I come from Egypt,

أنا من مصر،

which is also called Umm al-Dunya, the Mother of the World.

أو ما يُسمّى أيضًا بأمّ الدنيا.

It's a rich country filled with stories of rebellion,

وهي بلد غني بالقصص الثورية،

stories of civilizational triumph and downfall

وقصص الانتصارات والانهيارات الحضارية

and the rich, religious,

وغنى التنوع الديني

ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity.

والعرقي والثقافي واللغوي.

Growing up in such an environment,

إن نشأتي في محيط كهذا،

I became a strong believer in the power of storytelling.

جعلتني أؤمن بأهمية القصص.

As I searched for the medium with which to tell my story,

أثناء بحثي عن وسيلة لرواية قصتي،

I stumbled upon graphic design.

صادفت التصميم الجرافيكي.

I would like to share with you a project

أود أن أشارككم مشروعًا

of how graphic design can bring the Arabic language to life.

حول قدرة التصميم الجرافيكي على إعادة إحياء اللغة العربية.

But first, let me tell you why I want to do this.

ولكن دعوني أخبركم أولًا عن سبب رغبتي في فعل ذلك.

I believe that graphic design can change the world.

أنا أؤمن أن التصميم الجرافيكي بإمكانه تغيير العالم.

At least in my very own city of Cairo,

فعلى الأقل في مدينتي القاهرة،

it helped overthrow two separate dictators.

ساعد في إسقاط ديكتاتورين مختلفين.

As you can see from those photos,

كما يمكنكم أن تروا في هذه الصور،

the power and potential of graphic design as a tool for positive change

فإن قوة وقدرة التصميم الجرافيكي كوسيلة للتغيير الإيجابي

is undeniably strong.

كبيرة بلا شك.

Egypt's 2011 revolution was also a grassroots design revolution.

كانت ثورة 25 يناير ثورة جذرية في التصميم أيضًا.

Everyone became a creator.

أصبح الكل مبدعًا.

People were the real designers

كان الناس هم المصممون الحقيقيون

and, just overnight,

وبين ليلة وضحاها،

Cairo was flooded with posters,

اكتسحت الملصقات القاهرة،

signage, graffiti.

بالإضافة إلى اللافتات والرسومات الحائطية.

Visual communication

was the medium that spoke far louder than words

when the population of over 90 million voices were suppressed

for almost 30 years.

It was precisely this political and social suppression,

coupled with decades of colonialism

and miseducation

that slowly eroded the significance of the Arabic script in the region.

All of these countries once used Arabic.

كل هذه الدول كانت تستخدم اللغة العربية.

Now it's just the green and the blue.

لكن لم يعد هذا يسري الآن إلا على تلك الخضراء والزرقاء.

To put it simply,

ببساطة،

the Arabic script is dying.

إن الأبجدية العربية في طريقها للزوال.

In postcolonial Arab countries functioning in an increasingly globalized world,

في الدول العربية المستعمَرة سابقًا والتي تعيش في عالم متزايد العولمة،

it is a growing alarm

أصبح من المقلق

that less and less people are using the Arabic script to communicate.

كون مستعملي اللغة العربية كأداة للتواصل في تناقص مستمرّ.

As I was studying my master's in Italy, I noticed myself missing Arabic.

أثناء دراستي للماجستير في إيطاليا، لاحظت اشتياقي للغة العربية.

I missed looking at the letters,

اشتقت للنظر إلى الحروف،

digesting their meaning.

واستيعاب معناها.

So one day, I walked into one of the biggest libraries in Italy

لذا وفي يوم من الأيام، دخلت إحدى أكبر المكتبات في إيطاليا

in search of an Arabic book.

باحثة عن كتب عربية.

I was surprised to find that this is what they had

تفاجأت من عثوري هناك على هذا

under the category of "Arabic/Middle Eastern books."

في فئة "الكتب العربية/الشرق أوسطية."

(Laughter)

Fear, terrorism and destruction.

الخوف والإرهاب والدّمار.

One word: ISIS.

كلمة واحدة: داعش.

My heart ached

أحسست بغصة في قلبي

that this is how we are portrayed to the world,

من كون هذه هي صورة العالم عنَّا

even from a literary perspective.

حتى من منظور أدبي.

I asked myself: Whatever happened to the world-renowned writers

تساءلت: ماذا حصل للكتاب المرموقين عالميًّا

like Naguib Mahfouz, Khalil Gibran,

مثل نجيب محفوظ وخليل جبران

iconic poets like Mutanabbi, Nizar Qabbani?

وشعراء مرموقين مثل المتنبي ونزار قباني؟

Think about this.

فكّروا في هذا.

The cultural products of an entire region of the world,

إن المنتجات الثقافية لمنطقة بأكملها من العالم،

as rich, as diverse,

والتي تتسم بالغنى والتنوع،

have been deemed redundant,

صُنفت على أنها غير مهمة،

if not ignored altogether.

أو تم تجاهلها كليًّا.

The cultural products of an entire region of the world

إن المنتجات الثقافية لمنطقة بأكملها من العالم

have been barred from imparting any kind of real impact

مُنعت من ترك أي تأثير حقيقي

on global media productions and contemporary social discourse.

على الإنتاج الإعلامي العالمي والخطاب الاجتماعي المعاصر.

And then I reminded myself of my number one belief:

وبعدها ذكّرت نفسي بأولى قناعاتي:

design can change the world.

يستطيع التصميم الجرافيكي تغيير العالم.

All you need is for someone to catch a glimpse of your work,

كل ما تحتاجه هو شخص يلقي نظرة على عملك

feel, connect.

ويحسّ ويجد الرابط.

And so I started.

لذلك بدأت.

I thought about how can I stop the world from seeing us as evil,

فكرت في كيفية وضع حد لتصور العالم عنَّا على أننا أشرار،

as terrorists of this planet,

وإرهابيّو الكوكب،

and start perceiving us as equals,

والنظر إلينا عوض ذلك كأنداد

fellow humans?

وبشر.

How can I save and honor the Arabic script

كيف يمكنني حفظ وتكريم الأبجدية العربية

and share it with other people, other cultures?

ومشاركتها مع أناس آخرين وثقافات أخرى؟

And then it hit me:

وبعدها أتتني فكرة:

What if I combined the two most significant symbols

ماذا لو جمعت الرمزين الأكثر دلالة

of innocence and Arab identity?

على البراءة والهوية العربية؟

Maybe then people could resonate.

ربما حينها يمكن أن يتجاوب الناس.

What's more pure, innocent and fun as LEGO?

وهل يوجد ما هو أكثر أصالة وبراءة ومتعة من الليغو؟

It's a universal child's toy.

إنها لعبة أطفال عالمية.

You play with them, you build with them,

فأنت تلعب بها وتبني بها،

and with them, you imagine endless possibilities.

ويمكنك أيضًا تخيل إمكانيات لا نهائية بفضلها.

My eureka moment was to find a bilingual solution for Arabic education,

كانت اللحظة الحاسمة بالنسبة لي هي العثور على حل ثنائي اللغة للتعليم العربي،

because effective communication and education

لأن التواصل والتعلم الفعّالين

is the road to more tolerant communities.

هما السبيل إلى مجتمعات أكثر تسامحًا.

However, the Arabic and Latin scripts do not only represent different worlds

ولكن الأبجدية العربية والأبجدية اللاتينية لا تمثلان فقط عوالم مختلفة

but also create technical difficulties for both Eastern and Western communities

بل يخلقان أيضًا صعوبات تقنية لكل من المجتمعات الشرقية والغربية

on a daily basis.

بشكل يومي.

There are so many reasons why Arabic and Latin are different,

هناك عدة أسباب وراء اختلاف العربية عن اللاتينية،

but here are some of the main ones.

ولكن إليكم أهمها.

Yes, both use upward and downward strokes,

بالفعل، كلاهما يستخدم خطوطًا تصاعدية وأخرى تنازلية،

but have completely different baselines.

لكن لكل منهما خطوطًا قاعدية مختلفة تمامًا.

Arabic tends to be more calligraphic

فاللغة العربية تعتمد كثيرًا على الخط

and connectivity is important to the Arabic language,

والاتصال أمر مهم في اللغة العربية،

whose letters have to be mostly joined in order to articulate a given word.

التي تعتمد على ربط الحروف للتعبير بوضوح عن كلمة ما.

It also uses an entirely different system of punctuation and diacritics.

كما أنها تستعمل نظام علامات ترقيم وتشكيل مختلفٍ تمامًا.

But most importantly,

والأهم من هذا كله،

Arabic has no capital letters.

لا تحتوي اللغة العربية على حروف كبيرة.

Instead it has four different letter forms:

وتحتوي بدل ذلك على أربعة أشكال للحروف:

initial, medial, isolated and final.

الأولية والوسطية والمعزولة والنهائية.

I want to introduce the Arabic language to young learners, foreign speakers,

أود أن أقدم اللغة العربية للمتعلمين اليافعين والأجانب

but most importantly help refugees integrate to their host societies

والأهم من ذلك، أود مساعدة اللاجئين على الاندماج في المجتمعات المستضيفة لهم

through creating a bilingual learning system,

عبر ابتكار نظام تعلم ثنائي اللغة،

a two-way flow of communication.

تواصلٌ في كلا الاتجاهين.

And I called it "Let's Play."

وقد أسميته "يلا نلعب".

The idea is to simply create a fun and engaging way of learning

الفكرة ببساطة هي ابتكار طريقة مسلية ومشوقة لتعلم

Modern Standard Arabic through LEGO.

اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة عبر الليغو.

These are the two words. "Let's Play."

هاتان هما الكلمتان "يلا نلعب".

Every colored bar marks an Arabic letter.

يمثل كل شريط ملون حرفًا عربيًا.

As you can see, the letter is explained in form, sound

كما ترون، فكل حرف موضح شكلًا وصوتًا

and examples of words in function,

وهناك أمثلة لاستعمالات الكلمة،

in addition to the equivalent in Latin.

بالإضافة إلى مقابلها في اللاتينية.

Together, they form a fun pocket book

يشكلون معًا كتاب جيب ممتع

with the 29 Arabic letters and the four different forms,

يشمل الحروف الأبجدية ال29 للغة العربية والأشكال الأربعة المختلفة،

plus a 400-word dictionary.

إضافة إلى قاموس من 400 كلمة.

So this is how the page looks like.

هذا هو شكل الصفحات.

You have the letter, the transliteration in Latin

هناك الحرف والنقل الحرفي باللاتينية

and the description underneath.

والوصف في الأسفل.

I'll take you through the process.

سأشرح لكم العملية.

So first in my tiny studio in Florence,

أولًا قمت في ورشتي الصغيرة في فلورنسا،

I built the letters.

بتركيب الحروف.

I photographed each letter separately,

صوَّرت كل حرف على حدة،

and then I retouched every letter and chose the correct color background

ثم أضفت بعض اللمسات لكل حرف واخترت اللون المناسب للخلفية

and typefaces to use.

ونوعية الخط الذي سيُستعمل.

Ultimately, I created the full letter set,

أخيرًا، أنتجت مجموعة الحروف كاملة،

which is 29 letters times four different forms.

وهي 29 حرفًا كل منها بأربعة أشكال مختلفة.

That's 116 letters build just in one week.

أي 116 حرف رُكبت في أسبوع واحد فقط.

I believe that information should and can be fun, portable.

أنا أؤمن أن أي معلومة يجب ويمكن أن تكون ممتعة وقابلة للنقل.

This book is the final product,

هذا الكتاب هو المنتوج النهائي،

which I would eventually like to publish

والذي أرغب بنشره في نهاية المطاف

and translate into as many languages in the world,

وترجمته إلى أكبر عدد ممكن من اللغات في العالم،

so that Arabic teaching and learning becomes fun, easy and accessible globally.

حتى يصبح تعليم وتعلّم اللغة العربية ممتعًا وسهلًا ومتاحًا عالميًّا.

With this book, I hope to save my nation's beautiful script.

بفضل هذا الكتاب، آمل أن أنقذ لغة أمتي الجميلة.

Working on this project was a form of visual meditation,

كان العمل على هذا المشروع نوعًا من التأمل البصري،

like a Sufi dance,

مثل رقصة صوفية،

a prayer to a better planet.

One set of building blocks made two languages.

أنتَجَت مجموعة واحدة من اللبنات لغتين.

LEGO is just a metaphor.

الليغو ما هي إلا استعارة.

It's because we are all made of the same building unit,

ولأننا جميعًا خُلقنا من العناصر ذاتها،

is that I can see a future

فأنا أستطيع رؤية مستقبل

where the barriers between people

حيث الحواجز بين الناس

all come tumbling down.

تنهار جميعها تمامًا.

So no matter how ugly the world around us gets,

لذلك وبغض النظر عن مدى رداءة العالم حولنا،

or how many discouraging books on ISIS, the terrorist group,

ومهما بلغ عدد الكتب المحبطة التي تتحدث عن داعش، الجماعة الإرهابية،

and not Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess,

وليس إيزيس، الإلهة المصرية القديمة،

continue to be published,

التي ستُنشر،

I will keep building one colorful world.

فسأستمر في بناء عالم واحد مليء بالألوان.
