War has been a part of my life since I can remember.

از وقتی یادمه جنگ بخشی از زندگیم بوده.

I was born in Afghanistan, just six months after the Soviets invaded,

من در افغانستان به دنیا اومدم، درست شش ماه پس از تجاوز شوروی،

and even though I was too young to understand what was happening,

I had a deep sense of the suffering and the fear around me.

Those early experiences had a major impact on how I now think about war and conflict.

اون تجربه‌های اول اثر عمیقی گذاشته در اینکه حالا درباره جنگ و دعوا چه فکر می‌کنم.

I learned that when people have a fundamental issue at stake,

یاد گرفتم که وقتی مردم به یک موضوع اساسی می‌رسند،

for most of them,

برای بیشتر اونها،

giving in is not an option.

تسلیم شدنی در کار نیست.

For these types conflicts --

در این نوع دعواها--

when people's rights are violated,

when their countries are occupied,

when they're oppressed and humiliated --

وقتی تعدی و تحقیر میشه--

they need a powerful way to resist and to fight back.

Which means that no matter how destructive and terrible violence is,

این یعنی هر قدر هم که خشونت مخرب و وحشتناک باشه،

if people see it as their only choice,

اگه مردم راه دیگه‌ای نداشته باشند،

they will use it.

ازش استفاده می‌کنند.

Most of us are concerned with the level of violence in the world.

بیشتر ما نگران شدت خشونت در جهان هستیم.

But we're not going to end war

اما نمیتونیم به جنگ خاتمه بدیم

by telling people that violence is morally wrong.

با گفتن اینکه خشونت از نظر اخلاقی درست نیست.

Instead, we must offer them a tool

به جاش، باید راهی پیشنهاد بدیم

that's at least as powerful and as effective as violence.

که دست کم به اندازه خشونت قوی و مؤثر باشه.

This is the work I do.

این کاری که من انجام میدم.

For the past 13 years,

طی ۱۳ سال گذشته،

I've been teaching people

دارم به مردم یاد میدم

in some of the most difficult situations around the world

که چطور در سختترین موقعیتها در جهان

how they can use nonviolent struggle to conduct conflict.

میتونند بدون خشونت مبارزه کنند.

Most people associate this type of action with Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

بیشتر مردم این کارها رو به گاندی و مارتین لوترکینگ ربط میدند.

But people have been using nonviolent action for thousands of years.

اما هزاران ساله که مردم دارند بدون خشونت مبارزه می کنند.

In fact, most of the rights that we have today in this country --

در واقع، بیشتر حقوقی که ما امروز در این کشور داریم--

as women,

به عنوان زنان،

as minorities,

به عنوان اقلیت‌ها،

as workers,

به عنوان کارگران،

as people of different sexual orientations

به عنوان افرادی که تمایلات جنسی متفاوت داریم

and citizens concerned with the environment --

و شهروندانی که نگران محیط زیست هستند--

these rights weren't handed to us.

They were won by people who fought for them

and who sacrificed for them.

But because we haven't learned from this history,

nonviolent struggle as a technique is widely misunderstood.

I met recently with a group of Ethiopian activists,

and they told me something that I hear a lot.

و اونها به من چیزی گفتن که زیاد شنیدم.

They said they'd already tried nonviolent action,

اونها گفتن که قبلاً اقدام بدون خشونت رو امتحان کردند،

and it hadn't worked.

و مؤثر نبوده.

Years ago they held a protest.

سالها پیش پروژه‌ای اجرا کردند.

The government arrested everyone, and that was the end of that.

دولت همه رو بازداشت کرد و آخرش این بود.

The idea that nonviolent struggle is equivalent to street protests

این ایده که مبارزه بدون خشونت معادل اعتراضات خیابانی است

is a real problem.

یک مسئله بزرگه.

Because although protests can be a great way to show that people want change,

چون با اینکه اعتراضات میتونه راه خوبی باشه برای نشون دادن اینکه مردم تغییر میخواند،

on their own, they don't actually create change --

به خودی خود نمیتونه عملاً باعث تغییر بشه--

at least change that is fundamental.

دست کم تغییری که بنیادی باشه.

Powerful opponents are not going to give people what they want

مخالفین قدرتمند نمیتونند چیزی رو که میخواند به مردم بدند

just because they asked nicely ...

تنها به این دلیل که اونو با ظرافت درخواست کردن--

or even not so nicely.

یا حتی نه تا این حد با ظرافت.

Nonviolent struggle works by destroying an opponent,

مبارزه بدون خشونت باعث تخریب رقیب میشه،

not physically,

نه تخریب فیزیکی،

but by identifying the institutions that an opponent needs to survive,

بلکه با شناسایی نهادهایی که رقیب برای بقاء لازم داره،

and then denying them those sources of power.

و بعد سلب اون منابع قدرت از اونها.

Nonviolent activists can neutralize the military

فعالان حرکت بدون خشونت میتونند ارتش رو خنثی کنند

by causing soldiers to defect.

با وادار کردن سربازان به تسلیم.

They can disrupt the economy through strikes and boycotts.

اونها میتونند با اعتصاب و تحریم اقتصاد رو مختل کنند.

And they can challenge government propaganda

و میتونند تبلیغات دولتی رو به چالش بکشند

by creating alternative media.

با ایجاد رسانه های جایگزین.

There are a variety of methods that can be used to do this.

راههای مختلفی برای این کار هست.

My colleague and mentor, Gene Sharp,

همکار و معلم من، جن شارپ،

has identified 198 methods of nonviolent action.

۱۹۸ راه برای اقدام بدون خشونت پیدا کرده.

And protest is only one.

و اعتراض فقط یکی از اونهاست.

Let me give you a recent example.

بذارین یه مثال روز بزنم.

Until a few months ago,

تا یکی دو ماه پیش،

Guatemala was ruled by corrupt former military officials

گواتمالا در دست مقامات فاسد پیشین ارتش بود

with ties to organized crime.

که با جنایات سازمان یافته ارتباط داشتند.

People were generally aware of this,

مردم اغلب اینو میدونستند،

but most of them felt powerless to do anything about it --

اما بیشتر اونها احساس می‌کردند نمی‌تونند کاری کنند--

until one group of citizens, just 12 regular people,

تا اینکه گروهی از شهروندان، فقط ۱۲ فرد عادی،

put out a call on Facebook to their friends

در فیسبوک از دوستان خود خواستند

to meet in the central plaza, holding signs with a message:

در میدان مرکزی جمع بشند، با در دست داشتن یه نوشته:

"Renuncia YA" --

"Renuncia YA"--

resign already.

یعنی زودتر استعفا بده.

To their surprise,

با کمال تعجب،

30,000 people showed up.

سی هزار نفر جمع شدند.

They stayed there for months as protests spread throughout the country.

اونها با گسترش اعتراضات به سراسر کشور ماهها اونجا موندند.

At one point,

کار به جایی کشید

the organizers delivered hundreds of eggs to various government buildings

که برگزارکنندگان صدها تخم مرغ به ساختمانهای مختلف دولتی فرستادند

with a message:

با این پیام که:

"If you don't have the huevos" --

«اگه شما تخم ندارید»--

the balls --

بیضه--

"to stop corrupt candidates from running for office,

«که جلوی مقامات فاسد رو بگیرید،

you can borrow ours."

میتونید مال ما رو قرض بگیرید.»

President Molina responded

رئیس جمهور مولینا پاسخ داد

by vowing that he would never step down.

با تأکید بر اینکه هرگز استعفا نمیده.

And the activists realized that they couldn't just keep protesting

و فعالان متوجه شدند که نمی تونند اکتفا کنند به اعتراض

and ask the president to resign.

و درخواست استعفای رئیس جمهور.

They needed to leave him no choice.

باید هیچ راهی براش نمیگذاشتند.

So they organized a general strike,

پس یک اعتصاب عمومی ترتیب دادند،

in which people throughout the country refused to work.

تا همه مردم در سراسر کشور دست از کار بکشند.

In Guatemala City alone,

تنها در شهر گواتمالا،

over 400 businesses and schools shut their doors.

بیش از ۴۰۰ شرکت و مدرسه تعطیل شد.

Meanwhile,

در همین حال،

farmers throughout the country blocked major roads.

همه کشاورزان جاده‌های اصلی رو بستند.

Within five days,

در عرض ۵ روز،

the president,

along with dozens of other government officials,

resigned already.

I've been greatly inspired

من به شدت تحت تأثیر

by the creativity and bravery of people using nonviolent action

in nearly every country in the world.

تقریباً در هر کشوری در جهان.

For example,

مثلاً،

recently a group of activists in Uganda

اخیراً گروهی از فعالان در اوگاندا

released a crate of pigs in the streets.

دسته‌ای خوک رو در خیابانها رها کردند.

You can see here that the police are confused about what to do with them.

اینجا میتونید ببینید که پلیس نمیدونه با اونا چکار کنه.

The pigs were painted the color of the ruling party.

خوکها رو به رنگ حزب حاکم رنگ آمیزی کردند.

One pig was even wearing a hat,

یه خوک حتی کلاه داشت،

a hat that people recognized.

کلاهی که مردم میشناختند.

Activists around the world are getting better at grabbing headlines,

کم کم فعالان در همه جای جهان بهتر میتونند به صدر اخبار برند،

but these isolated actions do very little

اما این اقدامات پراکنده کم اثر خواهد بود

if they're not part of a larger strategy.

اگه بخشی از یک راهبرد بزرگتر نباشه.

A general wouldn't march his troops into battle

یه فرمانده نیروهاش رو وارد جنگ نمی‌کنه

unless he had a plan to win the war.

مگر اینکه طرحی برای پیروز شدن در جنگ داشته باشه.

Yet this is how most of the world's nonviolent movements operate.

اما بیشتر حرکات بدون خشونت در جهان اینطوری انجام میشه.

Nonviolent struggle is just as complex as military warfare,

مبارزه بدون خشونت درست به اندازه نبرد نظامی پیچیده است،

if not more.

اگر پیچیده‌تر از اون نباشه.

Its participants must be well-trained and have clear objectives,

شرکت کنندگان باید کاملاً آموزش دیده باشند و اهداف روشنی داشته باشند،

and its leaders must have a strategy of how to achieve those objectives.

و رهبران باید راهبردی برای دستیابی به اون اهداف داشته باشند.

The technique of war has been developed over thousands of years

فنون جنگی در عرض هزاران سال ایجاد شده

with massive resources

با منابع بی‌شمار

and some of our best minds dedicated to understanding

و برخی از بهترین فکرهای ما صرف فهمیدن

and improving how it works.

و ارتقای این فنون شده.

Meanwhile, nonviolent struggle is rarely systematically studied,

این در حالیه که، مبارزه بدون خشونت به ندرت مورد مطالعه جامع قرار گرفته،

and even though the number is growing,

و با وجودی که این تعداد در حال رشده،

there are still only a few dozen people in the world who are teaching it.

This is dangerous,

این خطرناکه،

because we now know that our old approaches of dealing with conflict

چون حالا ما میدونیم که روشهای قدیمی برخورد با تعارض

are not adequate for the new challenges that we're facing.

برای چالشهای جدید پیش رو کافی نیست.

The US government recently admitted

اخیراً دولت ایالات متحده پذیرفت

that it's in a stalemate in its war against ISIS.

که در جنگ علیه داعش به بن بست رسیده.

But what most people don't know

اما چیزی که بیشتر مردم نمیدونند

is that people have stood up to ISIS using nonviolent action.

اینه که مردم با روشهای بدون خشونت جلوی داعش ایستادند.

When ISIS captured Mosul in June 2014,

وقتی داعش در ژوئن ۲۰۱۴موصل رو گرفت،

they announced that they were putting in place a new public school curriculum,

اعلام کرد دروس جدیدی در مدارس ایجاد خواهد کرد

based on their own extremist ideology.

بر اساس ایدئولوژی افراطی خودش.

But on the first day of school,

اما روز اول مدرسه،

not a single child showed up.

حتی یه بچه حاضر نشد.

Parents simply refused to send them.

والدین صرفاً از فرستادن اونها خودداری کردن.

They told journalists they would rather homeschool their children

خبرنگاران گفتن ترجیح میدند خودشون تو خونه به بچه‌هاشون درس بدند

than to have them brainwashed.

تا اینکه اجازه بدند اونها شستشوی مغزی بشند.

This is an example of just one act of defiance

این تنها یک مثال از مخالفت بود

in just one city.

تنها در یک شهر.

But what if it was coordinated

اما چی میشد اگه این حرکت هماهنگ بود

with the dozens of other acts of nonviolent resistance

با دهها حرکت دیگه به روش مقاومت بدون خشونت

that have taken place against ISIS?

که مقابل داعش انجام شده؟

What if the parents' boycott was part of a larger strategy

چی میشد اگه خودداری والدین بخشی از یک راهبرد بزرگتر بود

to identify and cut off the resources that ISIS needs to function;

برای شناسایی و قطع منابعی که داعش برای حکومت لازم داره؛

the skilled labor needed to produce food;

نیروی کار ماهر مورد نیاز برای تولید غذا؛

the engineers needed to extract and refine oil;

مهندسین لازم برای استخراج و پالایش نفت؛

the media infrastructure and communications networks

ابزار رسانه‌ای و شبکه‌های ارتباطی

and transportation systems,

و سامانه‌های حمل و نقل،

and the local businesses that ISIS relies on?

و بازارهای منطقه ای که داعش به اونها وابسته س؟

It may be difficult to imagine defeating ISIS

ممکنه تصور شکست داعش سخت باشه

with action that is nonviolent.

با اقداماتی که بدون خشونت باشه.

But it's time we challenge the way we think about conflict

اما وقت اونه که نحوه ی تفکر خودمون درباره ی مبارزه رو به چالش بکشیم

and the choices we have in facing it.

و گزینه‌هایی که در برخورد با اون داریم.

Here's an idea worth spreading:

این ایده‌ای است که ارزش انتشار داره:

let's learn more about where nonviolent action has worked

بیایید بیشتر بیاموزیم در اینباره که اقدامات بدون خشونت کجا مؤثره

and how we can make it more powerful,

و چطور میتونیم کاری کنیم که مؤثرتر باشه،

just like we do with other systems and technologies

درست شبیه همون کاری که با سیستمها و فناوریهای دیگر می‌کنیم

that are constantly being refined to better meet human needs.

که پیوسته در پاسخ به نیازهای بشر در حال بهتر شدن هستند.

It may be that we can improve nonviolent action

ممکنه بتونیم حرکت بدون خشونت رو

to a point where it is increasingly used in place of war.

به نقطه ای برسونیم که به طور فزاینده جای جنگ رو بگیره.

Violence as a tool of conflict could then be abandoned

اون وقت خشونت به عنوان یک ابزار مبارزه میتونه کنار گذاشته بشه

in the same way that bows and arrows were,

همون طور که تیر و کمان کنار گذاشته شد،

because we have replaced them with weapons that are more effective.

چون سلاحهایی رو جایگزینش کردیم که مؤثرتر هستند.

With human innovation, we can make nonviolent struggle more powerful

ما با نوآوری انسان میتونیم مبارزه بدون خشونت را

than the newest and latest technologies of war.

از جدیدترین و پیشرفته‌ترین فناوریهای جنگی توانمندتر کنیم.

The greatest hope for humanity lies not in condemning violence

بزرگترین امید برای بشریت نه در محکومیت خشونت

but in making violence obsolete.

بلکه در منسوخ کردن خشونت است.
