Well my personal story, my personal journey,

is a demonstration of exactly what's been happening

I want to share some of that story with you,

but also some of my ideas around change

So let me begin

by first of all giving a very, very brief history of time,

if I may indulge.

In medieval societies there were defined allegiances.

An identity was defined

primarily by religion.

And then we moved on into an era in the 19th century

with the rise of a European nation-state

where identities and allegiances were defined

by ethnicity.

So identity was primarily defined by ethnicity,

and the nation-state reflected that.

In the age of globalization, we moved on.

I call it the era of citizenship --

where people could be from multi-racial, multi-ethnic backgrounds,

but all be equal as citizens

in a state.

You could be American-Italian; you could be American-Irish;

you could be British-Pakistani.

But I believe now

that we're moving into a new age,

How I define the age of behavior

is a period of transnational allegiances,

where identity is defined more so

by ideas and narratives.

And these ideas and narratives that bump people across borders

are increasingly beginning to affect

the way in which people behave.

Now this is not all necessarily good news,

because it's also my belief

that hatred has gone global

just as much as love.

But actually it's my belief

that the people who've been truly capitalizing on this age of behavior,

up until now, up until recent times,

And that's something which I'd like to elaborate on.

If we look at Islamists,

if we look at the phenomenon

of far-right fascists,

one thing they've been very good at,

one thing that they've actually been exceeding in,

is communicating across borders,

using technologies to organize themselves,

to propagate their message

and to create truly global phenomena.

Now I should know,

because for 13 years of my life,

لأنني و لمدة ثلاثة عشر عاماً من حياتي ،

I was involved in an extreme Islamist organization.

كنت متورطاً في إحدى المنظمات الإسلامية المتطرفة .

And I was actually a potent force

في حقيقة الأمر كنت ذو تأثيرقوي وفعْال

in spreading ideas across borders,

في نشر أفكار في كل الأنحاء .

and I witnessed the rise of Islamist extremism

وشهدت تصاعد التطرف الإسلامي

as distinct from Islam the faith,

and the way in which it influenced my co-religionists

وبالطريقة التي إنعكست وأثرت على المسلمين

across the world.

And my story, my personal story,

is truly evidence for the age of behavior

that I'm attempting to elaborate upon here.

I was, by the way -- I'm an Essex lad,

born and raised in Essex in the U.K.

Anyone who's from England

knows the reputation we have from Essex.

But having been born in Essex,

at the age of 16,

I joined an organization.

At the age of 17, I was recruiting people from Cambridge University

At the age of 19,

I was on the national leadership of this organization in the U.K.

At the age of 21, I was co-founding this organization in Pakistan.

At the age of 22,

I was co-founding this organization in Denmark.

By the age of 24,

I found myself convicted in prison in Egypt,

being blacklisted from three countries in the world

for attempting to overthrow their governments,

being subjected to torture

in Egyptian jails

and sentenced to five years as a prisoner of conscience.

Now that journey,

and what took me from Essex all the way across the world --

by the way, we were laughing at democratic activists.

بالمناسبة كنا نسخر من نشطاء الديموقراطية .

We felt they were from the age of yesteryear.

كنا نحس أنهم من عهد الأمس .

We felt that they were out of date.

أحسسنا أن تاريخ صلاحيتهم قد إنتهى .

I learned how to use email

تعلمت كيفية أستخدام البريد الالكتروني

from the extremist organization that I used.

من نشطاء المنظمة المتطرفة التي كنت أنتمي إليها .

I learned how to effectively communicate across borders

تعلمت أن أتواصل بفاعلية مع أناس في دول أخرى

without being detected.

بدون أن يتتبعني أحد .

Eventually I was detected, of course, in Egypt.

في النهاية إكتشفوا أمري ، بالطبع في مصر .

But the way in which I learned

to use technology to my advantage

was because I was within an extremist organization

that was forced to think beyond

the confines of the nation-state.

The age of behavior: where ideas and narratives

were increasingly defining behavior

and identity and allegiances.

وتُعرف الهوية والإخلاص ( الولاء ) .

So as I said, we looked to the status quo

and ridiculed it.

And it's not just Islamist extremists that did this.

وليس فقط المتطرفون الإسلاميون فعلوا ذلك .

But even if you look across

the mood music in Europe of late,

far-right fascism is also on the rise.

A form of anti-Islam rhetoric

is also on the rise

and it's transnational.

And the consequences that this is having

is that it's affecting the political climate

across Europe.

What's actually happening

is that what were previously localized parochialisms,

individual or groupings of extremists

who were isolated from one another,

have become interconnected in a globalized way

and have thus become, or are becoming, mainstream.

Because the Internet and connection technologies

are connecting them across the world.

If you look at the rise of far-right fascism across Europe of late,

إذا نظرتم إلى تصاعد اليمين المتطرف الفاشي في أوربا مؤخراً ،

you will see some things that are happening

سترون بعض الأشياء التي تحدث

that are influencing domestic politics,

لها من التأثير على السياسات المحلية ،

yet the phenomenon is transnational.

بالرغم من أن الظاهرة لها آثارها في عديد من الدول .

In certain countries, mosque minarets are being banned.

في دول معينة ، مآذن الجوامع ممنوعة .

In others, headscarves are being banned.

في دول أخرى ، الحجاب ممنوع .

In others, kosher and halal meat are being banned,

as we speak.

And on the flip side,

we have transnational Islamist extremists

doing the same thing across their own societies.

And so they are pockets of parochialism that are being connected

in a way that makes them feel like they are mainstream.

Now that never would have been possible before.

They would have felt isolated,

until these sorts of technologies came around

and connected them in a way

that made them feel part of a larger phenomenon.

Where does that leave democracy aspirants?

Well I believe they're getting left far behind.

And I'll give you an example here at this stage.

وسأعطيكم مثال هنا على هذا المسرح .

If any of you remembers the Christmas Day bomb plot:

أي منكم يذكر حكاية قنبلة يوم الكريسماس :

there's a man called Anwar al-Awlaki.

كان هناك رجل إسمه أنور العولقي ( الملهم لتنظيم القاعدة ).

As an American citizen, ethnically a Yemeni,

كمواطن أمريكي ، من أصول يمنية ،

in hiding currently in Yemen,

مختبئ حالياً فى اليمن ،

who inspired a Nigerian,

الذي قام بإلهام مواطن نيجيري ،

son of the head of Nigeria's national bank.

إبن مدير البنك الوطني النيجيري.

This Nigerian student studied in London, trained in Yemen,

هذا الطالب النيجيري درس في لندن ، تدرب فى اليمن ،

boarded a flight in Amsterdam to attack America.

سافر على طائرة في أمستردام ليهاجم أمريكا .

In the meanwhile,

في ذات الوقت ،

the Old mentality with a capital O,

الإتجاه القديم في التفكير ( الإستهتار ) ،

was represented by his father, the head of the Nigerian bank,

قد تمثل في والده ، مدير البنك النيجيري ،

warning the CIA that his own son was about to attack,

كان قد حذر المخابرات المركزية بأن إبنه يفكر في الهجوم ،

and this warning fell on deaf ears.

وهذا التحذير لم يكن له أي صدى .

The Old mentality with a capital O,

الإتجاه القديم في التفكير ،

as represented by the nation-state,

كما ظهر في الدولة الوطنية ،

not yet fully into the age of behavior,

لم يكن قد تعمق في عهد السلوك ،

not recognizing the power of transnational social movements,

لم يدرك قوة الحركات الإجتماعية في مختلف الدول ،

got left behind.

كان متروك في الخلف .

And the Christmas Day bomber almost succeeded

ومفجر يوم الكريسماس قد نجح تقريباً

in attacking the United States of America.

في الهجوم على الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية .

Again with the example of the far right:

مرة أخرى مع مثال لليمين المتطرف :

that we find, ironically,

xenophobic nationalists

أن رواد الزينوفوبيا ( كراهية الأجانب )

are utilizing the benefits of globalization.

يوظفون مزايا العولمة لأغراضهم .

So why are they succeeding?

لماذا إذاً ينجحون ؟

And why are democracy aspirants falling behind?

ولماذا يتخلف طامحوا الديمقراطية .

Well we need to understand the power of the social movements who understand this.

حسناً نحتاج أن نفهم قوى الحركات الإجتماعية الذين يفهمون هذا .

And a social movement is comprised, in my view,

والحركة الإجتماعية ممثلة في ، من وجهه نظري ،

it's comprised of four main characteristics.

تتكون من أربعة خصائص رئيسية .

It's comprised of ideas and narratives

إنها تتمثل في أفكار وخبرات محددة

and symbols and leaders.

ورموز وقادة .

I'll talk you through one example,

سأحدثكم عبر مثال ،

and that's the example that everyone here will be aware of,

وهذا المثال هو الذى سيجعل كل واحد منكم على إدراك كامل ،

and that's the example of Al-Qaeda.

وذلك المثال هو القاعدة .

If I asked you to think of the ideas of Al-Qaeda,

إذا سألتكم أن تفكروا في ماهية أفكار القاعدة ،

that's something that comes to your mind immediately.

ذلك شيئ يخطر سريعاً على أذهانكم .

If I ask you to think of their narratives --

إذا سألتكم ماذا تعتقدون عن خبراتهم الخاصة --

the West being at war with Islam, the need to defend Islam against the West --

الغرب في حالة حرب مع الإسلام ، الإحتياج إلى الدفاع عن الإسلام ضد الغرب --

these narratives, they come to your mind immediately.

هذه الخبرات الخاصة ، تتبادر إلى أذهانكم سريعاً .

Incidentally, the difference between ideas and narratives:

بالمناسبة ، الفرق بين الأفكار والخبرات الخاصة :

the idea is the cause that one believes in;

الفكرة هي السبب فى أن الشخص يؤمن بها ;

and the narrative is the way to sell that cause --

والخبرة الخاصة هي الطريق لبيع ذلك السبب --

the propaganda, if you like, of the cause.

الدعاية والترويج ، إذا شئتم ، للغاية .

So the ideas and the narratives of Al-Qaeda come to your mind immediately.

لذا فالأفكار والخبرات الخاصة بالقاعدة تتبادر لاذهانكم في الحال .

If I ask you to think of their symbols and their leaders,

إذا سألتكم بأن تفكروا في رموزهم وقياداتهم ،

they come to your mind immediately.

فإنهم سريعاً ما يأتوا إلى عقلكم .

One of their leaders was killed in Pakistan recently.

واحد من قيادتهم قُتل في باكستان مؤخراً .

So these symbols and these leaders

لذا فإن هذه الرموز والقيادات

come to your mind immediately.

تأتي إلى عقلكم في الحال .

And that's the power of social movements.

وهذه هي قوة الحركات الإجتماعية .

They're transnational, and they bond around these ideas and narratives

إنهم يتعدوا حدود الدول ، ويتواصلون بهذه الأفكار والخبرات الخاصة

and these symbols and these leaders.

والرموز والقيادات .

However,

على أي حال ،

if I ask your minds to focus currently on Pakistan,

لو سألتكم أن تركزوا عقولكم الأن على باكستان ،

and I ask you to think

وسألتكم أن تفكروا

of the symbols and the leaders for democracy

في تلك الرموز الخاصة بقيادات الديموقراطية

in Pakistan today,

في باكستان اليوم ،

you'll be hard pressed

to think beyond perhaps

the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Which means, by definition,

that particular leader no longer exists.

One of the problems we're facing is, in my view,

that there are no globalized,

youth-led, grassroots social movements

advocating for democratic culture

across Muslim-majority societies.

There is no equivalent of the Al-Qaeda, without the terrorism,

لا يوجد ما يوازي القاعدة ، بدون الإرهاب ،

for democracy across Muslim-majority societies.

لدعم الديموقراطية في مجتمعات الأغلبية المسلمة .

There are no ideas and narratives and leaders and symbols

ليس هناك أفكار وخبرات خاصة وقادة ورموز

advocating the democratic culture on the ground.

تدْعم ثقافة الديمقراطية في أرض الواقع .

So that begs the next question.

لذا فإن ذلك يجلب السؤال التالي

Why is it that extremist organizations,

لماذا تلك المنظمات المتطرفة ،

whether of the far-right or of the Islamist extremism --

سواء من اليمين المتطرف أو المتطرفون الإسلاميون --

Islamism meaning those who wish to impose

الإسلام السياسى يعني هؤلاء الذين يأملون بفرض

one version of Islam over the rest of society --

رؤية آحادية للإسلام على بقية المجتمع --

why is it that they are succeeding

لماذا ينجح هؤلاء

in organizing in a globalized way,

في تنظيم أنفسهم بطريقة عالمية ،

whereas those who aspire to democratic culture

بينما هؤلاء الذين يطمحون لنشر ثقافة الديمقراطية

are falling behind?

يتراجعون للخلف ؟

And I believe that's for four reasons.

وأعتقد أن ذلك يحدث لأربعة أسباب .

I believe, number one, it's complacency.

أؤمن ، بإن أول شئ هو التخاذل .

Because those who aspire to democratic culture

لأن هؤلاء الذين يطمحون بنشر ثقافة الديمقراطية

are in power,

وفي موقع قوة ،

or have societies

أو أن مجتمعاتهم

that are leading globalized, powerful societies,

الذين يقودون العولمة ، مجتمعات قوية ،

powerful countries.

And that level of complacency means

they don't feel the need to advocate for that culture.

The second, I believe,

is political correctness.

That we have a hesitation

in espousing the universality of democratic culture

because we are associating that --

we associate believing in the universality of our values --

with extremists.

Yet actually, whenever we talk about human rights,

we do say that human rights are universal.

But actually going out to propagate that view

is associated with either neoconservativism

or with Islamist extremism.

To go around saying that I believe

democratic culture is the best that we've arrived at

as a form of political organizing

is associated with extremism.

And the third,

والسبب الثالث ،

democratic choice in Muslim-majority societies

الإختيار الديمقراطي في مجتمعات ذات الأغلبية المسلمة

has been relegated to a political choice,

آخذ في الهبوط إلى مستوى الإختيار السياسي ،

meaning political parties

بمعنى أن أحزاب سياسية

in many of these societies

في كثير من هذه المجتمعات

ask people to vote for them

تسأل الناس للتصويت من أجلهم

as the democratic party,

كحزب ديموقراطي ،

but then the other parties ask them to vote for them

لكن عندها الأحزاب الأخرى تسألهم أن يصوتوا من أجلهم

as the military party --

كحزب عسكري --

wanting to rule by military dictatorship.

يريدون أن يحكموا حكم عسكري مطلق .

And then you have a third party saying,

وعندها يكون عندك حزب ثالث يقول ،

"Vote for us; we'll establish a theocracy."

So democracy has become merely one political choice

لذا فالديمقراطية أصبحت بكل بساطة إختيار سياسي واحد

among many other forms

And what happens as a result of this

وما يحدث نتيجة لذلك

is, when those parties are elected,

and inevitably they fail,

وحتماً إنهم يفشلون ،

or inevitably they make political mistakes,

أو حتماً يفعلون أخطاء سياسية ،

democracy takes the blame

فالديمقراطية هي التي تأخذ اللوم

for their political mistakes.

كمبرر لأخطائهم السياسية .

And then people say, "We've tried democracy. It doesn't really work.

وعندها يقول الناس ، " نحن إختبرنا الديمقراطية . إنها لا تعمل جيداً .

Let's bring the military back again."

دعونا نُرجع النظام العسكرى مرة أخرى . "

And the fourth reason, I believe,

والسبب الرابع ، على ما أعتقد ،

is what I've labeled here on the slide as the ideology of resistance.

What I mean by that is,

if the world superpower today was a communist,

it would be much easier for democracy activists

to use democracy activism

as a form of resistance against colonialism,

than it is today with the world superpower being America,

occupying certain lands

تحتل أراضى معينة

and also espousing democratic ideals.

وأيضاً تعتنق وتعتبر الصورة الأمثل للديمقراطية .

So roughly these four reasons

لذلك هذه الأربعة أسباب تقريبأ

make it a lot more difficult for democratic culture to spread

تمثل صعوبة أكثر أمام ثقافة الديمقراطية لتنتشر

as a civilizational choice,

كإختيار مُتحضر ،

not merely as a political choice.

وليس فقط مجرد إختيار سياسي .

When talking about those reasons,

عندما نتحدث عن هذه الأسباب الأربعة ،

let's break down certain preconceptions.

دعونا نحلل مفاهيم محددة متفق عليها .

Is it just about grievances?

هل هو فقط عن الشعور بالظلم ؟

Is it just about a lack of education?

هل هو فقط عن نقص التعليم ؟

Well statistically,

إحصائياً ،

the majority of those who join extremist organizations are highly educated.

الأغلبية العظمى من الذين ينضمون إلى المنظمات المتطرفة هم على درجات تعليم عالية .

Statistically, they are educated, on average,

إحصائياً ، إنهم متعلمون بمعدل

above the education levels

أعلى من مستويات التعليم

of Western society.

Anecdotally, we can demonstrate

that if poverty was the only factor,

well Bin Laden is from one of the richest families in Saudi Arabia.

سنجد أن بن لادن ينحدر من أغنى العائلات في السعودية .

His deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was a pediatrician --

نائبه ، أيمن الظواهري ، كان طبيب أطفال --

not an ill-educated man.

ليس رجل متواضع التعليم .

International aid and development has been going on for years,

المعونات الدولية والتنمية مستمرة منذ أعوام طويلة ،

but extremism in those societies, in many of those societies,

لكن التطرف في تلك المجتمعات ، في كثير من هذه المجتمعات ،

has been on the rise.

مايزال في تصاعد .

And what I believe is missing

وما أعتقد أنه مفقود هنا

is genuine grassroots activism

هو نشاط حقيقي فعّال

on the ground,

in addition to international aid,

in addition to education, in addition to health.

Not exclusive to these things, but in addition to them,

is propagating a genuine demand for democracy on the ground.

And this is where I believe

neoconservatism had it upside-down.

Neoconservatism had the philosophy

that you go in with a supply-led approach

تعني أنك تذهب بمقاربة دعم خاص

to impose democratic values from the top down.

لتفرض مبادئ وقيم الديمقراطية من قمة الهرم إلى أسفل .

Whereas Islamists and far-right organizations, for decades,

بينما كان الإسلاميين ومنظمات اليمين المتطرف ، لعشرات الأعوام ،

have been building demand for their ideology on the grassroots.

يبنون طلب أو رغبة لأيدلوجياتهم على أرض الواقع .

They've been building civilizational demand for their values

يبنون طلب أو إحتياج حضاري لقيمهم الخاصة

on the grassroots,

على أرض الواقع بين الناس المؤيدين لهم ،

and we've been seeing those societies slowly transition

ونحن نرى تلك المجتمعات تتحول ببطء شديد

to societies that are increasingly asking for

إلى مجتمعات تتزايد فيها الطلب على

a form of Islamism.

Mass movements in Pakistan

الحركات الجماهيرية في باكستان

have been represented after the Arab uprisings

بدأت تتضح بعد الثورات العربية

mainly by organizations

أساساً بواسطة منظمات

claiming for some form of theocracy,

تدْعى أنها تريد صورة من الحكم الديني ،

rather than for a democratic uprising.

بدلاً من ثورة الديمقراطية .

Because since pre-partition,

لأنه منذ الإنقسامات

they've been building demand for their ideology on the ground.

يعملون معاً على بناء رغبة لأيدلوجياتهم أو أفكارهم على أرض الواقع .

And what's needed is a genuine transnational

وما نحتاجه هو إتحاد حقيقي عابر للدول

youth-led movement

لقيادة حركة شبابية

that works to actively advocate

تعمل على دعم نشط لترويج

for the democratic culture --

لثقافة الديمقراطية --

which is necessarily more

الشيئ الضروري أكثر

than just elections.

من مجرد عملية الإنتخابات .

But without freedom of speech, you can't have free and fair elections.

لكن بدون حرية التعبير ، لا يمكن أن تكون الإنتخابات حُرة و نزيهة .

Without human rights, you don't have the protection granted to you to campaign.

بدون حقوق إنسان ، لا تتوفر الحماية للقيام بالعمل السياسي .

Without freedom of belief,

بدون حرية عقيدة ،

you don't have the right to join organizations.

لا يكون لديكم الحق في الإنضمام للمنظمات .

So what's needed is those organizations on the ground

هذه المنظمات هي ما نحتاجه على أرض الواقع

advocating for the democratic culture itself

لتدعيم مفهوم ثقافة الديمقراطية نفسه

to create the demand on the ground for this culture.

لخلق الطلب لهذه الثقافة على أرض الواقع .

What that will do

ذلك سيتسبب في

is avoid the problem I was talking about earlier,

تجنب المشكلة التي تحدثت عنها قبلاً ،

where currently we have political parties presenting democracy

حيث نعاني حالياً من عرض الأحزاب السياسية للديمقراطية

as merely a political choice in those societies

وكأنه مجرد خيار سياسي في هذه المجتمعات

alongside other choices

جنباً مع الإختيارات الأخرى

such as military rule and theocracy.

مثل الحكم العسكري والدولة الدينية .

Whereas if we start building this demand on the ground on a civilizational level,

بينما إذا بدأنا بناء هذا الإحتياج على أرض الواقع بمستوى حضاري ،

rather than merely on a political level,

بدلاً من أن يكون فقط على مستوى سياسي ،

a level above politics --

مستوى فوق السياسة --

movements that are not political parties,

حركات ليست أحزاب سياسية ،

but are rather creating this civilizational demand

لكنها بالأحرى تخلق هذا الإحتياج الحضاري

for this democratic culture.

لهذه الثقافة الديمقراطية .

What we'll have in the end

ما سيكون لدينا في النهاية

is this ideal that you see on the slide here --

هو هذا النموذج الذي ترونه على الشريحة هنا --

the ideal that people should vote in an existing democracy,

النموذج أن الناس مفترض أن تنتخب في ظل وجود ديمقراطية ،

not for a democracy.

وليس التصويت من أجل ديمقراطية .

But to get to that stage,

لكن للوصول إلى هذه المرحلة ،

where democracy builds the fabric of society

حيث تبني الديمقراطية نسيج المجتمع

and the political choices within that fabric,

والخيارات السياسية في ذلك النسيج ،

but are certainly not theocratic and military dictatorship --

لكن بالتأكيد ليس الدولة الدينية والديكتاتور العسكري --

i.e. you're voting in a democracy,

in an existing democracy,

and that democracy is not merely one of the choices at the ballot box.

To get to that stage,

we genuinely need to start building demand

نحتاج أن نبدأ في بناء طلب فعلي حقيقي

in those societies on the ground.

في هذه المجتمعات على أرض الواقع .

Now to conclude, how does that happen?

لكى أختم حديثي ، كيف يحدث ذلك ؟

Well, Egypt is a good starting point.

حسناً ، مصر نقطة جيدة للبداية .

The Arab uprisings have demonstrated that this is already beginning.

الثورات العربية قد بدأت تعبر عن نفسها .

But what happened in the Arab uprisings and what happened in Egypt

لكن ما حدث في الثورات العربية وما حدث في مصر

was particularly cathartic for me.

كان هو الدافع الحقيقى للحديث إليكم .

What happened there was a political coalition

ما حدث هناك كان تحالف سياسي

gathered together for a political goal,

إجتمع معاً من أجل هدف سياسي ،

and that was to remove the leader.

ألا وهو خلع القائد .

We need to move one step beyond that now.

نحتاج أن نتحرك خطوة بجانب ذلك الآن .

We need to see how we can help those societies

نحتاج أن نرى كيف نستطيع أن نساعد هذه المجتمعات

move from political coalitions,

لتتحرك من تلك التحالفات السياسية ،

loosely based political coalitions,

بحرية مطلقة من التحالفات السياسية ،

to civilizational coalitions

إلى تحالفات حضارية

that are working for the ideals and narratives

تعمل بنجاح مع النموذج والخبرات

of the democratic culture on the ground.

الخاصة بالديمقراطية على أرض الواقع .

Because it's not enough to remove a leader

لأنه ليس كاف أن تخلع رئيس

or ruler or dictator.

أو حاكم أو ديكتاتور .

That doesn't guarantee that what comes next

ذلك لا يضمن أن ما بعد ذلك

will be a society built on democratic values.

سيكون مجتمع مبني على قيم ديمقراطية .

But generally, the trends that start in Egypt

لكن عموماً ، الظواهر التي تبدأ في مصر

have historically spread across the MENA region,

قد بدأت تنتشر عبر منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا ،

the Middle East and North Africa region.

منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا .

So when Arab socialism started in Egypt, it spread across the region.

لذا عندما بدأت الإشتراكية العربية في مصر ، إنتشرت في كل المنطقة .

In the '80s and '90s when Islamism started in the region,

في الثمانينات والتسعينات عندما بدأ الإسلام السياسي في المنطقة ،

it spread across the MENA region as a whole.

إنتشر في كل منطقة الشرق الأوسط بالكامل .

And the aspiration that we have at the moment --

والطموح الذي لدينا في هذه اللحظة --

as young Arabs are proving today

هو شباب عربي يحاول إثبات نفسه اليوم

and instantly rebranding themselves

وسريعاً ما يضعون بصماتهم بأنفسهم

as being prepared to die for more than just terrorism --

بكونهم مستعدون للموت لشئ أكثر من الإرهاب --

is that there is a chance

أن هناك فرصة

that democratic culture can start in the region

للثقافة الديمقراطية تستطيع أن تنتشر في المنطقة

and spread across to the rest of the countries that are surrounding that.

وتنتشر عبر باقي الدول المحيطة بهم .

But that will require

لكن ذلك سيتطلب

helping these societies transition

مساعدة هذه المجتمعات في التحول

from having merely political coalitions

من مجرد تحالفات سياسية

to building genuinely grassroots-based social movements

إلى بناء قاعدة من مؤمنين حقيقين بحركات إجتماعية

that advocate for the democratic culture.

تدعم الثقافة الديمقراطية .

And we've made a start for that in Pakistan

وقد بدأنا بالفعل في باكستان

with a movement called Khudi,

بحركة تسمى خودي " Khudi"

where we are working on the ground to encourage the youth

حيث نعمل على أرض الواقع لتشجيع الشباب

to create genuine buy-in for the democratic culture.

على خلق إقتناع حقيقي بثقافة الديمقراطية .

And it's with that thought that I'll end.
