you have to hear a story

But his brother, Ganesha,

What matters more?

If you understand the difference between 'the world' and 'my world,'

you understand the difference between logos and mythos.

'The world' is objective,

logical, universal, factual,

तर्कशुद्ध, सार्वत्रिक, सत्यस्थितीला धरून,

scientific.

'My world' is subjective.

It's emotional. It's personal.

ते हळवं असतं. ते वैयक्तिक असतं.

It's perceptions, thoughts, feelings, dreams.

त्यात जाणिवा, विचार, भावना आणि स्वप्नं असतात.

It is the belief system that we carry.

ती आपल्याबरोबर असलेली एक श्रद्धेची यंत्रणा असते.

It's the myth that we live in.

आपण जिच्यात जगत असतो अशी ती एक अशी पुराणकथा असते.

'The world' tells us how the world functions,

'जग' आपल्याला सांगतं पृथ्वी कशी चालते,

how the sun rises,

सूर्य कसा उगवतो,

how we are born.

आपण कसे जन्माला आलो.

'My world' tells us why the sun rises,

'माझं जग' आपल्याला सांगतं सूर्य का उगवतो,

why we were born.

आपण जन्माला का आलो.

Every culture is trying to understand itself:

प्रत्येक संस्कृती स्वतःला समजून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करत असते,

"Why do we exist?"

"आपल्या अस्तित्वाचं कारण काय आहे?"

And every culture comes up with its own understanding of life,

आणि प्रत्येक संस्कृतीची जीवनाबद्दलच्या समजुतीविषयी

its own customized version of mythology.

स्वत:ची एक वेगळी दंतकथा आहे.

Culture is a reaction to nature,

संस्कृती म्हणजे निसर्गावरची आपली प्रतिक्रिया असते,

and this understanding of our ancestors

is transmitted generation from generation

in the form of stories, symbols and rituals,

And so, when you study it, you realize

because my world, you see, is rational

and yours is superstition.

आणि तुमच्यात अंधश्रद्धा असते,

Yours is faith.

भाबडा भरवसा असतो,

Yours is illogical.

तर्कशून्यपणा असतो.

This is the root of the clash of civilizations.

It took place, once, in 326 B.C.

एकदा हे ख्रिस्तपूर्व ३२६ व्या वर्षी घडलं

on the banks of a river called the Indus,

now in Pakistan.

जी आता पाकिस्तानात आहे.

This river lends itself to India's name.

या नदीवरून भारत देशाला अजून एक नाव मिळालं:

India. Indus.

हिदुस्थान. सिंधू.

Alexander, a young Macedonian,

अॅलेक्झांडर नावाचा मॅसिडोनिया राज्यातला एक युवक,

met there what he called a "gymnosophist,"

एका "जिम्नॉसॉफ़िस्ट" ला भेटला

which means "the naked, wise man."

म्हणजेच एका "नग्न, ज्ञानी पुरुषाला" ला भेटला.

We don't know who he was.

तो कोण होता कोणास ठाऊक.

Perhaps he was a Jain monk,

कदाचित, एक जैन ऋषी होता

like Bahubali over here,

इथल्या बाहुबली सारखा,

the Gomateshwara Bahubali

गोमतेश्वर बाहुबली

whose image is not far from Mysore.

ज्यांची मूर्ती मैसूरपासून फार लांब नाहीये.

Or perhaps he was just a yogi

किंवा कदाचित, तो एक योगी होता,

who was sitting on a rock, staring at the sky

and the sun and the moon.

Alexander asked, "What are you doing?"

and the gymnosophist answered,

Then the gymnosophist asked,

"What are you doing?"

and Alexander said, "I am conquering the world."

And they both laughed.

Each one thought that the other was a fool.

The gymnosophist said, "Why is he conquering the world?

It's pointless."

And Alexander thought,

"Why is he sitting around, doing nothing?

To understand this difference in viewpoints,

we have to understand

the subjective truth of Alexander --

his myth, and the mythology that constructed it.

Alexander's mother, his parents, his teacher Aristotle

अॅलेक्झांडरच्या आईनं, त्याच्या वडिलांनी , त्याचे गुरू ऍरिस्टॉटलनी

told him the story of Homer's "Iliad."

त्याला होमरच्या "इलियड" मधली गोष्ट सांगितली होती.

They told him of a great hero called Achilles,

त्यांनी अॅलेक्झांडरला सांगितलं की, अकिलीस नावाचा एक असा थोर नायक होता,

who, when he participated in battle, victory was assured,

ज्याचे युद्धात आगमन होताच यश निश्चित होत असे,

but when he withdrew from the battle,

defeat was inevitable.

पराभव अटळ असे.

"Achilles was a man who could shape history,

a man of destiny,

and this is what you should be, Alexander."

That's what he heard.

"What should you not be?

You should not be Sisyphus,

who rolls a rock up a mountain all day

Don't live a life which is monotonous,

mediocre, meaningless.

Be spectacular! --

like the Greek heroes,

ग्रीक नायकांसारखा,

like Jason, who went across the sea

जेसन सारखा, ज्याने समुद्र ओलांडला

with the Argonauts and fetched the Golden Fleece.

आर्गोनोट्सबरोबर आणि सोन्याची लोकर मिळवली.

Be spectacular like Theseus,

who entered the labyrinth and killed the bull-headed Minotaur.

When you play in a race, win! --

Because, you see, the Greeks believed

and when you die, you have to cross the River Styx.

And if you have lived an extraordinary life,

But these are not the stories that the gymnosophist heard.

He heard a very different story.

He heard of a man called Bharat,

त्याने ऐकली होती गोष्ट भरताची,

after whom India is called Bhārata.

ज्याच्या नावामुळे इंडियाला भारत हे नाव आहे.

Bharat also conquered the world.

भरतानेदेखील जग जिंकलं होतं.

And then he went to the top-most peak

आणि मग तो जगाच्या मध्यभागी असलेल्या

of the greatest mountain of the center of the world

सर्वात उंच, मेरू पर्वताच्या

called Meru.

शिखरावर गेला.

And he wanted to hoist his flag to say,

"I was here first."

But when he reached the mountain peak,

he found the peak covered with countless flags

of world-conquerors before him,

each one claiming "'I was here first' ...

that's what I thought until I came here."

And suddenly, in this canvas of infinity,

Bharat felt insignificant.

भरताला आपण तुच्छ असल्यासारखे वाटले.

This was the mythology of the gymnosophist.

जिम्नॉसॉफ़िस्टच्या पुराणकथांच्या मागे असे विचार होते.

You see, he had heroes, like Ram -- Raghupati Ram

त्याच्यासाठी नायक होते ते, राम -- रघुपती राम

and Krishna, Govinda Hari.

आणि कृष्ण, गोविंद हरी.

But they were not two characters on two different adventures.

पण ते दोन वेगळ्या प्रवासातील दोन वेगळी पात्रं नव्हते.

They were two lifetimes of the same hero.

When the Ramayana ends the Mahabharata begins.

When Ram dies, Krishna is born.

रामाचा मृत्यू झाला, की कृष्णजन्म होतो.

When Krishna dies, eventually he will be back as Ram.

कृष्णाचा मृत्यू झाला, की तो कधीतरी पुन्हा राम म्हणून परत येईल.

You see, the Indians also had a river

भारतीयांमध्ये पण एक नदी होती,

that separates the land of the living from the land of the dead.

जिवंत आणि मृतांच्या जमिनींना विभागणारी.

But you don't cross it once.

पण तुम्ही ती एकदाच पार करायची नसते.

You go to and fro endlessly.

तुम्ही तिच्यात निरंतर इकडून तिकडे ये-जा करत राहता.

It was called the Vaitarani.

त्या नदीचे नाव वैतरणी होते.

You go again and again and again.

तुम्ही हा प्रवास पुन्हा पुन्हा करत राहता.

Because, you see,

याचं कारण असं की

nothing lasts forever in India, not even death.

भारतात कुठलीच गोष्ट शाश्वत नसते, अगदी मृत्यूसुद्धा.

And so, you have these grand rituals

आणि म्हणून असे मोठे सण असतात

where great images of mother goddesses are built

ज्या मध्ये देवीच्या मोठ्या मूर्ती घडवल्या जातात

and worshiped for 10 days ...

आणि त्यांची दहा दिवस पूजा केली जाते ...

And what do you do at the end of 10 days?

आणि दहा दिवसांनंतर त्यांचं काय केलं जातं?

You dunk it in the river.

Because it has to end.

And next year, she will come back.

What goes around always comes around,

and this rule applies not just to man,

You see, the gods

have to come back again and again and again

Not only do they live infinite lives,

but the same life is lived infinite times

till you get to the point of it all.

Two different mythologies.

दोन वेगळ्या संस्कृती, वेगळ्या पुराणकथा.

Which is right?

कोणती बरोबर आहे?

Two different mythologies, two different ways of looking at the world.

दोन वेगळ्या दंतकथा, जगाकडे बघण्याचे दोन वेगळे दृष्टिकोन.

One linear, one cyclical.

एक सरळ रेषेसारखे आणि एक चक्रीय.

One believes this is the one and only life.

एकाची श्रद्धा आहे की हे आयुष्य म्हणजे एकमेव आयुष्य आहे.

The other believes this is one of many lives.

तर दुसऱ्याची श्रद्धा आहे की हे अनेक आयुष्यांपैकी एक आहे.

And so, the denominator of Alexander's life was one.

आणि म्हणूनच अॅलेक्झांडरच्या आयुष्याचा विभाजक एक होता.

So, the value of his life was the sum total

of his achievements.

The denominator of the gymnosophist's life was infinity.

So, no matter what he did,

it was always zero.

And I believe it is this mythological paradigm

that inspired Indian mathematicians

to discover the number zero.

’शून्य’ या संख्येचा शोध लावला असावा.

Who knows?

कोणाला ठाऊक?

And that brings us to the mythology of business.

आणि आता आपण बघूयात, ही पुराणकथांची भानगड काय आहे.

If Alexander's belief influenced his behavior,

जर अॅलेक्झांडरची वागणूक त्याच्या श्रद्धेशी निगडित असेल,

if the gymnosophist's belief influences his behavior,

आणि जिम्नॉसॉफ़िस्टची श्रद्धा त्याची वागणूक स्पष्ट करत असेल,

then it was bound to influence the business they were in.

You see, what is business

व्यापार म्हणजे तरी काय,

but the result of how the market behaves

बाजार कसा वागतो

and how the organization behaves?

आणि एक व्यावसायिक संघटना कशी वागते हेच ना?

And if you look at cultures around the world,

जर तुम्हाला जगातील संस्कृती समजावून घ्यायच्या असतील,

all you have to do is understand the mythology

तर केवळ त्यांच्या पुराणकथांमागचे विचार समजावून घ्या.

and you will see how they behave and how they do business.

मग तुमच्या लक्षात येईल, त्या कशा वागतात आणि कशा चालतात.

Take a look.

If you live only once, in one-life cultures around the world,

you will see an obsession with binary logic,

You look at art. Look at the ballerina,

And then look at the Indian classical dancer,

the Kuchipudi dancer, the Bharatanatyam dancer,

And then look at business.

Standard business model:

vision, mission, values, processes.

Sounds very much like the journey through

the wilderness to the promised land,

with the commandments held by the leader.

And if you comply, you will go to heaven.

But in India there is no "the" promised land.

पण भारतात स्वर्गाची अशी एक व्याख्या नाही आहे.

There are many promised lands,

अनेक आहेत.

depending on your station in society,

समाजातील हुद्द्यानुसार,

depending on your stage of life.

जीवनातील टप्प्यानुसार.

You see, businesses are not run as institutions,

इथले व्यवसाय एखाद्या संस्थेसारखे

by the idiosyncrasies of individuals.

कुण्या एकाच्या लहरी विचारांवर चालवले जात नाहीत.

It's always about taste.

सगळं कायम आवडीप्रमाणे असतं.

It's always about my taste.

माझ्या आवडीप्रमाणे.

You see, Indian music, for example,

उदाहरणार्थ हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीतात

does not have the concept of harmony.

’हार्मनी’ (शिस्तबद्ध एकत्र वादन) ही संकल्पना नाही आहे.

There is no orchestra conductor.

वाद्यवृंदाचा मार्गदर्शक असा कोणीच नसतो.

There is one performer standing there, and everybody follows.

तिथे एक मुख्य कलाकार असतो आणि त्याला अनुसरून इतर लोक वाजवतात.

And you can never replicate that performance twice.

एक प्रयोग त्याच प्रकारे पुन्हा कधीच सादर होत नाही.

It is not about documentation and contract.

त्यात कुठलीच कागदपत्रे किंवा करार नसतो.

It's about conversation and faith.

सगळं संवादावर आणि विश्वासावर चालतं.

It's not about compliance. It's about setting,

त्यात कशाचं पालन नसतं. त्यात असतो माहोल.

getting the job done, by bending or breaking the rules --

just look at your Indian people around here,

you'll see them smile; they know what it is.

And then look at people who have done business in India,

You see, this is what India is today. The ground reality

is based on a cyclical world view.

So, it's rapidly changing, highly diverse,

त्यामुळे ते वेगाने बदलणारं, विविधतापूर्ण,

chaotic, ambiguous, unpredictable.

गोंधळलेलं, अनेकार्थी, अंदाज लावता न येणारं असं आहे.

And people are okay with it.

आणि लोकांना हे चालतं.

And then globalization is taking place.

आता जागतिकीकरण होतंय.

The demands of modern institutional thinking is coming in.

संस्थांवर आधारलेल्या आधुनिक विचारसरणीची गरज भासू लागलीय,

Which is rooted in one-life culture.

जिची मुळं एकेरी-आयुष्य संस्कृतीत दडलेली आहेत.

And a clash is going to take place,

आणि संघर्ष होणार आहे,

like on the banks of the Indus.

जसा सिंधू नदीच्या किनारी झाला होता.

It is bound to happen.

हे होणारच आहे.

I have personally experienced it. I'm trained as a medical doctor.

मी हे स्वतः अनुभवलं आहे. मी एक मेडिकल डॉक्टर आहे.

I did not want to study surgery. Don't ask me why.

मला शस्त्रक्रिया करायला शिकायचं नव्हतं. का ते विचारू नका.

I love mythology too much.

मला पौराणिक कथांचा अभ्यास करायला जरा जास्तच आवडतो.

I wanted to learn mythology. But there is nowhere you can study.

मला पौराणिक कथांच्या मागचा विचार शिकायचा होता. पण त्याचा अभ्यास कुठेच शिकवला जात नाही.

So, I had to teach it to myself.

त्यामुळे मलाच स्वतःला शिकवायला लागलं.

And mythology does not pay, well, until now.

आणि पौराणिक कथांचा अभ्यास करून पोट भरत नाही, अं..आजवर भरत नव्हतं.

So, I had to take up a job. And I worked in the pharma industry.

त्यामुळे मला नोकरी करावी लागली. आणि मी औषधनिर्मिती क्षेत्रात नोकरी केली.

And I worked in the healthcare industry.

मी आरोग्यसेवा-क्षेत्रात पण काम केलं.

And I worked as a marketing guy, and a sales guy,

आणि विक्रेता म्हणून, जाणकार म्हणून,

and a knowledge guy, and a content guy, and a training guy.

माहितगार आणि शिक्षक म्हणून काम केले.

I even was a business consultant, doing strategies and tactics.

And I would see the exasperation

You see, he has established the largest retail chain, called Big Bazaar.

And he was dealing with diverse and dynamic markets.

And he knew very intuitively,

He knew that institutional thinking doesn't work in India. Individual thinking does.

He had an intuitive understanding of the mythic structure of India.

Sounds so simple.

You can't measure it. You can't manage it.

So, how do you construct belief?

How do you enhance the sensitivity of people to Indian-ness.

लोकांची भारतीयपणाबद्दल संवेदनशीलता, कशी वाढवता येईल.

Even if you are Indian, it is not very explicit, it is not very obvious.

जरी तुम्ही भारतीय असाल तरी ते इतकं उघड नाही आहे, स्पष्ट नाही आहे.

So, I tried to work on the standard model of culture,

which is, develop stories, symbols and rituals.

And I will share one of the rituals with you.

You see it is based on the Hindu ritual of Darshan.

Hindus don't have the concept of commandments.

So, there is nothing right or wrong in what you do in life.

So, you're not really sure how you stand in front of God.

So, when you go to the temple, all you seek is an audience with God.

Because you don't know whether you're right or wrong, and so all you seek

And based on this, we created a ritual for leaders.

After a leader completes his training and is about to take over the store,

या अधिकाऱ्याचे प्रशिक्षण होऊन तो एका दुकानाचा कारभार हाती घ्यायला तयार झाला की,

we blindfold him, we surround him with the stakeholders,

आम्ही त्याचे डोळे झाकायचो, त्याच्याभोवती

the customer, his family, his team, his boss.

ग्राहक, त्याचे कुटुंबीय, त्याचे सहकारी, त्याचे वरिष्ठ जमत.

You read out his KRA, his KPI, you give him the keys,

त्याचा के. आर. ए. , के. पी. आय. (त्याच्या जबाबदार्‍या, त्याच्या कामाचं मूल्यांकन) सर्वांसमोर वाचून,

and then you remove the blindfold.

त्याला किल्ल्या दिल्या जात आणि मग त्याचे डोळे उघडले जायचे.

And invariably, you see a tear,

आणि न चुकता तुम्हाला त्याच्या डोळ्यात अश्रू दिसत असे,

because the penny has dropped.

He realizes that to succeed,

he does not have to be a "professional,"

he does not have to cut out his emotions,

he has to include all these people

in his world to succeed, to make them happy,

to make the boss happy, to make everyone happy.

The customer is happy, because the customer is God.

ग्राहक खूष राहील कारण, ग्राहक हा देव असतो.

That sensitivity is what we need. Once this belief enters,

आपल्याला संवेदनशीलतेची गरज असते. एकदा ही भावना मनात भिनली,

behavior will happen, business will happen.

की वागणूक बदलते, व्यवसाय आपोआप होतो.

And it has.

आणि असं घडलंय.

So, then we come back to Alexander

आणि आता आपण परत अॅलेक्झांडर कडे येऊ,

and to the gymnosophist.

आणि जिम्नॉसॉफ़िस्टकडे.

And everybody asks me, "Which is the better way, this way or that way?"

And it's a very dangerous question,

because it leads you to the path of fundamentalism and violence.

choose your paradigm.

You see, because both the paradigms are human constructions.

They are cultural creations,

not natural phenomena.

नैसर्गिक रचना नाहीत.

And so the next time you meet someone, a stranger,

Understand that you live in the subjective truth,
