There are two kinds of responses

So there are examples like this in medicine --

so that you don't get a kind of ethical erosion

that this is what practitioners actually want.

People want to be allowed

to be virtuous.

They don't want to feel

Aristotle thought that practical wisdom

was the key to happiness,

and he was right.

আর তিনি ঠিকই ভেবেছিলেন।

There's now a lot of research being done in psychology

আজকাল মনোবিজ্ঞানে অনেক ধরণের গবেষণা হচ্ছে,

on what makes people happy,

and the two things that jump out in study after study --

I know this will come as a shock to all of you --

If you have that, good close relations with other people,

work that's meaningful and fulfilling,

যেটা অর্থবহ আর পরিপূর্ণ,

you don't much need anything else.

তাহলে আপনার আর বেশি কিছু লাগে না।

Well, to love well and to work well,

তো, ভালোভাবে ভালোবাসতে গেলে আর ভালোভাবে কাজ করতে গেলে

you need wisdom.

আপনার চাই প্রাজ্ঞতা।

Rules and incentives don't tell you

নিয়মকানুন আর সুযোগসুবিধা আপনাকে কখনই বলে দেবে না যে,

how to be a good friend, how to be a good parent,

কিভাবে একজন ভালো বন্ধু হতে হয়, কিভাবে ভালো অভিভাবক হতে হয়,

how to be a good spouse,

কিভাবে ভালো স্বামী/স্ত্রী হতে হয়

or how to be a good doctor or a good lawyer

কিভাবে ভালো ডাক্তার হতে হয়, ভালো উকিল,

or a good teacher.

ভালো শিক্ষক হতে হয়।

Rules and incentives

নিয়মকানুন আর সুযোগসুবিধা

are no substitutes for wisdom.

কখনই প্রাজ্ঞতার বিকল্প হতে পারে না।

Indeed, we argue,

বরং শেষপর্যন্ত, আমাদের দাবি হল,

there is no substitute for wisdom.

প্রাজ্ঞতার আসলে কোন বিকল্পই নেই।

And so practical wisdom

আর প্রায়োগিক প্রজ্ঞা প্রয়োগের জন্য

does not require

আত্মত্যাগমূলক কর্মকাণ্ড করারও

heroic acts of self-sacrifice

on the part of practitioners.

In giving us the will and the skill

to do the right thing -- to do right by others --

practical wisdom also gives us

the will and the skill
