Ah, romantic love -

often all at the same time.

Why do we choose to put ourselves through its emotional wringer?

Does love make our lives meaningful,

or is it an escape from our loneliness and suffering?

それとも 愛は 孤独や苦しみからの逃避？

Is love a disguise for our sexual desire,

or a trick of biology to make us procreate?

Is it all we need?

Do we need it at all?

If romantic love has a purpose,

もし恋愛に 意味があるのなら

neither science nor psychology has discovered it yet.

それはいまだ科学も心理学も 解明できていません

But over the course of history,

しかし 歴史を振り返ると

some of our most respected philosophers have put forward some intriguing theories.

何人かの偉大な哲学者が 興味深い論理を提唱しました

Love makes us whole, again.

愛は私たちを再び 一つにするのです

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato

古代ギリシャの哲学者 プラトンは

explored the idea that we love in order to become complete.

私たちは完全な存在になるために愛し合う という考えを示しました

In his "Symposium", he wrote about a dinner party,

『饗宴（きょうえん）』の中で ある宴を描いています

at which Aristophanes, a comic playwright,

喜劇詩人であるアリストパネスが

regales the guests with the following story:

客人をもてなし 次のような話を始めました

humans were once creatures with four arms, four legs, and two faces.

One day, they angered the gods,

and Zeus sliced them all in two.

ゼウスは人間達を皆 二つに切り裂いたのです

Since then, every person has been missing half of him or herself.

それ以来人間は 自身の片身を無くしている状態で

Love is the longing to find a soulmate who'll make us feel whole again,

愛とは 再度完全な状態に戻るための 片身探しという訳なのです

or, at least, that's what Plato believed a drunken comedian would say at a party.

少なくとも 酔っぱらい喜劇詩人 ならこう言うだろうとプラトンは考えたのです

Love tricks us into having babies.

愛は人間に子を作るように仕向けるのです

Much, much later, German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer

maintained that love based in sexual desire

was a voluptuous illusion.

He suggested that we love because our desires lead us to believe

that another person will make us happy, but we are sorely mistaken.

Nature is tricking us into procreating,

and the loving fusion we seek is consummated in our children.

we are thrown back into our tormented existences,

Love is escape from our loneliness.

愛とは孤独からの逃避なのです

According to the Nobel Prize-winning British philosopher Bertrand Russell,

we love in order to quench our physical and psychological desires.

私たちは物理的 心理的な欲望を満たすため 愛し合うのです

Humans are designed to procreate,

人間は子を産むように作られていますが

but without the ecstasy of passionate love,

情熱的な愛のエクスタシーなしでは

sex is unsatisfying.

セックスに満足できないのです

Our fear of the cold, cruel world tempts us to build hard shells

冷たくて残酷な世の中への恐れが 私たちに堅い殻を作らせ

to protect and isolate ourselves.

Love's delight, intimacy, and warmth helps us overcome our fear of the world,

and engage more abundantly in life.

Love enriches our whole being, making it the best thing in life.

Love is a misleading affliction.

愛とは悩みの原因でもあります

Siddhārtha Gautama,

ガウタマ・シッダールタは

who became known as the Buddha, or the Enlightened One,

仏陀 すなわち悟りを開いた人として 知られており

probably would have had some interesting arguments with Russell.

ラッセルとなら 興味深い対話をしたことでしょう

Buddha proposed that we love because we are trying to satisfy our base desires.

仏陀は 人間は基本的な欲望を満たすために 愛し合うのだと主張しました

Yet, our passionate cravings are defects,

だが私たちの情熱に満ちた強い欲求は 欠陥であり

and attachments, even romantic love, are a great source of suffering.

愛着または恋愛でさえも 苦しみの根源になってしまうのです

Luckily, Buddha discovered the eight-fold path,

幸運な事に 仏陀は八正道を見いだしました

a sort of program for extinguishing the fires of desire

これは一切の煩悩を絶つための方法で

so that we can reach Nirvana,

これによって涅槃に入る事ができるのです

an enlightened state of peace, clarity, wisdom, and compassion.

涅槃とは 平安・明瞭・分別・あわれみの境地なのです

The novelist Cao Xueqin illustrated this Buddhist sentiment

作家の曹雪芹はこの仏教の考えを こう表現しました

that romantic love is folly in one of China's greatest classical novels,

中国の古典傑作の一つ 『紅楼夢』のなかで

"Dream of the Red Chamber."

恋愛は愚かであると言いました

In a subplot, Jia Rui falls in love with Xi-feng

その物語の中で 賈瑞は熙鳳に恋をしますが

who tricks and humiliates him.

熙鳳は賈瑞を騙し 屈辱を与えたのです

Conflicting emotions of love and hate tear him apart,

愛と憎しみの葛藤が 彼の心を引き裂いてしまうのです

so a Taoist gives him a magic mirror that can cure him

それから道士がやって来て 病を治す不思議な鏡を渡し

as long as he doesn't look at the front of it.

その鏡を正面から見てはいけないと伝えました

But of course, he looks at the front of it.

でも 結局見てしまった彼は

He sees Xi-feng.

鏡の中に熙鳳がいるのを見たのでした

His soul enters the mirror

彼の魂は鏡の中へ入り

and he is dragged away in iron chains to die.

鉄の鎖を巻き付けられて 死んでしまうのです

Not all Buddhists think this way about romantic and erotic love,

全ての仏教徒が恋愛や性的な愛について こう思っている訳ではありませんが

but the moral of this story

この話の意図する所は

is that such attachments spell tragedy,

愛着とは悲劇を生んでしまい

and should, along with magic mirrors, be avoided.

この話の魔法の鏡のように 避けるべきものなのです

Love lets us reach beyond ourselves.

愛とは自分自身を超えるものなのです

Let's end on a slightly more positive note.

すこしポジティブな話で締めくくりましょう

The French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir

フランス人哲学者 シモーヌ・ド・ヴォーボワールは

proposed that love is the desire to integrate with another

愛とは他人と一つになりたい という願いなのだと提唱しました

and that it infuses our lives with meaning.

愛は人生に意味を与えてくれるのです

However, she was less concerned with why we love

しかし なぜ愛し合うのか という疑問についてはあまり語らず

and more interested in how we can love better.

むしろ どうやってより良く愛し合えるか ということに重点を置きました

She saw that the problem with traditional romantic love

彼女は 昔から恋愛の問題というのは

is it can be so captivating,

魅力的でもあり

that we are tempted to make it our only reason for being.

自分たちが存在する唯一の理由 という事にしてしまいがちだけれど

Yet, dependence on another to justify our existence

自分の存在意義を正当化する為に 他人に依存する事は

easily leads to boredom and power games.

簡単に倦怠へと変わり 力関係のゲームに陥りがちだと考えました

To avoid this trap, Beauvoir advised loving authentically,

この罠に陥らないために ヴォーボワールは本気で愛し合う

which is more like a great friendship.

親友のような関係がいいと アドバイスしました

Lovers support each other in discovering themselves,

恋人同士 互いに支え合い 自身を見つけ出し

reaching beyond themselves,

自身を超えて

and enriching their lives and the world together.

共に歩む人生とその世界を 豊かにするのです

Though we might never know why we fall in love,

なぜ恋に落ちるのかは 一生分かりませんが

we can be certain that it will be an emotional rollercoaster ride.

感情のジェットコースターに乗る という事は間違いないでしょう

It's scary and exhilarating.

愛は怖くて楽しい

It makes us suffer

苦しく

and makes us soar.

傷つけ

Maybe we lose ourselves.

自身を見失い

Maybe we find ourselves.

または 発見するかもしれない

It might be heartbreaking,

とても悲しく

or it might just be the best thing in life.

いや 人生で最高のものになるかもしれない
