I know I haven't been home for a while.

and I'm here in the US,

fighting for our future.

You're probably watering the roses,

taking care of the peaches

and making sure your turtles are well-fed.

That's one of the things I miss the most about home --

그게 제가 집에 대해 , 가장 그리운 것들 중 하나예요.

spending time with the flowers

할머니의 어릴적 이야기를 듣는 동안

while you tell me stories about your childhood.

꽃들과 시간을 보내는 것도 그리워요.

As you know, we have been living in New York City since 2015.

할머니도 아시다시피, 우리는 2015년부터 뉴욕에 살았잖아요.

But life has completely changed over the past year.

하지만 지난 몇년 동안, 저희의 삶은 완전히 변했어요.

At first, New York City was about museums

처음에는, 뉴욕 도시의 박물관과 공원,

and parks

and school and friends.

그리고 학교와 친구들이 전부였어요.

Now it serves as a web

that connects me with all the other people

모든 다른 사람들과 저를 연결하는

who are organizing to save the planet.

You know how it started for me?

It was Dad and his wisdom.

아버지의 지혜였어요.

Everything you taught him, he went and taught the world.

All of his words about the responsibility that we have as humans

자연과 균형 속에서 살아가기 위해

to live in balance with nature

인간으로써 가져야할 책임감에 대한

were passed down to me.

모든 아버지의 말씀이 제게 전해졌어요.

I noticed the universal disconnect to our planet

광범위한 지구와의 단절을 알아차리곤,

and remembered what you once told me:

할머니께서 언젠가 제게 해주신 말씀이 떠올랐어요.

"Leave everything better than you found it."

"모든 걸 네가 발견했을 때 보다, 더 좋게 남기렴."

I know you were talking about the dishes,

사실 할머니께서 설거지에 대해 말씀하신 거란걸 알아요.

but of course, that applies to the planet as well.

하지만 물론 세상에도 적용 되겠죠.

I didn't know what to do at first.

처음엔 무엇을 해야 할 지 몰랐어요.

The world is so big,

세상은 정말 크고

and it has so many bad habits.

너무나 많은 좋지 않은 습관이 있어요.

I didn't know how a 15-year-old was supposed to change anything,

15살이 어떻게 세상을 바꿀 수 있는지 몰랐어요.

but I had to try.

그래도 시도해야만 했어요.

To put this philosophy into practice,

이 철학을 실행으로 옮기기 위해서,

I joined the environmental club at my high school.

고등학교의 환경 동아리에 가입했어요.

However, I noticed that my classmates were talking about recycling

하지만, 동급생들은 재활용이나

and watching movies about the ocean.

해양에 관한 영화를 보는 것에 대해 얘기했어요.

It was a view of environmentalism

이것은 기후 활동의 비효율적인 방법에 집중한

that was so catered towards an ineffective way of climate activism,

환경주의 관점이였고,

one that blames the consumer for the climate crisis

기후 위기가 소비자들 때문에

and preaches that temperatures are going up

온도가 상승한다고 전하는 관점이였어요.

because we forgot to bring a reusable bag to the store.

재활용 가능한 가방을 가게에 갖고 가는 걸 잊어버렸기 때문이란거죠.

You taught me that taking care of Mother Earth

할머니께서는 대자연을 돌보는 일은

is about every decision that we make as a collective.

우리가 집단으로서 만드는 모든 결정이라고 가르쳐주셨죠.

I am happy to tell you, Abuelita,

할머니, 제가 동아리 사람들의

that I changed everybody's mind in that club.

마음을 바꿨다는 이야기를 하게 되어 기뻐요.

Instead of talking about recycling,

우리는 재활용에 대해 얘기하는 대신에,

we started to write letters to our politicians

연성 플라스틱을 완전히 금지하기 위해

to ban soft plastic altogether.

정치인들에게 편지를 쓰기 시작했어요.

And then, the unexpected happened:

그리고 예상치 못한 일이 일어났어요.

we started striking from school.

저희는 학교에서 파업하기 시작했어요.

I know you've probably seen it on the news,

아마도 뉴스에서 보셨을 수도 있고,

and maybe it's not that special anymore.

더 이상 특별한 일이 아닐 수도 있어요.

But at the time, it was a huge deal, Abuelita.

하지만, 할머니. 이번에는 엄청난 일이에요.

Imagine kids not going to school, because we want people to save the world.

아이들이 학교에 가지 않는다고 상상해보세요.

지구를 보호하자고 사람들을 설득하기 위해서요.

Xiye Bastida: For the first global climate strike,

which was called on by Greta Thunberg,

I got 600 of my classmates to walk out with me.

600명의 학우들이 저와 함께 걸었어요.

Greta Thunberg is a teenager who first started striking for climate.

그레타 툰버그는 기후를 위해 처음 파업을 시작한 10대에요.

Her boldness inspired me,

그녀의 대담함이 저에게 영감을 주었고,

and I was shocked by the realization

젊은이가 사회 문제 여론을 바꿀 수 있다는,

that youth could turn public opinion on social issues.

자각에 충격을 받았어요.

운동은 폭발적으로 늘어났죠.

The movement exploded.

XB: And I became one of the main organizers

저는 미국 뉴욕과 세계에서

for New York, the US and the world.

XB: I started speaking up about climate justice and Indigenous rights

and intergenerational cooperation.

That was only the beginning, though.

이건 시작에 불과했죠.

The busiest week of my life

제 인생에서 가장 바빴던 주는,

will forever be the week of September 20, 2019.

영원히 2019년 9월 20일 일거에요.

Me and my friends got 300,000 people to strike for climate in New York.

뉴욕에서 기후 시위를 위해 30만명의 사람들이

저와 제 친구들과 함께해주었어요.

할머니도 함께 하셨으면 좋았을텐데요.

I wish you could have been there.

We walked through Wall Street, demanding climate justice.

저희는 기후 정의를 요구하며, 월 스트릿을 걸었어요.

XB: That same month, I went to the United Nations Climate Summit.

I spoke on a panel with Al Gore.

I met Jay Inslee and Naomi Klein and Bill McKibben

제이 인슬리, 나오미 클라인, 빌 맥키번, 그리고

and the president of the United Nations.

UN총장님도 만났어요.

It was the most amazing week of my life,

제 인생에서 가장 놀라운 한주였어요.

because everyone I knew came together --

제가 아는 모든 사람들이 함께 했어요.

all my teachers, all my classmates ...

저의 모든 선생님들과 모든 학우들

And even some of my favorite stores closed down to strike for climate.

그리고 기후 시위를 위해 문 닫은, 제가 좋아하는 몇몇의 상점까지요.

If you had asked me why I did all of that,

만약 할머니께서 왜 이 모든 걸 했느냐 물어보신다면,

my only answer would be,

저의 유일한 대답은 이거예요.

"How could I not?"

"어떻게 하지 않을 수가 있어요?"

It's been one year since it all started for me,

제가 이 모든 일을 시작한지 1년이 흘렀고,

and it gets a little tiring at times.

때로는 조금 지치기도 해요.

But if there is one thing that you taught me, it's resilience.

하지만 할머니께서 제게 가르쳐주신 것 하나가 바로 다시 시작하는 힘이죠.

I remember that you went to Mexico City every day for 30 years

할머니께서 가족을 위해 돈을 벌려고 30년간 매일 멕시코 시티에 가신 것을

to get money for the family.

저는 기억해요.

And I know that Abuelito has been going out for 20 years

그리고 할머니께서 20년동안 신성한 토지를 빼앗으려는 큰 회사로부터

to protect sacred land from big companies that want to take it.

그걸 지키기 위해 활동하신 것을 알아요.

A year is nothing

우리 가족이 지나쳐 온 고난들에 비하면 제 1년은 아무것도 아니에요.

compared to the struggles that our family has been through.

And if our struggles make the world a better place,

그리고 만약 우리의 고난이 나은 세상을 만들 수 있다면,

they will make us better people.

그건 우리를 더 나은 사람으로 만들테죠.

There have been some hardships, Abuelita.

고난들도 있었어요, 할머니.

Out there in the world,

세상에는,

people expect us kids to know everything,

아이들이 모든 것을 알기를 기대하거나

or at least they want us to.

혹은 적어도 그렇길 바라는 사람들이 있어요.

They ask questions and I give answers,

그들이 질문을 하면 저는 이렇게 답해요.

as if I really knew how the world works.

마치 제가 세상이 어떻게 돌아가는지 아는 것 처럼요.

They want hope, and we give it.

그들이 희망을 원하면, 우리는 희망을 줍니다.

I have organized, written, spoken and read about climate and policy

저는 작년 한해동안 매일 기후 정책에 대해 관리하고

almost every day for the past year.

기록하고 연설해왔어요.

And I'm just a little worried

할머니. 전 조금 걱정이 되네요.

that I won't be able to do enough, Abuelita.

제가 충분히 해내지 못할까봐요.

For me, being 18 years old and trying to save the world

저에겐, 18살이면서 지구를 보호하기 위해 노력하는 것은

means being a climate activist.

기후 활동가가 되는 것을 의미해요.

Before, maybe it meant studying to be a doctor

전에는 아마도 의사나, 정치가 혹은 연구원이

or a politician or a researcher.

되기 위해 공부했을지도 모르겠지만요.

But I can't wait to grow up and become one of those things.

하지만, 저는 성장해서 그런 사람이 되기를 기다릴 수 없어요.

The planet is suffering,

지구는 고통받고 있고,

and we don't have the luxury of time anymore.

저희에겐 더 이상 낭비할 그런 시간이 없어요.

Saving the world as a teenager means being good with words,

10대로써 지구를 보호하는 일은 말을 잘 하는 것이고,

understanding the science behind the climate crisis,

기후 위기 속의 과학을 이해하는 일이며,

bringing a unique perspective into the issue to stand out

주장해야 할 문제에 대해 독특한 관점을 갖는 것이고,

and forgetting about almost everything else.

거의 모든 다른 것들에 대해 잊어버리는 거에요.

But sometimes, I want to care about other things again.

하지만 저도 가끔은, 다른 것들에 대해 신경쓰고 싶어요.

I want to be able to sing and dance and do gymnastics.

저도 노래하고 춤추고 운동하고 싶어요.

I truly feel that if all of us took care of the Earth

제가 진심으로 느끼는건, 만약 우리 모두가 지구를

as a practice,

실천을 통해서,

as a culture,

문화의 일부로 신경 썼다면,

none of us would have to be full-time climate activists.

우리 중 어느 누구도 정규직 기후 활동가가 될 필요는 없었을테죠.

When businesses turn sustainable,

회사들이 지속 가능한 사업을 할 때,

when the power grid runs on renewable energy,

에너지 시설망이 재생 가능한 에너지를 사용할 때,

when the school curriculum teaches us

학교 교육과정이 우리에게

that taking care of the Earth is part of our humanity,

지구를 돌보는 것이 우리 인간성의 한 부분이라고 가르칠 때

maybe I can do gymnastics once again.

아마도 저는 다시 체조를 할 수 있을지도요.

Don't you think so, Abuelita?

그렇지 않나요, 할머니?

We can do this.

우리는 할 수 있어요.

All I'm trying to do with my work

제 일을 하면서 제가 노력한 모든 것들은

is give that optimistic mindset to other people.

다른 사람에게 긍정적인 태도를 주는 거에요.

But it's been a little hard.

하지만, 조금은 힘들었어요.

There is greed,

탐욕과

there's pride,

자만과

there's money,

돈과

and there's materialism.

물질만능주의가 있어요.

People make it so easy for me to talk to them,

사람들은 제가 그것에 대해 얘기하는 것은 쉽게 해주지만

but they make it so hard for me to teach them.

그것에 대해 가르치는 것은 어렵게 만들어요.

I want them to have the confidence to always do their best.

저는 그들이 항상 최선을 다하도록, 자신감을 갖기를 원해요.

I want them to have the heart and the courage

저는 그들이 세상을 사랑할 용기와 심장을 갖기를 바래요.

to love the world,

just like you taught me.

바로 할머니께서 가르쳐 주신 것 처럼요.

I wrote this letter to thank you.

Thank you for inviting me to love the world

제가 이 세상에 태어났을 때부터

since the moment I was born.

저에게 희망과 낙관이

that hope and optimism are the most powerful tools we have

to tackle any problem.

I do this work because you showed me
