A room full of boys.

ژوورێکی پڕ لە کوڕ.

A girl child, hardly nine or ten years old,

کچێکی منداڵ، کە هێشتا نەبووە بە نۆ یان دە ساڵ،

she is sitting in the center of the room, surrounded by books.

لە ناوەڕاستی ژورەکە دانیشتوە کە دەورە دراوە بە پەرتوک.

She is the only girl among boys,

ئەو تاکە کچە لە نێو کوڕەکان،

and is barely missing her female cousins and friends,

و بیری کچە مامەکان و هاوڕێکانی دەکات،

who are inside the home instead of the school,

کە لە ماڵەوەن لە بری ئەوەی لە قوتابخانە بن،

because they are not allowed to get an education alongside boys.

چونکە ڕێگەیان پێنادرێت لەگەڵ کوڕەکان بخوێنن.

There isn't a single functional girls' school in her village.

هیچ قوتابخانەیەکی تایبەت بە کچان لە گوندەکەیان بوونی نییە.

She was born in a Baloch conservative tribe,

لە بالۆچ لە دایک بووە، کە هۆزێکی پارێزگارە،

where women and girls are a matter of honor.

شوێنێکە کە ئافرەتان و کچان بەشێکن لە شکۆمەندی.

She is the eldest in her family,

ئەو گەورەترینی ناو خێزانەکەیەتی،

and when she was about to be born, her parents wanted a baby boy.

کاتێک خەریک بوو لەدایک ببێت، خێزانەکەی چاوەڕێی مناڵی کوڕیان دەکرد.

But they had bad luck; a baby girl arrived.

بەڵام بەختێکی خراپیان هەبوو، کچیان بوو.

It was customary in her family to keep girls inside the homes.

ئەوە نەریتی ئەوان بوو کە کچەکانیان لە ماڵەکانیان بهێڵنەوە.

But her uncle, who was a university graduate,

بەڵام مامی، کە دەرچووی زانکۆ بوو،

he wanted to give her an opportunity to see the world,

ویستی دەرفەتێکی پێبدات تاوەکو جیهان ببینێت،

to be part of the society.

بۆ ئەوەی ببێتە بەشێک لە کۆمەڵگە.

Luckily, she has a name that can be used for both men and women.

خۆشبەختانە، ناوێکی هەبوو کە دەتوانرا بۆهەردوو ڕەگەز بەکار بێت.

So he saw a chance to change her course of life.

بۆیە هەلێکی هاتە پێش تاوەکو ڕێڕەوی ژیانی بگۆڕێت.

So he decided to raise her as a boy.

بۆیە بڕیاریدا وەکو کوڕێک ئەو بەخێو بکات.

At three months old,

لە تەمەنی ۳ مانگیدا،

she went from being a baby girl, to baby boy.

لە منداڵێکی کچەوە، بوو بە منداڵێکی کوڕ.

She is given a boy's getup.

سیمایەکی کوڕانەی پێدرا.

She is allowed to go outside

ڕێگەی پێدەدرا بچێتە دەرەوە

and get an education alongside boys.

و لەگەڵ کوڕان بخوێنێت.

She is free, she is confident.

ئەو ئازادە، باوەڕی بەخۆی هەیە.

She observes, she notes small, everyday injustices

تێبینی هەموو ئەو ستەم و زۆرداریە دەکات

faced by women and girls in her village.

کەوا لە گوندەکەی ڕووبەڕووی ئافرەت و کچەکان دەبێتەوە.

When newspapers arrive at her home,

کاتێک ڕۆژنامەکان دەگەنە ماڵەکەی،

she watches as it passes from the eldest man to the youngest man.

سەیر دەکات کاتێک لە گەورەترین پیاو بۆ بچوکترینیان تێدەپەڕێت.

By the time women get hold of the paper,

بە پێی کات بۆ ژنان ئاسان بوو کە ئەوڕۆژنامەیان دەست بکەوێت،

it is old news.

ئەوە هەواڵێکی کۆنە.

She completes her eighth-grade year.

پۆلی ۸ی تەواو کرد.

Now fear starts to come in.

ئێستا ترسێکیتر دەستی پێکرد.

This will be the end of her education,

ئەوە دەبێتە کۆتایی خوێندنەکەی،

because the only option for high school for further study

چونکە تاکە بژاردە بۆ خوێندنی ئامادەیی

is five kilometers away.

پێنج کیلۆمەتر دوورە.

Boys have bicycles, they are free.

کوڕەکان پایسکیلیان پێیە، ئازادن.

But she knows

بەڵام ئەو دەزانێت

her father will not allow her to travel on her own,

باوکی ڕێگەی نادات بە تەنها خۆی گەشت بکات،

even if she were posing as a boy.

تەنانەت ئەگەر واخۆشی پیشان بدات کە کوڕە.

"I can't let you do that.

"ناتوانم ڕێگە بدەم ئەوە بکەیت.

And I don't have the time to walk you there and back.

و کاتم نییە تا بتبەمە ئەوێ و بتهێنمەوە.

Sorry, it is impossible."

بمبوورە، ئەوە مەحاڵە."

She gets very upset.

کچەکە زۆر نیگەران بوو.

But a miracle happened.

بەڵام دەرئاسایەک ڕوویدا.

A long-distance relative offers to teach her

خزمێکی دوور مەودایی پێشنیاری فێرکردنی

ninth- and tenth-grade curricula

بابەتەکانی نۆ و دەی بۆ کرد

during summer vacations.

لە کاتی پشووی هاوین.

This is how she completed her matriculation.

بەمشێوەیە ئامادەیی تەواو کرد.

The girl whom I am talking about to you

ئەو کچەی کە بۆتان باس دەکەم

is me, Shameem, who is talking before you now.

منم، شامیم کە ئێستا لە بەردەمتان قسە دەکات.

Throughout centuries, people have been fighting for their identity.

بە درێژای چەند سەدەیەک خەڵکی شەڕیان لە پێناو ناسنامەیان دەکەن.

People have been loved, privileged, because of their identity,

خەڵکی بەهۆی ناسنامەیان خۆشەویست وتایبەت بوون،

their nationality, their ethnicity.

ڕەگەزنامەکانیان، نەژادەکانیان.

Again, people have been hated, denied,

خەڵکی ڕەتدەکرێنەوە و نەفرەتیان لێدەکرێت

because of their nationality, their identity,

بەهۆی ڕەگەزنامە و ناسنامە،

their race, their gender, their religion.

نەژادیان، ڕەگەزیان، و ئاینەکەیانەوە.

Identity determines your position in society, wherever you live.

ناسنامە شوێنت دیاری دەکات لەناو کۆمەڵگەدا، لە هەر کوێیەک بژیت.

So if you ask me, I would say I hate this question of identity.

بۆیە ئەگەر لێم بپرسیت، دەڵێم من ڕقم لە پرسیارکردنی نازنامەیە.

Millions of girls in this world are being denied their basic rights

ملیۆنان کچ لەم جیهانەدا مافە سەرەتایەکانیان ڕەت دەکرێتەوە

because of being female.

بەهۆی ئەوەی مێن.

I would have faced the same, if I hadn't been raised as a boy.

ڕووبەرووی هەمان شت دەبوومەوە ئەگەر وەک کوڕ بەخێو نەکرابام.

I was determined to continue my studies, to learn, to be free.

سوربوم لەسەر تەواوکردنی خوێندنەکەم بۆ ئەوەی فێربم ئازادبم.

After my schooling, even enrolling in college was not easy for me.

دوای قوتابخانە تەنانەت ناونوسکردنیشم ئاسان نەبوولە زانکۆ.

I went on a three-day hunger strike.

سێ ڕۆژ مانم لە خواردن گرت.

(Laughter)

Then, I got permission for college.

دواتر، مۆڵەتی چوونە زانکۆم وەرگرت.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

(Applause)

In that way, I completed my college.

بەم شێوەیە، زانکۆم تەواو کرد.

Two years later, when the time came for me to go to university,

دوای دووساڵ کاتێک کاتی ئەوەهات بچم بۆ زانکۆ،

my father turned his eyes, his attention, to my younger brothers.

باوکم چاو و سەرنجی خستە سەر برا بچووکەکەم.

They need to be in school, secure jobs and support the family.

دەبێت لە قوتابخانە بن بۆ دەستەبەرکردنی دڵنیایی و پاڵپشتی بۆ خێزان.

And as a woman, my place was to be home.

و وەک ئافرەتێک، شوێنی من ماڵەوە بوو.

But, I don't give up.

بەڵام، من کۆڵ نادەم.

I sign up for a two-year program to become a lady health visitor.

خۆم لە بەرنامەیەک ناونووس کرد بۆماوەی دوو ساڵ وەک خانمێکی سەرپەرشتی تەندروستی.

Then I hear about Thardeep Rural Development Program,

دواتر بەرنامەی (سادیپ ڕورەل دیڤیلۆپمێنت)م بیست،

a non-profit organization working to empower rural communities.

دەزگایەکی بێقازانج کاری دەکرد بۆ بەهێز کردنی کۆمەڵگە لادێیەکان.

I sneak away.

خۆم دزیەوە.

I travel five hours to interview for a position.

پێنج کاتژمێر گەشتم کرد بۆ چاوپێکەوتنی کارەکە.

It is the first time I am the farthest from my home I have ever been.

ئەوە یەکەم جارە ئەوەندە دوور بم لە ماڵەوە.

I am closest to my freedom I have ever been.

لە نزیکترین خاڵی ئازادیم دام.

Luckily, I got the job,

خۆشبەختانە، کارەکەم دەست کەوت،

but the hardest part is facing my father.

بەڵام سەخترین بەش ڕووبەڕوبونەوەی باوکم بوو.

(Laughter)

Relatives are already scaring him

خزمەکان ئەویان ترساند بوو

about his daughter wandering off,

سەبارەت بە چوونە دەرەوەی کچەکەی،

teasing him with talk of his daughter crossing the border.

بێزارکردنی بە قسە بەوەی کچەکەی سنووری بەزاندووە.

When I return home,

کاتێک گەڕامەوە ماڵەوە،

I want nothing more than just to accept the position in Thardeep.

هیچیترم نەدەویست جگە لە پەسندکردنم لە (تادیپ).

So that night, I packed all my things in a bag,

بۆیە ئەو شەوە هەموو شتەکانم پێچایەوە لەناو جانتاکەم،

and I walked into my father's room and told him,

و چوومە ژوورەکەی باوکم و پێم گووت

"Tomorrow morning, the bus is going to come in.

"سبەی بەیانی پاسەکە دێت

If you believe in me,

ئەگەر باوەڕم پێدەکەیت،

if you believe in me,

ئەگەر باوەڕم پێدەکەیت،

you will wake me up and take me to the bus station.

ئەواهەڵمدەستێنیت و دەمبەیت بۆوێستگەی پاسەکە.

If you don't, I'll understand."

و ئەگەر باوەڕم پێنەکەیت، ئەوا تێدەگەم."

Then I went to sleep.

دواتر چووم خەوتم.

The next morning, my father was standing beside me

بەیانی دواتر، باوکم لە تەنیشتمەوە وەستابوو

to take me to the bus stop.

تا بمباتە شوێنی وەستانی پاسەکە.

(Applause)

That day, I understood the importance of words.

ئەو ڕۆژە، لە گرنگی ووشەکان تێگەیشتم.

I understood how words affect our hearts,

تێگەیشتم کە چۆن وشەکان کاردەکەنە سەر دڵەکانمان،

how words play an important role in our lives.

چۆن وشەکان ڕۆڵێکی گرنگ دەبینن لە ژیانماندا.

I understood words are more powerful than fighting.

تێگەیشتم ووشەکان زۆر لە شەڕکردن بەهێزترن.

At TRDP, I saw there was a Pakistan which I didn't know,

لە کۆمپانیاکە پاکستانی لێ بوو ئەو شوێنەی کە پێمنەدەزانی،

a country much more complex than I had realized.

ئەو وڵاتەی زۆر لەوە ئاڵۆزترە کە دەمزانی.

Until that, I thought I had a difficult life.

تاوەکو ئەو کات وامدەزانی ژیانێکی قورسم هەبووە.

But here, I saw what women in other parts of Pakistan were experiencing.

بەڵام لێرە، بینیم لە بەشەکانی تری پاکستان ژنان چی دەچێژن.

It really opened my eyes.

ئەوە بەڕاستی چاوەکانمی کردەوە.

Some women had 11 children but nothing to feed them.

هەندێک ژن ١١ مناڵی هەبوو بەڵام هیچ نەبوو بیانداتێ.

For getting water, they would walk three hours every day to wells.

بۆ دەستکەوتنی ئاو هەموو ڕۆژ ۳ کاتژمێر ڕێگەیان دەبڕی بۆ لای بیرەکە.

The nearest hospital was at least 32 kilometers away.

نزیکترین نەخۆشخانە لایەنی کەم ۳۲ کیلۆمەتر دوور بوو.

So if a woman is in labor,

بۆیە ئەگەر ئافرەتێک منداڵی ببێت،

she travels by camel to get to the hospital.

بە حووشتر دەچێت بۆ نەخۆشخانە.

The distance is great; she may die on her way.

مەودای دووریەکەی گەورەیە و لەوانەیە لە ڕێگەدا بمرێت.

So now, this became more than just a job for me.

بۆیە ئێستا ئەوە بۆ من دەبێتە زیاتر لە کارێک.

I discovered my power.

هێزی خۆم دۆزیەوە.

Now, as I was getting salary,

ئێستا، مووچەم وەردەگرت.

I started sending back money to my home.

دەستم کرد بە پارە ناردنەوە بۆ ماڵەوە.

Relatives and neighbors were noticing this.

خزم و دراوسێکان تێبینی ئەوەیان دەکرد.

Now they started to understand the importance of education.

ئێستا لە گرنگی خوێندن تێدەگەن.

By that time, some other parents started sending their daughters to school.

ئەوسا هەنێک لە دایبابەکان دەستیان کرد بە ناردنی کچەکانیان بۆ خوێندنگە.

Slowly, it became easier and acceptable

هێواش هێواش، ئاسانتر و پەسند کراو بوو

for young women to be in college.

بۆ ئافرەتە گەنجەکان تاوەکو لە زانکۆ بن.

Today, there isn't a single girl out of school in my village.

ئەمڕۆهیچ کچێک نییە لە گوندەکەی من نەخوێنێت.

Girls are doing jobs in health sites, even in police.

کچان کارەکانیان دەکەن لە شوێنەتەندروستی و تەنانەت لە پۆلیسیش.

Life was good.

ژیان باش بوو.

But somewhere in my heart,

بەڵام لە شوێنێکی دڵم دا،

I realized that my region, beyond my village

زانیم کەوا ناوچەکەم، لە سەروو گوندەکەم،

needs further change.

پێویستی بە گۆڕانی گەورەترە.

This was also the time when I joined Acumen Fellowship.

ئەوە ئەو کاتە بوو کە چوومە پاڵ کۆمەڵەی(ئاکومێن).

There, I met leaders like me across the country.

لەوێ چاوم بە چەند ڕابەرێکی وەک خۆم کەوت لە سەرانسەری وڵات.

And I saw they are taking risks in their lives.

و بینیم ژیانیان دەخەنە مەترسیەوە.

I started to understand

ئیتر تێگەیشتم

what leadership really means.

کە بەڕاستی ڕابەرایەتی مانایی چییە.

So I decided to go back to my region

بۆیە بڕیارم دا بگەڕێمەوە ناوچەکەی خۆم

and take a position as a teacher in a remote school,

و پلەی مامۆستایەتیم وەرگرت لە خوێندنگەیەکی دوور،

a school that I have to reach by bus --

قوتابخانەیەک کە بە پاس دەچووم

two hours traveling, every morning and evening.

دوو کاتژمێر گەشت کردن هەموو بەیانی و ئێوارەیەک.

Though it was hard, on my first day I knew

هەرچەندە قورسیش بوو، لە یەکەم ڕۆژدا زانیم

I made the right decision.

کەوا بڕیارێکی ڕاستم داوە.

The first day I walked into the school,

یەکەم ڕۆژ چووم بۆ قوتابخانە،

I saw all these little Shameems staring back at me --

هەموو ئەو شامیە بچووکانەم بینی کە لێمیان دەڕوانی

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

with dreams in their eyes,

بەو خەونانەی ناو چاویانەوە

the same dream of freedom which I had in my childhood.

هەمان ئەو خەونەی کە من لە منداڵیدا هەم بوو.

So the girls are eager to learn, but the school is understaffed.

بۆیە کچەکان بەپەرۆش بوون بۆ فێر بوون بەڵام قوتابخانەکە کارمەندی کەم بوو.

Girls sit hopeful,

کچەکان بەهیواوە دانیشتوون،

learn nothing,

هیچ فێر نابن،

and they leave.

و دواتر دەڕۆن.

I can't bear to see this happening.

ناتوانم بەرگە بگرم ببینم ئەوە ڕوودەدات.

There was no turning back.

هیچ گەڕانەوەیەک نەبوو.

I found my purpose.

ئامانجی خۆم دۆزیەوە.

I enlisted a few of my friends to help me to teach.

پشتم بەهەنێک هاوڕێم بەست هەتا یارمەتیم بەدەن بۆ فێرکردن.

I'm introducing my girls to the outside world

من کچەکانم بە دەرەوەی جیهان دەناسێنم

by extracurricular activities and books.

بە چالاکی زیادە و پەرتووک.

I share with them the profiles of the world's best leaders,

ژیانی تایبەتی باشترین سەرکردەکانم لەگەڵ بەشداری پێکردن،

like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

وەکو مارتن لوتەر کینگ، و نێڵسن ماندێلا.

Last year, a few of our students went to college.

ساڵی پارهەندێک لە قوتابیەکانم چوون بۆ زانکۆ.

For me, I never stop studying.

وەک خۆم، هەرگیز ناوەستم لە خوێندن.

Today, I'm working to complete my PhD in education --

ئەمڕۆ کار لەسەرتەواوکردنی دکتۆراکەم دەکەم

(Applause)

which will allow me to gain a management position

کە دەرفەتم پێدەدات تاکو پلەی بەڕێوەبەرێتی بەدەستبێنم

in the school system,

لە سیستەمی قوتابخانەدا

and I will be able to make more decisions

و دەتوانم بڕیاری زیاتر بدەم

and play a pivotal role in the system.

و ڕۆڵی تەوەرەی بگێڕم لەو سیستەمەدا.

I believe that without educating the girls,

بڕوام وایە کە بە بێ فێرکردنی کچەکان

we may not make world peace.

ناتوانین ئاشتی لە جیهاندا بەرقەرار بکەین.

We may not reduce child marriage.

ناتوانین بەشوودانی منداڵ کەم بکەینەوە.

We may not reduce infant mortality rate.

ناتوانین تێکڕای مردنی منداڵی بچووک کەم بکەینەوە.

We may not reduce maternal mortality rate.

ناتوانین تێکڕای مردنی دایکان کەم بکەینەوە.

For this, we have to continuously

بۆ ئەوە، پێویستیمان بە بەردەوامی هەیە

and collectively work together.

و کاری هەماهەنگی بەیەکەوە.

At least I am playing my role,

لانی کەم من ڕۆڵی خۆم دەگێڕم،

though the destination is not close.

سەرەڕای ئەوەی ئامانج نزیک نییە.

The road is not easy.

ڕێگەکە ئاسان نییە.

But I have dreams in my eyes,

بەڵام خەون لە ناو چاوەکانم دا هەیە

and I am not going to look back now.

و من ئێستا سەیری دواوە ناکەم.
