In the next six minutes that you will listen to me,

while delivering their babies:

one, because of a severe complication;

second, because she will be a teenager

والثانية، ستكون في سن المراهقة

and her body will not be prepared for birth;

but the third, only because of lack of access to basic clean tools

أما الثالثة، لعدم تمكنها من الحصول على الأدوات الأساسية الصحية النظيفة

at the time of childbirth.

She will not be alone.

Over one million mothers and babies die every single year

حيثُ يموتُ أكثر من مليون أم وطفل كل عام في دول العالم النامي

in the developing world,

only because of lack of access to basic cleanliness

بسبب عدم توفر النظافة الأساسية فقط أثناء ولادة أطفالهن.

while giving birth to their babies.

My journey began on a hot summer afternoon

بدأت رحلتي في ما بعد ظهر يوم صيف حار، في الهند عام 2008

in India in 2008,

when after a day of meeting women and listening to their needs,

وبعد يوم كامل من مقابلة النساء والاستماع لاحتياجاتهن،

I landed in a thatched hut with a midwife.

انتهى بي الأمر في كوخٍ من القش مع قابلة.

As a mother, I was very curious on how she delivered babies in her house.

وكأم، كنت في غاية الفضول لمعرفة كيف تقوم بتوليد الأطفال في منزلها.

After a deep and engaging conversation with her

وبعد حوار عميق شيّق معها

on how she considered it a profound calling to do what she was doing,

حول مدى اعتبارها لما تقوم به على أنه عمل غاية في الأهمية،

I asked her a parting question:

سألتها سؤالًا أخيرًا: هل تمتلكين الأدوات اللازمة لتوليد الأطفال؟

Do you have the tools that you need to deliver the babies?

I got to see her tool.

وتمكنت من رؤية أداتها.

"This is what I use to separate the mother and the baby," she said.

قالت، "هذا ما أستخدمه في عملية فصل الوالدة عن المولود".

Unsure of how to react, I held this agricultural tool in my hand in shock.

ولم أكن متأكدة من ردة فعلي، وأمسكت بصدمة هذه الأداة الزراعية في يدي.

I took a picture of this, hugged her and walked away.

والتقطتُ صورة لها، وحضنتُ القابلة وغادرت.

My mind was flooded with reflections of my own infection

وتذكرتُ انعكاسات الماضي والعدوى التي ألمّت بي شخصيًا

that I had to struggle with for a year past childbirth

والتي اضطررتُ لمواجتها لعام كامل بعد ولادتي رغم الحصول على أفضل رعاية طبية

despite having access to the best medical care,

and memories of my conversation with my father,

وتذكرتُ أيضًا حديثي مع والدي الذي فقد والدته أثناء ولادته.

who had lost his mom to childbirth,

on how he thought his life would be so different

وكيف اعتقد ان حياته ستكون مختلفة تمامًا

if she would have been just next to him growing up.

لو كانت والدته موجودة بجانبه في جميع مراحل حياته.

As a product developer, I started my process of research.

وكمطورة سلع ومنتجات، بدأت في عملية البحث.

I was very excited to find that there was a product out there

وكنت سعيدة جدًا لمعرفة أن هناك منتجًا يسمى"حقيبة أدوات الولادة الصحية".

called the Clean Birth Kit.

But I just couldn't buy one for months.

ولكن لم يكن بمقدوري اقتناء واحدة لأشهر.

They were only assembled based on availability of funding.

إذ يتم تجميعها فقط في حال توفر التمويل اللازم.

Finally, when I got my hands on one, I was in shock again.

وأخيرًا، وعندما تمكنت من اقتناء واحدة، صدمتُ مجددًا.

I would never use these tools to deliver my baby, I thought.

وقلت في نفسي، لن أستخدم هذه الأدوات للإنجاب على الإطلاق،

But to confirm my instincts, I went back to the women,

ولكن ولإثبات ردة فعلي الفطرية الطبيعية، عدتُ إلى النساء،

some of whom had the experience of using this product.

Lo and behold, they had the same reaction and more.

ويا للعجب! كان لديهن نفس ردة الفعل وأكثر.

The women said they would rather deliver on a floor

وقالت النساء أنهن سيفضلّن الإنجاب على الأرض

than on a plastic sheet that smeared blood all over.

عوضًا عن استخدام ملاية بلاستيكية تنثر الدماء في كل مكان.

They were absolutely right -- it would cause more infection.

وكنّ على حق تمامًا -- ستسببُ هذه الأدوات المزيد من العدوى

The thread provided was a highway to bacterial infection

كان الخيط المتوفر بمثابة طريق سريع للعدوى البكتيرية

through the baby's umbilical cord,

عبر الحبل السري للمولود

and the blade used was the kind that men used for shaving,

وكانت الشفرة المستخدمة من النوع الذي يستخدمه الرجال للحلاقة

and they did not want it anywhere close to them.

ولم يرغبن في تواجد هذا المنتج في متناول أيديهن.

There was no incentive for anybody to redesign this product,

لم يكن هناك حافز لأي أحد ليقوم بإعادة تصميم هذا المنتج،

because it was based on charity.

لأنه قائمٌ على مبدأ الصدقة.

The women were never consulted in this process.

ولم يتم مشورة النساء في عملية تصميم هذا المنتج.

And to my surprise, the need was not only in homes

ولدهشتي، لم تكن الحاجة إليه في المنازل فقط

but also in institutional settings with high-volume births.

وإنما في الأوساط المؤسـسية ذات المعدلات المرتفعة في عمليات الولادة.

Situations in remote areas were even more daunting.

وكانت الظروف في المناطق النائية أكثر صعوبة وتحديًا

This had to change.

وحان الوقت لهذا الأمر أن يتغير.

I made this my area of focus.

فقمت بتبني هذا المجال وجعله نصب اهتمامي.

I started the design process by collecting feedback,

وبدأت في عملية التصميم من خلال جمع الآراء وتقييم ردود الفعل وتطوير النماذج الأساسية

developing prototypes

and engaging with various stakeholders researching global protocols.

ومشاركة العديد من أصحاب المصلحة والبحث في البروتوكولات العالمية.

With every single prototype, we went back to the women

ومع تصميم كل نموذج، كنا نعودُ إلى النساء

to ensure that we had a product for them.

لضمان أنه لدينا المنتج المناسب لهن.

What I learned through this process was that these women,

وكان ما تعلمته خلال هذه التجربة أن هؤلاء النساء رغم فقرهن الشديد

despite their extreme poverty,

placed great value on their health and well-being.

إلا أنهن وضعن أهمية عظيمة تجاه صحتهن ورفاهيتهن.

They were absolutely not poor in mind.

ولم يكنّ أبدًا فقيرات في التفكير.

As with all of us, they would appreciate a well-designed product

وكما هو حالنا جميعًا، سيقدّرن منتجًا مصممًا بشكل جيد

developed for their needs.

تمّ تطويره ليتناسب مع احتياجاتهن.

After many iterations working with experts,

وبعد العديد من تكرار العمل مع الخبراء

medical health professionals

والمهنيين في مجال الطب والصحة،

and the women themselves,

والنساء أنفسهن.

I should say it was not an easy process at all,

أعترفُ بأن الأمر لم يكن سهلًا على الإطلاق، ولكن كان لدينا تصميم بسيط جميل.

but we had a simple and beautiful design.

For a dollar more than what the existing product was offered for,

وبإضافة دولار واحد لسعر المنتج المتوفر بثلاثة دولارات، تمكنا من تقديم "جانما"،

at three dollars, we were able to deliver "janma,"

a clean birth kit in a purse.

وهي عبارة عن مجموعة أدوات ولادة صحية نظيفة داخل حقيبة.

Janma, meaning "birth," contained a blood-absorbing sheet

وتعني جانما "الولادة"، تتضمن ملاية لامتصاص الدم لتوليد النساء.

for the woman to give birth on,

a surgical scalpel, a cord clamp, a bar of soap, a pair of gloves

ومشرط جراحي، ومشبك للحبل السري، قطعة من الصابون، وزوج من القفازات

and the first cloth to wipe the baby clean.

وقطعة من القماش لتنظيف المولود.

All this came packaged in a beautiful purse

وتم تعبئة جميع هذه الأدوات داخل حقيبة يد جميلة،

that was given to the mother as a gift after all her hard work,

التي تم اعطاؤها للأم كهدية بعد ولادتها الشاقة،

that she carried home with pride as a symbol of prosperity.

وتعود بها إلى المنزل بفخر وكرمز للإزدهار.

One woman reacted to this gift.

ردت إحداهن على الهدية

She said, "Is this really mine? Can I keep it?"

وقالت، "هل هذه حقًا لي؟ هل أستطيع الإحتفاظ بها؟"

The other one said, "Will you give me a different color

وقالت أخرى، "هل ستعطيني حقيبة بلونٍ مختلف عند ولادة طفلي القادم"

when I have my next baby?"

(Laughter)

Better yet, a woman expressed that this was the first purse

والأفضل من ذلك، أعربت إحدى النساء بأن هذه الحقيبة هي الأولى

that she had ever owned in her life.

التي تمتلكها طوال حياتها.

The kit, aside from its symbolism and its simplicity,

هذه الحقيببة وبصرف النظر عن رمزيتها وبساطتها

is designed to follow globally recommended medical protocol

تم تصميمها امتثالاً لبروتوكول طبي موصى به عالميًا

and serves as a behavior-change tool to follow steps one after the other.

وتخدم كأداة لتغيير السلوك وتتبع المراحل، مرحلة تلو الأخرى.

It can not only be used in homes, but also in institutional settings.

إذ أنها ليست معدة للاستخدام المنزلي فقط، وإنما في البيئات المؤسسية أيضاً.

To date, our kit has impacted over 600,000 mothers and babies

وحتى الآن، أثرت مجموعة الأدوات في حياة أكثر من حوالي 600,000 أم وطفل

around the world.

في جميع أنحاء العالم.

It's a humbling experience to watch these numbers grow,

وإنها تجربة متواضعة لرؤية تزايد هذه الأرقام

and I cannot wait until we reach a hundred million.

But women's health issues do not end here.

There are thousands of simple issues that require low-cost interventions.

إذ أن هناك آلاف من المشاكل البسيطة والتي تحتاج الى تدخلات طبية منخفضة التكلفة

We have facts to prove that if we invest in women and girls

لدينا حقائق تثبت أنه إذا استثمرنا في صحة النساء والفتيات

and provide them with better health and well-being,

ووفرنا لهن مناخاً أفضل من الصحة والرفاهية

they will deliver healthier and wealthier and prosperous communities.

سيؤدي ذلك لإعدادهن مجتمعات أكثر صحةً وثراءً وازدهارً.

We have to start by bringing simplicity and dignity to women's health issues:

ويجب أن نبدأ بتوفير البساطة والكرامة في قضايا الصحة النسائية:

from reducing maternal mortality, to breaking taboos,

من خفض معدل وفاة الأمهات إلى كسر المُحرمات

to empowering women to take control of their own lives.

وتمكين النساء من أخذ زمام السيطرة الكاملة على حياتهن.

This is my dream.

هذا هو حلمي.

But it is not possible to achieve it without engaging men and women alike

ولكن من المستحيل إنجاز ذلك دون مساهمة الرجال والنساء على حد سواء

from around the world --

ومن كافة أنحاء العالم --

yes, all of you.

That's how the light gets in."

ومن خلال هذا الصدع يدخل النور.

This is my bit of light.

وهذا جزء بسيط من حلمي.

But we need more light.

لكنا نحتاج لتسليط المزيد من الضوء.

In fact, we need huge spotlights placed in the world of women's health

وفي الحقيقة نحتاج لتسليط أضخم الأضواء على عالم الصحة النسائية

if we need a better tomorrow.

هذا في حال كنا نطمح لغد أفضل.

We should never forget that women are at the center of a sustainable world,

ويجب علينا أن لا ننسى أن النساء هن مركز العالم المستدام،

and we do not exist without them.

ولا وجود لنا دون وجودهن.
