I know I haven't been home for a while.

That's one of the things I miss the most about home --

As you know, we have been living in New York City since 2015.

But life has completely changed over the past year.

At first, New York City was about museums

and parks

and school and friends.

学校であり 友達でした

Now it serves as a web

that connects me with all the other people

who are organizing to save the planet.

You know how it started for me?

It was Dad and his wisdom.

お父さんと その知恵でした

Everything you taught him, he went and taught the world.

おばあちゃんの英知の全てを お父さんは世界中に広めています

All of his words about the responsibility that we have as humans

自然とバランスを取って 生きるという

人間としての責任についての お父さんの言葉はすべて

to live in balance with nature

were passed down to me.

私に伝わっています

I noticed the universal disconnect to our planet

地球との繋がりをみんなが 失っていることに気付いて

and remembered what you once told me:

おばあちゃんの言葉を 思い出しました

"Leave everything better than you found it."

「何でも受け取った時より きれいにして返すこと」

I know you were talking about the dishes,

お皿のことを言っていたのは 分かってるけど

but of course, that applies to the planet as well.

これは地球にも 当てはまるんです

I didn't know what to do at first.

最初は何をすればいいのか 分かりませんでした

The world is so big,

世界はあまりにも大きく

and it has so many bad habits.

良くない慣行も たくさんあります

I didn't know how a 15-year-old was supposed to change anything,

15歳で何ができるのか 分からなかったけど

やらずにいられませんでした

but I had to try.

To put this philosophy into practice,

I joined the environmental club at my high school.

However, I noticed that my classmates were talking about recycling

and watching movies about the ocean.

It was a view of environmentalism

that was so catered towards an ineffective way of climate activism,

one that blames the consumer for the climate crisis

and preaches that temperatures are going up

because we forgot to bring a reusable bag to the store.

You taught me that taking care of Mother Earth

母なる地球を守るには

is about every decision that we make as a collective.

みんなでする決断の１つ１つが大事だと 教えてくれましたよね

I am happy to tell you, Abuelita,

クラブのみんなの考え方を 変えられたことを

that I changed everybody's mind in that club.

誇りに思っています

Instead of talking about recycling,

リサイクルの話をする代わりに

we started to write letters to our politicians

政治家に手紙を書いて

to ban soft plastic altogether.

プラスチック包装を全て 禁止するよう求めました

And then, the unexpected happened:

それから 予想もしなかった 展開があって

we started striking from school.

私たちは学校ストライキを 始めました

I know you've probably seen it on the news,

ニュースでもう 見たかもしれないし

and maybe it's not that special anymore.

今では珍しくもない かもしれないけど

But at the time, it was a huge deal, Abuelita.

Imagine kids not going to school, because we want people to save the world.

Xiye Bastida: For the first global climate strike,

which was called on by Greta Thunberg,

I got 600 of my classmates to walk out with me.

Greta Thunberg is a teenager who first started striking for climate.

Her boldness inspired me,

and I was shocked by the realization

that youth could turn public opinion on social issues.

That was only the beginning, though.

The busiest week of my life

Me and my friends got 300,000 people to strike for climate in New York.

I wish you could have been there.

We walked through Wall Street, demanding climate justice.

XB: That same month, I went to the United Nations Climate Summit.

I spoke on a panel with Al Gore.

I met Jay Inslee and Naomi Klein and Bill McKibben

It was the most amazing week of my life,

because everyone I knew came together --

And even some of my favorite stores closed down to strike for climate.

If you had asked me why I did all of that,

my only answer would be,

"How could I not?"

It's been one year since it all started for me,

私がこの活動を始めて １年になり

and it gets a little tiring at times.

大変だと思うときもありますが

But if there is one thing that you taught me, it's resilience.

おばちゃんの教えてくれた 粘り強さがあります

I remember that you went to Mexico City every day for 30 years

おばあちゃんが家族のため 30年間毎日

メキシコシティに働きに出ていたのを 忘れはしません

to get money for the family.

And I know that Abuelito has been going out for 20 years

神聖な土地を 大企業の手から守るために

to protect sacred land from big companies that want to take it.

20年間活動していたのも 知っています

A year is nothing

家族が乗り越えてきた 苦労に比べたら

compared to the struggles that our family has been through.

私の１年なんて 何でもありません

And if our struggles make the world a better place,

私たちの苦労が 世界を良くするのなら

私たちを良い人間にも してくれることでしょう

they will make us better people.

There have been some hardships, Abuelita.

難しい時もありました

Out there in the world,

世の人たちは

people expect us kids to know everything,

子供がすべてを 知っていることを

or at least they want us to.

期待しているみたいで

They ask questions and I give answers,

私が世界のしくみを 何でも知ってるかのように

as if I really knew how the world works.

They want hope, and we give it.

I have organized, written, spoken and read about climate and policy

almost every day for the past year.

And I'm just a little worried

that I won't be able to do enough, Abuelita.

For me, being 18 years old and trying to save the world

means being a climate activist.

気候のための活動家になる ということです

Before, maybe it meant studying to be a doctor

以前なら それは 専門の勉強をして

医者や 政治家や 研究者になる ということだったかもしれませんが

or a politician or a researcher.

But I can't wait to grow up and become one of those things.

The planet is suffering,

地球は苦しんでいて

and we don't have the luxury of time anymore.

Saving the world as a teenager means being good with words,

十代の子が世界を救うには 言葉を上手く使い

understanding the science behind the climate crisis,

bringing a unique perspective into the issue to stand out

and forgetting about almost everything else.

But sometimes, I want to care about other things again.

I want to be able to sing and dance and do gymnastics.

I truly feel that if all of us took care of the Earth

習慣として 文化として 気にかけるようになったら

as a practice,

as a culture,

none of us would have to be full-time climate activists.

気候のための専従の活動家なんて いらなくなると思います

When businesses turn sustainable,

企業がサスティナビリティを重視し

when the power grid runs on renewable energy,

電力に再生可能エネルギーを使い

when the school curriculum teaches us

地球を気にかけるのも人間性の一部だと 学校で教えるなら

that taking care of the Earth is part of our humanity,

maybe I can do gymnastics once again.

私もまた体操をしていられるように なるかもしれません

Don't you think so, Abuelita?

We can do this.

できることなんです

All I'm trying to do with my work

私が活動しているのは

is give that optimistic mindset to other people.

みんなが前向きな考え方を できるようにするためです

But it's been a little hard.

でも 結構大変です

There is greed,

欲や

there's pride,

見栄や

there's money,

お金や

and there's materialism.

物質主義の問題があります

People make it so easy for me to talk to them,

聞いてもらうのは簡単ですが

but they make it so hard for me to teach them.

教えるのは難しいんです

I want them to have the confidence to always do their best.

いつも最善を尽くすための自信を みんなに持ってほしい

I want them to have the heart and the courage

おばあちゃんが教えてくれた 世界を愛する心と勇気を

to love the world,

just like you taught me.

I wrote this letter to thank you.

Thank you for inviting me to love the world

私が生まれた時から

世界を愛せるように してくれたことに

since the moment I was born.

Thank you for laughing at everything.

何にでも笑ってくれたことに

Thank you for teaching me

どんな問題に対しても

that hope and optimism are the most powerful tools we have

希望と楽観で対するのが一番だと

to tackle any problem.

I do this work because you showed me

that resilience, love and knowledge
