2,400 years ago,

2400년 전,

one of history's famous thinkers said life is like being chained up in a cave,

역사 속 유명한 사상가들 중 한명은 삶이란 동굴속에 묶여진 상태로

forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall.

암벽에 비치는 그림자를 보도록 강요받는 것과 같다고 말했습니다.

Pretty cheery, right?

참 유쾌한 생각이기도 하네요.

That's actually what Plato suggested in his Allegory of the Cave,

사실 이 생각은 플라톤이 제시한 동굴의 비유의 내용입니다.

found in Book VII of "The Republic,"

이 비유는 그의 저서인 '공화국' 제 7권에서 언급되었는데

in which the Greek philosopher envisioned the ideal society

이 책을 통하여 그는 이상적인 사회를 구상하였으며

by examining concepts like justice, truth and beauty.

정의, 진실, 미학이라는 개념에 대해 질문을 던집니다.

In the allegory, a group of prisoners have been confined in a cavern since birth,

이 비유에서, 한 죄수 집단은 태어난 순간부터 동굴에 갇혀 있습니다.

with no knowledge of the outside world.

그들은 입구를 등진상태로 고개도 돌릴 수 없습니다.

They are chained, facing a wall, unable to turn their heads,

그리고 바깥 세상에 대한 아무런 지식도 없지요.

while a fire behind them gives off a faint light.

하지만 가끔 사람들을 비롯한 다른 사물들이

Occasionally, people pass by the fire,

carrying figures of animals and other objects that cast shadows on the wall.

이들이 보고있는 벽에 그림자와 울림을 만들어 내면서 지나갑니다.

그 죄수들은 그러한 환상들을 이름 붙이고 분류합니다.

The prisoners name and classify these illusions,

자신들이 실재를 인지하고 있다고 믿는 것 입니다.

believing they're perceiving actual entities.

Suddenly, one prisoner is freed and brought outside for the first time.

갑자기, 한 죄수가 해방되었고 동굴 밖으로 처음 나가게 됩니다.

The sunlight hurts his eyes and he finds the new environment disorienting.

바깥의 빛은 너무 눈부셔 그는 새로운 환경에 혼란을 느끼게 됩니다.

When told that the things around him are real,`

그는 지금 자기 주위에 있는 것들이 실재이고

while the shadows were mere reflections, he cannot believe it.

그림자는 이들이 반영된 상일 뿐이라는 이야기를 듣고 처음에는 믿지 않습니다.

The shadows appeared much clearer to him.

그에게는 그림자가 훨씬 더 선명하게 느껴집니다.

But gradually, his eyes adjust

그러나 점점 그의 눈은 외부에 적응하게 되어

until he can look at reflections in the water,

처음에는 물체들이 물에 비친모습을 보고 이어서는 물체를 직접 볼 수있게 되며

at objects directly,

and finally at the Sun,

그리고 마침내 그가 보던 모든 것들의 근원이였던

whose light is the ultimate source of everything he has seen.

The prisoner returns to the cave to share his discovery,

그 죄수는 그의 발견을 알리고자 동굴로 돌아갑니다

but he is no longer used to the darkness,

그러나 그는 더 이상 어둠에 익숙하지 않고

and has a hard time seeing the shadows on the wall.

벽에 비친 그림자를 보는 것을 힘들어 합니다.

The other prisoners think the journey has made him stupid and blind,

and violently resist any attempts to free them.

Plato introduces this passage as an analogy

of what it's like to be a philosopher trying to educate the public.

Most people are not just comfortable in their ignorance

대다수의 사람들은 그들의 무지에 대해 안주 할 뿐만 아니라

but hostile to anyone who points it out.

In fact, the real life Socrates was sentenced to death

실제로 소크라테스도 사회질서를 어지럽혔다는 죄목으로

by the Athenian government for disrupting the social order,

and his student Plato spends much of "The Republic"

그리고 그의 제자였던 플라톤은 '공화국'을 집필하는데 전념하게 됩니다.

disparaging Athenian democracy,

while promoting rule by philosopher kings.

With the cave parable,

Plato may be arguing that the masses are too stubborn and ignorant

to govern themselves.

But the allegory has captured imaginations for 2,400 years

because it can be read in far more ways.

Importantly, the allegory is connected to the theory of forms,

For theologians, the ideal forms exist in the mind of a creator.

신학자들에게있어서 이상적인형태는 창조주의 정신속에만 존재합니다.

For philosophers of language viewing the forms as linguistic concepts,

형태를 언어적인 개념으로 바라보는 언어 철학자들에게 있어서

the theory illustrates the problem of grouping concrete things

under abstract terms.

And others still wonder whether we can really know

that the things outside the cave are any more real than the shadows.

As we go about our lives,

Perhaps one day,

a glimmer of light may punch a hole in your most basic assumptions.

Will you break free to struggle towards the light,
