is that it is time for us to reclaim

Peace is not "Kumbaya, my Lord."

শান্তি মানে শুধু “Kumbaya, my Lord.” না।

Peace is not the dove and the rainbow --

শান্তি মানে শুধু কবুতর আর রঙধনু নয়-

as lovely as they are.

তারা যতই আকর্ষণীয় হোক না কেন।

When I see the symbols

যখন আমি প্রতীক দেখি,

of the rainbow and the dove,

রঙধনু বা কবুতরের

I think of personal serenity.

তখন আমি ব্যক্তিগত প্রশান্তির কথা চিন্তা করি।

I think of meditation.

আমি ধ্যানের কথা চিন্তা করি।

I do not think

এগুলোর মাধ্যমে,

about what I consider to be peace,

which is sustainable peace

with justice and equality.

It is a sustainable peace

in which the majority of people

যেখানে এই দুনিয়ার

on this planet

have access to enough resources

মর্যাদাপূর্ণ জীবন যাপনের লক্ষ্যে প্রয়োজনীয়

to live dignified lives,

সবধরণের উপকরণের সহজপ্রাপ্যতা থাকবে।

where these people have enough access

থাকবে। যেখানে এই মানুষগুলোর কাছে সহজপ্রাপ্য হবে

to education

and health care,

so that they can live in freedom from want

and freedom from fear.

This is called human security.

And I am not a complete pacifist

like some of my really, really heavy-duty,

I understand that humans

It is not getting other countries

to arm themselves to the teeth

with the weapons that we produce

যেগুলো আমরা তৈরি করি

and we sell them.

আর তাদের কাছে বিক্রি করি।

It is using that money more rationally

নিরাপত্তা মানে এইসব টাকাগুলো খুবই যৌক্তিকভাবে ব্যবহার করা যেন,

to make the countries of the world secure,

সত্যিকার অর্থেই পৃথিবীর দেশগুলোকে,

to make the people of the world secure.

পৃথিবীর মানুষগুলোকে নিরাপদ করে তোলা যায়।

I was thinking about

আমি ভাবছিলাম,

the recent ongoings

কংগ্রেসের চলমান

in Congress,

সাম্প্রতিক অধিবেশনের কথা

where the president is offering

8.4 billion dollars

to try to get the START vote.

I certainly support the START vote.

In global terms, it's a little bit of money.

It is saving the tigers.

It is having access

to medical equipment

that can actually tell who does have cancer.

It is all of those things.

এটা এরকম যে কোন কিছুই হতে পারে।

It is using our money for all of those things.

এটা টাকাগুলোকে এইসব কাজে ব্যায় করার প্রশ্ন।

It is about action.

এটা সত্যিকার অর্থেই সক্রিয় হবার প্রশ্ন।

I was in Hiroshima

আমি গিয়েছিলাম হিরোশিমায়।

a couple of weeks ago,

কয়েক সপ্তাহ আগে

and His Holiness --

আর সেখানে মহামান্য দালাই লামা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

we're sitting there in front of thousands of people in the city,

and there were about eight of us Nobel laureates.

And he's a bad guy. He's like a bad kid in church.

We're staring at everybody, waiting our turn to speak,

and he leans over to me, and he says,

a couple of days ago.

As most of you know,

she's a hero for democracy in her country, Burma.

You probably also know

that she has spent 15 of the last 20 years

to bring about democracy.

She was just released a couple of weeks ago,

and we're very concerned to see how long she will be free,

But I talked to her for a range of issues.

But one thing that I want to say,

She said, "You know, we have a long road to go

to finally get democracy in my country.

But I don't believe in hope

I don't believe in the hope of change,

unless we take action

Here's another woman hero of mine.

She's my friend, Dr. Shirin Ebadi,

She has been in exile

A year and a half --

on behalf of the other women in her country.

2004 Peace laureate.

They call her the "Tree Lady,"

but she's more than the Tree Lady.

Working for peace

is very creative.

It's hard work every day.

When she was planting those trees,

I don't think most people understand

People could not gather

But if they were together planting trees for the environment,

it was okay --

But it's not just iconic women

it is other women in the world

The Women's League of Burma,

came together because there's strength in numbers.

Working together is what changes our world.

একসঙ্গে কাজ করেই আমরা এই দুনিয়ার বদল ঘটাতে পারি।

The Million Signatures Campaign

of women inside Burma

বার্মার নারীরা

working together to change human rights,

সম্মিলিতভাবে গড়ে তুলেছে, সেখানকার মানবাধিকার পরিস্থিতি পরিবর্তনের জন্য।

to bring democracy to that country.

তাদের দেশে গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য

When one is arrested and taken to prison,

another one comes out and joins the movement,

recognizing that if they work together,

they will ultimately bring change

I'll tell you the quick story.

An IRA driver was shot,

and his car plowed into people

on the side of the street.

There was a mother and three children.

The children were killed on the spot.

It was Mairead's sister.

Instead of giving in

to grief, depression, defeat

in the face of that violence,

Mairead hooked up with Betty --

a staunch Protestant and a staunch Catholic --

and they took to the streets

to say, "No more violence."

And they were able to get

tens of thousands of, primarily, women, some men,

She is now running for president.

She is educating the indigenous people of her country

তিনি তাঁর দেশের আদিবাসী মানুষদের ধারণা দিচ্ছেন যে,

about what it means to be a democracy,

গণতন্ত্র বলতে আসলে কী বোঝায়,

about how you bring democracy to the country,

about educating, about how to vote --

but that democracy is not just about voting;

it's about being an active citizen.

That's what I got stuck doing --

the landmine campaign.

One of the things that made this campaign work

কয়েকটি ব্যাপারের মধ্যে একটা, যে কারণে এই ক্যাম্পেইনটা কাজ করে যাচ্ছে,

is because we grew from two NGOs

সেটা হলো আমরা মাত্র দুইটা এনজিও থেকে

to thousands

বিশ্বের ৯০টি দেশের হাজারটা

in 90 countries around the world,

এনজিওতে বেড়ে উঠেছি।

working together in common cause to ban landmines.

ল্যান্ডমাইন নিষিদ্ধ করার সাধারণ দাবিতে আমরা একসঙ্গে কাজ করছি।

Some of the people who worked in our campaign

এমনও মানুষ আছেন যারা আমাদের এই ক্যাম্পেইনে কাজ করেছে

could only work maybe an hour a month.

প্রতিদিন একঘন্টা, একমাস ধরে।

They could maybe volunteer that much.

তারা হয়ত এটুকু স্বেচ্ছাশ্রমই দিতে পারত।

There were others, like myself,

who were full-time.

But it was the actions, together, of all of us

that brought about that change.

In my view, what we need today

is people getting up

to reclaim the meaning of peace.

It's not a dirty word.

It's hard work every single day.

আর সেগুলো কার্যকর করার জন্য

and volunteered

স্বেচ্ছাশ্রম দেয়,

as much time as we could,

যে যেটুকু সময় পারে,

we would change this world,

তাহলে আমরা এই দুনিয়াটা বদলাতে পারব।

we would save this world.

আমরা এই দুনিয়াটাকে রক্ষা রতে পারব।

And we can't wait for the other guy. We have to do it ourselves.

আর আমরা অন্য কারও জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে পারি না। আমাদের নিজেদেরই এটা করতে হবে।
