A room full of boys.

A girl child, hardly nine or ten years old,

लड़कों से भरी एक कक्षा,

she is sitting in the center of the room, surrounded by books.

एक लड़की, आयु मुश्किल से नौ या दस वर्ष,

कमरे के बीचों बीच, किताबों से घिरी वह बैठी है.

She is the only girl among boys,

and is barely missing her female cousins and friends,

सब लड़कों के बीच, वह इकलौती लड़की है,

और वह अपनी रिश्ते की बहनों और सखियों की याद नहीं कर रही,

who are inside the home instead of the school,

जो विद्यालय की बजाय अपने घरों में बैठी हैं,

because they are not allowed to get an education alongside boys.

क्योंकि उन्हें लड़कों के साथ बैठ कर पढने की आज्ञा नहीं है.

There isn't a single functional girls' school in her village.

गाँव में लड़कियों के लिए एक भी चलता हुआ विद्यालय नहीं है.

She was born in a Baloch conservative tribe,

where women and girls are a matter of honor.

उसका जन्म एक रूढ़ीवादी बलोच आदिवासी समाज में हुआ था,

जहां लड़कियाँ और स्त्रियाँ आन अर्थात इज्ज़त की वस्तु हैं.

She is the eldest in her family,

and when she was about to be born, her parents wanted a baby boy.

वह परिवार में सबसे बड़ी है,

और जब वह पैदा होने वाली थी, उसके माता पिता को बेटा चाहिए था.

But they had bad luck; a baby girl arrived.

पर उनकी किस्मत ख़राब थी; एक लड़की पैदा हुई.

It was customary in her family to keep girls inside the homes.

उसके परिवार की रीत के अनुसार लड़कियों को घर में रखा जाता था.

But her uncle, who was a university graduate,

he wanted to give her an opportunity to see the world,

पर उसका चाचा, जो यूनिवर्सिटी से स्नातक था,

चाहता था कि उसे दुनिया देखने का मौका मिले,

to be part of the society.

Luckily, she has a name that can be used for both men and women.

वह समाज का हिस्सा बने.

किस्मत से उसका नाम ऐसा था जो स्त्री पुरुषों में समान था.

So he saw a chance to change her course of life.

तो उन्हें एक मौका नज़र आया जो उस लड़की का जीवन बदल सकता था.

So he decided to raise her as a boy.

At three months old,

तो उसने तय किया उसे एक लड़के की तरह बड़ा किया जाए.

she went from being a baby girl, to baby boy.

She is given a boy's getup.

She is allowed to go outside

and get an education alongside boys.

She is free, she is confident.

She observes, she notes small, everyday injustices

वह स्वतंत्र है, विश्वास से भरी है.

वह रोज होने वाले अन्याय देखती

faced by women and girls in her village.

जो उसके गाँव की लड़कियाँ और स्त्रयाँं झेलती थीं.

When newspapers arrive at her home,

she watches as it passes from the eldest man to the youngest man.

जब उसके घर में अखबार आता था, वह देखती थी

कि अखबार घर के सबसे बड़े पुरुष के हाथों से होते हुए सबसे छोटे पुरुष तक पहुँचता था.

By the time women get hold of the paper,

जब तक अखबार स्त्रियों तक पहुँचता था,

it is old news.

She completes her eighth-grade year.

खबर पुरानी हो चुकी होती थी.

Now fear starts to come in.

उसकी आठवीं कक्षा की पढ़ाई पूरी हो जाती है.

This will be the end of her education,

अब डर पैदा होने लगता है.

because the only option for high school for further study

यह उसकी शिक्षा का अंत होगा,

क्योंकि आगे की पढ़ाई के लिए इकलौता विकल्प, हाई स्कूल है,

is five kilometers away.

Boys have bicycles, they are free.

जो पाँच किलोमीटर दूर है.

But she knows

her father will not allow her to travel on her own,

even if she were posing as a boy.

"I can't let you do that.

And I don't have the time to walk you there and back.

She gets very upset.

But a miracle happened.

A long-distance relative offers to teach her

पर एक चमत्कार होता है.

ninth- and tenth-grade curricula

during summer vacations.

This is how she completed her matriculation.

गर्मी की छुट्टियों में पढ़ाने की पेशकश करता है.

The girl whom I am talking about to you

is me, Shameem, who is talking before you now.

वह लड़की, जिसके बारे में मैं आपको बता रही हूँ,

Throughout centuries, people have been fighting for their identity.

People have been loved, privileged, because of their identity,

राष्ट्रीयता, नस्ल और पहचान के कारण उन्हें प्रेम और विशेषाधिकार मिलते रहे हैं.

their nationality, their ethnicity.

Again, people have been hated, denied,

because of their nationality, their identity,

और फिर पुनः लोग नकारे गए हैं और घृणा के पात्र रहे हैं,

their race, their gender, their religion.

केवल उनकी राष्ट्रीयता, पहचान, नस्ल, लिंग तथा धर्म के कारण ही.

Identity determines your position in society, wherever you live.

आप कहीं भी रहें, समाज में आपकी स्थिति आपकी पहचान के कारण तय होती है.

So if you ask me, I would say I hate this question of identity.

तो यदि आप मुझसे पूछें, तो मैं कहूँगी कि मुझे पहचान के इस प्रश्न से नफरत है.

Millions of girls in this world are being denied their basic rights

इस विश्व में लाखों लड़कियों को उनके मूल अधिकारों से वंचित रखा जाता है

because of being female.

I would have faced the same, if I hadn't been raised as a boy.

केवल स्त्री होने के कारण.

मुझे भी यह सब भुगतना पड़ता यदि मेरा पालन एक लड़के की तरह न किया गया होता.

I was determined to continue my studies, to learn, to be free.

मैं दृढ-निश्चयी थी अपनी शिक्षा, पढ़ाई तथा स्वतंत्रता के बारे में.

After my schooling, even enrolling in college was not easy for me.

विद्यालय के बाद कॉलेज में दाखिला लेना भी मेरे लिए सरल न था.

I went on a three-day hunger strike.

(Laughter)

मुझे तीन दिन भूख हड़ताल करनी पड़ी.

Then, I got permission for college.

(हँसी)

(Laughter)

तब मुझे कॉलेज जाने की अनुमति मिली.

(Applause)

In that way, I completed my college.

(हँसी)

इस प्रकार मेरी कॉलेज शिक्षा पूरी हुई.

Two years later, when the time came for me to go to university,

दो वर्ष बाद, जब विश्वविद्यालय जाने की बारी आई,

my father turned his eyes, his attention, to my younger brothers.

मेरे पिता का ध्यान मेरे छोटे भाइयों की ओर चला गया.

They need to be in school, secure jobs and support the family.

उन्हें विद्यालय जाना था, नौकरियाँ ले कर परिवार चलाना था.

And as a woman, my place was to be home.

और एक स्त्री होने के कारण, मेरा स्थान घर में था.

But, I don't give up.

I sign up for a two-year program to become a lady health visitor.

पर, मैंने हार नहीं मानी.

मैंने महिला स्वास्थ्य सेविका बनने के लिए दो वर्षीय कार्यक्रम में दाखिला लिया.

Then I hear about Thardeep Rural Development Program,

फिर मैंने थरदीप ग्रामीण विकास कार्यक्रम के बारे में सुना,

a non-profit organization working to empower rural communities.

एक एन.जी.ओ., जो ग्रामीण समाज के उत्थान के लिए काम कर रहा था.

I sneak away.

I travel five hours to interview for a position.

मैं निकल पड़ी.

वहाँ एक पद के साक्षात्कार के लिए मैंने पाँच घंटे की यात्रा की.

It is the first time I am the farthest from my home I have ever been.

अब तक मैं अपने घर से इतनी दूर नहीं गई थी.

I am closest to my freedom I have ever been.

मैं स्वतंत्रता के इतने पास पहले कभी नहीं पहुँची थी.

Luckily, I got the job,

but the hardest part is facing my father.

सौभाग्य से मुझे वह नौकरी मिल गयी,

पर सबसे कठिन समस्या थी पिता के सम्मुख जाना.

(Laughter)

Relatives are already scaring him

(हँसी)

about his daughter wandering off,

रिश्तेदारों उन्हें पहले ही डरा रहे थे

teasing him with talk of his daughter crossing the border.

कि उनकी बेटी भटक गई है,

और बेटी द्वारा सीमा रेखा पार करने की बातों से उनका मज़ाक उड़ा रहे थे.

When I return home,

I want nothing more than just to accept the position in Thardeep.

जब मैं घर पहुँची,

मैंने कहा कि मुझे केवल थरदीप की नौकरी पकड़नी है, और कुछ नहीं चाहती.

So that night, I packed all my things in a bag,

तो उस रात, मैंने अपना सामान थैले में डाला,

and I walked into my father's room and told him,

"Tomorrow morning, the bus is going to come in.

If you believe in me,

“कल सुबह बस आने वाली है.

if you believe in me,

you will wake me up and take me to the bus station.

आप मुझे जगा कर बस अड्डे पर ले जाएंगे.

If you don't, I'll understand."

Then I went to sleep.

अगर आप ऐसा नहीं करते, तो मैं समझ जाऊँगी.”

The next morning, my father was standing beside me

फिर मैं सोने चली गई.

अगली सुबह पिताजी मेरी बगल में खड़े थे

to take me to the bus stop.

(Applause)

बस अड्डे पर ले जाने के लिए.

That day, I understood the importance of words.

उस दिन मुझे शब्दों के महत्त्व का पता लगा.

I understood how words affect our hearts,

मैंने जाना कि शब्द हमारे दिलों पर किस प्रकार असर करते हैं,

how words play an important role in our lives.

कि किस प्रकार शब्द हमारे जीवन में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा करते हैं.

I understood words are more powerful than fighting.

मैंने जाना कि शब्द लड़ाई से कहीं अधिक शक्तिशाली होते हैं.

At TRDP, I saw there was a Pakistan which I didn't know,

TRDP में मैंने देखा कि एक ऐसा पाकिस्तान है जिसे मैं नहीं जानती थी,

a country much more complex than I had realized.

एक देश जो मेरे विचार से कहीं अधिक जटिल था.

Until that, I thought I had a difficult life.

But here, I saw what women in other parts of Pakistan were experiencing.

तब तक, मैं सोचती थी कि मेरा ही जीवन कठिन था.

पर यहाँ मैंने देखा कि पाकिस्तान के अन्य भागों में महिलाओं पर क्या बीत रही थी.

It really opened my eyes.

Some women had 11 children but nothing to feed them.

इससे मेरी आँखें खुलीं.

कुछ महिलाओं के 11 बच्चे थे पर उन्हें खिलाने के लिए कुछ न था.

For getting water, they would walk three hours every day to wells.

रोज उन्हें तीन घंटे चल कर कूओं से पानी लाना पड़ता था.

The nearest hospital was at least 32 kilometers away.

सबसे पास का हस्पताल कम से कम 32 किलोमीटर दूर था.

So if a woman is in labor,

she travels by camel to get to the hospital.

तो यदि किसी स्त्री को प्रसव पीड़ा हो रही हो,

तो उसे ऊँट पर बैठ कर हस्पताल जाना होता था.

The distance is great; she may die on her way.

दूरी बहुत अधिक है; वह रास्ते में ही मर सकती है.

So now, this became more than just a job for me.

तो अब, यह मेरे किए नौकरी से कहीं बड़ा काम बन गया.

I discovered my power.

Now, as I was getting salary,

मैंने अपनी शक्ति को पहचाना.

I started sending back money to my home.

अब, क्योंकि मुझे वेतन मिल रहा था,

Relatives and neighbors were noticing this.

मैं अपने घर पैसे भेजने लगी.

Now they started to understand the importance of education.

रिश्तेदार और पड़ोसी यह देख पा रहे थे.

अब उन्हें शिक्षा का महत्त्व पता चलने लगा.

By that time, some other parents started sending their daughters to school.

तब तक, कुछ और माता पिता भी अपनी बेटियों को विद्यालय भेजने लगे.

Slowly, it became easier and acceptable

धीरे-धीरे युवा स्त्रियों का कॉलेज जाना आसान और मान्य होने लगा.

for young women to be in college.

Today, there isn't a single girl out of school in my village.

आज, मेरे गाँव की कोई लड़की ऐसी नहीं है जो विद्यालय न जाती हो.

Girls are doing jobs in health sites, even in police.

लड़कियाँ काम कर रही हैं स्वास्थ्य क्षेत्रों में और पुलिस में भी.

Life was good.

But somewhere in my heart,

I realized that my region, beyond my village

जीवन बढ़िया चल रहा था.

पर मेरे दिल के किसी कोने में,

यह विचार आया कि मेरे गाँव के परे मेरे इलाके को

needs further change.

This was also the time when I joined Acumen Fellowship.

परिवर्तन की और अधिक आवश्यकता है.

यह समय था, जब मैं एक्युमन फेलोशिप से जुड़ी

There, I met leaders like me across the country.

वहाँ मैं देश भर की अपने जैसी मार्गदर्शक महिलाओं से मिली.

And I saw they are taking risks in their lives.

और मैंने पाया कि वे अपने जीवन में खतरे उठा रही हैं.

I started to understand

मुझे समझ आने लगा कि

what leadership really means.

नेतृत्व का वास्तविक अर्थ क्या होता है.

So I decided to go back to my region

and take a position as a teacher in a remote school,

तो मैंने अपने इलाके में वापस जाने का निर्णय लिया

और मैंने दूर दराज के एक विद्यालय में पढ़ाना शुरू किया,

a school that I have to reach by bus --

एक विद्यालय, जहां मुझे बस से जाना होता था-

two hours traveling, every morning and evening.

Though it was hard, on my first day I knew

चाहे यह कठिन था, पर पहले दिन ही मुझे पता लग गया था कि

I made the right decision.

The first day I walked into the school,

मैंने सही निर्णय लिया है.

I saw all these little Shameems staring back at me --

पहले दिन जब मैं विद्यालय में पहुँची,

मैंने इन सब छोटी शमीमों को अपनी और देखते हुए पाया -

(Laughter)

with dreams in their eyes,

the same dream of freedom which I had in my childhood.

(हँसी)

उनकी आँखों में सपने थे,

स्वतंत्रता के वे ही सपने, जो मैंने अपने बचपन में देखे थे.

So the girls are eager to learn, but the school is understaffed.

तो ये बच्चियाँ पढ़ना चाहती थीं, पर विद्यालय में शिक्षक कम थे.

Girls sit hopeful,

learn nothing,

लड़कियाँ आशा ले कर बैठतीं,

and they leave.

I can't bear to see this happening.

सीखना कुछ न होता,

There was no turning back.

और वे चली जातीं.

पर मैं ऐसा होता देख न सकती थी.

I found my purpose.

पीछे मुड़ने का कोई अर्थ न था.

I enlisted a few of my friends to help me to teach.

मुझे मेरा लक्ष्य मिल गया था.

इन्हें पढ़ाने के लिए मैंने अपनी मित्रों से संपर्क किया.

I'm introducing my girls to the outside world

मैं इन लड़कियों को बाहरी विश्व से परिचित करा रही हूँ

by extracurricular activities and books.

I share with them the profiles of the world's best leaders,

शिक्षण से अतिरिक्त गतिविधियों और पुस्तकों की सहायता से.

मैं विश्व के सर्वोत्तम नेताओं के बारे में उन्हें बताती हूँ,

like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

जैसे मार्टिन लूथर किंग और नेल्सन मंडेला.

Last year, a few of our students went to college.

पिछले वर्ष, हमारी कुछ छात्राओं ने कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया.

For me, I never stop studying.

Today, I'm working to complete my PhD in education --

मेरे लिए, पढ़ाई कभी नहीं रुकेगी.

आज, मैं शिक्षा क्षेत्र में अपनी पीएचडी पूरी करने के लिए काम कर रही हूँ -

which will allow me to gain a management position

(तालियाँ)

जिससे मुझे विद्यालय प्रबंधन में स्थान मिलने में सहायता मिलेगी,

in the school system,

and I will be able to make more decisions

and play a pivotal role in the system.

ताकि मैं और बड़े निर्णय ले पाऊँगी

और व्यवस्था में एक निर्णायक भूमिका निभा पाऊँगी.

I believe that without educating the girls,

मेरा विश्वास है कि लड़कियों को पढ़ाए बिना

we may not make world peace.

We may not reduce child marriage.

हम विश्व में शांति नहीं ला पाएँगे.

We may not reduce infant mortality rate.

हम बाल विवाह कम नहीं कर पाएँगे.

हम शिशु मृत्यु डर कम नहीं कर पाएँगे.

We may not reduce maternal mortality rate.

हम मातृ मृत्यु दर कम न कर पाएँगे.

For this, we have to continuously

इस सबके लिए हमें सतत

and collectively work together.

और मिल कर कार्य करना होगा.

At least I am playing my role,

though the destination is not close.

कम से कम, मैं अपनी भूमिका निभा रही हूँ,

चाहे लक्ष्य पास नहीं है.

The road is not easy.

But I have dreams in my eyes,

मार्ग आसान नहीं है.

and I am not going to look back now.

पर मेरी आँखों में सपना है,

और मैं पीछे मुड़ने वाली नहीं हूँ.
