वर्गात सगळे मुलगे.

A girl child, hardly nine or ten years old,

जेमतेम नऊ दहा वर्षांची एक मुलगी

she is sitting in the center of the room, surrounded by books.

वर्गात मध्यभागी बसली आहे. तिच्या भोवती पुस्तकं आहेत.

She is the only girl among boys,

त्या सर्व मुलांच्यात ती एकटीच मुलगी आहे.

and is barely missing her female cousins and friends,

तिला तिच्या बहिणींची, मैत्रिणींची फार आठवण येते आहे.

who are inside the home instead of the school,

त्या शाळेत येण्याऐवजी घरीच राहिल्या आहेत.

because they are not allowed to get an education alongside boys.

कारण त्यांना मुलांबरोबर शिकायची परवानगी नाही.

There isn't a single functional girls' school in her village.

तिच्या गावात मुलींची एकही शाळा नाही.

She was born in a Baloch conservative tribe,

तिचा जन्म बलोच या पुराणमतवादी जमातीत झाला.

where women and girls are a matter of honor.

इथे स्त्रिया आणि मुली म्हणजे फक्त घराण्याची अब्रू.

She is the eldest in her family,

घरातली ती सर्वात मोठी मुलगी.

and when she was about to be born, her parents wanted a baby boy.

तिच्या जन्माच्या वेळी, तिच्या आईवडिलांना मुलगा हवा होता.

But they had bad luck; a baby girl arrived.

पण दुर्दैवाने मुलगी झाली.

It was customary in her family to keep girls inside the homes.

तिच्या कुटुंबात मुलींना घराच्या आतच ठेवण्याची पद्धत होती.

But her uncle, who was a university graduate,

पण तिचे काका विद्यापीठाचे पदवीधर होते.

he wanted to give her an opportunity to see the world,

to be part of the society.

Luckily, she has a name that can be used for both men and women.

So he saw a chance to change her course of life.

So he decided to raise her as a boy.

At three months old,

वयाच्या तिसऱ्या महिन्यात

she went from being a baby girl, to baby boy.

त्या छोट्या मुलीचं रूपांतर एका छोट्या मुलात झालं.

She is given a boy's getup.

तिला मुलाचा वेष देण्यात आला.

She is allowed to go outside

तिला बाहेर जाण्याची परवानगी मिळाली.

and get an education alongside boys.

मुलांबरोबर शिकण्याचीही.

She is free, she is confident.

ती मुक्त झाली, तिचा आत्मविश्वास वाढला.

She observes, she notes small, everyday injustices

ती निरीक्षण करू लागली.

faced by women and girls in her village.

गावातल्या स्त्रिया आणि मुलींवर होणारे छोटे छोटे अन्याय ती पाहू लागली.

When newspapers arrive at her home,

तिने पाहिलं, की घरी येणारी वर्तमानपत्रं

she watches as it passes from the eldest man to the youngest man.

सर्वात वयस्कर पुरुषाकडून सर्वात छोट्या पुरुषाकडे जातात.

By the time women get hold of the paper,

ती घरातल्या स्त्रियांच्या हातात पडेपर्यंत

it is old news.

बातम्या शिळ्या झालेल्या असतात.

She completes her eighth-grade year.

तिचं आठवीचं वर्ष संपलं.

Now fear starts to come in.

तिला भीती वाटू लागली, की

This will be the end of her education,

आता आपलं शिक्षण संपणार.

because the only option for high school for further study

कारण पुढची एकमेव माध्यमिक शाळा

is five kilometers away.

पाच किलोमीटर अंतरावर होती.

Boys have bicycles, they are free.

मुलगे सायकली चालवत. ते स्वतंत्र होते.

But she knows

पण तिला ठाऊक होतं,

her father will not allow her to travel on her own,

वडील आपल्याला एकटीला जाऊ देणार नाहीत.

even if she were posing as a boy.

मुलाचा वेष घातला, तरीही.

"I can't let you do that.

And I don't have the time to walk you there and back.

She gets very upset.

But a miracle happened.

A long-distance relative offers to teach her

ninth- and tenth-grade curricula

This is how she completed her matriculation.

The girl whom I am talking about to you

is me, Shameem, who is talking before you now.

ती मुलगी म्हणजे मी, शमीम, जी आत्ता इथे तुमच्यासमोर बोलते आहे.

Throughout centuries, people have been fighting for their identity.

स्वतःची ओळख पटवण्यासाठी माणसं कित्येक शतकं झगडताहेत.

People have been loved, privileged, because of their identity,

या ओळखीमुळेच माणसाला प्रेम मिळतं, फायदे मिळतात.

their nationality, their ethnicity.

राष्ट्रीयत्व मिळतं, वंश सांगता येतो.

Again, people have been hated, denied,

तसंच, तिरस्कार, नाकारलं जाणं

because of their nationality, their identity,

हेही घडू शकतं, त्यांच्या राष्ट्रीयत्वामुळे, ओळखीमुळे,

their race, their gender, their religion.

वंशामुळे, लिंगामुळे, धर्मामुळे.

Identity determines your position in society, wherever you live.

ओळखीमुळे तुमचं समाजातलं स्थान ठरतं. तुम्ही कुठेही राहत असलात, तरीही.

So if you ask me, I would say I hate this question of identity.

मला विचाराल, तर मी म्हणेन, हा ओळखीचा प्रश्न मला अजिबात आवडत नाही.

Millions of girls in this world are being denied their basic rights

जगात लक्षावधी मुलींना मूलभूत हक्क नाकारले जातात,

because of being female.

I would have faced the same, if I hadn't been raised as a boy.

I was determined to continue my studies, to learn, to be free.

After my schooling, even enrolling in college was not easy for me.

शाळा संपल्यावर महाविद्यालयात प्रवेश घेणंही माझ्यासाठी सोपं नव्हतं.

I went on a three-day hunger strike.

मी तीन दिवसांचं उपोषण केलं.

Then, I got permission for college.

मग मला महाविद्यालयात जाण्याची परवानगी मिळाली.

(Laughter)

In that way, I completed my college.

अशा रीतीने माझं महाविद्यालयीन शिक्षण पूर्ण झालं.

Two years later, when the time came for me to go to university,

दोन वर्षांनी जेव्हा विद्यापीठात जाण्याची वेळ आली, तेव्हा

my father turned his eyes, his attention, to my younger brothers.

माझ्या वडिलांनी आपलं लक्ष माझ्या धाकट्या भावांकडे वळवलं.

They need to be in school, secure jobs and support the family.

त्यांनी शिक्षण घ्यावं, नोकऱ्या कराव्यात, कुटुंबाला आधार द्यावा.

And as a woman, my place was to be home.

आणि एक स्त्री म्हणून, मी घरी राहावं.

But, I don't give up.

पण मी प्रयत्न सोडले नाहीत.

I sign up for a two-year program to become a lady health visitor.

फिरत्या आरोग्य सेविकेच्या दोन वर्षांच्या अभ्यासक्रमात मी नाव नोंदवलं.

Then I hear about Thardeep Rural Development Program,

a non-profit organization working to empower rural communities.

I sneak away.

I travel five hours to interview for a position.

It is the first time I am the farthest from my home I have ever been.

घरापासून इतकं दूर येण्याची माझी ही पहिलीच वेळ.

I am closest to my freedom I have ever been.

स्वातंत्र्याच्या इतकी जवळ मी यापूर्वी कधीच आले नव्हते.

Luckily, I got the job,

सुदैवाने मला ती नोकरी मिळाली.

but the hardest part is facing my father.

पण वडिलांचा सामना करणं हे त्याहून कठीण होतं.

Relatives are already scaring him

नातेवाईक त्यांना भेडसावू लागले होते.

about his daughter wandering off,

तुमची मुलगी भरकटते आहे,

teasing him with talk of his daughter crossing the border.

तिने मर्यादा ओलांडली आहे, असं म्हणून चिडवू लागले होते.

When I return home,

घरी परतताना,

I want nothing more than just to accept the position in Thardeep.

थरदीपची नोकरी करता यावी, इतकीच इच्छा होती.

So that night, I packed all my things in a bag,

म्ह्णून मग त्या रात्री मी माझं सगळं सामान एका बॅगेत भरलं,

and I walked into my father's room and told him,

आणि माझ्या वडिलांच्या खोलीत जाऊन त्यांना सांगितलं,

"Tomorrow morning, the bus is going to come in.

"उद्या सकाळी बस येणार आहे.

If you believe in me,

तुमचा माझ्यावर विश्वास असेल,

if you believe in me,

तुमचा माझ्यावर विश्वास असेल,

you will wake me up and take me to the bus station.

तर तुम्ही मला सकाळी उठवा, आणि बस स्टेशनवर घेऊन चला.

If you don't, I'll understand."

नाही तर मी समजून घेईन."

Then I went to sleep.

मग मी झोपी गेले.

The next morning, my father was standing beside me

दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी वडील माझ्या शेजारी उभे होते,

to take me to the bus stop.

मला बसस्टॉपवर नेण्यासाठी.

That day, I understood the importance of words.

त्या दिवशी मला शब्दांचं महत्त्व कळलं.

I understood how words affect our hearts,

शब्द आपल्या हृदयावर कसा परिणाम करतात, ते कळलं.

how words play an important role in our lives.

शब्द आपल्या आयुष्यात किती मोठी भूमिका बजावतात, ते कळलं.

I understood words are more powerful than fighting.

भांडणापेक्षा शब्दांची ताकद मोठी असते, हे कळलं.

At TRDP, I saw there was a Pakistan which I didn't know,

TRDP मध्ये दिसलेला पाकिस्तान मला अनोळखी होता.

a country much more complex than I had realized.

माझ्या समजुतीपेक्षा फार गुंतागुंतीचा होता.

Until that, I thought I had a difficult life.

तोपर्यंत मी माझं आयुष्य कठीण समजत होते.

But here, I saw what women in other parts of Pakistan were experiencing.

पण पाकिस्तानातल्या इतर भागातल्या स्त्रियांचे अनुभव पाहून

It really opened my eyes.

खरोखर माझे डोळे उघडले.

Some women had 11 children but nothing to feed them.

काही स्त्रियांना अकरा मुलं होती. पण त्या मुलांसाठी अन्न नव्हतं.

For getting water, they would walk three hours every day to wells.

रोज तीन तास चालून त्या पाण्यासाठी विहिरीवर जात.

The nearest hospital was at least 32 kilometers away.

जवळचं रुग्णालय ३२ किलोमीटर अंतरावर होतं.

So if a woman is in labor,

प्रसूतीवेदना होत असणारी स्त्री

she travels by camel to get to the hospital.

उंटावरून प्रवास करून रुग्णालयात जाई.

The distance is great; she may die on her way.

अंतर फार असल्यामुळे वाटेत तिचा मृत्यू होणंही शक्य होतं.

So now, this became more than just a job for me.

आता हे मला नोकरीपेक्षा मोठं वाटू लागलं.

I discovered my power.

मला माझ्यातली ताकद समजली.

Now, as I was getting salary,

मला पगार मिळत असल्यामुळे

I started sending back money to my home.

मी घरी पैसे पाठवू लागले.

Relatives and neighbors were noticing this.

नातेवाईक, शेजारी यांच्या हे लक्षात येऊ लागलं.

Now they started to understand the importance of education.

आता त्यांना शिक्षणाचं महत्त्व कळू लागलं.

By that time, some other parents started sending their daughters to school.

आणखी काही पालक आपल्या मुलींना शाळेत पाठवू लागले.

Slowly, it became easier and acceptable

हळूहळू याला सहज मान्यता मिळून

for young women to be in college.

मुली महाविद्यालयात जाऊ लागल्या.

Today, there isn't a single girl out of school in my village.

आज शाळेत न जाणारी एकही मुलगी माझ्या गावात नाही.

Girls are doing jobs in health sites, even in police.

मुली आरोग्य केंद्रात आणि पोलिस खात्यातही नोकऱ्या करताहेत.

Life was good.

आयुष्य चांगलंच होतं.

But somewhere in my heart,

पण मनात कुठेतरी मला जाणवलं, की

I realized that my region, beyond my village

आपल्या गावापलिकडच्या प्रदेशात

needs further change.

आणखी बदल व्हायला हवेत.

This was also the time when I joined Acumen Fellowship.

याच सुमाराला मी ऍक्युमेन फेलोशिप मध्ये दाखल झाले.

There, I met leaders like me across the country.

तिथे मला देशातले माझ्यासारखे आणखी कार्यकर्ते भेटले.

And I saw they are taking risks in their lives.

ते किती धोके पत्करत होते, हे मी पाहिलं.

I started to understand

मला समजू लागलं,

what leadership really means.

नेतृत्व म्हणजे खरोखर काय असतं.

So I decided to go back to my region

मी निर्णय घेतला, माझ्या प्रदेशात परत जाऊन

and take a position as a teacher in a remote school,

एका दुर्गम भागातल्या शाळेत शिक्षिका होण्याचा.

a school that I have to reach by bus --

या शाळेत बसने जायला

two hours traveling, every morning and evening.

मला रोज सकाळ संध्याकाळ दोन तास प्रवास करावा लागे.

Though it was hard, on my first day I knew

ते कठीण होतं. पण पहिल्याच दिवशी मला जाणवलं, की

I made the right decision.

आपण योग्य निर्णय घेतला आहे.

The first day I walked into the school,

पहिल्या दिवशी शाळेत पोहोचले तेव्हा

I saw all these little Shameems staring back at me --

तिथल्या सगळ्या छोट्या शमीम माझ्याकडे रोखून बघत होत्या.

(Laughter)

with dreams in their eyes,

त्यांच्या नजरेत स्वप्नं होती.

the same dream of freedom which I had in my childhood.

बालपणीच्या माझ्या स्वातंत्र्याच्या स्वप्नासारखीच.

So the girls are eager to learn, but the school is understaffed.

मुली शिकायला उत्सुक होत्या. पण शाळेत पुरेसे कर्मचारी नव्हते.

Girls sit hopeful,

मुली आशेने बसत.

learn nothing,

पण शिक्षण मिळत नसे.

and they leave.

मग त्या घरी निघून जात.

I can't bear to see this happening.

हे मला सहन होत नव्हतं.

There was no turning back.

मी आता मागे फिरणार नव्हते.

I found my purpose.

मला माझं ध्येय सापडलं होतं.

I enlisted a few of my friends to help me to teach.

मी माझ्या काही मैत्रिणींना शिकवायला मदतीला बोलावलं.

I'm introducing my girls to the outside world

मी माझ्या मुलींना बाहेरच्या जगाची ओळख करून देते.

by extracurricular activities and books.

अभ्यासाव्यतिरिक्त उपक्रम आणि पुस्तकांद्वारे.

I share with them the profiles of the world's best leaders,

मी त्यांना जगातल्या थोर नेत्यांची चरित्रं सांगते.

like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

मार्टिन ल्युथर किंग, नेल्सन मंडेला वगैरे.

Last year, a few of our students went to college.

गेल्या वर्षी माझ्या काही विद्यार्थिनी महाविद्यालयात गेल्या.

For me, I never stop studying.

माझं स्वतःचं शिक्षण थांबलेलं नाही.

Today, I'm working to complete my PhD in education --

आज मी शिक्षणशास्त्रात पी. एच. डी. करत आहे.

which will allow me to gain a management position

यामुळे मला व्यवस्थापकीय पदावर काम करता येईल.

in the school system,

शिक्षण खात्यात.

and I will be able to make more decisions

मी जास्त निर्णय घेऊ शकेन.

and play a pivotal role in the system.

महत्त्वाची कामगिरी करू शकेन.

I believe that without educating the girls,

मला वाटतं, मुलींना शिक्षण दिल्याशिवाय

we may not make world peace.

आपण जगात शांतता आणू शकणार नाही.

We may not reduce child marriage.

बालविवाह कमी करू शकणार नाही.

We may not reduce infant mortality rate.

अर्भक मृत्युदर कमी करू शकणार नाही.

We may not reduce maternal mortality rate.

मातांचा मृत्युदर कमी करू शकणार नाही.

For this, we have to continuously

यासाठी आपल्याला सतत

and collectively work together.

आणि एकत्रितपणे काम करावं लागेल.

At least I am playing my role,

निदान मी माझा वाटा उचलते आहे.

though the destination is not close.

अंतिम ध्येय जवळ नसलं, तरीसुद्धा.

The road is not easy.

मार्ग सोपा नाही.

But I have dreams in my eyes,

पण माझ्या नजरेत स्वप्नं आहेत,

and I am not going to look back now.

आणि आता मी मागे वळून पाहणार नाही.
