I come from Egypt,

I became a strong believer in the power of storytelling.

As I searched for the medium with which to tell my story,

I stumbled upon graphic design.

I would like to share with you a project

of how graphic design can bring the Arabic language to life.

But first, let me tell you why I want to do this.

I believe that graphic design can change the world.

At least in my very own city of Cairo,

it helped overthrow two separate dictators.

As you can see from those photos,

the power and potential of graphic design as a tool for positive change

is undeniably strong.

Egypt's 2011 revolution was also a grassroots design revolution.

Everyone became a creator.

People were the real designers

and, just overnight,

Cairo was flooded with posters,

Visual communication

was the medium that spoke far louder than words

It was precisely this political and social suppression,

that slowly eroded the significance of the Arabic script in the region.

All of these countries once used Arabic.

Now it's just the green and the blue.

To put it simply,

the Arabic script is dying.

In postcolonial Arab countries functioning in an increasingly globalized world,

it is a growing alarm

that less and less people are using the Arabic script to communicate.

As I was studying my master's in Italy, I noticed myself missing Arabic.

I missed looking at the letters,

digesting their meaning.

그 뜻을 이해하는 것을 그리워했습니다.

So one day, I walked into one of the biggest libraries in Italy

그래서 어느 날, 저는 아라비아 책을 찾기 위해

in search of an Arabic book.

I was surprised to find that this is what they had

저는 그 책들이 "아라비아/중동 도서" 칸에 있는 걸 보고 놀랐습니다.

under the category of "Arabic/Middle Eastern books."

Fear, terrorism and destruction.

공포, 테러, 파괴

One word: ISIS.

한 단어.."ISIS"

My heart ached

마음이 아팠습니다.

that this is how we are portrayed to the world,

심지어 문학적 관점에서도 우리가 세상에 이렇게 보이는 것이요.

even from a literary perspective.

I asked myself: Whatever happened to the world-renowned writers

저는 스스로 물었습니다.

나귀브 마후즈, 칼릴 지브란과 같은 세계적으로 유명한 작가들과

like Naguib Mahfouz, Khalil Gibran,

iconic poets like Mutanabbi, Nizar Qabbani?

무타나비, 니자르 카바니와 같은 상징적 시인들에게 무슨 일이 일어난 것일까?

Think about this.

이것에 대해 생각해봅시다.

The cultural products of an entire region of the world,

풍부하고 다양한 전 세계의 문화 상품이

as rich, as diverse,

have been deemed redundant,

if not ignored altogether.

완전히 무시되지는 않더라도요.

The cultural products of an entire region of the world

전세계 전 지역의 문화적 산물이

have been barred from imparting any kind of real impact

세계의 미디어 제작과 현대 문화 담론에

on global media productions and contemporary social discourse.

영향끼치지 못한다는 겁니다.

And then I reminded myself of my number one belief:

그러고 나서 저는 제 스스로 제 신념 하나를 정했습니다.

design can change the world.

디자인이 세상을 바꿀 수 있다는 것이죠.

All you need is for someone to catch a glimpse of your work,

여러분이 필요로 하는 모든 것은

누군가가 여러분의 일을 보고, 느끼고, 소통하는 것입니다

feel, connect.

And so I started.

그래서 저는 시작했습니다.

I thought about how can I stop the world from seeing us as evil,

저는 제가 어떻게 해야 세상이 우리를

as terrorists of this planet,

세상의 테러범과 같은 악마로 보지 않고

and start perceiving us as equals,

같은 사람으로 보게 될지 고민했습니다.

fellow humans?

How can I save and honor the Arabic script

제가 어떻게 해야 다른 사람들과 다른 문화들

and share it with other people, other cultures?

그리고 아라비아 문자의 명예를 지킬 수 있을까요?

And then it hit me:

그러자 이 생각이 떠올랐습니다.

What if I combined the two most significant symbols

무죄와 아랍의 가장 의미있는 두 이미지를 결합해보면 어떻까?

of innocence and Arab identity?

Maybe then people could resonate.

그러면 사람들이 공감해줄수도 있지 않을까요?

What's more pure, innocent and fun as LEGO?

LEGO보다 더 순수하고 결백하고 재미있는 게 있을까요?

It's a universal child's toy.

전세계 어린이들의 장난감이잖아요.

You play with them, you build with them,

여러분은 그것을 가지고 놀고, 뭔가를 만들고,

and with them, you imagine endless possibilities.

무한한 상상력을 펼쳤죠.

My eureka moment was to find a bilingual solution for Arabic education,

정말 찾아야 하는 것은 아랍의 교육을 위한 이중언어 해결책을 찾는 것이었습니다.

because effective communication and education

효과적인 의사소통과 교육은

is the road to more tolerant communities.

더 관대한 공동체로 향하는 길이니까요.

However, the Arabic and Latin scripts do not only represent different worlds

하지만 아라비아어와 라틴어는 다른 세계를 대표하지 않고

but also create technical difficulties for both Eastern and Western communities

매일 동부와 서부의 공동체의

on a daily basis.

기술적 차이를 계속 만들어내고 있습니다.

There are so many reasons why Arabic and Latin are different,

아라비아와 라틴어가 다른 이유는 많이 있지만

but here are some of the main ones.

Yes, both use upward and downward strokes,

네, 아라비아어와 라틴어는 둘 다 상향획과 하향획을 사용합니다.

but have completely different baselines.

하지만 분명히 다른 기준선을 가지고 있죠.

Arabic tends to be more calligraphic

아라비아어는 좀 더 필기체인 경우가 많고

and connectivity is important to the Arabic language,

연결이 중요합니다.

whose letters have to be mostly joined in order to articulate a given word.

아라비아 문자들은 주어진 단어를 표현하기 위해 합쳐져야만 하죠.

It also uses an entirely different system of punctuation and diacritics.

아라비아 문자는 전체적으로 다른 구두점과 발음 구별 기호 체계를 사용합니다.

But most importantly,

무엇보다 중요한 점은

Arabic has no capital letters.

아라비아 문자에는 대문자가 없습니다.

Instead it has four different letter forms:

대신 형태가 다른 문자가 4개 있죠.

initial, medial, isolated and final.

처음, 중간, 고립, 그리고 마지막

I want to introduce the Arabic language to young learners, foreign speakers,

저는 아라비아 언어를 어린 친구들과 외국어 구사자에게 소개하고 싶습니다.

but most importantly help refugees integrate to their host societies

하지만 무엇보다 난민들이 사회에 통합되는데 도움을 주고 싶어요.

through creating a bilingual learning system,

두 가지 언어를 배우는 것을 통해서 도움을 줄 수 있을 거라고 생각해요.

a two-way flow of communication.

의사소통의 두 가지 방법이죠.

And I called it "Let's Play."

저는 이것을 이렇게 부릅니다. "같이 놀자"

The idea is to simply create a fun and engaging way of learning

이 아이디어는 현대 표준 아라비어를 레고를 통해서 배우는 것을

Modern Standard Arabic through LEGO.

재미와 연결시키려는 것에서 탄생하였습니다.

These are the two words. "Let's Play."

"같이 놀자"가 되는 거죠.

Every colored bar marks an Arabic letter.

각각의 색 레고로 아라비아 문자들을 표시합니다.

As you can see, the letter is explained in form, sound

여러분이 볼 수 있듯이 문자는 형태와 소리로 표현될 수 있죠.

and examples of words in function,

함수라는 단어를 예로 들어 설명할게요.

in addition to the equivalent in Latin.

라틴어로도 같이 보죠.

Together, they form a fun pocket book

이것들은 재미있는 작은 책을 만들었습니다.

with the 29 Arabic letters and the four different forms,

29개의 아라비아 문자와 4개의 형태,

plus a 400-word dictionary.

그리고 400단어 사전을 더한 거죠.

So this is how the page looks like.

I'll take you through the process.

그 과정을 말씀드릴게요.

So first in my tiny studio in Florence,

처음에는 플로렌스에 있는 제 작은 작업실에서

I built the letters.

문자를 만들었습니다.

I photographed each letter separately,

저는 각각의 문자들을 따로따로 사진을 찍었죠.

and then I retouched every letter and chose the correct color background

그리고 저는 모든 문자를 수정하고 올바른 배경색을 고르고

and typefaces to use.

사용하기 위한 활자체를 골랐습니다

Ultimately, I created the full letter set,

결국 저는 전체 문자 세트을 만들었습니다.

which is 29 letters times four different forms.

29개의 문자들이 4가지 다른 형태를 가진 세트를요.

That's 116 letters build just in one week.

단지 1주일만에 116문자를 만들어낸 겁니다.

I believe that information should and can be fun, portable.

저는 이 정보가 재밌고, 휴대하기 쉬울 거라 믿었습니다.

This book is the final product,

이 책이 결과물입니다.

which I would eventually like to publish

저는 이 책을 출판하고

and translate into as many languages in the world,

세계 많은 언어들로 번역하려고 했습니다.

so that Arabic teaching and learning becomes fun, easy and accessible globally.

아라비아어를 가르치고 배우는 것이 전세계적으로 재밌고, 쉽고 접근하기 쉽도록요.

With this book, I hope to save my nation's beautiful script.

이 책을 통해 저는 제 나라의 아름다운 문자를 지키고 싶습니다.

Working on this project was a form of visual meditation,

수피 댄스와 같은 시각적인 명상과 같습니다.

like a Sufi dance,

a prayer to a better planet.

One set of building blocks made two languages.

한 세트는 2개의 언어로 만들어져있습니다.

LEGO is just a metaphor.

레고는 비유에 불과합니다.

It's because we are all made of the same building unit,

우리는 모두 같은 구조 단위로 만들어져 있기 때문이죠.

is that I can see a future

이를 통해 저는 사람 사이를 가로막는 벽이

where the barriers between people

all come tumbling down.

다 없어지는 그런 미래를 보게 됩니다.

So no matter how ugly the world around us gets,

우리를 둘러싼 세상이 얼마나 나빠지든

or how many discouraging books on ISIS, the terrorist group,

테러범 집단인 ISIS같은 실망스러운 책이 생기든

and not Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess,

고대 이집트 여신 이시스를 말하는 게 아니고요.

continue to be published,

책은 계속되서 출판될 것입니다.

I will keep building one colorful world.

저는 다채로운 세상을 계속 만들어낼 것입니다.
