One of my favorite cartoon characters is Snoopy.

漫画のキャラクター、スヌーピーが好きです

I love the way he sits and lies on his kennel and contemplates the great things of life.

犬小屋の上で座ったり横になったりして人生について考えるあのスタイルが好きです

So when I thought about compassion,

憐れみということについて考えたとき

my mind immediately went to one of the cartoon strips,

すぐに漫画のひとコマを思い出しました

where he's lying there and he says,

犬小屋に横になったスヌーピーが言います

"I really understand, and I really appreciate

「『己れを愛するがごとく、汝の隣人を愛せよ』っていうけれど」

how one should love one's neighbor as one love's oneself.

「それは理解できるし、大切なことだと思う」

The only trouble is the people next door; I can't stand them."

「問題は・・・隣に住んでるあの人たち。どうしても我慢できないんだ」

This, in a way, is one of the challenges

このように素晴らしいアイディアを

of how to interpret a really good idea.

実践するのは簡単ではありません

We all, I think, believe in compassion.

誰もが憐れみは大切だと信じて疑わないでしょう

If you look at all the world religions, all the main world religions,

世界のあらゆる宗教、主要な宗教について考えてみると

you'll find within them some teaching concerning compassion.

どの宗教にも憐れみに関する教えがあることに気づきます

So in Judaism, we have, from our Torah,

もちろんユダヤ教にもあります。モーセ五書には

that you should love your neighbor as you love yourself.

自分を愛するように隣人を愛せ、という教えがあります

And within Jewish teachings, the rabbinic teachings, we have Hillel,

またユダヤ教のラビの教えにはヒレルの次のような教訓があります

who taught that you shouldn't do to others what you don't like being done to yourself.

「己の欲せざる所、人に施すこと勿れ」

And all the main religions have similar teachings.

主要な宗教にはどれも似たような教えがあります

And again, within Judaism,

また、ユダヤ教には

we have a teaching about God,

神に関する教えがあります

who is called the compassionate one, Ha-rachaman.

「ハラハマン」、憐れみ深い者と呼ばれる神です

After all, how could the world exist without God being compassionate?

神に憐れみがなかったら世界は存在できないでしょう

And we, as taught within the Torah that we are made in the image of God,

モーセ五書にあるように、私たちは神の姿に似せて創造されたのですから

so we too have to be compassionate.

私たちも憐れみ深いはずです

But what does it mean? How does it impact on our everyday life?

Sometimes, of course, being compassionate

憐れみ深いと、もちろん、それが原因で

can produce feelings within us that are very difficult to control.

I know there are many times when I've gone and conducted a funeral,

or when I have been sitting with the bereaved, or with people who are dying,

and I am overwhelmed by the sadness, by the difficulty,

And yet, if I just allowed myself to be overwhelmed by these feelings,

because I have to actually be there for them

and make sure that rituals happen, that practicalities are seen to.

And yet, on the other hand, if I didn't feel this compassion,

then I feel that it would be time for me to hang up my robe

and give up being a rabbi.

And these same feelings are there for all of us as we face the world.

Who cannot be touched by compassion

when we see the terrible horrors of the results of war,

or famine, or earthquakes, or tsunamis?

I know some people who say

こんな風に言う人もいます

"Well, you know there's just so much out there -- I can't do anything,

「世の中では色々なことが起こっていて、どうすることもできない」

I'm not going to even begin to try."

「やってみようとも思わない」と

And there are some charity workers who call this compassion fatigue.

慈善事業に関わる人の中にはこれを「同情疲労」と呼ぶ人もいます

There are others who feel they can't confront compassion anymore,

憐れみの感情にこれ以上向き合うことができず

and so they turn off the television and don't watch.

テレビを消し、見ないようにする人もいます

In Judaism, though, we tend to always say, there has to be a middle way.

ユダヤ教では、私たちはいつでも妥協案が必ずあると考えます

You have to, of course, be aware of the needs of others,

もちろん他者の必要としていることに気づかなければいけません

but you have to be aware in such a way that you can carry on with your life

ですがその際、自分の人生を進みながら同時に

and be of help to people.

他者に手を差し伸べるべきです

So part of compassion has to be an understanding of what makes people tick.

ですから憐れみには何が人を動かすのか理解することも必要です

And, of course, you can't do that unless you understand yourself a bit more.

And there's a lovely rabbinic interpretation of the beginnings of creation,

which says that when God created the world,

神が世界を創造したとき

God thought that it would be best to create the world

only with the divine attribute of justice.

Because, after all, God is just.

Therefore, there should be justice throughout the world.

And then God looked to the future and realized,

if the world was created just with justice, the world couldn't exist.

正義だけの世界は存続することができないと気付いたのです

So, God thought, "Nope, I'm going to create the world just with compassion."

そこで神は考えました、「では、憐れみだけが存在する世界を創ろう」

And then God looked to the future and realized that,

神はまた未来を見て気付きました

in fact, if the world were just filled with compassion,

憐れみだけにあふれる世界は

there would be anarchy and chaos.

無秩序で混乱してしまうと

There had to be limits to all things.

何にでも制限は必要です

The rabbis describe this as being like a king

ラビの教えではこのことを次のように例えます

who has a beautiful, fragile glass bowl.

美しく壊れやすいガラスの器を持った王様がいます

If you put too much cold water in, it will shatter.

器に水を入れ過ぎると壊れてしまいます

If you put boiling water in, it will shatter.

熱湯を入れても壊れてしまいます

What do you have to do? Put in a mixture of the two.

どうすればいいでしょうか？水と熱湯を一緒に入れればいいのです

And so God put both of these possibilities into the world.

ですので、神は正義と憐れみ、両方のある世界を作りました

There is something more though that has to be there.

それ以外にも必要なものがあります

And that is the translation of the feelings

それは感情をどう表現するかということ

that we may have about compassion

憐れみの感情を

into the wider world, into action.

世の中で表現すること。行動で表現すること

So, like Snoopy, we can't just lie there

スヌーピーのようにただ横になって

and think great thoughts about our neighbors.

隣に住んでいる人のことを考えているだけではだめです

We actually have to do something about it.

行動に移さなければいけないのです

And so there is also, within Judaism, this notion of love and kindness

ユダヤ教にはほかにも愛と親切に関する教えがあり

that becomes very important: "chesed."

これが非常に重要です。いわゆる「ケセド」です

All these three things, then, have to be melded together.

この3つの要素は統合しなければいけません

The idea of justice, which gives boundaries to our lives

正義があれば、私たちの人生に境界線をひくことができます

and gives us a feeling of what's right about life, what's right about living,

人生や生きることにおいて何が正しいのか判断することができます

what should we be doing, social justice.

自分は何をすべきか、何が社会的正義であるかが分ります

There has to be a willingness to do good deeds,

良い行いをする意思は必要です

but not, of course, at the expense of our own sanity.

ですが、そのために自分の心の平和を失うことがあってはいけません

You know, there's no way that you can do anything for anyone

他者に何かをしてあげるとき、やり過ぎてしまったら

if you overdo things.

意味がありません

And balancing them all in the middle is this notion of compassion,

バランスをうまくとってこそ、憐れみ深くあれるのです

which has to be there, if you like, at our very roots.

私たちは根本的に憐れみ深いのです

This idea of compassion comes to us

私たちが憐れみを自然と感じるのは

because we're made in the image of God,

私たちが神に似せて創られたためです

who is ultimately the compassionate one.

そして神は「憐れみ深い者」なのです

What does this compassion entail?

憐れみ深いとは具体的にどういうことでしょうか？

It entails understanding the pain of the other.

それは他者の痛みを理解すること

But even more than that,

さらに重要なのは

it means understanding one's connection to the whole of creation:

自分が世界と繋がっていることを理解すること

understanding that one is part of that creation,

自分が世界の一部であると理解すること

that there is a unity that underlies all that we see,

私たちが見るもの、聞くもの、感じることすべてを

all that we hear, all that we feel.

繋げているものがあると理解することです

I call that unity God.

私はそれを統一の神と呼びます

And that unity is something that connects all of creation.

世界のものすべてを繋げるものです

And, of course, in the modern world, with the environmental movement,

環境運動が活発化する現代

we're becoming even more aware of the connectivity of things,

私たちはこの繋がりに気づくことが多くなっています

that something I do here actually does matter in Africa,

that if I use too much of my carbon allowance,

it seems to be that we are causing

a great lack of rain in central and eastern Africa.

So there is a connectivity,

and I have to understand that -- as part of the creation,

And I have to understand that my needs

sometimes have to be sublimated to other needs.

This "18 minutes" business, I find quite fascinating.

この18分間のスピーチというのは、とても興味深いですね

Because in Judaism, the number 18, in Hebrew letters,

実はユダヤ教では数字の18はヘブライ語で書くと

stands for life -- the word "life."

人生を意味するのです

So, in a sense, the 18 minutes is challenging me to say,

ですから、ある意味、私は今回

"In life, this is what's important in terms of compassion."

人生において憐れみに関連して何が大切なのか話さなければいけない気がします

But, something else as well:

そしてもう一つのことについてもお話しましょう

actually, 18 minutes is important.

18分は実は大事な時間です

Because at Passover, when we have to eat unleavened bread,

ユダヤ教では過超の祭りの際、種なしのパンを食べることになっていますが

the rabbis say, what is the difference between dough that is made into bread,

ラビによると、普通のパン用のパン生地と

and dough that is made into unleavened bread, or "matzah"?

種なしパン、つまり「マッツァー」用の生地の違いは

And they say "It's 18 minutes."

18分間なのです

Because that's how long they say it takes for this dough to become leaven.

パン生地が発酵するには18分かかるからです

What does it mean, "dough becomes leaven"?

生地が発酵するとはどういうことでしょうか？

It means it gets filled with hot air.

それは生地が熱い空気で膨らむことです

What's matzah? What's unleavened bread? You don't get it.

では、マッツァー、つまり種なしパンとは何でしょうか？

Symbolically, what the rabbis say is that at Passover,

ラビによると、過越の祭りにおいて種なしパンが象徴するのは

what we have to do is try to get rid of our hot air -- our pride,

熱い空気、つまりプライドを捨てるべきだということです

our feeling that we are the most important people in the whole entire world,

自分が世界中で一番重要な存在であり

and that everything should revolve round us.

So we try and get rid of those,

and so doing, try to get rid of the habits, the emotions, the ideas

that enslave us, that make our eyes closed, give us tunnel vision

so we don't see the needs of others --

他者の必要としていることに気がつかないようにさせているのです

and free ourselves and free ourselves from that.

And that too is a basis for having compassion,

for understanding our place in the world.

自分と世界の繋がりを理解するために必要です

Now there is, in Judaism, a gorgeous story

さて、ユダヤ教にとても素敵な逸話があります

of a rich man who sat in synagogue one day.

ある日、ある裕福な男性が礼拝堂に行きました

And, as many people do, he was dozing off during the sermon.

そして礼拝中、ほかの人たち同様、ついうとうとしていました

And as he was dozing off, they were reading from the book of Leviticus in the Torah.

その時ちょうどモーセ五書のレビ記の一節を読んでいるところで

And they were saying that in the ancient times in the temple in Jerusalem,

古代の話でした。昔、エルサレムにあった寺院の祭司たちが

the priests used to have bread,

寺院にある特別なテーブルに

which they used to place into a special table in the temple in Jerusalem.

パンを置くようにしていたという内容だったのですが

The man was asleep, but he heard the words bread, temple, God, and he woke up.

うとうとしていた男性は「パン」、「寺院」、「神」と聞いて目を覚ましました

He said, "God wants bread. That's it. God wants bread. I know what God wants."

そして言いました「神はパンを望んでおられる。わかったぞ！神が望んでおられるものが！」

And he rushed home. And after the Sabbath, he made 12 loaves of bread,

それから急いで家に帰りました。安息日の後、男性はパンを12個焼き

took them to the synagogue, went into the synagogue,

そして、パンを礼拝堂に持っていき

opened the ark and said, "God, I don't know why you want this bread, but here you are."

聖櫃を開けて言いました「神様、なぜパンを必要とされているのか分りませんが、とにかくお持ちしました」

And he put it in the ark with the scrolls of the Torah.

男性はパンとモーセ五書の巻物を聖櫃の中に置きました

Then he went home.

男性は家に帰り

The cleaner came into the synagogue.

礼拝堂にはある掃除夫がやってきました

"Oh God, I'm in such trouble. I've got children to feed.

「ああ、神様。本当に困りました。子供たちを食べさせなければ」

My wife's ill. I've got no money. What can I do?"

「妻は病気で、私にはお金がありません。いったどうすればいいでしょうか？」

He goes into the synagogue. "God, will you please help me?

彼は礼拝堂に入って行きました。「神様お助けください」

Ah, what a wonderful smell."

「あれ、とてもいい匂いがする」

He goes to the ark. He opens the ark.

男性は聖櫃へ近づいていき、聖櫃を開けました

"There's bread! God, you've answered my plea. You've answered my question."

「パンだ！神様、願いを叶えてくださりありがとうございます！」

Takes the bread and goes home.

そしてパンを手に持ち、家に帰ります

Meanwhile, the rich man thinks to himself,

そのころ裕福な男性は考えていました

"I'm an idiot. God wants bread?

「自分はなんてバカなんだ。神がパンを必要とするはずはない」

God, the one who rules the entire universe, wants my bread?"

「宇宙を制する神が、私のパンを必要とするわけがない！」

He rushes to the synagogue. "I'll get it out of the ark before anybody finds it."

そして急いで礼拝堂に戻りました。「誰かが見つける前に持ち帰らなければ」

He goes in there, and it's not there.

男性は聖櫃を開きましたが、パンはありません

And he says, "God, you really did want it. You wanted my bread.

男性は言いました「神様、本当にパンを望まれていたのですね。私のパンを」

Next week, with raisins."

「来週はレーズン入りのパンをお供えしますね」

This went on for years.

男性はその後何年もパンをお供えしました

Every week, the man would bring bread with raisins,

毎週、レーズンや、そのほかいろんな材料でパンを焼き

with all sorts of good things, put it into the ark.

礼拝堂に持っていきました

Every week, the cleaner would come. "God you've answered my plea again."

一方、掃除夫も毎週礼拝堂を訪れました。「神様、また答えてくださったのですね」

Take the bread. Take it home.

そしてパンを手に取り、持ち帰りました

Went on until a new rabbi came. Rabbis always spoil things.

これは新しいラビがやってくるまで続きました。ラビは本当におせっかいな存在ですね

The rabbi came in and saw what was going on.

ラビは何が起こっているかに気づき

And he called the two of them to his office.

二人を自分のところに呼び

And he said, you know, "This is what's happening."

本当は何が起こっているのか二人に話しました

And the rich man -- oh, dear -- crestfallen.

裕福な男性は、哀れにも、意気消沈して言いました

"You mean God didn't want my bread?"

「神はパンを望んでいらっしゃらなかったということですか？」

And the poor man said, "And you mean God didn't answer my pleas?"

貧しい男性は言いました「神様は私には答えてくださらなかったということですか？」

And the rabbi said, "You've misunderstood me.

「そうではありません」ラビは言いました

You've misunderstood totally," he said.

「あなた方は完全に勘違いされているようですね」

"Of course, what you are doing," he said to the rich man,

ラビは裕福な男性に向かって言いました

"is answering God's plea that we should be compassionate.

「あなたは人は憐れみ深くあるべきという神の願いに答えているのです」

And God," he said to the poor man, "is answering your plea

貧しい男性にはこう言いました

that people should be compassionate and give."

「そして神は人は憐れみ深く、与えるべきだというあなたの願いに答えているのです」

He looked at the rich man. He held the rich man's hands and said,

ラビは裕福な男性の手を取り言いました

"Don't you understand?" He said, "These are the hands of God."

「お気づきですか？あなたのこの手は神の手なのです」

So that is the way I feel:

ですから、憐れみ深くあるためには

that I can only try to approach this notion of being compassionate,

そして世界は繋がっており一つであると理解するには

of understanding that there is a connectivity, that there is a unity in this world;

このような姿勢がなければできないと思うのです

that I want to try and serve that unity,

そして、このような姿勢で私はこの一つの世界に貢献したいと思います

and that I can try and do that by understanding, I hope,

そうするには他者の痛みを理解するよう努力し

trying to understand something of the pain of others;

その一方で限界があることや、人は自分に降りかかった問題に対して

but understanding that there are limits, that people have to bear responsibility

責任を負わなければいけない場合もあること

for some of the problems that come upon them;

そして、人の力には限界があり、与えたくても

and that I have to understand that there are limits to my energy,

すべてを与えることができないことなど

to the giving I can give.

理解しなければいけません

I have to reevaluate them,

私は物質的なものや

try and separate out the material things

自分を制限しているかもしれない感情について

and my emotions that may be enslaving me,

改めて考え、切り離さなければいけません

so that I can see the world clearly.

そうして初めて、この世界をはっきりと見ることができるのです

And then I have to try to see in what ways

そして、私はどうすればこの手を

I can make these the hands of God.

「神の手」にできるのか模索していかなければいけません

And so try to bring compassion to life in this world.

そしてこの世界に憐れみをもたらすよう努力していきたいと思います
