My journey began on a hot summer afternoon

저의 여정은 2008년 뜨거운 어느 오후

in India in 2008,

인도에서 시작했어요.

when after a day of meeting women and listening to their needs,

도움이 필요한 여성들과 이야기를 나눈 다음 날

I landed in a thatched hut with a midwife.

한 조산사와 함께 막사에 내렸어요.

As a mother, I was very curious on how she delivered babies in her house.

저도 같은 엄마라서 그런지 집에서 어떻게 출산을 하는지 궁금했죠.

After a deep and engaging conversation with her

그 조산사가 자신의 일에 얼마나 소명의식을 갖고 있는지

on how she considered it a profound calling to do what she was doing,

깊고 즐겁게 이야기를 나눈 후

I asked her a parting question:

헤어지기 전에 질문을 하나 했어요.

Do you have the tools that you need to deliver the babies?

"출산 도구는 뭐 쓰세요?"라구요.

I got to see her tool.

그렇게 그 조산사의 도구를 보게 됐죠.

"This is what I use to separate the mother and the baby," she said.

"이건 탯줄을 자를 때 사용하는 거예요"라고 하더군요.

Unsure of how to react, I held this agricultural tool in my hand in shock.

너무나 충격적이었던 나머지 멍하니 그 농기구를 들고 있었죠.

I took a picture of this, hugged her and walked away.

이사진을 한 장 찍고는 조산사와 헤어졌어요.

My mind was flooded with reflections of my own infection

저도 예전에 출산할 때 세균감염으로

that I had to struggle with for a year past childbirth

1년 간 고생했던 기억이 막 떠올랐죠.

despite having access to the best medical care,

심지어 의료시설이 굉장히 좋은 곳이었는데도 말이에요.

and memories of my conversation with my father,

그리고 아버지와 나눴던 대화가 떠올랐어요.

who had lost his mom to childbirth,

제 할머니도 아버지를 낳다 돌아가셨거든요.

on how he thought his life would be so different

만약 할머니가 살아계셨으면

if she would have been just next to him growing up.

아버지 삶이 어떻게 달라졌을까 이야기하곤 하셨죠.

As a product developer, I started my process of research.

전 제품 개발자로 연구를 시작했어요.

I was very excited to find that there was a product out there

클린 출산 키트라는 상품이

called the Clean Birth Kit.

있다는 걸 알고 정말 기뻤죠.

But I just couldn't buy one for months.

하지만 수 개월을 기다려야 살 수 있었죠.

They were only assembled based on availability of funding.

왜냐하면 기금이 조성되지 않으면 생산하지 않았거든요.

Finally, when I got my hands on one, I was in shock again.

마침내 그 출산도구를 구했는데 또 충격에 빠졌죠.

I would never use these tools to deliver my baby, I thought.

내 아기였다면 절대 사용하지 않았을 거예요.

But to confirm my instincts, I went back to the women,

some of whom had the experience of using this product.

몇몇은 그걸 사용해본 경험이 있었거든요.

Lo and behold, they had the same reaction and more.

이게 뭔 일인지 모두 반응이 똑같았어요.

The women said they would rather deliver on a floor

엄마들은 사방에 피를 묻히며 비닐 시트에서 낳느니

than on a plastic sheet that smeared blood all over.

차라리 바닥이 낫겠다 하더군요.

They were absolutely right -- it would cause more infection.

저도 격하게 공감했죠. 감염만 더 악화시킬게 뻔했죠.

The thread provided was a highway to bacterial infection

저 실은 세균 고속도로나 마찬가지였어요.

through the baby's umbilical cord,

곧바로 세균이 탯줄로 타고가죠.

and the blade used was the kind that men used for shaving,

저 칼날은 면도할 때나 쓰는 거죠.

and they did not want it anywhere close to them.

그 엄마들은 그런걸 가까이 두고 싶어하지도 않았어요.

There was no incentive for anybody to redesign this product,

그 누구도 이 제품을 개선하려고 시도하지 않았어요.

because it was based on charity.

이건 자선사업을 통해서만 이루어졌거든요.

The women were never consulted in this process.

그 여성들은 이런 과정에 대해 상담을 받아 본적이 없어요.

And to my surprise, the need was not only in homes

더욱 충격인 건 가정집은 고사하고

but also in institutional settings with high-volume births.

출산을 전문으로하는 기관에서도 그런 상담은 부족했어요.

Situations in remote areas were even more daunting.

외곽지역으로 가보면 상황은 더 심각했어요.

This had to change.

변화가 필요했어요.

I made this my area of focus.

저는 먼저 저희 지역에 집중해서

I started the design process by collecting feedback,

다양한 피드백을 기초로 디자인을 시작했어요.

developing prototypes

견본을 만들고

and engaging with various stakeholders researching global protocols.

이해관계자들과 연계해서 해외로 확대해 협약을 맺고 연구를 진행했죠.

With every single prototype, we went back to the women

견본을 만들 때마다 엄마들에게 가지고 가서

to ensure that we had a product for them.

제품에 대해 피드백을 받았어요.

What I learned through this process was that these women,

이 과정중에 깨달은 건 이 여성들도

despite their extreme poverty,

비록 극심한 가난으로 힘들어하지만

placed great value on their health and well-being.

건강과 복지를 굉장히 중요하게 생각한다는 거예요.

They were absolutely not poor in mind.

몸은 가난해도 마음까지 가난하진 않았죠.

As with all of us, they would appreciate a well-designed product

우리와 마찬가지로 잘 만들어진 제품은 알아봐요

developed for their needs.

자신들의 필요성에 부합하는지를요.

After many iterations working with experts,

엄마들이 직접참여하고

medical health professionals

의료보건 전문가들과 작업하며

and the women themselves,

여러차례 반복하면서

I should say it was not an easy process at all,

물론 절대 쉬운 과정은 아니었지만

but we had a simple and beautiful design.

간편하고 훌륭한 제품을 만들어냈죠.

For a dollar more than what the existing product was offered for,

at three dollars, we were able to deliver "janma,"

a clean birth kit in a purse.

Janma, meaning "birth," contained a blood-absorbing sheet

All this came packaged in a beautiful purse

that was given to the mother as a gift after all her hard work,

that she carried home with pride as a symbol of prosperity.

그 엄마는 자랑스럽게 집에 가져갔어요.

One woman reacted to this gift.

한 엄마는 선물을 받자 이렇게 말했어요.

She said, "Is this really mine? Can I keep it?"

"정말 제 거예요? 제가 가져도 돼요?"라고요.

The other one said, "Will you give me a different color

이런 분도 있었어요.

"다음 아기출산할 땐 다른 색으로 주세요!"

when I have my next baby?"

Better yet, a woman expressed that this was the first purse

혹은 살면서 처음 가져본 가방이라고

that she had ever owned in her life.

기뻐하는 엄마도 있어요.

The kit, aside from its symbolism and its simplicity,

is designed to follow globally recommended medical protocol

and serves as a behavior-change tool to follow steps one after the other.

It can not only be used in homes, but also in institutional settings.

To date, our kit has impacted over 600,000 mothers and babies

around the world.

It's a humbling experience to watch these numbers grow,

겸허하게 도움받은 사람들의 수가 증가하는 걸 지켜보고 있지만

and I cannot wait until we reach a hundred million.

한편으론 빨리 십억 명까지 도달했으면 좋겠어요.

But women's health issues do not end here.

하지만 여성 건강 문제는 여기서 끝이 아니에요.

There are thousands of simple issues that require low-cost interventions.

저렴한 해결책이 필요한 간단한 문제들이 아직도 수 천 가지나 돼요.

We have facts to prove that if we invest in women and girls

여성과 어린 소녀에게 투자해서

and provide them with better health and well-being,

건강과 복지를 증진시켜주면

they will deliver healthier and wealthier and prosperous communities.

지역사회를 더 건강하고 풍요롭게 할 수 있어요.

We have to start by bringing simplicity and dignity to women's health issues:

단순하지만 존엄성을 가지고 여성의 건강 문제에 접근해야 해요

from reducing maternal mortality, to breaking taboos,

가령 산모 사망률 줄이기, 여성을 억압하는 금기 깨기

to empowering women to take control of their own lives.

여성들에게 자주적인 권리를 주는 것까지요.

This is my dream.

이게 저의 꿈이에요.

But it is not possible to achieve it without engaging men and women alike

하지만 여성뿐만 아니라 남성도 참여하지 않으면

from around the world --

소용없어요.

We should never forget that women are at the center of a sustainable world,

우리가 잊지 말아야 할 건 세상을 지속하는데 여성이 중요하단 사실과

and we do not exist without them.

여성 없인 우리도 존재할 수 없다는 사실이에요.
