I'm Ellen and I'm totally obsessed with food.

But I didn't start out obsessed with food.

I started out obsessed with global security policy,

بل بدأ مع سياسة السلام العالمي

because I lived in New York during 9/11 and it was a very relevant thing.

I got from global security policy to food

because I realized when I'm hungry, I'm really pissed off,

and I'm assuming the rest of the world is too.

Especially if you and your kids are hungry and your neighbor's kids are hungry

and your whole neighborhood is hungry.

And actually, it looks like the areas of the world that are hungry

ان تكون المنطقة التي تحوي الجياع

are also the areas of the world that are pretty insecure.

هي نفسها المناطق الغير مستقرة ومتوترة

So I took a job at the United Nations World Food Programme

وتبعا لهوسي ذاك .. حصلت على عمل في برنامج الغذاء العالمي التابع للامم المتحدة

as a way to try to address these security issues

كطريقة لكي اتعامل مع مشاكل الأمن العالمي

عن طريق حل مشاكل الغذاء العالمية

through food security issues.

There, I came across what I think is the most brilliant of their programs.

وعندما كنت أعمل معهم .. رأيت

أحد افضل البرامج الرائعة التي يقومون بها

It's called School Feeding and it's a really simple idea

انها تدعى " تغذية طلاب المدارس " .. وهو مشروع بفكرة بسيطة

to get in the middle of the cycle of poverty and hunger

وهو يستهدف مباشرة لب مشكلة الفقر والغذاء

that continues for a lot of people around the world, and stop it.

وقد وصل الى شريحة كبيرة من الاشخاص حول العالم وحل مشكلة الجوع والفقر لديهم

فعبر اعطاء طلاب المدارس وجبة غذائية مدرسية .. فانك تدفعهم الى المجئ الى المدرسة

A free school meal gets kids into school,

which is education, the first step out of poverty,

وبالتالي سوف تكسب تعليمهم .. مما يؤدي الى التغلب على مشكلة الفقر

but it also gives them the micronutrients and the macronutrients they need

كما ان البرنامج كان يعطي مغذيات رئيسية .. ومعادن .. تلك التي يحتاجها الاطفال

مما يؤدي الى نمو سليم للاطفال .. جسديا وعقليا

to develop mentally and physically.

While I was working at the UN, I met this girl. Her name is Lauren Bush.

وعندما كنت اعمل مع الامم المتحدة .. تعرفت على فتاة تدعى " لورين بوش "

And she had this really awesome idea to sell the bag, called the "Feed Bag" --

وقد خطر على بالها فكرة رائعة

وهي بيع حقائب تدعي " فييد باغ = حقيبة الغذاء "

which is really beautifully ironic because you can strap on the Feed Bag.

وهي فكرة " مميزة " لأن تلك الحقيبة يمكن وضعها على الظهر ..

But each bag we'd sell would provide

ولكن الفكرة ان كل حقيبة تباع تؤمن

a year's worth of school meals for one kid.

غذاء لطفل لمدة عام كامل عبر برنامج وجبات الغذاء المدرسية

It's so simple, and we thought, OK,

وهي فكرة بسيطة .. وببعض الحسابات

it costs between 20 and 50 bucks to provide school feeding for a year.

تبين لنا أنه ببيع بين 20-50 حقيبة

يمكننا ان نؤمن الغذاء لطلاب مدرسة واحدة

We could sell these bags and raise a ton of money and awareness

ويمكننا ببيع تلك الحقائب تأمين مبالغ كبيرة من المال

for the World Food Programme.

وكما اننا سنلقي الضوء على برنامج الغذاء العالمي

But at the UN, sometimes things move slowly

ولكن ولأن برامج الامم المتحدة عادة تسير ببطىء

and they basically said no.

فقد قالوا لنا " لا " لذلك المشروع

And we thought, this is such a good idea, it's going to raise so much money.

وقلنا في أنفسنا .. ان هذه فكرة رائعة لجمع التبرعات .. كيف يمكنهم رفضها

So we said screw it, we'll start our own company,

فقررنا ان ننشىء شركة خاصة بنا .. تقوم بهذا الامر .. وقد قمنا بذلك منذ 3 سنوات

which we did, three years ago.

That was my first dream, to start this company called FEED,

وتلك الشركة كانت حلمي الاول .. لقد اطلقنا على الشركة أسم " فييد "

We did a bag for Haiti just a month after the earthquake

وقد قمنا بتصنيع حقائب لضحايا زلزال هايتي .. وبدأنا ببيعها بعد شهر من الزلزال

to provide school meals for kids in Haiti.

لكي نوفر الغذاء لطلاب المدارس في هايتي

So FEED's doing great.

ونحن نوفر عبر " فييد " ما يقارب 55 مليون وجبة غذاء للطلاب في جميع انحاء العالم ..

We've so far provided 55 million meals to kids around the world

لذا فالشركة تعمل بصورة جيدة

by selling now 550,000 bags, a ton of bags, a lot of bags.

فقد بعنا ما يقارب 555000 حقيبة .. الكثير منها .. الكثير فعلا

All this time you're really --

عادة يبدو من الصعب التفكير بمشكلة الجوع

hunger is a hard thing to think about,

because what we think about is eating.

ومن الصعب التفكير بمشكلة الجوع .. لأننا عادة نفكر بالطعام طيلة الوقت

I think about eating a lot and I really love it.

أنا أفكر بالطعام طيلة الوقت .. وانا احب الطعام كثيراً

And the thing that's strange about international hunger

ولكن المشكلة في مشكلة الجوع العالمي

and talking about international issues

او القضايا العالمية والتحدث عنها

is that most people want to know:

ان معظم الناس يسألون على الفور .. مالذي تقومون به من أجل اميركا

"What are you doing for America's kids?"

هل تقومون بشيء حيال اطفال الولايات المتحدة الامريكية ؟

There's definitely hunger in America:

لأن هناك جياع في امريكا حتما .

49 million people and almost 16.7 million children.

ويقدر عددهم ب 49 مليون شخص .. 16.7 منهم اطفال !

I mean that's pretty dramatic for our own country.

وهذا امرٌ مأساوي لدولة مثل الولايات المتحدة

Hunger definitely means something different in America

صحيح ان الجوع في الولايات المتحدة يختلف عن الجوع في الدول الاخرى

than it does internationally,

but it's incredibly important to address hunger in our own country.

ولكن هذا لا يعني ان يتم اهماله في بلدنا

But the bigger problem that we all know about is obesity,

ولكن المشكلة الاكبر من الجوع في بلدنا . .هي تلك التي نعلمها جميعا

and it's dramatic.

هي السمنة .. وهي مشكلة عويصة جدا

The other thing that's dramatic

والمصيبة الكبرى .. ان الجوع والسمنة ازدادوا كثيرا

is that both hunger and obesity have really risen in the last 30 years.

في الثلاثين سنة الماضية

Unfortunately, obesity's not only an American problem.

وللاسف .. السمنة ليست مشكلة امريكية فحسب

It's actually been spreading all around the world

بل هي مشكلة تطال كل دول العالم ايضا

and mainly through our kind of food systems that we're exporting.

بسبب نظامنا الغذائي والذي يتم اعتماده في دول العالم الاخرى

The numbers are pretty crazy.

والارقام تشير الى وقائع خطيرة

There's a billion people obese or overweight

فيقدر عدد الاشخاص المصابون بالسمنة بنحو مليار شخص

and a billion people hungry.

والجياع هم مليار ايضا

So those seem like two bifurcated problems,

قد تبدو هاتين المشكلتين متناقضتين .. ومنفصلتين تماما

but I kind of started to think about, you know,

وقد كنت اعتقد هذا ايضا ..

what is obesity and hunger?

ولكن الجوع والسمنة .. كلاهما يتعلقان بامر واحد فقط

What are both those things about?

Well, they're both about food.

هو الطعام !

And when you think about food,

وعندما تفكر بموضوع الطعام

the underpinning of food in both cases is potentially problematic agriculture.

And agriculture is where food comes from.

Agriculture in America's very interesting.

It's very consolidated

and the foods that are produced lead to the foods that we eat.

لأن الطعام الذي نزرعه هو الذي نأكله

The foods that are produced are, more or less, corn, soy and wheat.

ان معظم الطعام الذي نصنعه .. سواء كان ذلك الذرة او الصويا او الطحين

فإن ثلاث ارباعه ان صح القول هو طعام منتج من اجل

And that's three-quarters of the food that we're eating:

الاطعمة السريعة والمعالجة

processed foods and fast foods.

Unfortunately, in our agricultural system,

ولسوء الحظ ان نظامنا الغذائي

we haven't done a good job in the last three decades

لم يسر على نحو جيد في العقود الثلاثة الماضية

فيما يخص تصدير التكنولوجيات الزراعية لباقي انحاء العالم

of exporting those technologies around the world.

So African agriculture, which is the place of most hunger in the world,

وخصوصا الى افريقيا حيث يقبع معظم الفقر هناك

has actually fallen precipitously as hunger has risen.

وتبعا لفشلنا ذاك

ارتفع الفقر هناك

So somehow we're not making the connect

لذا نحن .. نوعا ما لم نقم بالتواصل الملائم

between exporting a good agricultural system

بين تصدير التكنولوجيات الزراعية

that will help feed people all around the world.

والجوع .. لكي نستطيع ان نطعم الناس حول العالم

Who is farming? That's what I was wondering.

وكنت دوما اتسائل من الذي يزرع لهم ؟ - الجياع -

So I went and stood on a big grain bin in the Midwest,

لذا قمت بدراسة سلة الغذاء في الشرق الاوسط - التنوع الزراعي -

and that really didn't help me understand farming,

ولكن ذلك لم يساعدني في فهم آلية الزراعة هناك

but I think it's a really cool picture.

And the reality is that between farmers in America --

who actually, quite frankly, when I spend time in the Midwest,

are pretty large in general.

And their farms are also large.

But farmers in the rest of the world are actually quite skinny,

and that's because they're starving.

Most hungry people in the world are subsistence farmers.

And most of those people are women --

which is a totally other topic that I won't get on right now,

but I'd love to do the feminist thing at some point.

I think it's really interesting to look at agriculture from these two sides.

فهنا نظام زراعي كبير متكامل

There's this large, consolidated farming that's led to what we eat in America,

وهذا النظام هو الذي يطعمنا في الولايات المتحدة الامريكية

وهذا النظام كان كذلك منذ 1980

and it's really been since around 1980, after the oil crisis,

بعد الازمة النفطية

when, you know -- mass consolidation,

mass exodus of small farmers in this country.

And then in the same time period,

we've kind of left Africa's farmers to do their own thing.

Unfortunately, what is farmed ends up as what we eat.

And in America, a lot of what we eat has led to obesity

and has led to a real change

in sort of what our diet is, in the last 30 years.

It's crazy.

وهو امر جنوني

A fifth of kids under two drinks soda.

اذ ان خمس الاطفال الذين اعمارهم دون السنتين يشربون الصودا !

Hello! You don't put soda in bottles.

تصوروا ! .. يضعون لهم الصودا في قارورات الحليب

But people do, because it's so cheap,

ويقومون بذلك .. لانها رخيصة

and so our whole food system in the last 30 years has really shifted.

وعلى هذه الشاكلة بات نظامنا الغذائي منذ 30 عام

وهكذا تغير تماما

I mean, you know, it's not just in our own country,

واعتقد انه .. ليس كذلك في بلدنا فحسب

but really we're exporting the system around the world,

لأننا نصدر هذا النظام الغذائي الى جميع انحاء العالم

and when you look at the data of least developed countries --

وعندما ننظر الى الدراسات من الدول النامية

especially in cities, which are growing really rapidly --

وخاصة في المدن والتي تنمو بوتيرة سريعة

people are eating American processed foods.

نجد ان الناس هناك تأكل الاطعمة الامريكية المعالجة - السريعة -

And in one generation, they're going from hunger

وخلال جيل واحد فحسب

انتقل معظمهم من الجوع

and all of the detrimental health effects of hunger

ومن كل المشاكل التي كانت متعلقة به ومن تبعاته

to obesity and things like diabetes and heart disease in one generation.

الى السمنة ومرض السكري

So the problematic food system is affecting both hunger and obesity.

لذا فان المشكلة في النظام الغذائي

تشمل الجوع والسمنة معا

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is a global food system

وهي ليست مشكلة عويصة لا حل لها ..

انما هي متعلقة بالنظام الغذائي العالمي

where there's a billion people hungry and a billion people obese.

اذا هناك مليار جائع .. ومليار آخر يعاني من السمنة المفرطة

I think that's the only way to look at it.

وهذه هي الطريقة الوحيدة التي يمكن النظر بها الى عالمنا اليوم من منظور الغذاء

And instead of taking these two things

وبدلا من اخذ هاتين المشكلتين

as bifurcated problems that are very separate,

it's really important to look at them as one system.

We get a lot of our food from all around the world

and people from all around the world are importing our food system,

وفي نفس الوقت نحن نصدر عاداتنا الغذائية الى جميع انحاء العالم

so it's incredibly relevant to start a new way of looking at it.

I've learned -- and the technology people here,

but apparently, it really takes 30 years

for a lot of technologies to become really endemic to us,

I think 2010 can be a really interesting year

and it's the birthday of the global food system.

That's the first birthday I want to talk about.

If we really think that this is something that's happened in the last 30 years,

there's hope in that.

It's the 30th anniversary of GMO crops

the farm crisis in America

and the change in how we've addressed agriculture internationally.

So there's a lot of reasons to take this 30-year time period

as sort of the creation of this new food system.

I'm not the only one who's obsessed with this whole 30-year thing.

The icons like Michael Pollan and Jamie Oliver in his TED Prize wish

فهناك رموز كبيرة تهتم في هذا الشأن أمثال " ميشيل بولان "

وجيمي اوليفر .. الذي فاز بجائزة تيد

both addressed this last three-decade time period

وكلاهما كانا يهاجمان العقود الثلاث الماضية

as incredibly relevant for food system change.

Well, I really care about 1980

وانا اهتم حقا بعام 1980 .. فهو العام الذي ولدت فيه

because it's also the 30th anniversary of me this year.

And so in my lifetime,

a lot of what's happened in the world --

and being a person obsessed with food --

a lot of this has really changed.

So my second dream is that I think we can look to the next 30 years

as a time to change the food system again.

And we know what's happened in the past,

So I'm announcing today the start of a new organization,

And the 30 Project is really focused

And I think by aligning international advocates that are addressing hunger

and domestic advocates that are addressing obesity,

we might actually look for long-term solutions

that will make the food system better for everyone.

We all tend to think that these systems are quite different

but if we take a 30-year view, there's more hope in collaborative ideas.

So I'm hoping that by connecting really disparate organizations

like the ONE campaign and Slow Food,

which don't seem right now to have much in common,

we can talk about holistic, long-term, systemic solutions

that will improve food for everyone.

Some ideas I've had is like, look, the reality is --

kids in the South Bronx need apples and carrots

and so do kids in Botswana.

And how are we going to get those kids those nutritious foods?

Another thing that's become incredibly global is production of meat and fish.

كما ان هنالك وعي عالمي كبير عن كيفية انتاج اللحوم والاسماك

Understanding how to produce protein

وفهم واف لكيفية انتاج البروتينات

in a way that's healthy for the environment

بصورة تكون صحية للبيئة وللانسان

and healthy for people

will be incredibly important to address things like climate change

وسوف يكون من الملائم ايضا ان نواجه مشكلة التغير المناخي

and how we use petrochemical fertilizers.

وكيف سنستخدم الاسمدة البتروكيميائية

And, you know, these are really relevant topics

وهذه كما ترون مواضيع مختلفة ..ولكن حلولها

that are long-term and important

هي حلول على المدى الطويل

for both people in Africa who are small farmers

and people in America who are farmers and eaters.

And I also think that thinking about processed foods in a new way,

where we actually price the negative externalities

like petrochemicals and like fertilizer runoff

into the price of a bag of chips --

Well, if that bag of chips then becomes inherently more expensive than an apple,

then maybe it's time for a different sense of personal responsibility in food choice

because the choices are actually choices

instead of three-quarters of the products being made just from corn, soy and wheat.

and I've gathered a coalition of a few organizations to start.
