میکنم که، ما همگی، به شفقت اعتقاد داریم.

If you look at all the world religions, all the main world religions,

اگر به تمامي مذاهبِ اصلي جهان نگاه کنید،

you'll find within them some teaching concerning compassion.

تعالیمی مربوط به شفقت را پیدا خواهید کرد.

So in Judaism, we have, from our Torah,

ما در یهودیت، درکتابِ مقدسِ تورات، این امر را داریم:

that you should love your neighbor as you love yourself.

که ما میبایست، همسایه های خود را مانندِ خودمان دوست داشته باشیم.

And within Jewish teachings, the rabbinic teachings, we have Hillel,

و در شریعتِ یهودی و قوانینِ خاخام ها (هلاخا)، ما هیلِل را داریم

who taught that you shouldn't do to others what you don't like being done to yourself.

که بما آموخت: "رفتاری را كه نسبت به خودت نمی پسندی، براي همنوعت نيز انجام نده."

And all the main religions have similar teachings.

و تمامِ مذاهبِ اصلی جهان، تعالیمی مشابه با آن را دارند.

And again, within Judaism,

دگرباره، در یهودیت،

we have a teaching about God,

ما یک تعلیمی راجع به خداوند داریم که

who is called the compassionate one, Ha-rachaman.

در آن، خداوند بنامِ مشفق (ها رَخمان) خوانده میشود.

After all, how could the world exist without God being compassionate?

بالاتر از همه، بدونِ شفقتِ خدواند، چطوری جهان میتواند وجود داشته باشد؟

And we, as taught within the Torah that we are made in the image of God,

در تورات گفته شده است که، خداوند انسان را بشکلِ‌ خود آفریده است،

so we too have to be compassionate.

بنابراین، ما نیز میبایست مشفق باشیم.

But what does it mean? How does it impact on our everyday life?

ولی معني آن چیست؟ چه تأثیری در زندگي روزمره ی ما میتواند داشته باشد؟

Sometimes, of course, being compassionate

البته، بعضی اوقات، مشفق بودن، میتواند

can produce feelings within us that are very difficult to control.

احساساتِ بسیار مشکل و کنترل نشدني را در ما بوجود بیاورد.

I know there are many times when I've gone and conducted a funeral,

براي مثال، بارها بوده که من مراسمِ تشییع جنازه ای را اداره کردم،

or when I have been sitting with the bereaved, or with people who are dying,

یا با افرادِ عزادار و افرادی که در حال مرگند، نشسته ام،

and I am overwhelmed by the sadness, by the difficulty,

و مستغرقِ اندوه، گرفتگی،

the challenge that is there for the family, for the person.

و مشکلاتِ آن خانواده یا آن شخص بوده ام.

And I'm touched, so that tears come to my eyes.

من چنان تحت تأثیر قرار میگیرم که چشمانم پُر از اشک میشوند.

And yet, if I just allowed myself to be overwhelmed by these feelings,

لیکن، اگر بخودم این اجازه را بدهم که توسط این احساسات غلبه شوم،

I wouldn't be doing my job --

کار خود را بدرستی انجام نخواهم داد،

because I have to actually be there for them

چون، وظیفه ی من این است که به آن اشخاص رسیدگي کنم،

and make sure that rituals happen, that practicalities are seen to.

و مطمئن باشم که مراسم مذهبی بخوبی و با در نظر داشتن تمامِ نکات انجام گیرد.

And yet, on the other hand, if I didn't feel this compassion,

و در عین حال، از طرفِ دیگر، اگر من نتوانم این شفقت را حس کنم،

then I feel that it would be time for me to hang up my robe

آن موقع، وقت این خواهد بود که رداء خود را درآورم،

and give up being a rabbi.

و مسئولیتِ خاخامیم را ترک کنم.

And these same feelings are there for all of us as we face the world.

و همین احساسات، براي همه ی ما وجود دارند، در زمانیکه با دنیا برخورد میکنیم.

Who cannot be touched by compassion

چطوری میشه تحتِ تأثیرِ شفقت قرار نگرفت،

when we see the terrible horrors of the results of war,

در زمانیکه، نتایجِ وحشت آمیزِ جنگ،

or famine, or earthquakes, or tsunamis?

قحطی، زلزله و یا سونامی را مشاهده میکنیم؟

I know some people who say

میدانم که بعضی از اشخاص میگویند:

"Well, you know there's just so much out there -- I can't do anything,

"خوب، میدونی که چقدر بدبختی وجود دارد، از من که کاری بر درنمیاد.

I'm not going to even begin to try."

حتی نمیدانم از کجا شروع کنم."

And there are some charity workers who call this compassion fatigue.

بعضی از کارمندانِ موسسات خیریه، این وضعیت را، "شفقت فرسودگی" نامیده اند.

There are others who feel they can't confront compassion anymore,

بعضیها هستند که حس میکنند دیگر قادر به برخورد کردن با شفقت را ندارند،

and so they turn off the television and don't watch.

تِلِویزیونهایشان را خاموش میکنند و نگاه نمیکنند.

In Judaism, though, we tend to always say, there has to be a middle way.

در یهودیت، ما متمایلاً میگوییم، همیشه یک راهِ میانه ی وجود دارد.

You have to, of course, be aware of the needs of others,

البته، باید از نیازهاي دیگران آگاه باشید،

but you have to be aware in such a way that you can carry on with your life

ولی به گونه ای آگاه باشید که بتوانید به زندگی خود ادامه داده،

and be of help to people.

و همزمان کمک به دیگران باشید.

So part of compassion has to be an understanding of what makes people tick.

پس، بخشی از شفقت، میبایست فهمیدنِ این باشد که، چه چیزی مردم را تحریک میکند.

And, of course, you can't do that unless you understand yourself a bit more.

البته، شما قادر به اینکار نخواهید بود مگر آنکه خودتان را کمی بیشتر بشناسید.

And there's a lovely rabbinic interpretation of the beginnings of creation,

یک تفسیرِ خاخامانة زیبایی در مورد ابتداي خلقت وجود دارد،

which says that when God created the world,

که میگوید، زمانیکه خداوند جهان را آفرید،

God thought that it would be best to create the world

او گمان برد که بهتر است دنیا را،

only with the divine attribute of justice.

صرفاً، با صفاتِ الهي عدالت بیآفریند.

Because, after all, God is just.

چون، خدا عادل است.

Therefore, there should be justice throughout the world.

بنابراین، در سراسر جهان، عدالت باید وجود داشته باشد.

And then God looked to the future and realized,

بعد، خدا بسوی آینده نگاه کرد و دید که،

if the world was created just with justice, the world couldn't exist.

آگر جهان تنها با عدالت خلق شده بود، دیگر قادر به زیستن نمیبود.

So, God thought, "Nope, I'm going to create the world just with compassion."

پس خدا اندیشید که: "خیر، من جهان را صرفاً با شفقت خواهم آفرید."

And then God looked to the future and realized that,

بعد، خدا بسوی آینده نگاه کرد و دید که،

in fact, if the world were just filled with compassion,

در اصل، اگر جهان تنها پُر از شفقت باشد،

there would be anarchy and chaos.

بی نظمی و هرج و مرج وجود خواهد داشت.

There had to be limits to all things.

هر چیزی باید محدودیتی داشته باشد.

The rabbis describe this as being like a king

خاخامان، این را به عنوانِ یک شاهی توصیف میکنند

who has a beautiful, fragile glass bowl.

که داراي یک کاسة شیشه اي زیبا و لطیف است.

If you put too much cold water in, it will shatter.

اگر آن کاسه را پُر از آبِ سَرد کنید، خواهد شکست.

If you put boiling water in, it will shatter.

اگر پُر از آبِ جوشیده کنید، خواهد شکست.

What do you have to do? Put in a mixture of the two.

چه باید بکنید؟ باید آن را با آبِ مخلوط پُر کنید.

And so God put both of these possibilities into the world.

بنابراین، خداوند هر دوي این امکانات را در جهان قرار داده است.

There is something more though that has to be there.

ولی، یک کارِ دیگریست که باید انجام بگیرد.

And that is the translation of the feelings

و آن، انقالِ احساساتِ

that we may have about compassion

ما راجع به شفقت،

into the wider world, into action.

به جهانِ گُسترده تر و به مرحله ی عملکرد.

So, like Snoopy, we can't just lie there

میدانید که ما نمیتوانیم مثلِ اِسنوپی دراز بکشیم

and think great thoughts about our neighbors.

و راجع به همسایگانِ خود افکار عالی داشته باشیم.

We actually have to do something about it.

در واقع، ما باید در موردش عملی انجام دهیم.

And so there is also, within Judaism, this notion of love and kindness

در یهودیت، یک نظریه ی عشق و محبت (چِسِد) وجود دارد

that becomes very important: "chesed."

که بسیار مهم بنظر میاید.

All these three things, then, have to be melded together.

سپس، هر سه ی این موارد باید با هم بپیوندند.

The idea of justice, which gives boundaries to our lives

ایده ی عدالت، که به زندگیمان شکل و حدود میدهد

and gives us a feeling of what's right about life, what's right about living,

و بما قدرتِ فهمِ انیرا میدهد که بدانیم چه چیزی درباره ی خودِ زندگی درست است وچه چیزی درباره ی زندگی کردن درست است،

what should we be doing, social justice.

و چه کاری را باید انجام دهیم، عدالتِ اجتماعی.

There has to be a willingness to do good deeds,

الزاماً، تمایل به انجام دادنِ اعمالِ صالح باید وجود داشته باشد،

but not, of course, at the expense of our own sanity.

البته، نه به قیمتِ سلامتي عقلي خود.

You know, there's no way that you can do anything for anyone

میدانید که، بهیچ وجه شما نمیتوانید براي کسی کاری انجام دهید،

if you overdo things.

اگر در کارتان بحدِ افراط عمل کنید.

And balancing them all in the middle is this notion of compassion,

و نظریه ی شفقت، تعادلِ همه ی آنها در میانه است.

which has to be there, if you like, at our very roots.

که الزاماً در ریشه ی ما باید باشد.

This idea of compassion comes to us

این ایده ی شفقتِ، بدلیلِ این به نظر ما میاید

because we're made in the image of God,

چون خداوند ما را بشکلِ خود آفرید.

who is ultimately the compassionate one.

که در نهایت، او، آن شفیقِ یکتاست.

What does this compassion entail?

این شفقت مستلزمِ چه چیزیست؟

It entails understanding the pain of the other.

آن، مستلزمِ فهمیدنِ رنجهاي دیگران است،

But even more than that,

ولی حتی بیشتر از آن،

it means understanding one's connection to the whole of creation:

یعنی فهمِ ارتباطِ خود با کُلِ خلقت،

understanding that one is part of that creation,

که ما عُضوی از آن خلقت هستیم،

that there is a unity that underlies all that we see,

که یک وحدتی وجود دارد که زمینه ی تمامِ چیزهاییست که ما مشاهده میکنیم،

all that we hear, all that we feel.

میشنویم و حس میکنیم.

I call that unity God.

من آن وحدت را خدا نامیده ام.

And that unity is something that connects all of creation.

و آن وحدت، چیزیست که تمامي خلقت را بهم متصل میکند.

And, of course, in the modern world, with the environmental movement,

و البته، در دنیاي مُدِرن، با جنبشِ محیط زیست،

we're becoming even more aware of the connectivity of things,

ما داریم آگاهي بیشتری از این اتصال حاصل میکنیم

that something I do here actually does matter in Africa,

یعنی کاری را که من در اینجا انجام میدهم، در واقع، در آفریقا اثر خواهد داشت،

that if I use too much of my carbon allowance,

یعنی اگر من در استفاده از هزینه ی کَربُنیم سوء استفاده کنم،

it seems to be that we are causing

بنظر میاید که باعثِ

a great lack of rain in central and eastern Africa.

فقدانِ عظیمِ باران در آفریقاي شرقی و مرکزی خواهم بود.

So there is a connectivity,

پس، یک رابطه ای وجود دارد.

and I have to understand that -- as part of the creation,

و من باید آنرا به عنوانِ عُضوی از این خلقت بدانم،

as part of me being made in the image of God.

به عنوانِ عُضوی از من که بشکل خداوند خلق شده است.

And I have to understand that my needs

و من باید بفهمم که نیازهای من،

sometimes have to be sublimated to other needs.

باید بعضی اوقات، متعال به نیازهای دیگر باشند.

This "18 minutes" business, I find quite fascinating.

این تجارتِ هجده دقیقه ای بسیارجذاب است.

Because in Judaism, the number 18, in Hebrew letters,

چون در یهودیت، کلمه و شماره ی ۱۸ در حروفِ عبری،

stands for life -- the word "life."

بمعناي زندگی است، لغتِ زندگی.

So, in a sense, the 18 minutes is challenging me to say,

پس، بعنوانی، این هجده دقیقه دارد مرا وادار میکند که بگویم

"In life, this is what's important in terms of compassion."

در زندگی ، این همان چیزی است که از نظر شفقت مهم است ،

But, something else as well:

ولی همچنین، چیز دیگری.

actually, 18 minutes is important.

در اصل، ۱۸ دقیقه مهم است.

Because at Passover, when we have to eat unleavened bread,

چون، در عید فطیر، که ما باید نانِ ورنیامده بخوریم،

the rabbis say, what is the difference between dough that is made into bread,

خاخامها میپرسند که تفاوتِ بینِ خمیرِ نانِ معمولی

and dough that is made into unleavened bread, or "matzah"?

و خمیرِ نانِ ورنیامده (matzah) چسیت؟

And they say "It's 18 minutes."

و میگویند جوابش ۱۸ دقیقه است.

Because that's how long they say it takes for this dough to become leaven.

چون میگویند این قدر طول میکشد که خمیر ورآمده شود.

What does it mean, "dough becomes leaven"?

خمیر ورآمده شدن چه معني دارد؟

It means it gets filled with hot air.

یعنی آن پُر از هواي داغ میشود.

What's matzah? What's unleavened bread? You don't get it.

نانِ فطیر چیست؟ نانِ ورنیامده چیست؟ شما نمیدانید.

Symbolically, what the rabbis say is that at Passover,

بطورِ نمادی، خاخامها میگویند که در زمانِ عید فطیر،

what we have to do is try to get rid of our hot air -- our pride,

ما باید سعی کنیم که از این بادِ هواي داغِ خویش (غرورمان) رها شویم،

our feeling that we are the most important people in the whole entire world,

رهایی از این احساسی که ما فکر میکنیم مهمترین اشخاصِ کُلِ جهانیم،

and that everything should revolve round us.

و رهایی از اینکه حس میکنیم همه چیز باید دور ما بگردد.

So we try and get rid of those,

پس ما سعی میکنیم که از آنها رها شویم،

and so doing, try to get rid of the habits, the emotions, the ideas

و درحینِ‌ رهایی، سعی میکنیم که از عاداتمان رها شویم، احساساتی، عقایدی که

that enslave us, that make our eyes closed, give us tunnel vision

ما را برده ی خود کرده اند، چشمانمان را پوشیده اند، و بما دیدگاهِ تونلی داده اند

so we don't see the needs of others --

تا نتوانیم نیازهای دیگران را ببینیم،

and free ourselves and free ourselves from that.

و خود را از آنها آزاد کنیم.

And that too is a basis for having compassion,

و آن نیز خود پایه ایست برای داشتن شفقت،

for understanding our place in the world.

برای فهمیدنِ وضعیتمان در این جهان.

Now there is, in Judaism, a gorgeous story

حال، در یهودیت، یک داستانِ عالي وجود دارد

of a rich man who sat in synagogue one day.

در مورد یک مردِ ثروتمند که روزی درکنیسه نشسته بود.

And, as many people do, he was dozing off during the sermon.

و مانند خیلی ها، درحینِ موعظه چرتش گرفته بود.

And as he was dozing off, they were reading from the book of Leviticus in the Torah.

همینکه چرت میزد، داشتن از کتابِ "وییقرا" در تورات میخواندند.

And they were saying that in the ancient times in the temple in Jerusalem,

و میخواندند که در زمانِ باستانی، در پرستشگاههاي بيت المقدس،

the priests used to have bread,

کشیشها نانی داشتند،

which they used to place into a special table in the temple in Jerusalem.

که در یک میزِ ویژه ای در پرستشگاهِ بیت المقدس قرار میدادند.

The man was asleep, but he heard the words bread, temple, God, and he woke up.

این مرد خوابیده بود، ولی همینکه کلماتِ نان، پرستشگاه و خدا را شنید، بیدار شد.

He said, "God wants bread. That's it. God wants bread. I know what God wants."

گفت: "خدا نان میخواهد. آری. خدا نان میخواهد. من میدانم خدا چه میخواهد."

And he rushed home. And after the Sabbath, he made 12 loaves of bread,

و با عجله رفت به خانه اش. بعد از روز تعطیل، دوازده تا نان پُخت،

took them to the synagogue, went into the synagogue,

آنها را به کنیسه برد، وارد کنیسه شد،

opened the ark and said, "God, I don't know why you want this bread, but here you are."

صندوقچه را باز کرد و گفت: "خدایا، من نمیدانم چرا این نان را میخواهی، ولی بیا، برای تست."

And he put it in the ark with the scrolls of the Torah.

و نانها را در این صندوقچه، جفتِ کتیبه هاي تورات قرار داد.

Then he went home.

و برگشت به خانه اش.

The cleaner came into the synagogue.

خادمِ کنیسه وارد شد.

"Oh God, I'm in such trouble. I've got children to feed.

"ای خدا، بد جوری گرفتارم. فرزندانم گرسنه اند.

My wife's ill. I've got no money. What can I do?"

زنم مریض است. پولی ندارم. چکار باید بکنم؟"

He goes into the synagogue. "God, will you please help me?

واردِ کنیسه میشود. "خدایا مرا کمک میکنی؟

Ah, what a wonderful smell."

بَه، چه بوي عالي."

He goes to the ark. He opens the ark.

بسوي صندوقچه میرود. بازش میکند.

"There's bread! God, you've answered my plea. You've answered my question."

"نان! خدایا، دعاي مرا مستجاب کردی. سؤالم را جواب داده ای."

Takes the bread and goes home.

نانها را ورمیدارد و میرود خانه.

Meanwhile, the rich man thinks to himself,

ضمناً، آن مردِ ثروتمند با خودش میاندیشد،

"I'm an idiot. God wants bread?

"من چه احمقم. خدا نان میخواهد؟

God, the one who rules the entire universe, wants my bread?"

خدا، که تمامي کهکشانهارا فرمانروایی میکند، حال نان میخواهد؟"

He rushes to the synagogue. "I'll get it out of the ark before anybody finds it."

با عجله به کنیسه برمیگردد. "من نانها را قبل از اینکه کسی متوجه شود، از صندوقچه بر خواهم داشت."

He goes in there, and it's not there.

صندوقچه را باز میکند و میبیند که نانها آنجا نیستند.

And he says, "God, you really did want it. You wanted my bread.

میگوید: "خدایا، تو واقعاً نان میخواستی. تو نانِ مرا میخواستی.

Next week, with raisins."

هفته ی آینده با کشمش."

This went on for years.

این موضوع برای سالها ادامه یافت.

Every week, the man would bring bread with raisins,

هر هفته، آن مرد، نانِ کشمشی میاورد،

with all sorts of good things, put it into the ark.

با چیزهاي مختلف دیگر، و آنها را در صندوقچه میگذاشت.

Every week, the cleaner would come. "God you've answered my plea again."

هر هفته، خادم میامد. "خدایا، دعاي مرا دوباره مستجاب کرده ای."

Take the bread. Take it home.

نانها را میگرفت و میبرد به خانه اش.

Went on until a new rabbi came. Rabbis always spoil things.

این موضوع ادامه یافت تا یک خاخامِ جدید آمد. خاخامها همیشه همه چیز را ضایع میکنند.

The rabbi came in and saw what was going on.

خاخام آمد واز این موضوع آگاه شد.

And he called the two of them to his office.

هر دو را به دفترش صدا کرد.

And he said, you know, "This is what's happening."

و گفت: "این است داستانِ شما."

And the rich man -- oh, dear -- crestfallen.

مرد ثروتمند سرافکنده شد.

"You mean God didn't want my bread?"

"یعنی خدا نان مرا نخواست؟"

And the poor man said, "And you mean God didn't answer my pleas?"

و مرد فقیر گفت: "و خدا دعاهاي مرا مستجاب نکرد؟"

And the rabbi said, "You've misunderstood me.

خاخام گفت: "شما مرا درست نفهمیدید."

You've misunderstood totally," he said.

"شما کاملاً باعثِ سوء تفاهم شده اید."

"Of course, what you are doing," he said to the rich man,

به مرد ثروتمند گفت: "البته کاری که تو انجام میدهی

"is answering God's plea that we should be compassionate.

مستجاب کردنِ دعاهاي خداوند است که میخواهد ما مشفق شویم."

And God," he said to the poor man, "is answering your plea

و به مرد فقیر گفت: "و خداوند جوابِ تقاضاي ترا میدهد

that people should be compassionate and give."

که مردم باید مشفق باشند و کمک کنند."

He looked at the rich man. He held the rich man's hands and said,

به مرد ثروتمند نگاه کرد. دستانِ او را گرفت و گفت:

"Don't you understand?" He said, "These are the hands of God."

"آیا تو نمیفهمی؟ اینها دستانِ خدا هستند."

So that is the way I feel:

و این عقیده ی من است،

that I can only try to approach this notion of being compassionate,

که من میتوانم صرفاً سعی کنم که به این نظریه ي شفقت نزدیک شوم،

of understanding that there is a connectivity, that there is a unity in this world;

بفهمم که ارتباطی وجود دارد، که وحدتی و یگانگي در جهان وجود دارد،

that I want to try and serve that unity,

و من میخواهم که سعی کنم خدمتگذارِ آن وحدت باشم،

and that I can try and do that by understanding, I hope,

و این را با فهمیدنِ، امیدوارم،

trying to understand something of the pain of others;

با فهمیدنِ رنجهاي دیگران بیاموزم.

but understanding that there are limits, that people have to bear responsibility

ولی با دانستنِ این که محدودیتهایی نیز وجود دارند، و مردم باید مسئولِ

for some of the problems that come upon them;

بعضی از مشکلاتی که به سرشان میایند، باشند،

and that I have to understand that there are limits to my energy,

و من باید اینرا درک کنم که انرژي من

to the giving I can give.

و خواست کمک کردنِ من به دیگران نیز محدود است.

I have to reevaluate them,

من باید آنها را مورد ارزیابی قرار دهم،

try and separate out the material things

و سعی کنم که چیزهاي مادی و احساساتِ

and my emotions that may be enslaving me,

شخصی خود را که، باعث اسارتِ من شده اند، سوا کنم،

so that I can see the world clearly.

تا بتوانم دنیا را واضحاً ببینم.

And then I have to try to see in what ways

و سعی کنم تا ببینم به چه صورتی

I can make these the hands of God.

من میتوانم این دستان را دستانِ خدا کنم.

And so try to bring compassion to life in this world.

و به شفقت جانی نو بدهم در این زندگی.
