Picture this:

وێنای ئەمە بکە:

your friend and you are watching a sitcom

تۆ و هاوڕێکەت سەیری دیمەنێکی کۆمیدی دەکەن

and a sassy sidekick walks into a room,

و هاوڕێیەکت لەو کاتە دێتە ژوورەوە،

carrying a four-tiered wedding cake.

کێکی چوار قاتی هاوسەرگیری بەدەستەوەیە.

پێی گیردەبێ و دەکەوێت،

He trips,

falls,

and face-plants into the cake.

ڕووخساری دەکەوێتە نێو کێکەکە.

Your friend doubles over with laughter and says,

هاوڕێکەت دەداتە پێکەنین و دەڵێت،

"It's so ridiculous! So ironic!"

“ئەمە زۆر پێکەنیناوییە! مایەی گاڵتەیە!”

Well, quick, what do you do?

باشە، بەخێرایی، چی دەکەیت؟

Do you laugh along with the laugh track

تۆش لەگەڵی پێدەکەنیت

and let this grievous misinterpretation of irony go?

و ڕێگە دەدەیت ئەم کاردانەوە هەڵەیەی گاڵتەکە وا بڕوات؟

Or, do you throw caution to the wind

یاخود ڕێگە نادەیت و بیر دەکەیتەوە

and explain the true meaning of irony?

و مانای ڕاستەقینەی گاڵتەکردن شی دەکەیتەوە؟

If you're me, you choose the latter.

ئەگەر لە شوێنی من بیت، ئەوەی دووەم هەڵدەبژێریت.

Unfortunately, irony has been completely misunderstood.

بەداخەوە، گاڵتەکردن بەتەواوی بەهەڵە گەیەندراوە.

We tend to throw out that term

حەزدەکەین ئەو دەستەواژەیە بەکاربهێنین

whenever we see something funny or coincidental.

هەرکاتێک شتێکی پێکەنیناوی ببینین یان بە ڕێکەوت ببینین.

And while many examples of true irony can be funny,

و لە کاتێکدا گەلێک نموونە لە گاڵتەی ڕاستەقینە دەکرێت پێکەنیناوی بێت،

that is not the driving factor of being ironic.

ئەوە ناچێتە بواری گاڵتەکردن.

A situation is only ironic if what happens

بارودۆخێک گاڵتەکردنە ئەگەر ئەوەی ڕوودەدات

is the exact opposite of what was expected.

بەتەواوی پێچەوانەی پێشبینیکردن بێت.

If you expect A, but get B,

ئەگەر پێشبینی یەک بکەیت، بەڵام دوو’ت دەستکەوێت،

then you have irony.

ئەو کاتە گاڵتەکردنە.

وەکو کێکەکە کە ڕووخساری کەسێک کەوتە ناوی.

Let's take the slap-stick cake situation as an example.

When someone walks in precariously balancing something

کاتێک کەسێک شتێک هەڵدەگرێت

that shouldn't be carried alone,

کە نابێت بە تەنها هەڵیبگرێت،

trips, falls, and makes a mess,

قاچی تێک دەئاڵێت و دەکەوێت، و خراپی دروست دەکات،

it is funny, but it's not ironic.

پێکەنیناوییە، بەڵام مایەی گاڵتەنییە.

In fact, you probably expect someone

لە ڕاستیدا، ڕەنگە پێشبینی

who is single-handedly carrying a huge cake to trip.

کەوتنی کەسێک بکەیت کە بە تەنها کێکێک هەڵدەگرێت.

When he does, reality aligns with expectations,

کاتێک دەکەوێت، ڕاستەقینە و پێشبینی کردن ڕاستەوانە دەبن،

and so that is not irony.

بۆیە ئەمە مایەی گاڵتە نییە.

But what if the sassy sidekick walked in wearing a gold medal

بەڵام چی ئەگەر کەسەکە بە مەدالیای زێرەوە بێتە ژوور

that he'd won at the cake walking event

کە لە پێشبڕکێی هەڵگرتنی کێک بەدەستی هێناوە

at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996?

لە ئۆڵۆمپیادی ئەتڵەنتای ساڵی ١٩٩٦؟

What if that sidekick was a professional cake carrier?

چی ئەگەر کەسەکە پسپۆڕبێت لە هەڵگرتنی کێک؟

Then, maybe there would have been a reasonable expectation

کەواتە، لەوانەیە پێشبینی شیاوتر بکەیت

that he would have been more skilled

چونکە دەکرێت زۆر شارەزاتربێت

when carrying a ridiculously large cake.

کاتێک کێکی گەورەی نەشیاو هەڵدەگرێت.

Then, when that reasonable expectation was not met by the tripping sidekick,

دواتر، ئەگەر پێشبینییەکانت ڕاست دەرنەچوون و کەسەکە کەوت،

irony would have been exemplified.

ئەمەیان دەکرێت مایەی گاڵتەبێت.

Another example.

نموونەیەکی تر.

A senior citizen texting and blogging.

کەسێکی پایەبەرز نامە دەنێرێت و بلۆگێک دروست دەکات.

The common and reasonable expectation

پێشبینییە باو و شیاوەکان

of more mature men and women

بۆ پیاوان و ئافرەتانی پێگەیشتوو ئەوەیە کە

is that they don't like or know technology,

لە تەکنەلۆژیا نازانن و حەزی پێ ناکەن،

that they have a hard time turning on a computer,

بەکارهێنانی کۆمپیتەر لایان گران و ئەستەمە،

or that they have the old brick cell phones from the 1980s.

ئەوان مۆبایلە کۆنەکانیان لە ١٩٨٠ـکانەوە هەیە.

One should not expect them to be connected,

ناکرێت پێشبینی بکەیت پەیوەندی ببەستن،

high-tech,

تەکنەلۆژیای بەرز،

or savvy enough to text

یان لەگەڵ نامە نووسین

or to be blogging,

یان لەگەڵ ناردنی بلۆگدا،

which must seem like some sort of newfangled thing

کە بۆ ئەوان شتێکی نوێیە

that "back in my day," they never had.

و لە سەردەمی ئەواندا، هەرگیز نەبووە.

So when Granny pulls out her smart phone

کەواتە کاتێک داپیرەت مۆبایلە زیرەکەکەی دەردەهێنێت

to post pictures of her dentures

وێنەی تاقمی ددانە دەستکردەکەی

یان وێنەی نەوەکانی بڵاودەکاتەوە،

or her grandkids,

irony ensues.

گاڵتە دروست دەبێت.

Reasonable expectations of the situation are not met.

پێشبینییە شیاوەکانی بارودۆخەکە هاوتانین.

That is irony.

بۆیە ئەمە مایەی گاڵتەیە.

So while the cake dropper might not be ironic,

بۆیە لەکاتی کەوتنی کێکەکە شایەنی گاڵتە نییە،

there are all kinds of situations in life that are.

چەندان بارودۆخی تر هەن لە ژیاندا کە شایەنی گاڵتەن.

Go out, and find those true examples of irony.

بڕۆ دەرەوە، و بگەڕێ بەدوای نموونە ڕاستەقینەکانی گاڵتەپێکردن.
