The two brothers one day decided to go on a race,

three times around the world.

Kartikeya leapt on his peacock

કાર્તિકેયે તેના મોર ઉપર સવાર થયો

and flew around the continents

એ ખંડોની આસપાસ

and the mountains and the oceans.

પર્વતોની અને સમુદ્રોની આસપાસ ફર્યો. .

He went around once,

તે એક પ્રદક્ષિણા ફર્યો,

he went around twice,

તે બીજી પ્રદક્ષિણા ફર્યો,

he went around thrice.

તેણે ત્રીજી પ્રદક્ષિણા ફરી.

But his brother, Ganesha,

પણ તેનો ભાઈ ગણેશ,

simply walked around his parents

માત્ર તેના માતા-પિતાની આસપાસ ફર્યો

once, twice, thrice,

એક વાર,બે વાર,ત્રણ વાર,

and said, "I won."

અને કહ્યું,"હું જીતી ગયો."

"How come?" said Kartikeya.

કાર્તિકેયે કહ્યું "કઈ રીતે ?"

And Ganesha said,

અને ગણેશે કહ્યું,

"You went around 'the world.'

"તેં 'દુનિયા'ની પ્રદક્ષિણા ફરી

I went around 'my world.'"

મેં 'મારી દુનિયાની" પ્રદક્ષિણા ફરી.

What matters more?

કઈ પ્રદક્ષિણા વધારે મહ્ત્વની છે?"

If you understand the difference between 'the world' and 'my world,'

જો તમને 'દુનિયા' અને 'મારી દુનિયા' વચ્ચેનો તફાવત સમજાશે તો,

you understand the difference between logos and mythos.

તમે તર્ક અને પુરાણી માન્યતા વચ્ચેનો ફર્ક સમજો.

'The world' is objective,

'દુનિયા' વસ્તુપ્રધાન છે,

logical, universal, factual,

તર્ક્પ્રધાન છે.વૈશ્વિક છે.હકીકત છે.

scientific.

વિજ્ઞાનમય છે.

'My world' is subjective.

'મારી દુનિયા' વિષયપ્રધાન છે.

It's emotional. It's personal.

તે સંવેદનામય છે.તે અંગત છે.

It's perceptions, thoughts, feelings, dreams.

તેને દ્રષ્ટિ,વિચારો,લાગણીઓ,સ્વપ્નાઓ છે.

It is the belief system that we carry.

તે એક માન્યતા પદ્ધતિ છે, જેને આપણે અનુસરીએ છીએ.

It's the myth that we live in.

તે એક માન્યતા છે જેમાં આપણે જીવીએ છીએ.

'The world' tells us how the world functions,

'દુનિયા' આપણને વિશ્વનું સંચાલન કઈ રીતે થાય છે.

how the sun rises,

કઈ રીતે સૂર્ય ઉગે છે,

how we are born.

કઈ રીતે આપણો જન્મ થયો તે બતાવે છે.

'My world' tells us why the sun rises,

'મારી દુનિયા' આપણને સૂર્ય શા માટે ઉગે છે,

why we were born.

શા માટે આપણે જન્મ્યા છીએ તે બતાવે છે.

Every culture is trying to understand itself:

દરેક સંસ્કૃતિ પોતાની રીતે સમજવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરે છે,

"Why do we exist?"

"શા માટે આપણું અસ્તિત્વ છે.?"

And every culture comes up with its own understanding of life,

અને દરેક સંસ્કૃતિ જીવન વિશેની પોતાની સમજ સાથે

its own customized version of mythology.

પુરાણશાસ્ત્રોના પોતાના દ્રષ્ટિબિંદુથી કરેલા ભાષાંતર સાથે બહાર ઉભરે છે.

Culture is a reaction to nature,

સંસ્કૃતિ એ પ્રકૃતિની પ્રતિક્રિયા છે.

and this understanding of our ancestors

અને આપણાં પૂર્વજોની આ સમજ

is transmitted generation from generation

એક પેઢીથી બીજી પેઢીમાં પસાર થાય છે

in the form of stories, symbols and rituals,

વાર્તાઓ,સંકેતો અને વિધીઓના રૂપમાં,

which are always indifferent to rationality.

જે હંમેશા સમજદારીથી અલિપ્ત છે.

And so, when you study it, you realize

that different people of the world

have a different understanding of the world.

Different people see things differently --

different viewpoints.

There is my world and there is your world,

એક મારી દુનિયા છે અને એક તમારી દુનિયા છે,

and my world is always better than your world,

અને મારી દુનિયા હમેશા તમારી દુનિયા કરતાં વધુ સુંદર હોય છે.

because my world, you see, is rational

કારણકે મારી દુનિયા,બુદ્ધિગમ્ય છે.

and yours is superstition.

અને તમારી અંધશ્રદ્ધાની છે. .

Yours is faith.

તમારી વિશ્વાસની છે.

Yours is illogical.

તમારી અતાર્કિક છે.

This is the root of the clash of civilizations.

આ જ બંને સંસ્કૃતિઓ વચ્ચેનાં કલહનું મૂળ છે.

It took place, once, in 326 B.C.

તે એકવાર,૩૨૬ બી.સી.માં, થયું હતું .

on the banks of a river called the Indus,

ઇન્ડુસ નામની નદીનાં કાંઠા ઉપર

now in Pakistan.

જે હાલ પાકિસ્તાનમાં છે.

This river lends itself to India's name.

આ નદી જ ઇન્ડિયાનાં નામનો નિર્દેશ કરે છે.

India. Indus.

ઇન્ડિયા.ઇન્ડુસ

Alexander, a young Macedonian,

એક યુવાન મેસેડોનિયન,એલેકઝાન્ડર,

met there what he called a "gymnosophist,"

ત્યાં એક "જીમ્નોસોફીસ્ત"ને મળ્યો,

which means "the naked, wise man."

જેનો અર્થ થાય "નગ્ન ડાહ્યો માણસ."

We don't know who he was.

આપણે જાણતા નથી કે એ કોણ હતાં.

Perhaps he was a Jain monk,

કદાચ એ એક જૈન સંત હશે.

like Bahubali over here,

અહિયાં બાહુબલી છે એવા,

the Gomateshwara Bahubali

ગોમતેશ્વર બાહુબલી.

whose image is not far from Mysore.

જેની મૂર્તિ માયસોરથી બહુ દૂર નથી.

Or perhaps he was just a yogi

અથવા કદાચ એ માત્ર યોગી હશે.

who was sitting on a rock, staring at the sky

જે એક શીલા પર બેસીને આકાશને

and the sun and the moon.

અને સૂર્યને અને ચંદ્રને તાકી રહ્યાં હતાં.

Alexander asked, "What are you doing?"

એલેકઝાન્ડરે પૂછ્યું, "તું શું કરી રહ્યો છે.?"

and the gymnosophist answered,

અને જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તે જવાબ આપ્યો,

"I'm experiencing nothingness."

"હું શૂન્યતાનો અનુભવ કરી રહ્યો છું."

Then the gymnosophist asked,

પછી જીમ્નોફીસ્તે પૂછ્યું,

"What are you doing?"

"તું શું કરી રહ્યો છે?"

and Alexander said, "I am conquering the world."

અને એલેકઝાન્ડરે કહ્યું, "હું દુનિયા જીતી રહ્યો છું."

And they both laughed.

અને તેઓ બંને હસી પડયા.

Each one thought that the other was a fool.

બંને એક બીજાને મૂર્ખ સમજતાં હતા.

The gymnosophist said, "Why is he conquering the world?

જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તે કહ્યું, "શા માટે તેને દુનિયા જીતવી છે?

It's pointless."

તે અર્થ વગરનું છે."

And Alexander thought,

અને એલેકઝાન્ડરે વિચાર્યું,

"Why is he sitting around, doing nothing?

"કશું પણ કર્યાં વીના, એ શા માટે અહીં બેઠો છે?

What a waste of a life."

જિંદગીનો કેવો વ્યર્થ વ્યય કરે છે."

To understand this difference in viewpoints,

આ દ્રષ્ટિકોણ વચ્ચેનો ફર્ક સમજવા,

we have to understand

આપણે સમજવું પડશે

the subjective truth of Alexander --

એલેકઝાન્ડરનું વ્યક્તિલક્ષી સત્ય--

his myth, and the mythology that constructed it.

તેની માન્યતા,અને એ શાસ્ત્રને જેનાથી તે રચાઈ હતી.

Alexander's mother, his parents, his teacher Aristotle

એલેકઝાન્ડરની માતા, તેના પિતા,તેના ગુરુ એરિસ્ટોટલે

told him the story of Homer's "Iliad."

તેને હોમરની "ઈલીયાડ" વાર્તા કહી હતી.

They told him of a great hero called Achilles,

તેમણે મહાન નાયક એકીલીક્સની વાત કહી હતી,

who, when he participated in battle, victory was assured,

જે,યુદ્ધમાં ભાગ લેતો તો, જીત નિશ્ચિત રહેતી,

but when he withdrew from the battle,

પણ જો તે યુદ્ધમાંથી પાછો ફરતો તો,

defeat was inevitable.

હાર ટાળવી અશક્ય રહેતી.

"Achilles was a man who could shape history,

"એકીલીક્સ એ માણસ હતો કે જે ઇતિહાસ ઘડી શકતો,

a man of destiny,

ભાવિનો રચનારો,

and this is what you should be, Alexander."

અને એલેકઝાન્ડર તારે એવા બનવાનું છે."

That's what he heard.

આ તેણે સાંભળ્યું હતું.

"What should you not be?

"તારે શું નથી બનવાનું?

You should not be Sisyphus,

તારે સિસિફસ નથી બનવાનું,

who rolls a rock up a mountain all day

જે એક શીલાને રોજ પર્વત ઉપર ચઢાવે છે

only to find the boulder rolled down at night.

માત્ર એ જોવા કે શીલા રાતનાં ગબડીને પાછી નીચે આવી જાય છે.

Don't live a life which is monotonous,

એવી જિંદગી નહીં જીવતો કે જે

mediocre, meaningless.

સામાન્ય હોય,અર્થ વગરની હોય.

Be spectacular! --

દેદીપ્યમાન બન!--

like the Greek heroes,

ગ્રીક નાયકોની જેમ,

like Jason, who went across the sea

જેસોનની જેમ,જે દરિયાપાર

with the Argonauts and fetched the Golden Fleece.

એર્ગોનોટસ સાથે ગયો અને સોનેરી ખાલ લઇ આવ્યો.

Be spectacular like Theseus,

થેસ્યુસની જેમ દેદીપ્યમાન બન,

who entered the labyrinth and killed the bull-headed Minotaur.

જેણે ભૂલભૂલામણીમાં દાખલ થઇ આખલાના મસ્તકવાળા મીનોટોરનો વધ કર્યો.

When you play in a race, win! --

જયારે પણ હરીફાઈમાં ઉતરો, જીતો|-

because when you win, the exhilaration of victory

કારણકે જયારે તમે જીતો છો, ત્યારે જીતનો ઉલ્લાસ

is the closest you will come to the ambrosia of the gods."

ઈશ્વરનાં અમૃતની એકદમ નજીક તમને લઇ જશે."

Because, you see, the Greeks believed

કારણકે,તું જાણે છે, ગ્રીક્સના લોકો માને છે કે,

you live only once,

તમે માત્ર એક જ વાર જીવો છો,

and when you die, you have to cross the River Styx.

અને જયારે મરી જાવ છો,ત્યારે તમારે સ્ટીક્સ નદીને પાર કરવાની હોય છે.

And if you have lived an extraordinary life,

અને જો તમે અસાધારણ જીવન જીવ્યા હોય તો જ,

you will be welcomed to Elysium,

તમારું મૃત્યુ પછીની ભૂમિમાં સ્વાગત થશે.

or what the French call "Champs-Élysées" --

અથવા તો ફ્રેંચ જેને "ચેમ્પસ-એલીસીસ "--

(Laughter) --

(હાસ્ય)---

the heaven of the heroes.

નાયકોનું સ્વર્ગ.

But these are not the stories that the gymnosophist heard.

પણ આ બધી વાર્તાઓ જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તે સાંભળી નહોતી.

He heard a very different story.

તેમણે એકદમ જુદી વાર્તા સાંભળી હતી.

He heard of a man called Bharat,

તેમણે ભરત વિશે સાંભળ્યું હતું,

after whom India is called Bhārata.

કે જેના નામથી ઇન્ડિયા પછીથી ભારત કહેવાયું.

Bharat also conquered the world.

ભરતે પણ આખી દુનિયા જીતી હતી.

And then he went to the top-most peak

અને પછી તે વિશ્વનાં કેન્દ્રમાં રહેલા

of the greatest mountain of the center of the world

સહુથી ઉંચા પર્વત ઉપર ગયો

called Meru.

જે મેરુ નામે જાણીતો છે.

And he wanted to hoist his flag to say,

અને ત્યાં તે એનો ઝંડો ફરકાવવા ચાહતો હતો ને કહેવા માંગતો હતો,

"I was here first."

"હું અહિયાં સહુથી પ્રથમ આવ્યો છું."

But when he reached the mountain peak,

પણ જયારે તે પર્વતની ટોચ પર પહોંચ્યો,

he found the peak covered with countless flags

ત્યારે તેણે ટોચને અસંખ્ય ઝંડાઓથી ભરેલી જોઈ

of world-conquerors before him,

એનાથી પહેલાં જેમણે દુનિયા જીતી હતી,

each one claiming "'I was here first' ...

અને બધાં જ દાવો કરતાં હતાં '"હું અહીં પ્રથમ છું'---

that's what I thought until I came here."

જે મેં પણ અહીં આવતા પહેલાં વિચાર્યું હતું."

And suddenly, in this canvas of infinity,

અને અચાનક, આ અનંતના ફલક પર,

Bharat felt insignificant.

ભરતને તુચ્છતા લાગી.

This was the mythology of the gymnosophist.

આ જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તનું પુરાણશાસ્ત્ર હતું.

You see, he had heroes, like Ram -- Raghupati Ram

તમે જોશો,કે તેની પાસે રામ--રઘુપતિ રામ

and Krishna, Govinda Hari.

કૃષ્ણ,ગોવિંદ હરિ જેવા નાયકો હતાં.

But they were not two characters on two different adventures.

પણ તેઓ બે જુદી સાહસકથાનાં બે પાત્રો ન હતાં.

They were two lifetimes of the same hero.

તેઓ એક જ નાયકની બે જીવનગાથા હતી.

When the Ramayana ends the Mahabharata begins.

જ્યાં રામાયણનો અંત થાય છે, મહાભારતની શરૂઆત થાય છે.

When Ram dies, Krishna is born.

જયારે રામ મૃત્યુ પામે છે, કૃષ્ણનો જન્મ થાય છે.

When Krishna dies, eventually he will be back as Ram.

જયારે કૃષ્ણ મૃત્યુ પામે છે, સ્વાભાવિક રીતે તે રામ તરીકે પાછા આવશે.

You see, the Indians also had a river

તમે જોશો,ભારત પાસે એક નદી છે

that separates the land of the living from the land of the dead.

જે જીવનભૂમિ અને મૃત્યુભૂમિને અલગ પાડે છે.

But you don't cross it once.

પણ તમે એને માત્ર એક વાર પસાર નથી કરતાં.

You go to and fro endlessly.

તમે અનંત વાર આવ-જા કરો છો.

It was called the Vaitarani.

તે વૈતરણી નદી છે.

You go again and again and again.

તમે ફરીને ફરી પસાર થાવ છો.

Because, you see,

કારણકે,તમે જોશો,

nothing lasts forever in India, not even death.

ભારતમાં કશું પણ કાયમ નથી રહેતું, મૃત્યુ પણ નહીં.

And so, you have these grand rituals

અને તેથી,તમારી પાસે આવા કર્મકાંડ છે

where great images of mother goddesses are built

જ્યાં દેવી માતાની વિરાટ પ્રતિમાઓ બનાવાય છે

and worshiped for 10 days ...

દસ દિવસ તેની પૂજા થાય છે---

And what do you do at the end of 10 days?

અને દસ દિવસ પછી તેનું તમે શું કરો છો?

You dunk it in the river.

તમે તેનું નદીમાં વિસર્જન કરો છો.

Because it has to end.

કારણકે તેનો કોઈ અંત નથી.

And next year, she will come back.

અને આવતા વર્ષે,તે ફરી પાછા આવશે.

What goes around always comes around,

જે જાય છે તે ફરીને પાછું આવે જ છે.

and this rule applies not just to man,

અને આ નિયમ માત્ર માણસને જ નથી લાગુ પડતો,

but also the gods.

પણ ભગવાનને ય લાગુ પડે છે.

You see, the gods

તમે જોશો,ભગવાનને

have to come back again and again and again

ફરી ફરીને પાછાં આવવું પડે છે

as Ram, as Krishna.

રામની જેમ,કૃષ્ણની જેમ.

Not only do they live infinite lives,

તેઓ માત્ર અસંખ્ય જીવન નથી જીવ્યા,

but the same life is lived infinite times

પણ એકની એક જિંદગી યે અસંખ્ય વાર જીવ્યા છે

till you get to the point of it all.

જ્યાં સુધી તેના ચરમબિંદુએ પહોંચ્યા ત્યાં સુધી.

"Groundhog Day."

"ગ્રાઉન્ડહોગ દિવસ"

Two different mythologies.

બે અલગ પૌરાણીક કથા છે.

Which is right?

કઈ સાચી છે?

Two different mythologies, two different ways of looking at the world.

બે અલગ પુરાણ કથા છે, દુનિયાને જોવાના બે અલગ રસ્તાઓ છે.

One linear, one cyclical.

એક રેખાંકિત,એક ચક્રીય.

One believes this is the one and only life.

એક માને છે કે આ જિંદગી માત્ર એક જ વાર મળે છે.

The other believes this is one of many lives.

બીજા માને છે કે અનેક જિંદગીમાંની આ એક જિંદગી છે.

And so, the denominator of Alexander's life was one.

અને આમ એલેકઝાન્ડરની જિંદગીનો ભાગાંક હંમેશા એક જ હતો.

So, the value of his life was the sum total

તેથી,તેની જિંદગીનું મૂલ્ય એ સરવાળો હતો

of his achievements.

તેને પ્રાપ્ત કરેલી સિદ્ધિઓનો.

The denominator of the gymnosophist's life was infinity.

જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તની જિંદગીનો ભાગાંક અનંત હતો.

So, no matter what he did,

તેથી,તે કઈ પણ કરે,

it was always zero.

પરિણામ હંમેશા શૂન્ય જ હશે.

And I believe it is this mythological paradigm

અને હું માનું છું કે

that inspired Indian mathematicians

જેણે ભારતના ગણિતશાસ્ત્રીઓને પ્રેરણા આપી હશે

to discover the number zero.

શૂન્યના આવિષ્કારની.

Who knows?

કોને ખબર છે?

And that brings us to the mythology of business.

અને તે આપણને ધંધાના પુરાણ તરફ લઇ જાય છે.

If Alexander's belief influenced his behavior,

જો એલેકઝાન્ડરની માન્યતાની તેના વર્તાવ પર અસર થઇ હશે,

if the gymnosophist's belief influences his behavior,

જો જીમ્નોસોફીસ્તની માન્યતાની તેના વર્તાવ પર અસર થઇ હશે,

then it was bound to influence the business they were in.

તો તેઓ જે પણ ધંધામાં હશે, એના પર એની ચોક્કસ છાપ વર્તાશે,

You see, what is business

તમે જુઓ, ધંધો એ શું છે

but the result of how the market behaves

બીજું કંઈ નહીં પણ બજારની ચાલ કેવી છે

and how the organization behaves?

અને સંસ્થાઓ તેને કઈ રીતે ચલાવે છે?

And if you look at cultures around the world,

અને જો તમે દુનિયાની ચારે બાજુની સંસ્કૃતિને જોશો,

all you have to do is understand the mythology

તમારે તેની માન્યતાઓને સમજવી પડશે

and you will see how they behave and how they do business.

અને તમે જોશો કે તેઓ કઈ રીતે વર્તે છે અને કઈ રીતે ધંધો કરે છે.

Take a look.

જરા જુઓ.

If you live only once, in one-life cultures around the world,

you will see an obsession with binary logic,

absolute truth, standardization,

absoluteness, linear patterns in design.

સંપૂર્ણ,રેખામય રચનાત્મક ચિત્રઘટના.

But if you look at cultures which have cyclical

પણ જો તમે એ સંસ્કૃતિ જોશો કે જે ચક્રીય છે

and based on infinite lives, you will see a comfort with fuzzy logic,

અને અનંત જીવન પર આધારિત છે, તમે ઝાંખા તર્ક સાથે આરામ અનુભવશો,

with opinion,

મત સાથે,

with contextual thinking,

સંદર્ભીય વિચાર સાથે,

with everything is relative, sort of --

દરેક વસ્તુ એક બીજાથી જોડાયેલી છે, જેવી રીતે--

mostly.

You look at art. Look at the ballerina,

how linear she is in her performance.

And then look at the Indian classical dancer,

the Kuchipudi dancer, the Bharatanatyam dancer,

And then look at business.

Standard business model:

vision, mission, values, processes.

Sounds very much like the journey through

જાણે કે પ્રવાસ

the wilderness to the promised land,

મેદાનમાંથી પસાર થઇ ખાત્રીમય ભૂમિ તરફનો,

with the commandments held by the leader.

ગુરુઓએ આપેલી દૈવી આજ્ઞાઓ સાથે.

And if you comply, you will go to heaven.

અને જો તમે તે પુરી કરશો,તો સ્વર્ગમાં જશો.

But in India there is no "the" promised land.

પણ ભારતમાં કોઈ એક ખાત્રીમય ભૂમિ નથી.

There are many promised lands,

ઘણી બધી ખાત્રીમય ભુમીઓ છે,

depending on your station in society,

સમાજમાં તમારાં સ્થાન પર આધારિત,

depending on your stage of life.

તમારાં જિંદગીના તબક્કા પર આધારિત.

You see, businesses are not run as institutions,

તમે જુઓ,ધંધાઓ સંસ્થાકીય રીતે નથી ચલાવાતા,

by the idiosyncrasies of individuals.

પોતપોતાની શૈલીઓ દ્વારા.

It's always about taste.

You see, Indian music, for example,

દાખલા તરીકે,તમે ભારતીય સંગીત,જોશો તો,

does not have the concept of harmony.

ત્યાં સ્વરસંવાદીતાની કલ્પના નથી .

There is no orchestra conductor.

ત્યાં કોઈ સમૂહવાદ્ય-ગીત વાહક નથી હોતો.

There is one performer standing there, and everybody follows.

ત્યાં એક કલાકાર ઉભો હોઈ છે, અને બધાં તેને અનુસરતા હોઈ છે.

And you can never replicate that performance twice.

અને તમે તમારાં કળા પ્રદર્શનની ક્યારેય બીજી વાર નકલ ન કરી શકો.

It is not about documentation and contract.

તે દસ્તાવેજીકરણ અને કરાર વિશે નથી.

It's about conversation and faith.

And people are okay with it.

And then globalization is taking place.

The demands of modern institutional thinking is coming in.

આધુનિક સંસ્થાકીય વિચારધારાની માંગણીઓ આવવા લાગી.

Which is rooted in one-life culture.

જેના મૂળમાં એક જીવનની સંસ્કૃતિ હતી.

And a clash is going to take place,

અને વિખવાદ થવાનો જ છે,

like on the banks of the Indus.

જે રીતે ઇન્ડુસ નદીનાં કાંઠે થયો હતો.

It is bound to happen.

આ થવાનું જ છે.

I have personally experienced it. I'm trained as a medical doctor.

મેં એનો અંગત અનુભવ કર્યો છે. હું તબીબી ડોક્ટર તરીકે કેળવાયલો છું.

I did not want to study surgery. Don't ask me why.

મારે શસ્ત્રક્રિયા ભણવી ન હતી.શા માટે તે નહીં પૂછતા.

I love mythology too much.

મને પૌરાણિક કથાશાસ્ત્ર બહુ ગમે છે.

મારે પૌરાણિક કશાસ્ત્ર ભણવું હતું. પણ તમે તે ભણી શકો એવી કોઈ જગ્યા નથી.

I wanted to learn mythology. But there is nowhere you can study.

So, I had to teach it to myself.

તેથી, મારે જ મારી જાતને તે ભણાવવી પડી.

And mythology does not pay, well, until now.

અને પૌરાણિક કથાશાસ્ત્રથી કંઈ વળતર મળતું નથી.ખેર: અત્યાર સુધી.

So, I had to take up a job. And I worked in the pharma industry.

And I worked in the healthcare industry.

I would give my viewpoints to people.

હું મારાં દ્રષ્ટિકોણ લોકોને બતાવતો હતો.

But nobody was interested in listening to it,

you see, until I met Kishore Biyani of the Future group.

You see, he has established the largest retail chain, called Big Bazaar.

તમે જોશો,તેને સહુથી મોટી છુટક વેચાણની શૃંખલા બીગ બજારની સ્થાપના કરી.

And there are more than 200 formats,

અને તેના બસોથી વધારે કેન્દ્રો

across 50 cities and towns of India.

ભારતનાં પચાસ શહેરો અને નગરોમાં છે.

And he was dealing with diverse and dynamic markets.

And he knew very intuitively,

that best practices,

So, he had asked me to be the Chief Belief Officer, and said,

"All I want to do is align belief."

Sounds so simple.

બહુ સહેલું લાગે છે.

But belief is not measurable.

પણ વિશ્વાસનું કોઈ પ્રમાણ નથી હોતું.

You can't measure it. You can't manage it.

તમે તેને માપી નથી શકતાં તમે તેને જાળવી નથી શકતાં.

So, how do you construct belief?

તો,વિશ્વાસ કેવી રીતે બાંધવો?

How do you enhance the sensitivity of people to Indian-ness.

લોકોની લાગણીને ભારતીયતા તરફ કઈ રીતે વધારશો.

Even if you are Indian, it is not very explicit, it is not very obvious.

તમે ભારતીય હોવ તો પણ,તે એટલું સ્પષ્ટ નથી,તે બહુ સ્વાભાવિક નથી.

So, I tried to work on the standard model of culture,

તેથી મેં સંસ્કૃતિના સ્થાપિત નમુના પર કામ કર્યું,

જેમાં ધર્મની ક્રિયા સંબંધી, ચિહ્નો સંબંધી વાર્તાઓ ઘડવાની.

which is, develop stories, symbols and rituals.

And I will share one of the rituals with you.

હું તમારી સાથે એક ધાર્મિક ક્રિયા વિશે વાત કરીશ.

You see it is based on the Hindu ritual of Darshan.

તે હિંદુઓની દર્શન વિધિ પર આધારિત છે.

Hindus don't have the concept of commandments.

હિંદુઓમાં દૈવી આજ્ઞાઓનો ધારો નથી.

તેથી,તમે જિંદગીમાં જે કરો છો તેમાં કંઈ સાચું કે ખોટું નથી.

So, there is nothing right or wrong in what you do in life.

So, you're not really sure how you stand in front of God.

તેથી,તમને ચોક્કસ ખબર નથી કે તમે કઈ રીતે ભગવાન સામે ઉભા છો.

So, when you go to the temple, all you seek is an audience with God.

તેથી,તમે જયારે મંદિરમાં જાવ છો, તમે ભગવાનને શ્રોતા તરીકે ગણો છો.

You want to see God.

તમારે ભગવાનને જોવા છે.

And you want God to see you, and hence the gods have very large eyes,

અને તમે ઈચ્છો છો કે ભગવાન તમને જુએ, અને તેથી ભગવાનને બહુ મોટી આંખો છે,

large unblinking eyes,

મોટી અપલક આંખો,

sometimes made of silver,

ક્યારેક ચાંદીની બનેલી,

so they look at you.

જેથી તે તમને જોઈ શકે.

Because you don't know whether you're right or wrong, and so all you seek

is divine empathy.

"Just know where I came from, why I did the Jugaad."

"માત્ર જાણો કે હું ક્યાંથી આવ્યો છું, શા માટે મેં આ ખેલ કર્યો છે.

"Why did I do the setting,

"શા માટે મેં આ ગોઠવણી કરી,

why I don't care for the processes. Just understand me, please."

શા માટે મેં ક્રિયાની પરવા ન કરી. મને મહેરબાની કરીને સમજવાની કોશિશ કરો."

And based on this, we created a ritual for leaders.

અને આના પર આધારિત, આપણે નેતાઓ માટે કર્મકાંડ નક્કી કર્યાં.

After a leader completes his training and is about to take over the store,

નેતા જયારે તેની તાલીમ પૂરી કરે છે અને તેની દુકાન પર અધિકાર લે છે,

we blindfold him, we surround him with the stakeholders,

આપણે આંધળો વિશ્વાસ મુકીએ છીએ, તેને માનનારાઓથી,

the customer, his family, his team, his boss.

ગ્રાહકોથી,તેના કુટુંબથી,તેની ટુકડીથી, તેના શેઠથી તેને ઘેરી વળીએ છીએ.

You read out his KRA, his KPI, you give him the keys,

તેના કેઆરએ,તેના કેપિઆય ગણી લઈએ છીએ, તેને ચાવીઓ આપી દઈએ છીએ

and then you remove the blindfold.

અને પછી આંધળોપાટો દુર કરીએ છીએ.

And invariably, you see a tear,

અને મોટેભાગે આપણે રડવું પડે છે,

because the penny has dropped.

કારણકે પૈસા પડી ગયા હોઈ છે.

He realizes that to succeed,

તેને સમજાય છે કે,સફળ થવા માટે,

he does not have to be a "professional,"

તેણે "ધંધાદારી" નથી બનવાનું ,

he does not have to cut out his emotions,

he has to include all these people

The customer is happy, because the customer is God.

ગ્રાહક ખુશ થશે,કારણકે ગ્રાહક એ ભગવાન છે.

That sensitivity is what we need. Once this belief enters,

આ સંવેદના આપણને જોઈએ છે. એક વાર આ વિશ્વાસ પ્રવેશશે,

behavior will happen, business will happen.

ચલણ પણ થશે,ધંધો પણ થશે.

And it has.

અને થયો છે.

So, then we come back to Alexander

તો,આપણે પાછા વળીએ એલેકઝાન્ડર

and to the gymnosophist.

અને જીમ્નોસોફીસ્ત તરફ.

And everybody asks me, "Which is the better way, this way or that way?"

અને બધા મને પૂછે છે,"કયો રસ્તો વધારે સારો છે,આ રસ્તો કે પેલો રસ્તો?"

And it's a very dangerous question,

અને આ એક બહુ ખતરનાક પ્રશ્ન છે,

because it leads you to the path of fundamentalism and violence.

કારણકે તે તમને મૂળભુતતા અને હિંસાના માર્ગ ભણી દોરી જાય છે.

So, I will not answer the question.

What I will give you is an Indian answer,

They are cultural creations,

not natural phenomena.

And so the next time you meet someone, a stranger,

Understand that you live in the subjective truth,
