I know I haven't been home for a while.

You are in our lovely home in Mexico,

and I'm here in the US,

fighting for our future.

You're probably watering the roses,

That's one of the things I miss the most about home --

spending time with the flowers

while you tell me stories about your childhood.

As you know, we have been living in New York City since 2015.

But life has completely changed over the past year.

بەڵام ژیان لەماوەی ساڵی ڕابردوودا بەتەواوی گۆڕاوە.

At first, New York City was about museums

سەرەتا،شاری نیۆرک دەربارەی مۆزەخانەکان بوو

and parks

هەروەها پارکەکان

and school and friends.

هەروەها خوێندنگە و هاوڕێکان.

Now it serves as a web

ئێستا وەک تۆڕێک کاردەکات

that connects me with all the other people

who are organizing to save the planet.

کە بۆ ڕزگارکردنی هەسارەکە ڕێکیان خستووە.

You know how it started for me?

دەزانی چۆن بۆ من دەستی پێکرد؟

It was Dad and his wisdom.

ئەوە باوکمو ژیری ئەو بوو.

Everything you taught him, he went and taught the world.

هەموو ئەو شتانەی فێرت کرد، ئەو ڕۆشت و فێری جیهانی کرد.

All of his words about the responsibility that we have as humans

هەموو قسەکانی دەربارەی ئەو بەرپرسیاریەتەیە کە ئێمە وەک مرۆڤ هەمانە

to live in balance with nature

تا بە هاوسەنگی لەگەڵ سروشتدا بژین

were passed down to me.

I noticed the universal disconnect to our planet

تێبینی جیهانێکی ناپەیوەند بەهەسارەکەمانەوە کرد

and remembered what you once told me:

ئەوەم بیرکەوتەوە کە جارێک پێت گوتم:

"Leave everything better than you found it."

"هەموو شتێک بە باشتری جیی بهێلە کە دۆزیتەوە."

I know you were talking about the dishes,

دەزانم باسی قاپەکانت دەکرد،

but of course, that applies to the planet as well.

بەڵام بێگومان، ئەوە بۆ هەسارەکە جێبەجێ دەکرێت.

I didn't know what to do at first.

سەرەتا نەمدەزانی چی بکەم.

The world is so big,

جیهان زۆر گەورەیە،

and it has so many bad habits.

هەروەها زۆر خووی خراپی هەیە.

I didn't know how a 15-year-old was supposed to change anything,

نەمدەزانی کە چۆن دەبێت تەمەنی ١٥ساڵ هیچ بگۆڕێت،

but I had to try.

بەڵام دەبوایە هەوڵی بۆبدەم.

To put this philosophy into practice,

بۆ ئەوەی ئەو فەلسەفەیە بخەینە کارەوە،

I joined the environmental club at my high school.

پەیوەندیم بەیانەی ژینگەیی کرد لە قوتابخانەی ئامادەییم.

However, I noticed that my classmates were talking about recycling

تێبینی ئەوەم نەکرد کە هاوپۆلەکانم باسی دووبارە بەکار هێنانەوەیان دەکرد

and watching movies about the ocean.

و سەیری فیلمەکان دەربارەی زەریا دەکەن.

It was a view of environmentalism

ڕوانگەیەکی ژینگە پارێزی بوو

that was so catered towards an ineffective way of climate activism,

ئەوە زۆر ڕازیکەر بوو بەرەوڕێگایەکی ناکاریگەر لە گۆڕانی کەشو هەوادا،

one that blames the consumer for the climate crisis

یەکێک کە گلەیی لە بەکارهێنەرەکە دەکات بۆ قەیرانی ئاو و هەوا

and preaches that temperatures are going up

و ئامۆژگاری دەکات کە پلەی گەرما بەرز دەبێتەوە

because we forgot to bring a reusable bag to the store.

لەبەر ئەوەی لەبییرمان کرد جانتا بەکارهینراوەکە بۆ کۆگاکە بهینینەوە.

You taught me that taking care of Mother Earth

فێرت کردم گرینگی بە زەوی دایک بدەم

is about every decision that we make as a collective.

دەربارەی هەموو بڕیارێک کە ئێمە وەک کۆمەل دەیدەین.

I am happy to tell you, Abuelita,

خۆشحاڵم کە پێت دەڵێم، ئەبووئەلیتا،

that I changed everybody's mind in that club.

کە مێشکی هەموو ئەوانەم گۆڕی کە لە یانەکەدان.

Instead of talking about recycling,

لەجیاتی باسی دووبارە بەکارهێنانەوە بکەن،

we started to write letters to our politicians

دەستمان کرد بە نووسینی نامە بۆ سیاسەتمەدارەکانمان

to ban soft plastic altogether.

بۆ قەدەخەکردنی هەموو پلاستیکی نەرم.

And then, the unexpected happened:

دواتر، چاوەڕواننەکراوەکە ڕوویدا:

we started striking from school.

لە قوتابخانەوە دەستمان بە مانگرتن کرد.

I know you've probably seen it on the news,

دەزانم ئەوەت لە هەواڵەکاندا بینیوە،

and maybe it's not that special anymore.

هەروەها لەوانیە چیتر زۆر تایبەت نەبیت.

But at the time, it was a huge deal, Abuelita.

بەڵام لەو کاتەدا، ئەوە زۆر گەورە بوو، ئەبولیتا.

Imagine kids not going to school, because we want people to save the world.

خەیاڵی ئەوە بکە منداڵەکان نەچنە قوتابخانە، لەبەرئەوەی دەمانەوێت خەڵک جیهان ڕزگاربکەن.

Xiye Bastida: For the first global climate strike,

باستیدا: بۆ یەکەم مان گرتن لە کەشی جیهان،

which was called on by Greta Thunberg,

کە لە لایەن گریتا تونبێرگ بانگ کرابوو،

I got 600 of my classmates to walk out with me.

٦٠٠هاوپۆلم هەبوو کە لەگەلم بێن.

Greta Thunberg is a teenager who first started striking for climate.

Her boldness inspired me,

and I was shocked by the realization

that youth could turn public opinion on social issues.

XB: I started speaking up about climate justice and Indigenous rights

and intergenerational cooperation.

That was only the beginning, though.

The busiest week of my life

سەرقاڵترین هەفتە لە ژیانمدا

will forever be the week of September 20, 2019.

٢٠ی ئەیلوولی ٢٠١٩ کە بۆ هەمیشە وادەمێنێتەوە.

Me and my friends got 300,000 people to strike for climate in New York.

من و هاوڕێکانم ٣٠٠،٠٠٠ کەسمان بەدەست هێنا بۆ مانگرتن لەسەر کەشو هەوا لە نیۆرک.

I wish you could have been there.

خۆزگە لەوێ دەبووی.

We walked through Wall Street, demanding climate justice.

بەناو شەقامی ۆلدا ڕۆشتین داوای دادپەروەری کەش و هەوامان دەکرد.

XB: That same month, I went to the United Nations Climate Summit.

I spoke on a panel with Al Gore.

لە پانێڵێکدا قسەم لەگەڵ ئەلگۆرد کرد.

I met Jay Inslee and Naomi Klein and Bill McKibben

جەی ئینسێلی و نائۆمی کلینم هەروەها بیل مکیبینم بینی

and the president of the United Nations.

هەروەها سەرۆکی نەتەوە یەکگرتووەکان.

It was the most amazing week of my life,

ئەوە خۆشترین هەفتەی ژیانم بوو،

because everyone I knew came together --

all my teachers, all my classmates ...

And even some of my favorite stores closed down to strike for climate.

If you had asked me why I did all of that,

ئەگەر پرسیارت لێکردم بۆچی ئەمانەم کردووە،

my only answer would be,

تاکە وەڵامم ئەوە دەبێت،

"How could I not?"

چۆن نەتوانم؟

It's been one year since it all started for me,

ماوەی ساڵێک بوو کە هەموو شتێک بۆ من دەستی پێکرد،

and it gets a little tiring at times.

و هەندێک جار کەمێک ماندوو کەر دەبێت.

But if there is one thing that you taught me, it's resilience.

بەڵام ئەگەر شتێک هەبێ کە فێرت کردووم ئەویش خۆڕاگرییە.

I remember that you went to Mexico City every day for 30 years

بیرمە کە بۆماوەی ٣٠ساڵ هەموو ڕۆژێک دەچوویتە مەکسیکۆ

to get money for the family.

بۆئەوەی پارە بۆ خێزانەکەت پەیدا بکەیت.

And I know that Abuelito has been going out for 20 years

هەروەها دەزانم کە ئەبولیتۆ بۆ ماوەی ٢٠ساڵە ڕۆیشتۆتە دەرەوە

to protect sacred land from big companies that want to take it.

بۆ پاراستنی خاکی پیرۆز لە کۆمپانیا گەورەکان کە دەیانەوێت بیبەن.

A year is nothing

ساڵێک هیچ نیە

compared to the struggles that our family has been through.

بەراورد بەو خەباتەی کە خێزانەکەمان پێیدا ڕۆشتوون.

And if our struggles make the world a better place,

هەروەها ئەگەر تیکۆشانەکانمان جیهانی بەرەو باشتر برد،

they will make us better people.

ئەوان ئێمە دەکەنە خەڵکی باشتر.

There have been some hardships, Abuelita.

چەن زەحمەتییەک هەبوو، ئەبوئیلیتا

Out there in the world,

لەدەرەوە لە جیهاندا،

people expect us kids to know everything,

خەڵکی چاوەڕێی ئەوە دەکەن منداڵەکانمان هەموو شتێک بزانن،

or at least they want us to.

یان هەر هیچ نەبیت لە ئێمەیان دەوێت.

They ask questions and I give answers,

ئەوان پرسیار دەکەن و من وەلام دەدەمەوە،

as if I really knew how the world works.

وەک ئەوەی بەڕاستی بزانم جیهان چۆن کاردەکات.

They want hope, and we give it.

ئەوان هیوایان دەوێت، ئێمەش پێیان دەدەین.

I have organized, written, spoken and read about climate and policy

من ڕێکم خستووە،نووسیومە،قسەم کردووە وە لەسەر سیاسەت و کەشوهەوام خوێندۆتەوە

almost every day for the past year.

نزیکەی هەموو ڕۆژێک بۆ ساڵی ڕابردوو.

And I'm just a little worried

من تەنها کەمێک نیگەرانم

that I won't be able to do enough, Abuelita.

کە توانای ئەوەم نیە بەتەواوی کار بکەم، ئەبوئەلیتا.

For me, being 18 years old and trying to save the world

بۆ من، تەمەنم ١٨ساڵە هەروەها هەوڵدەدەم جیهان بپارێزم

means being a climate activist.

مانای ئەوەیە کە چالاکیکی کەشوو هەوا بیت.

Before, maybe it meant studying to be a doctor

پێشتر، لەوانەیە بە مانای خوێندن بۆ بوون بە پزیشک بووبێ

or a politician or a researcher.

یان سیاسەتمەدار یان توێژەرێک.

But I can't wait to grow up and become one of those things.

بەڵام ناتوانم چاوەڕێی گەورەبوون یان بوون بە شتێک لەو شتانە بکەم.

The planet is suffering,

ئەو هەسارەیە ئازار دەچێژێت،

and we don't have the luxury of time anymore.

هەروەها چیتر کاتی خۆشگوزەرانیمان نیە.

Saving the world as a teenager means being good with words,

ڕزگارکردنی جیهان وەک هەرزەکارێک مانای باشبوون لەگەڵ وشەکان،

understanding the science behind the climate crisis,

تێگەیشتن لە زانست لە پشت قەیرانی کەشو هەواوە،

bringing a unique perspective into the issue to stand out

هێنانی تێڕوانینێکی بێ وێنە بۆ ناو کێشەکە تا جیاواز بێت

and forgetting about almost everything else.

هەروەها بیرچوونەوەی هەموو شتێکی تر.

But sometimes, I want to care about other things again.

بەڵام هەندێک کات، دووبارە دەمەوێت گرنگی بە شتی تر بدەم.

I want to be able to sing and dance and do gymnastics.

دەمەوێت بتوانین گۆرانی بڵێین و سەما بکەین

I truly feel that if all of us took care of the Earth

بەڕاستی هەست بەوە دەکەم ئەگەر هەموومان گرنگیمان بە زەوی دابا

as a practice,

وەک ڕاهێنانێک،

as a culture,

وەک کلتورێک،

none of us would have to be full-time climate activists.

هیچ کام لە ئێمە بۆ هەمیشەیی نابێتە چالاکوانی کەشو هەوا.

When businesses turn sustainable,

کاتیک بازرگانییەکان بەردەوام دەسوڕێنەوە،

when the power grid runs on renewable energy,

کاتێک تۆری وزە کار دەکات لەسەر وزەی نوێکردنەوە،

when the school curriculum teaches us

کاتیک بەرنامەی قوتابخانە فێرمان دەکات

that taking care of the Earth is part of our humanity,

کە گرنگیدان بە زەوی بەشێکە لە مرۆڤایەتیمان،

maybe I can do gymnastics once again.

ڕەنگە بتوانم جارێکی تر جومناستیک بکەمەوە.

Don't you think so, Abuelita?

We can do this.

All I'm trying to do with my work

ئەوەی هەولدەدەم بیکەم لە کارەکەم

is give that optimistic mindset to other people.

ئەوەیە کە ئەو ئەقڵیەتیە گەشبینی دەدات بە کەسانی تر.

But it's been a little hard.

بەڵام کەمێک سەخت بوو.

There is greed,

چاوچنۆکی هەیە،

there's pride,

شانازی هەیە،

there's money,

پارە هەیە،

and there's materialism.

هەروەها ماددە هەیە.

People make it so easy for me to talk to them,

خەڵکی ئەوە زۆر بۆ من ئاسان دەکەن تا قسەیان لەگەڵ بکەم،

but they make it so hard for me to teach them.

بەڵام زۆر قورسیان کرد بۆ ئەوەی فێریان بکەم.

I want them to have the confidence to always do their best.

دەمەوێت متمانەیان هەبێت کە هەموو کات باشترین ئەنجام بدەن.

I want them to have the heart and the courage

دەمەوێت دڵو بوێرییان هەبیت

to love the world,

بۆ خۆشویستنی جیهان،

just like you taught me.

I wrote this letter to thank you.

Thank you for inviting me to love the world

that hope and optimism are the most powerful tools we have

I do this work because you showed me
