남자 아이들로 가득한 방

A girl child, hardly nine or ten years old,

겨우 9살이나 10살 쯤 되어보이는 여자아이

she is sitting in the center of the room, surrounded by books.

이 아이는 책에 둘러싸인 채 방 한가운데에 앉아 있습니다.

She is the only girl among boys,

남자아이들 속 유일한 여자아이인데요.

and is barely missing her female cousins and friends,

학교 대신 집에 있는 여자 친척이나

who are inside the home instead of the school,

친구들을 딱히 그리워 하지 않습니다.

because they are not allowed to get an education alongside boys.

왜냐하면 그 아이들은 남자들과 함께 교육받을 수 없거든요.

There isn't a single functional girls' school in her village.

아이가 살던 마을에는 여학생을 위한 학교가 한 군데도 없었어요.

She was born in a Baloch conservative tribe,

이 아이는 여성을 명예의 관점에서 다루는

where women and girls are a matter of honor.

보수적인 발로흐 부족에서 태어났습니다.

She is the eldest in her family,

이 아이는 장녀입니다.

and when she was about to be born, her parents wanted a baby boy.

사실 아이의 부모님은 남자 아이가 태어나기를 바랐죠.

But they had bad luck; a baby girl arrived.

하지만 운이 따르지 않았고 여자아이가 태어났습니다.

It was customary in her family to keep girls inside the homes.

아이의 가정은 여자들을 집 밖으로 못 나가게 하는 관습이 있습니다.

But her uncle, who was a university graduate,

하지만 대학을 졸업한 아이의 삼촌은

he wanted to give her an opportunity to see the world,

여자 아이에게 세상을 체험할 기회와

to be part of the society.

또 사회의 일부가 될 기회를 주고 싶었습니다.

Luckily, she has a name that can be used for both men and women.

다행히도 아이의 이름은 남녀 모두가 사용하는 것이었고

So he saw a chance to change her course of life.

삼촌은 아이의 인생을 바꿀 기회를 얻었습니다.

So he decided to raise her as a boy.

그리고 이 아이를 남자아이로 키우기로 결심했죠.

At three months old,

생후 3개월이 되자

she went from being a baby girl, to baby boy.

아이의 성별은 여자에서 남자로 바뀌었습니다.

She is given a boy's getup.

남자아이 같은 외모를 했고

She is allowed to go outside

밖에 나가놀아도 된다는 허락을 받았고

and get an education alongside boys.

남자아이들 사이에 섞여 교육을 받았습니다.

She is free, she is confident.

자유로웠고 자신감에 차 있죠.

She observes, she notes small, everyday injustices

자기가 사는 마을에서 여성에게 가해지는

faced by women and girls in her village.

사소한 일상 속의 부조리들을 목격하고 기록했습니다.

When newspapers arrive at her home,

아이의 집에 신문이 도착하면 아이는 신문이 가장 연장자인

she watches as it passes from the eldest man to the youngest man.

남자부터 가장 어린 남자에게 전달되는 것을 지켜봐야 했고

By the time women get hold of the paper,

여자들이 신문을 받을 때 쯤이면

it is old news.

이미 오래된 신문이 되어버렸죠.

She completes her eighth-grade year.

이제 아이는 8학년을 마쳤습니다.

Now fear starts to come in.

공포가 엄습해옵니다.

This will be the end of her education,

이것으로 공부가 끝날지도 모른다는 공포

because the only option for high school for further study

왜냐하면 고등학교 진학을 위해서는

is five kilometers away.

5km 밖에 있는 학교로 가야하기 때문입니다.

Boys have bicycles, they are free.

남자 아이들은 자유롭게 자전거를 가졌죠.

But she knows

하지만 아이는

her father will not allow her to travel on her own,

비록 자신이 남자아이인 척 하고 있어도 아버지가 자전거를 타고 먼 거리를

even if she were posing as a boy.

다니도록 허락하지 않을 것임을 알고 있습니다.

"I can't let you do that.

"허락할 수 없다.

And I don't have the time to walk you there and back.

그리고 너를 학교까지 등하교 시켜줄 시간적 여유도 없어.

Sorry, it is impossible."

미안하다 얘야."

She gets very upset.

아이는 매우 화가 납니다.

But a miracle happened.

하지만 기적이 일어났습니다.

A long-distance relative offers to teach her

멀리 사는 친척이 아이에게

ninth- and tenth-grade curricula

9학년과 10학년 과정을

during summer vacations.

여름 방학동안 가르쳐 주겠다고 한 것입니다.

This is how she completed her matriculation.

이렇게 아이는 대학교를 입학할 수 있었습니다.

The girl whom I am talking about to you

지금까지 여러분에게 설명드린 이 아이는

is me, Shameem, who is talking before you now.

바로 여러분 앞에서 이야기하는 저 샤밈입니다.

Throughout centuries, people have been fighting for their identity.

수 세기 동안 사람들은 자신의 정체성을 찾기 위해 싸워왔습니다.

People have been loved, privileged, because of their identity,

사람들은 자신이 가진 정체성, 국적, 민족성에 따라

their nationality, their ethnicity.

사랑받았고 특권을 누려왔습니다.

Again, people have been hated, denied,

마찬가지로 사람들은 자신의 국적과 정체성을 이유로

because of their nationality, their identity,

민족과, 성별, 종교를 이유로

their race, their gender, their religion.

혐오받고 부정당해 왔습니다.

Identity determines your position in society, wherever you live.

여러분이 어디에 살든 정체성이 사회 속에서 여러분의 위치를 결정합니다.

So if you ask me, I would say I hate this question of identity.

저로 말하자면 저는 이 정체성에 관한 질문을 싫어합니다.

Millions of girls in this world are being denied their basic rights

수백 만의 여자아이가 여자라는 이유만으로

because of being female.

기본적인 권리조차 부정당합니다.

I would have faced the same, if I hadn't been raised as a boy.

만약 제가 남자아이로 길러지지 않았다면 저 역시 그들 중 하나가 되었겠죠.

I was determined to continue my studies, to learn, to be free.

저는 자유를 위해 제 공부를 계속 이어나가기로 헀습니다.

After my schooling, even enrolling in college was not easy for me.

고등학교를 마치고 대학에 입학하는 것도 쉬운 일이 아니었죠.

I went on a three-day hunger strike.

3일이나 금식 투쟁을 벌였죠.

(Laughter)

Then, I got permission for college.

그렇게 해서 대학에 입학해도 된다는 허락을 얻었습니다.

(Laughter)

In that way, I completed my college.

이렇게 저는 2년제 대학을 마칠 수 있었습니다

Two years later, when the time came for me to go to university,

2년 후 4년제 대학에 갈 때가 다가왔죠.

my father turned his eyes, his attention, to my younger brothers.

아버지는 제 남동생들에게 관심을 더 많이 쏟기 시작했어요.

They need to be in school, secure jobs and support the family.

학교를 다니고 직장을 얻고 살림살이에 보탬이 되어야 했기 때문이죠.

And as a woman, my place was to be home.

여성으로서 저는 집에 머물러야 했습니다.

But, I don't give up.

하지만 전 포기하지 않았어요.

I sign up for a two-year program to become a lady health visitor.

저는 여성 방문 간호원이 되기 위한 2년짜리 과정에 등록했습니다.

Then I hear about Thardeep Rural Development Program,

그리고 타르딥(Thardeep) 시골 개발 프로그램에 관해 듣게 됐는데

a non-profit organization working to empower rural communities.

낙후된 시골을 돕기 위한 비영리단체입니다.

I sneak away.

저는 몰래 집을 빠져나왔습니다.

I travel five hours to interview for a position.

일자리가 있나 알아보기 위해 5시간이나 걸리는 거리를 여행했죠.

It is the first time I am the farthest from my home I have ever been.

태어나서 처음으로 가장 멀리 여행했어요.

I am closest to my freedom I have ever been.

태어나서 가장 자유와 가까워진 순간이죠.

Luckily, I got the job,

그리고 다행히도 일을 구할 수 있었습니다.

but the hardest part is facing my father.

하지만 아버지에게 말하는 게 가장 힘든 부분이에요.

(Laughter)

Relatives are already scaring him

친척들은 이미 아버지에게 집 나간 딸자식에 대해 걱정의

about his daughter wandering off,

말들을 쏟아내며 겁을 주었고

teasing him with talk of his daughter crossing the border.

어쩌면 국경을 넘었을지도 모른다며 아버지를 흔들었습니다.

When I return home,

제가 집에 돌아왔을 때

I want nothing more than just to accept the position in Thardeep.

저는 타르딥에서 일하는 것 말고는 아무것도 원하지 않았고

So that night, I packed all my things in a bag,

그날 밤 가방에 모든 짐을 챙겨넣었습니다.

and I walked into my father's room and told him,

그리고 아버지 방으로 가서

"Tomorrow morning, the bus is going to come in.

"내일 아침, 버스가 올 거예요.

If you believe in me,

아버지가 저를 믿는다면

if you believe in me,

아버지가 절 믿는다면

you will wake me up and take me to the bus station.

저를 깨워 버스 정류장까지 데려다 주세요.

If you don't, I'll understand."

만약 그렇게 하지 않으신다고 해도 아버지의 결정을 이해할게요."

Then I went to sleep.

그리고 저는 잠을 청했습니다.

The next morning, my father was standing beside me

다음날 아침, 아버지는 제 옆에 서 계셨고

to take me to the bus stop.

버스 정류장까지 데려다 주셨죠.

That day, I understood the importance of words.

그날 저는 말의 중요성을 깨달았습니다.

I understood how words affect our hearts,

말이 우리 마음에 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼치는지

how words play an important role in our lives.

말이 우리 인생에서 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지 말이죠.

I understood words are more powerful than fighting.

펜은 칼보다 강하다는 말을 실감했어요.

At TRDP, I saw there was a Pakistan which I didn't know,

TRDP에서 저는 지금까지 몰랐던 파키스탄

a country much more complex than I had realized.

제가 알고 있던 것보다 훨씬 복잡하게 얽힌 파키스탄을 목도하게 됐어요.

Until that, I thought I had a difficult life.

그 전까지 저는 제가 힘든 인생을 살고 있다고 생각했어요.

But here, I saw what women in other parts of Pakistan were experiencing.

하지만 이곳에서 저는 파키스탄의 다른 곳에서 여성들이 어떤 일을 겪는지

It really opened my eyes.

제 두 눈으로 직접 경험하고 현실에 눈 뜨게 됐어요.

Some women had 11 children but nothing to feed them.

어떤 여성들은 11명이나 되는 자식이 있는데도 먹일 것이 없었어요.

For getting water, they would walk three hours every day to wells.

물을 길어오려면 집에서 3시간 거리에 있는 우물까지 걸어서 다녀와야 했죠.

The nearest hospital was at least 32 kilometers away.

가장 가까운 병원도 32km나 떨어져 있었죠.

So if a woman is in labor,

일하는 여성이라면

she travels by camel to get to the hospital.

낙타를 타고 병원까지 가야합니다.

The distance is great; she may die on her way.

엄청난 거리죠. 가는 도중 죽을지도 몰라요.

So now, this became more than just a job for me.

그래서 이제 제 일은 단순한 일 이상이 되었어요.

I discovered my power.

저는 제 힘을 발견했죠.

Now, as I was getting salary,

저는 제가 버는 돈을

I started sending back money to my home.

집으로 보내기 시작했습니다.

Relatives and neighbors were noticing this.

친척과 이웃들도 이를 알고 있었죠.

Now they started to understand the importance of education.

그제야 이들도 교육의 중요성을 인지하기 시작했습니다.

By that time, some other parents started sending their daughters to school.

동시에 몇몇 부모들도 자기 딸을 학교에 보내기 시작했어요.

Slowly, it became easier and acceptable

서서히, 젊은 여성들을 2년제 대학에 보내는 일이

for young women to be in college.

좀 더 용이하고 받아들일 수 있는 일로 여겨지기 시작했어요.

Today, there isn't a single girl out of school in my village.

오늘날, 제 마을에서 학교를 다니지 않는 여자 아이는 한 명도 없습니다.

Girls are doing jobs in health sites, even in police.

여자들은 병원, 심지어는 경찰서에서 근무합니다.

Life was good.

삶은 더 나아졌죠

But somewhere in my heart,

하지만 제 마음속 어딘가에서

I realized that my region, beyond my village

저는 우리 마을을 넘어서 제가 사는 지역에도

needs further change.

더 큰 변화가 필요하다고 느꼈습니다.

This was also the time when I joined Acumen Fellowship.

이 때는 제가 어큐먼 모임에 가입한 시기이기도 합니다.

There, I met leaders like me across the country.

저는 나라 곳곳에서 저 같은 지도자들을 만날 수 있었죠.

And I saw they are taking risks in their lives.

이들도 역시 삶에서 위험을 감수하고 있었습니다.

I started to understand

저는 그 때 지도자가 된다는 말의

what leadership really means.

의미를 진정으로 깨닫기 시작했습니다.

So I decided to go back to my region

그래서 저는 제가 살던 지역으로 돌아가

and take a position as a teacher in a remote school,

멀리 떨어진 학교, 버스를 타야만 갈 수 있는

a school that I have to reach by bus --

매일 아침 저녁을, 편도로 2시간이 걸리는 학교에서

two hours traveling, every morning and evening.

선생님이 되기로 했습니다.

Though it was hard, on my first day I knew

힘들었지만 첫날 저는

I made the right decision.

제 선택이 옳았다고 느꼈습니다.

The first day I walked into the school,

학교에 들어선 첫 날,

I saw all these little Shameems staring back at me --

어린 샤밈들이 저를 바라보고 있었기 때문이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

with dreams in their eyes,

눈에 꿈을 가득 품은 채 말이죠.

the same dream of freedom which I had in my childhood.

제가 어렸을 적 간직했던 것과 같은 자유라는 꿈을요.

So the girls are eager to learn, but the school is understaffed.

여자아이들은 배우는 데 열심이었지만 학교는 인력이 부족했어요.

Girls sit hopeful,

여자아이들은 희망에 차 자리에 앉아 있었지만

learn nothing,

배울 수 있는 것이 없었고

and they leave.

학교를 떠났죠.

I can't bear to see this happening.

이를 두고만 볼 수 없었어요.

There was no turning back.

제 선택을 물릴 수는 없었죠.

I found my purpose.

저는 제 목표를 찾았습니다.

I enlisted a few of my friends to help me to teach.

제 친구들 몇 명을 더 모아 학교 선생님으로 등록했습니다.

I'm introducing my girls to the outside world

저는 교육과정 외 활동과 책을 통해

by extracurricular activities and books.

여자 아이들에게 바깥 세계를 알려주고 있습니다.

I share with them the profiles of the world's best leaders,

저는 아이들에게 마틴 루터 킹이나 넬슨 만델라 같은

like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

세계 최고 지도자들에 관해 이야기 해줍니다.

Last year, a few of our students went to college.

작년에 제가 가르친 학생 몇 명이 2년제 대학에 입학했습니다.

For me, I never stop studying.

저도 공부를 멈추지 않고 있습니다.

Today, I'm working to complete my PhD in education --

현재 저는 교육학에서 박사과정을 밟고 있는 중입니다.

which will allow me to gain a management position

박사 학위를 얻으면 학교라는 교육체계 내에서

in the school system,

관리직을 맡을 수 있게 됩니다.

and I will be able to make more decisions

또한 더 많은 결정권을 행사하고

and play a pivotal role in the system.

중추적 역할을 수행할 수 있게 됩니다.

I believe that without educating the girls,

저는 여성 교육이 더 확대되지 않으면

we may not make world peace.

세계 평화를 이룰 수 없다고 믿습니다.

We may not reduce child marriage.

아동 결혼이나

We may not reduce infant mortality rate.

영아 사망률을 낮추지 못할지도 모릅니다.

We may not reduce maternal mortality rate.

산모 사망률을 낮추지 못할지도 모릅니다.

For this, we have to continuously

그렇기에 우리는 끊임없이

and collectively work together.

같이 협력해야 합니다.

At least I am playing my role,

최소한 저는 제 역할을 다하고 있습니다.

though the destination is not close.

비록 목표가 가까이 있지는 않더라도 말이죠.

The road is not easy.

우리의 목표까지 도달하는 길은 순탄치 않겠죠.

But I have dreams in my eyes,

하지만 눈에 꿈을 품은 채 앞을 바라보고 있고

and I am not going to look back now.

뒤를 돌아보진 않을 겁니다.
