2,400 years ago,

2400年前

one of history's famous thinkers said life is like being chained up in a cave,

史上最高の思想家の一人が 人生は洞窟に鎖でつながれて

forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall.

壁面に映る影を見せられることだと 表現しました

Pretty cheery, right?

随分と陰気な例えですね

That's actually what Plato suggested in his Allegory of the Cave,

これがプラトンの 「国家」の第７巻で提案された

found in Book VII of "The Republic,"

洞窟の比喩なのです

in which the Greek philosopher envisioned the ideal society

古代ギリシャの哲学者は 正義や真実そして美といった

by examining concepts like justice, truth and beauty.

概念について考える事で 理想の社会を構想したのです

In the allegory, a group of prisoners have been confined in a cavern since birth,

この寓話では生まれた時から 洞窟に閉じ込められ

with no knowledge of the outside world.

外部の世界を知らない囚人たちが出てきます

They are chained, facing a wall, unable to turn their heads,

彼らは壁に向かってつながれ 振り返ることができず

while a fire behind them gives off a faint light.

背後の炎からわずかな明かりを得ています

Occasionally, people pass by the fire,

時折 通行人が 動物の像などを持ち

carrying figures of animals and other objects that cast shadows on the wall.

火のそばを通るので壁に その影が映ります

The prisoners name and classify these illusions,

囚人はこの幻想こそが 現実だと信じて

believing they're perceiving actual entities.

これに名前を付け 区別するのです

Suddenly, one prisoner is freed and brought outside for the first time.

ある日 その内の１人が 初めて自由を許され 外に出ます

The sunlight hurts his eyes and he finds the new environment disorienting.

彼はまばゆい日光と異なる環境に 困惑します

When told that the things around him are real,`

身の回りにある物こそが現実だと教えられ

while the shadows were mere reflections, he cannot believe it.

影はその反映でしかないと言われても それを信じることができません

The shadows appeared much clearer to him.

影はいつになく鮮明に見えてきます

But gradually, his eyes adjust

しかし 徐々に目が慣れてきて

until he can look at reflections in the water,

水面に映る影を認識し

at objects directly,

物の姿を直接見ることができるようになり

and finally at the Sun,

そして 太陽が見えるようになります

whose light is the ultimate source of everything he has seen.

この光こそが全ての源なのです

The prisoner returns to the cave to share his discovery,

この囚人は洞窟の仲間に それを伝えようとしますが

but he is no longer used to the darkness,

彼はもはや暗闇に耐えることができず

and has a hard time seeing the shadows on the wall.

壁に映る影を 見極めることも困難です

The other prisoners think the journey has made him stupid and blind,

囚人たちは 彼が外に出て 愚かになり 目も見えなくなったと思い

and violently resist any attempts to free them.

自由になることに あくまで抵抗を示します

Plato introduces this passage as an analogy

プラトンはこの一説を

of what it's like to be a philosopher trying to educate the public.

哲学者が人々に真実を 説く時の例えとしました

Most people are not just comfortable in their ignorance

ほとんどの人は 無知であることに安住するだけでなく

but hostile to anyone who points it out.

それを指摘する人に 敵意すら向けてくるのです

In fact, the real life Socrates was sentenced to death

事実 ソクラテスは 世の秩序を乱したかどで

by the Athenian government for disrupting the social order,

アテナイの法廷で裁かれ 死刑を言い渡されました

and his student Plato spends much of "The Republic"

そして弟子のプラトンは 著作の「国家」の中で

disparaging Athenian democracy,

while promoting rule by philosopher kings.

With the cave parable,

洞窟の寓話では

Plato may be arguing that the masses are too stubborn and ignorant

プラトンは民衆達が 自らを統治するには

to govern themselves.

あまりに頑固で無知なことを 示したかったのでしょう

But the allegory has captured imaginations for 2,400 years

しかし 2400年にわたり この比喩は想像を掻き立ててきました

because it can be read in far more ways.

Importantly, the allegory is connected to the theory of forms,

developed in Plato's other dialogues,

which holds that like the shadows on the wall,

things in the physical world are flawed reflections of ideal forms,

such as roundness, or beauty.

In this way, the cave leads to many fundamental questions,

including the origin of knowledge,

the problem of representation,

and the nature of reality itself.

For theologians, the ideal forms exist in the mind of a creator.

神学者にとって 理想の形態は 創造主の心の中に存在しています

For philosophers of language viewing the forms as linguistic concepts,

言語哲学者は 形態を言語的な概念とみなし

the theory illustrates the problem of grouping concrete things

under abstract terms.

And others still wonder whether we can really know

that the things outside the cave are any more real than the shadows.

As we go about our lives,

can we be confident in what we think we know?

Perhaps one day,

a glimmer of light may punch a hole in your most basic assumptions.

Will you break free to struggle towards the light,

even if it costs you your friends and family,

光に向かって進んでいくか それとも―

or stick with comfortable and familiar illusions?

Truth or habit? Light or shadow?

真実か習わしか？ 光か影か？
