Picture this:

وا دابنێ:

خۆت و هاوڕێکەت سەیری بەرنامەیەکی پێکەنیناوی دەکەن و

your friend and you are watching a sitcom

and a sassy sidekick walks into a room,

کەسێکی یارمەتیدەری بێزارکەر دێتە ژوورەوە،

carrying a four-tiered wedding cake.

بە کێکی چوار قاتی هاوسەرگیرییەوە.

He trips,

falls,

ساتمەیەک دەکات و

دەکەوێت،

and face-plants into the cake.

دەم و چاوی دەکەوێتە ناو کێکە.

Your friend doubles over with laughter and says,

هاوڕێکەت دای لەقاقای پێکەنین و گوتی،

"It's so ridiculous! So ironic!"

"ئەمە زۆر هەزەلییە! زۆر پێکەنیناوییە"!

Well, quick, what do you do?

باشە، خێرا بە، تۆ چی دەکەیت؟

Do you laugh along with the laugh track

تۆش وەکو ئەو پێدەکینیت و

and let this grievous misinterpretation of irony go?

ڕێگە دەدەیت کە ئەو بنەما هەڵەیەی گاڵتە کردنە هەر ئاوا بڕوات؟

Or, do you throw caution to the wind

یان ڕێگە نادەیت و بیر دەکەیتەوە و

and explain the true meaning of irony?

مانا ڕاستەکەی گاڵتە کردن ڕوون دەکەیتەوە؟

If you're me, you choose the latter.

ئەگەر وەکو من بکەیت، دووەم هەڵبژاردن هەڵدەبژێریت.

Unfortunately, irony has been completely misunderstood.

بەداخەوە، ئێمە زۆر هەڵه لە گاڵتە کردن تێگەیشتووین.

ڕاهاتووین ئەو وشەیە بەکار بهێنین

We tend to throw out that term

whenever we see something funny or coincidental.

هەرکاتێک شتێکی پێکەنیناویمان بینی.

And while many examples of true irony can be funny,

و لە کاتێکدا زۆرێک لە نموونەکانی گاڵتە کردن دەکرێت پێکەنیناوی بن،

that is not the driving factor of being ironic.

بەڵام مانای ئەوە نییە کە شایەنی گاڵتە پێ کردن بێت.

A situation is only ironic if what happens

تەنها بارودۆخێک شایەنی گاڵتەپێ کردنە کە ئەوەی ڕوودەدات

is the exact opposite of what was expected.

ڕێک پێچەوانەی ئەوە بێت کە پێشبینی دەکرێت.

If you expect A, but get B,

بۆ نموونە تۆ پێشبینی A دەکەیت ڕووبدات بەڵام B ڕوودەدات،

then you have irony.

ئەمە گاڵتەیە.

Let's take the slap-stick cake situation as an example.

با نموونەی کێکەکە وەربگرین کە دەموچاوی کەسێکی کەوتە ناو.

When someone walks in precariously balancing something

کاتێک کەسێک شتێکی هەڵ گرتووە کە نابێیت بە تەنها هەڵی بگرێت،

that shouldn't be carried alone,

بۆیە ناتوانێت هاوسەنگی بپارێزیت،

trips, falls, and makes a mess,

ساتمە دەکات و دەکەوێت و ناوەکە دەشێوێنێت،

پێکەنیناوییە، بەڵام شایەنی گاڵتە پێکردن نییە.

it is funny, but it's not ironic.

In fact, you probably expect someone

لە ڕاستیدا، تۆ لەوانەیە پێشبینی کەوتنی کەسێک بکەیت

who is single-handedly carrying a huge cake to trip.

کە بەتەنها کێکی گەورەی هەڵگرتووە.

When he does, reality aligns with expectations,

کاتێک دەکەوێت، ڕاستی و پێشبینی ڕاستەوانە دەبن،

and so that is not irony.

بۆیە ئەمە شایەنی گاڵتە پێکردن نییە.

But what if the sassy sidekick walked in wearing a gold medal

بەڵام چی ئەگەر یارمەتیدەرە بێزارکەرەکە بە مەدالیای زێرەوە بێتە ژوور کە

that he'd won at the cake walking event

کە لە پێشبڕکێی هەڵگرتنی کێک بەدەستی هێناوە

at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996?

لە ئۆڵۆمپیاتی ئەتلانتای ساڵی ١٩٩٦؟

What if that sidekick was a professional cake carrier?

چی ئەگەر ئەو کەسەی کێکەکەی هەڵگرتووە پسپۆڕ بێت لە هەڵگرتنی کێک؟

Then, maybe there would have been a reasonable expectation

لەوانەیە تۆ پێشبینی گونجاوتر بکەیت

that he would have been more skilled

چونکە دەکرێت زۆر شارەزاتر بێت

when carrying a ridiculously large cake.

کاتێک کێکی گەورەی نەگونجاو هەڵ دەگرێت.

Then, when that reasonable expectation was not met by the tripping sidekick,

پاشان ئەگەر پێشبینییەکانت ڕاست دەرنەچوون و کوڕەکە کەوت،

irony would have been exemplified.

ئەمەیان دەکرێت شایەنی گاڵتە پێ کردن بێت.

Another example.

نمونەیەکی تر.

A senior citizen texting and blogging.

کەسێکی بەتەمەن دەیەوێت نامە بنێرێت و بلۆگێک بنووسێت.

The common and reasonable expectation

پێشبینییە باو و گونجاوەکان

of more mature men and women

بۆ پیاو و ئافرەتە بەتەمەنەکان ئەوەیە کە

is that they don't like or know technology,

زۆر لە تەکنەلۆجیا نازانن و حەزی پێ ناکەن،

that they have a hard time turning on a computer,

بەکارهێنانی کۆمپیتەر لایان زۆر گران و ئەستەمە،

or that they have the old brick cell phones from the 1980s.

ئەوان موبایلە لاکێشە کۆنەکانی ١٩٨٠کانیان هەیە.

One should not expect them to be connected,

ناکرێت پێشبینی ئەوە بکەیت ئەوان کێشەییان نەبێت

high-tech,

لەگەڵ تەکنەلۆجیای سەردەم

or savvy enough to text

یان لەگەڵ نامە ناردن

or to be blogging,

یان لەگەڵ نووسنی بلۆگدا،

which must seem like some sort of newfangled thing

چونکە بۆ ئەوان شتێکی زۆر نوێ و جیاوازە

that "back in my day," they never had.

کە لە سەردەمی ئەواندا بوونی نەبووە.

So when Granny pulls out her smart phone

کەواتە کاتێک داپیرەت مۆبایلەکەی دەردێنیت و

to post pictures of her dentures

وێنەی تاقمی ددانەکەی یان

or her grandkids,

وێنەی نەوەکانی بڵاو دەکاتەوە،

irony ensues.

گاڵتەکردن پەیدا دەبێت.

Reasonable expectations of the situation are not met.

لەبەر ئەوەی پێشبینییەکانت بۆ ئەم دۆخە ڕاست دەرناچێت،

That is irony.

بۆیە ئەمە تەوسە.

So while the cake dropper might not be ironic,

بۆیە کە کەوتنی کێکەکە شایەنی گاڵتە پێ کردن نییە،

there are all kinds of situations in life that are.

بەڵام زۆر بارودۆخ هەیە لە ژیاندا کە شایەنی گاڵتە پێ کردنە.

Go out, and find those true examples of irony.

بۆیە لە دەرەوە بگەڕێ و ئەو دۆخانە بدۆزەوە کە شایەنی گاڵتە پێ کردنن.
