The two brothers one day decided to go on a race,

এই দুই ভাই একদিন একটা দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতা করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন।

three times around the world.

তাঁরা গোটা পৃথিবী তিনবার চক্কর দিবেন।

Kartikeya leapt on his peacock

কার্তিক তাঁর বাহন ময়ুরে চড়ে বসলেন

and flew around the continents

আর মহাদেশ, পাহাড়-সমুদ্র

and the mountains and the oceans.

প্রদক্ষিণ করতে বেরোলেন।

He went around once,

তিনি ঘুরলেন একবার,

he went around twice,

দুইবার,

he went around thrice.

তিনবার।

But his brother, Ganesha,

কিন্তু তাঁর ভাই গণেশ,

simply walked around his parents

শুধু তাঁর পিতামাতাকে প্রদক্ষিন করলেন।

once, twice, thrice,

একবার, দুইবার, তিনবার,

and said, "I won."

আর বললেন, ‘আমি জিতেছি।’

"How come?" said Kartikeya.

‘কিভাবে?’, জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন কার্তিক।

And Ganesha said,

তখন গণেশ বললেন,

"You went around 'the world.'

‘তুমি ঘুরেছ ‘এই পৃথিবী’ আর

I went around 'my world.'"

আমি ঘুরেছি ‘আমার পৃথিবী’।

What matters more?

আর কী?’

If you understand the difference between 'the world' and 'my world,'

আপনি যদি ‘এই পৃথিবী’ আর ‘আমার পৃথিবী’র পার্থক্য বুঝতে পারেন,

you understand the difference between logos and mythos.

তাহলে আপনি পার্থক্য বুঝতে পারবেন বাস্তবতা আর পুরাণ কথার।

'The world' is objective,

‘এই দুনিয়াটা’ বস্তুবাদী,

logical, universal, factual,

যৌক্তিক, সার্বজনীন, সত্যনির্ভর,

scientific.

বিজ্ঞানসম্মত।

'My world' is subjective.

আর ‘আমার দুনিয়াটা’ মনঃকল্পিত।

It's emotional. It's personal.

আবেগপূর্ণ, ব্যক্তিগত।

It's perceptions, thoughts, feelings, dreams.

এটা অনুধাবন, ভাবনা, অনুভব, স্বপ্ন।

It is the belief system that we carry.

এটা সেই বিশ্বাস ব্যবস্থা, যা আমরা বহন করি।

It's the myth that we live in.

এটা সেই পৌরানিক এলাকা, যেখানে আমরা বাস করি।

'The world' tells us how the world functions,

‘এই পৃথিবীটা’ আমাদের বলে, কিভাবে এই দুনিয়াটা কাজ করে,

how the sun rises,

কিভাবে সূর্য ওঠে,

how we are born.

কিভাবে আমরা জন্মগ্রহণ করি।

'My world' tells us why the sun rises,

আমার পৃথিবী’ আমাদের বলে যে, কেন সূর্য‍্য ওঠে,

why we were born.

কেন আমরা জন্ম নিই।

Every culture is trying to understand itself:

প্রত্যেকটা সংস্কৃতিই নিজেদের বোঝার চেষ্টা করে:

"Why do we exist?"

‘কেন আমাদের অস্তিত্ব আছে?’

And every culture comes up with its own understanding of life,

আর প্রতিটা সংস্কৃতিই নিজেদের জীবনের একটা স্বতন্ত্র বোঝাপড়া নিয়ে হাজির হয়।

its own customized version of mythology.

নিজেদের গড়ে তোলা পুরাণকথাগুলো নিয়ে হাজির হয়।

Culture is a reaction to nature,

সংস্কৃতি গড়ে ওঠে প্রকৃতির সংস্পর্শে।

and this understanding of our ancestors

আর আমাদের পূর্বপুরুষদের এই বোঝাপড়া

is transmitted generation from generation

প্রবাহিত হয়েছে প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মান্তরে।

in the form of stories, symbols and rituals,

গল্প, প্রতীক, প্রথার মাধ্যমে।

which are always indifferent to rationality.

যেগুলো সবসময়ই যৌক্তিকতার প্রতি উদাসীন।

And so, when you study it, you realize

আর তাই, যখন আপনি এগুলো ঘাঁটতে যান, আপনি বুঝতে পারেন যে,

that different people of the world

বিভিন্ন মানুষ ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ভাবে

have a different understanding of the world.

Different people see things differently --

different viewpoints.

There is my world and there is your world,

এই হলো আমার দুনিয়া, আর ঐটা তোমার দুনিয়া।

and my world is always better than your world,

আর আমার দুনিয়া সবসময়ই তোমার থেকে ভালো।

because my world, you see, is rational

কারণ আমার দুনিয়া যৌক্তিক।

and yours is superstition.

আর তোমার দুনিয়া কুসংস্কারাচ্ছন্ন।

Yours is faith.

তোমারটা বিশ্বাস।

Yours is illogical.

তোমারটা অযৌক্তিক।

This is the root of the clash of civilizations.

এটাই হলো সভ্যতার সংঘাতের ভিত্তি।

It took place, once, in 326 B.C.

এর শুরু, খ্রীষ্টপূর্ব ৩২৬ সালে।

on the banks of a river called the Indus,

সিন্ধু নদীর ধারে,

now in Pakistan.

বর্তমান পাকিস্তানে।

This river lends itself to India's name.

এই নদী থেকেই ভারত তার নাম পেয়েছে।

India. Indus.

ইন্ডিয়া, ইনডাস।

Alexander, a young Macedonian,

আলেক্সান্ডার, তরুণ মেসেডোনিয়ান,

met there what he called a "gymnosophist,"

সেখানে এক মানুষের দেখা পেয়েছিলেন, যাকে তিনি ডেকেছিলেন, "নাগাসন‍্যাসী"

which means "the naked, wise man."

মানে ‘নগ্ন, জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি।’

We don't know who he was.

আমরা জানি না তিনি কে ছিলেন।

Perhaps he was a Jain monk,

হয়তো বা তিনি একজন জৈন সৈন‍্যাসী,

like Bahubali over here,

বাহুবলির মতো।

the Gomateshwara Bahubali

গোমাতেস্বরা বাহুবলি,

whose image is not far from Mysore.

তাঁর আবাস এই মহীসুর থেকে খুব বেশি দূরে নয়।

Or perhaps he was just a yogi

বা হয়তো তিনি শুধুই একজন যোগী,

who was sitting on a rock, staring at the sky

পাথরের উপরে বসে আকাশ,

and the sun and the moon.

চাঁদ-সূর্য দেখছিলেন।

Alexander asked, "What are you doing?"

আলেক্সান্ডার প্রশ্ন করেছিলেন, ‘তুমি কী করছ?’

and the gymnosophist answered,

আর সেই জিমনোসোফিস্ট উত্তর দিয়েছিলেন,

"I'm experiencing nothingness."

"আমি শুন‍্যতা অনুভব করছি।"

Then the gymnosophist asked,

তারপর পাল্টা প্রশ্ন করেছিলেন,

"What are you doing?"

"তুমি কী করছ?"

and Alexander said, "I am conquering the world."

তখন আলেক্সান্ডার বলেছিলেন, "আমি বিশ্বজয় করছি।"

And they both laughed.

আর তাঁরা দুজনেই হেসেছিলেন।

Each one thought that the other was a fool.

দুজনেই ভেবেছিলেন যে, আরেকজন কী বোকা!

The gymnosophist said, "Why is he conquering the world?

নাগাসন‍্যাসী ভেবেছিলেন, ‘কেন সে বিশ্বজয় করছে?

It's pointless."

এটা অর্থহীন।’

And Alexander thought,

আর আলেক্সান্ডার ভেবেছিলেন,

"Why is he sitting around, doing nothing?

‘কেন সে ওখানে বসে আছে? কিছুই করছে না?

What a waste of a life."

কীরকম জীবনের অপচয়।’

To understand this difference in viewpoints,

দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির এই পার্থক্যটা বুঝতে হলে

we have to understand

আমাদের বুঝতে হবে

the subjective truth of Alexander --

আলেক্সান্ডারের মনোঃকল্পিত সত্যটাকে --

his myth, and the mythology that constructed it.

তার পুরাণ, আর তাঁর মনোজগতের আদল গড়ে দেওয়া সেই পৌরানিকতাকে।

Alexander's mother, his parents, his teacher Aristotle

আলেক্সান্ডারের মা, তাঁর অভিভাবক, তাঁর শিক্ষক অ্যারিস্টোটল

told him the story of Homer's "Iliad."

তাঁকে শুনিয়েছেন হোমারের ইলিয়াডের কাহিনী।

They told him of a great hero called Achilles,

তাঁরা আলেক্সান্ডারকে বলেছেন অ্যাকিলিস নামের সেই মহান নায়কের কথা।

who, when he participated in battle, victory was assured,

যিনি, যখন কোন যুদ্ধে অংশ নিতেন, তখন জয় ছিল সুনিশ্চিত।

but when he withdrew from the battle,

কিন্তু যখন তিনি যুদ্ধক্ষেত্র থেকে নিজেকে প্রত্যাহার করে নিতেন,

defeat was inevitable.

তখন পরাজয় ছিল অনিবার্য।

"Achilles was a man who could shape history,

‘অ্যাকিলিস ছিলেন সেই মানুষ, যিনি ইতিহাসের গতি পাল্টাতে পারতেন।

a man of destiny,

একজন নিয়তি নির্ধারক মানুষ।

and this is what you should be, Alexander."

আর তোমাকেও এরকম হতে হবে আলেক্সান্ডার।’

That's what he heard.

এটাই শুনেছিলেন তিনি।

"What should you not be?

‘তোমার কার মতো হওয়া উচিত্ না?

You should not be Sisyphus,

সিসিফাসের মতো।

who rolls a rock up a mountain all day

যে সারাদিন ধরে একটা পাথরখণ্ড পাহাড়ের উপরে তোলে

only to find the boulder rolled down at night.

কিন্তু প্রতিরাতেই সেটা আবার নিচে গড়িয়ে পড়ে।

Don't live a life which is monotonous,

এমনভাবে জীবনযাপন করো না যেটা একঘঁেয়ে,

mediocre, meaningless.

সাধারণ ও অর্থহীন।

Be spectacular! --

আকর্ষণীয় হয়ে ওঠো!! --

like the Greek heroes,

গ্রীক বীরদের মতো,

like Jason, who went across the sea

জ্যাসনের মতো, যে সমুদ্র পাড়ি দিয়েছিল

with the Argonauts and fetched the Golden Fleece.

অ্যারগোনাটসের সঙ্গে আর নিয়ে এসেছিল সোনালী পালক।

Be spectacular like Theseus,

থেসিয়াসের মতো দর্শনীয় হও।

who entered the labyrinth and killed the bull-headed Minotaur.

যে গোলোকধঁাধায় ঢুকে মহিষ মাথার মাইনোটরকে হত্যা করেছিল।

When you play in a race, win! --

যখন তুমি কোন প্রতিযোগিতায় অংশ নেবে, তখন জিত --

because when you win, the exhilaration of victory

কারণ যখন তুমি জিতবে, তখন বিজয়ের সেই উল্লাসের মধ্য দিয়ে

is the closest you will come to the ambrosia of the gods."

তুমি দেবতাদের অমৃতের কাছাকাছি যেতে পারবে।’

Because, you see, the Greeks believed

কারণ, দেখুন, গ্রীকরা বিশ্বাস করে যে,

you live only once,

আপনার জীবন একটাই,

and when you die, you have to cross the River Styx.

আর যখন আপনার মৃত্যু হয়, তখন আপনাকে স্টিক্স নদী পার হতে হবে।

And if you have lived an extraordinary life,

আর যদি আপনি একটা অসাধারণ জীবন কাটাতে পারেন,

you will be welcomed to Elysium,

তাহলে আপনি ইলিসিয়ামে সাদর অভ্যর্থনা পাবেন।

or what the French call "Champs-Élysées" --

বা ফ্রেঞ্চরা যেটাকে ডাকে "সঁাজ-ইলিসি" --

(Laughter) --

the heaven of the heroes.

বীরদের স্বর্গ।

But these are not the stories that the gymnosophist heard.

কিন্তু সেই নাগাসন‍্যাসী এই ধরণের কোন গল্প শোনেননি।

He heard a very different story.

তিনি খুবই ভিন্ন ধরণের কিছু কাহিনী শুনেছিলেন।

He heard of a man called Bharat,

তিনি শুনেছিলেন ভরত নামে এক মানুষের কথা।

after whom India is called Bhārata.

যার নাম অনুসারে ভারতের নামকরণ হয়েছে।

Bharat also conquered the world.

ভরতও বিশ্বজয় করেছিলেন।

And then he went to the top-most peak

আর তারপর তিনি গিয়েছিলেন

of the greatest mountain of the center of the world

পৃথিবীর কেন্দ্রস্থলের সর্ববৃহত্ পর্বতের চূড়ায়।

called Meru.

যার নাম মেরু।

And he wanted to hoist his flag to say,

আর তিনি সেখানে পতাকা স্থাপন করে ঘোষণা করতে চেয়েছিলেন যে,

"I was here first."

"আমি এখানে প্রথমে এসেছি।"

But when he reached the mountain peak,

কিন্তু যখন তিনি সেই পর্বতের চূড়ায় পৌঁছালেন,

he found the peak covered with countless flags

তখন দেখলেন যে, চূড়াটা ইতিমধ্যেই তাঁর আগের বিশ্বজয়ীদের স্থাপন করা

of world-conquerors before him,

অগনিত পতাকায় ছেয়ে আছে।

each one claiming "'I was here first' ...

প্রত্যেকেই দাবি করছে, "আমি এখানে প্রথম এসেছি...

that's what I thought until I came here."

এটাই ভেবেছিলাম এখানে আসার আগ পর্যন্ত।"

And suddenly, in this canvas of infinity,

আর আকস্মিকভাবে এই অসীমের দৃশ্যপটে,

Bharat felt insignificant.

ভরতের নিজেকে খুবই গুরূত্বহীন মনে হলো।

This was the mythology of the gymnosophist.

সেই নাগাসন‍্যাসী এই পুরাণকথাই শুনেছিলেন।

You see, he had heroes, like Ram -- Raghupati Ram

তিনিও কিছু নায়কের কথা শুনেছেন। যেমন রাম -- রঘুপতি রাম,

and Krishna, Govinda Hari.

আর কৃষ্ণ, গোবিন্দ হরি।

But they were not two characters on two different adventures.

কিন্তু তাঁরা ভিন্ন দুইটা অভিযানের পৃথক দুইটি চরিত্র নন।

They were two lifetimes of the same hero.

তাঁরা একজন নায়কেরই দুইটা ভিন্ন ভিন্ন জীবনকালের চরিত্র।

When the Ramayana ends the Mahabharata begins.

যখন রামায়ন শেষ হয়, মহাভারত শুরু হয়।

When Ram dies, Krishna is born.

যখন রাম মৃত্যুবরণ করেন, কৃষ্ণ জন্ম নেন।

When Krishna dies, eventually he will be back as Ram.

কৃষ্ণ যখন মৃত্যুবরণ করেন, তখন তিনিই আবার ফিরে আসবেন রামের রূপে।

You see, the Indians also had a river

ভারতীয়দের বিশ্বাসেও একটা নদী আছে

that separates the land of the living from the land of the dead.

যেটা জীবিত ও মৃতদের দুনিয়াকে পৃথক করে।

But you don't cross it once.

কিন্তু আপনি এটা শুধু একবারই পার করেন না।

You go to and fro endlessly.

আপনার যাওয়া-আসা চলতে থাকে অনবরত।

It was called the Vaitarani.

এটাকে বলে বৈতরণী।

You go again and again and again.

আপনি এটা পার করেন বারবার, বারবার।

Because, you see,

কারণ, দেখুন,

nothing lasts forever in India, not even death.

ভারতে কোনকিছুই চিরকালের জন্য থাকে না, এমনকি মৃত্যও।

And so, you have these grand rituals

আর তাই এখানে দেবী মাতার

where great images of mother goddesses are built

বিশাল মূর্তি বানিয়ে পূজা করা হয়

and worshiped for 10 days ...

১০ দিন ধরে।

And what do you do at the end of 10 days?

আর কী করেন আপনি এই ১০ দিন পর?

You dunk it in the river.

বিসর্জন দিয়ে দেন নদীতে।

Because it has to end.

কারণ এটারও একটা সমাপ্তি আছে।

And next year, she will come back.

আর পরের বছর, আবার তিনি ফিরে আসবেন।

What goes around always comes around,

যা চলে যায়, তা আবার ফিরে আসে।

and this rule applies not just to man,

আর এই নিয়ম শুধু মানুষের ক্ষেত্রেই না,

but also the gods.

দেবতাদের ক্ষেত্রেও প্রযোজ্য।

You see, the gods

আপনি দেখেন যে, দেবতাদেরও

have to come back again and again and again

ফিরে আসতে হয় বারবার, বারবার, বারবার ।

as Ram, as Krishna.

রাম রুপে, কৃষ্ণ রুপে।

Not only do they live infinite lives,

তাঁরা শুধু সীমাহীন জীবন ধারণ করেন তাই না,

but the same life is lived infinite times

সেই একই জীবন তাঁদের ধারণ করতে হয় ভিন্ন ভিন্ন সময়কালে।

till you get to the point of it all.

যতক্ষণ না সবকিছুরই পরিসমাপ্তি ঘটে।

"Groundhog Day."

‘গ্রাউন্ডহগ ডে।’

Two different mythologies.

দুইটা ভিন্ন ভিন্ন পুরাণকথা।

Which is right?

কোনটা ঠিক?

Two different mythologies, two different ways of looking at the world.

দুইটা ভিন্নধর্মী পৌরানিকতা, দুনিয়াকে দেখার দুইটা পৃথক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি।

One linear, one cyclical.

একটা একরৈখিক, একটা আবর্তনশীল।

One believes this is the one and only life.

একটা বিশ্বাস করে যে, এটাই একমাত্র জীবন।

The other believes this is one of many lives.

আরেকটার বিশ্বাস, এটা অনেকগুলো জীবনের একটি।

And so, the denominator of Alexander's life was one.

আর তাই, আলেক্সান্ডারের জীবন নির্ধারক একটিই।

So, the value of his life was the sum total

তাই তাঁর জীবনের মূল্য দাঁড়ায় তাঁর

of his achievements.

সামগ্রিক অর্জনগুলোর সমষ্টি।

The denominator of the gymnosophist's life was infinity.

আর সেই নাগাসন‍্যাসীর জীবন নির্ধারক অসীম।

So, no matter what he did,

কাজেই, তিনি যাই করুন না কেন,

it was always zero.

ফলাফল সবসময়ই শূণ্য।

And I believe it is this mythological paradigm

আর আমার বিশ্বাস, এটাই সেই পৌরানিক ভিত্তি

that inspired Indian mathematicians

যা থেকে ভারতীয় গণিতবিদরা

to discover the number zero.

শূণ্য সংখ‍্যাটি আবিস্কার করেছিলেন।

Who knows?

কে জানে!

And that brings us to the mythology of business.

আর এটা আমাদের নিয়ে যায় কাজ-কারবারের উপর পুরাণের প্রভাবের কাছে।

If Alexander's belief influenced his behavior,

যদি আলেক্সান্ডারের বিশ্বাস তাঁর আচরণকে প্রভাবিত করে,

if the gymnosophist's belief influences his behavior,

যদি নাগাসন‍্যাসীর বিশ্বাস তাঁর আচরণকে প্রভাবিত করে,

then it was bound to influence the business they were in.

তাহলে নিশ্চিতভাবেই এটা আমরা যে কাজ-কারবারের সঙ্গে যুক্ত আছি, সেটাকেও প্রভাবিত করে।

You see, what is business

আপনি দেখেন যে, ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যটা কিভাবে হয়

but the result of how the market behaves

সেটা নির্ভর করে বাজারের আচরণের উপর,

and how the organization behaves?

ব্যবসায়িক সংগঠনের আচরণের উপর।

And if you look at cultures around the world,

আর যদি আপনি পৃথিবীর সংস্কৃতিগুলোর দিকে দৃষ্টি দেন,

all you have to do is understand the mythology

তাহলে আপনাকে শুধু তাদের পুরাণকথাগুলোকে বুঝতে হবে।

and you will see how they behave and how they do business.

তাহলেই আপনি বুঝতে পারবেন যে, তাদের আচরণ কেমন এবং তারা কিভাবে ব্যবসা করে।

Take a look.

খেয়াল করুন।

If you live only once, in one-life cultures around the world,

যদি আপনার জীবন একবারের জন্য হয়, পৃথিবীর অনেক জায়গার এক-জীবন সংস্কৃতির মতো

you will see an obsession with binary logic,

তাহলে আপনার মন আচ্ছন্ন হয়ে থাকবে একমুখী যুক্তি,

absolute truth, standardization,

চূড়ান্ত সত্য, আদর্শকরণ,

absoluteness, linear patterns in design.

But if you look at cultures which have cyclical

কিন্তু আপনি যদি এমন সংস্কৃতিতে থাকেন যেখানে জীবনটা আবর্তনশীল

and based on infinite lives, you will see a comfort with fuzzy logic,

ও অন্তহীন জন্মে বিশ্বাস করে তাহলে যুক্তি বিন্যাসের ক্ষেত্রে দেখবেন অস্পষ্টতা,

with opinion,

মতামতযুক্ত

with contextual thinking,

পরিস্থিতিভিত্তিক চিন্তাভাবনা।

with everything is relative, sort of --

সেখানে সবকিছুই আপেক্ষিক। কোন রকমের --

mostly.

You look at art. Look at the ballerina,

আপনি শিল্পকলার দিকে তাকান। ব্যালে-নর্তকীদের কথা ভাবুন,

how linear she is in her performance.

And then look at the Indian classical dancer,

the Kuchipudi dancer, the Bharatanatyam dancer,

curvaceous.

And then look at business.

এবার ব‍্যবসা-বানিজে‍্যর কথা ভাবুন।

Standard business model:

আদর্শ ব্যবসায়িক মডেল:

vision, mission, values, processes.

রুপকল্প, লক্ষ্য, মূল্যবোধ, প্রক্রিয়া।

Sounds very much like the journey through

শুনে মনে হয় অনেকটা যেন

the wilderness to the promised land,

উষর জনহীন প্রান্তর থেকে প্রতিশ্রুতির দেশে যাত্রা,

with the commandments held by the leader.

যেখানে নেতার হাতে আছে ঐশিক আদেশ।

And if you comply, you will go to heaven.

যদি আপনি সেটা মেনে চলেন তাহলে চলে যাবেন স্বর্গে।

But in India there is no "the" promised land.

কিন্তু ভারতে কোন ‘সেই’ প্রতিশ্রুতির দেশ নেই।

There are many promised lands,

এখানে 'অনেক' প্রতিশ্রুতির দেশ আছে।

You see, businesses are not run as institutions,

by the idiosyncrasies of individuals.

It's always about taste.

You see, Indian music, for example,

উদাহরণ হিসেবে ভারতীয় সঙ্গীতের দিকে তাকান,

does not have the concept of harmony.

এখানে কোন ঐকতানের ধারণা নেই।

There is no orchestra conductor.

এখানে নেই কোন অর্কেস্ট্রা পরিচালক।

There is one performer standing there, and everybody follows.

এখানে একজন পারফরমার দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে এবং সবাই তঁাকে অনুসরণ করে।

And you can never replicate that performance twice.

আর আপনি এই পরিবেশনাটিকে কখনও দ্বিতীয়বার হুবহু করতে পারবেন না।

It is not about documentation and contract.

এখনে কোন ডকুমেন্টেশন বা চুক্তির ব্যাপার নেই।

It's about conversation and faith.

এখানে সবকিছুই সংলাপ ও বিশ্বাস।

It's not about compliance. It's about setting,

এটা অপরের আনুগত্য বা ইচ্ছা মেনে নেওয়ার ব্যাপার না। এটা ঐক্যমত্যে পৌঁছিয়ে,

getting the job done, by bending or breaking the rules --

just look at your Indian people around here,

you'll see them smile; they know what it is.

And then look at people who have done business in India,

you'll see the exasperation on their faces.

You see, this is what India is today. The ground reality

So, it's rapidly changing, highly diverse,

chaotic, ambiguous, unpredictable.

And people are okay with it.

And then globalization is taking place.

The demands of modern institutional thinking is coming in.

আসছে আধুনিক, প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক চিন্তাধারার দাবি,

Which is rooted in one-life culture.

যেটার গোড়া পোঁতা আছে একবারের জীবনধারণের সংস্কৃতিতে।

And a clash is going to take place,

ফলে অনুষ্ঠিত হতে যাচ্ছে একটা সংঘাত।

like on the banks of the Indus.

যেমনটা একবার হয়েছিল সিন্ধু উপত্যকায়।

It is bound to happen.

এটা আবশ্যম্ভাবী।

I have personally experienced it. I'm trained as a medical doctor.

আমি এটা ব্যক্তিগতভাবে উপলব্ধি করেছি। আমি একজন চিকিৎসক হিসেবে প্রশিক্ষিত।

I did not want to study surgery. Don't ask me why.

আমি শল্যচিকিৎসা পড়তে চাইনি। জিজ্ঞাসা করবেন না কেন।

I love mythology too much.

আমি পুরাণকথা খুবই ভালোবাসি।

I wanted to learn mythology. But there is nowhere you can study.

So, I had to teach it to myself.

I even was a business consultant, doing strategies and tactics.

And he knew very intuitively,

that best practices,

developed in Japan and China and Europe and America

will not work in India.

He knew that institutional thinking doesn't work in India. Individual thinking does.

তিনি জানতেন যে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক ধারার চিন্তাভাবনা ভারতে কাজ করবে না। কাজ করবে ব্যক্তিভিত্তিক চিন্তা।

He had an intuitive understanding of the mythic structure of India.

ভারতের পুরাণভিত্তিক কাঠামোটা সম্পর্কে তাঁর একটা বোঝাপড়া ছিল।

So, he had asked me to be the Chief Belief Officer, and said,

তো, তিনি আমাকে এখানকার প্রধান বিশ্বাস অফিসারের দায়িত্ব নিতে বলেছিলেন। বলেছিলেন যে,

"All I want to do is align belief."

Sounds so simple.

But belief is not measurable.

You can't measure it. You can't manage it.

So, how do you construct belief?

তো, কিভাবে আপনি এই বিশ্বাস গড়ে তুলবেন?

How do you enhance the sensitivity of people to Indian-ness.

আপনি কিভাবে মানুষের সংবেদনশীলতা বাড়িয়ে সেটা ভারতীয়তার দিকে নিয়ে যাবেন?

Even if you are Indian, it is not very explicit, it is not very obvious.

So, I tried to work on the standard model of culture,

which is, develop stories, symbols and rituals.

You see it is based on the Hindu ritual of Darshan.

Hindus don't have the concept of commandments.

হিন্দুদের মধ্যে ঐশিক আদেশ জাতীয় কোন ধারণা নেই।

So, there is nothing right or wrong in what you do in life.

কাজেই, জীবনে কোনকিছু সঠিক বা ভুল করা জাতীয় কোন জিনিস এখানে নেই।

So, you're not really sure how you stand in front of God.

ঈশ্বরের সামনে কিভাবে দাঁড়াবেন সে ব্যাপারেও আপনি নিশ্চিত নন।

So, when you go to the temple, all you seek is an audience with God.

আপনি যখন কোন মন্দিরে যান, তখন আপনি ঈশ্বরের দর্শন চান।

You want to see God.

আপনি চান যে, ঈশ্বর যেন আপনাকে দেখেন।

And you want God to see you, and hence the gods have very large eyes,

আর একারণেই দেবদেবীদের খুব বড় বড় চোখ থাকে।

large unblinking eyes,

বড়, পলকহীন চোখ,

sometimes made of silver,

কখনও কখনও রুপার তৈরি।

so they look at you.

যেন তাঁরা আপনাকে ভালোমতো দেখতে পারেন।

Because you don't know whether you're right or wrong, and so all you seek

কারণ সঠিক-ভুল সম্পর্কে আপনি নিশ্চিত নন। কাজেই আপনি চান একটা

is divine empathy.

ঈশ্বরিক সহানুভূতি।

"Just know where I came from, why I did the Jugaad."

‘তুমি শুধু জান যে, আমি কোথা থেকে এসেছি। কেন আমি এমনটা করেছি।’

"Why did I do the setting,

‘আমি কী করেছি,

why I don't care for the processes. Just understand me, please."

কেন আমি প্রক্রিয়াটা নিয়ে ভাবি নি। তুমি শুধু অনুগ্রহ করে আমাকে বুঝে নিও।’

And based on this, we created a ritual for leaders.

আর এটার উপর ভিত্তি করে আমরা দলপতিদের জন্য একটা আচার-অনুষ্ঠান বানিয়েছিলাম।

After a leader completes his training and is about to take over the store,

দলপতি তার প্রশিক্ষণ শেষ করার পর যখন একটা দোকানের দায়িত্ব নিতে যাবে, তখন

we blindfold him, we surround him with the stakeholders,

আমরা তার চোখ বেঁধে দিতাম।তারপর তাকে ঘোরানো হতো তার জামানতকারী,

the customer, his family, his team, his boss.

ক্রেতা, তার পরিবার, তার দল, তার বসের সামনে।

You read out his KRA, his KPI, you give him the keys,

তাকে তার কেপিএ, কেপিআই পড়ে শোনানোর পর হাতে চাবি দেওয়া হতো।

and then you remove the blindfold.

আর তারপর খুলে দেওয়া হতো তার চোখ।

And invariably, you see a tear,

আর অনিবার্যভাবে তার চোখে দেখা যেত জলের কনা।

because the penny has dropped.

সে ব্যাপারটা বুঝতে পারত।

He realizes that to succeed,

সে বুঝতে পারত যে, সফল হতে গেলে

he does not have to be a "professional,"

তাকে একজন ‘পেশাজীবী’ হতে হবে না।

he does not have to cut out his emotions,

সব ধরণের আবেগ-অনুভূতি বিসর্জন দেওয়ার কোন প্রয়োজন তার নেই।

he has to include all these people

সফলতা পেতে হলে তাকে শুধু এই মানুষগুলোকে নিজের দুনিয়ার

in his world to succeed, to make them happy,

অন্তর্ভূক্ত করতে হবে। তাদেরকে খুশি করতে হবে।

to make the boss happy, to make everyone happy.

বসকে খুশি করতে হবে। সবাইকে খুশি করতে হবে।

The customer is happy, because the customer is God.

ক্রেতাদের খুশি করতে হবে। কারণ ক্রেতারাই ঈশ্বর।

That sensitivity is what we need. Once this belief enters,

শুধু এই সংবেদনশীলতাটাই আমরা চেয়েছিলাম। একবার যখন এই বিশ্বাসটা তাদের মধ্যে ঢুকে যাবে,

behavior will happen, business will happen.

তার আচরণে সেটার প্রভাব পড়বে। তার ব্যবসায় প্রভাব পড়বে।

And it has.

আর ঘটেও এমনটা।

So, then we come back to Alexander

তো, এবার আমরা আবার ফিরে যাই আলেক্সান্ডার

and to the gymnosophist.

ও সেই নাগাসন‍্যাসীর কাছে।

And everybody asks me, "Which is the better way, this way or that way?"

সবাই আমাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করে, ‘কোন পথটা ভালো, এইটা নাকি ঐটা?’

And it's a very dangerous question,

আর এটা খুবই বিপদজনক প্রশ্ন।

because it leads you to the path of fundamentalism and violence.

কারণ এটা আপনাকে নিয়ে যাবে মৌলবাদ ও সহিংসতার পথে।

So, I will not answer the question.

কাজেই আমি এই প্রশ্নের কোন উত্তর দেব না।

What I will give you is an Indian answer,

আমি আপনাদের দেব একটা ভারতীয় উত্তর।

the Indian head-shake.

ভারতীয় মাথা নাড়া।

Depending on the context,

পরিস্থিতির উপর নির্ভর করে,

depending on the outcome,

পরিণতির উপর নির্ভর করে,

choose your paradigm.

আপনার পন্থা বেছে নিন।

You see, because both the paradigms are human constructions.

কারণ এই দুইটি পন্থাই মানুষের গড়ে তোলা।

They are cultural creations,

এগুলো সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে তৈরি হয়েছে,

not natural phenomena.

প্রাকৃতিকভাবে নয়।

And so the next time you meet someone, a stranger,

কাজেই পরবর্তীতে আপনি যখন কোন অচেনা মানুষের সঙ্গে পরিচিত হবেন,

one request:

তখন আমার অনুরোধ যে,

Understand that you live in the subjective truth,

আপনি স্মরণ করবেন আপনার একটা মনোজাগতিক সত্য আছে, যেটায় আপনি বাস করেন।

and so does he.

ঠিক তেমনটা তারও আছে।

Understand it.

এটাকে বোঝার চেষ্টা করবেন।

And when you understand it you will discover something spectacular.

আর যখন আপনি এটা বুঝতে পারবেন তখন আপনি আবিস্কার করবেন চমকপ্রদ কিছু।

You will discover that within infinite myths

আপনি আবিস্কার করবেন যে, অজস্র পুরাণের মধ্যেই

lies the eternal truth.

নিহিত আছে চিরন্তন সত্য।

Who sees it all?

কে সবটা দেখেছে?

Varuna has but a thousand eyes.

বরুনের ছিল এক হাজার চোখ,

Indra, a hundred.
