But how did the festive Christmas tradition of kissing under mistletoe

به‌ڵام جه‌ژنی كریسمه‌س چۆن بوو نه‌ریتی ماچكردن له‌ژێر مژدا

come about?

The long lived custom intertwines the mythology and biology

كه‌ ده‌مێكه‌ تێكه‌ڵ بونی میتۆلۆجیاو بایۆلۆجی ڕویداوه‌

of this intriguing plant.

له‌م ڕوه‌كه‌ سه‌رنجڕاكێشه‌.

There are more than 1,000 species of mistletoe which grows the world over.

زیاتر له‌ هه‌زار جۆر له‌م ڕوه‌كه‌ هه‌یه‌،

كه‌ جیهان به‌سه‌ر ده‌به‌ن.

In fact, the ancient Europeans were so captivated

له‌ ڕاستیدا،ئه‌ورووپیه‌ كۆنه‌كان زۆر به‌دیل گیرا بوون

by the plant’s unusual growth habits that they included it in their legends

به‌هۆی خووی گه‌شه‌ی نا ئاسایی ڕوه‌كه‌كه‌وه

كه‌ له‌ ئه‌فسانه‌كانیاندا ده‌یانكرد و ئه‌فسانه‌كان.له‌ ڕۆمای كۆندا

and myths.

In ancient Rome, Pliny the Elder described how

the Druid priesthood in ancient England believed that mistletoe

was a plant dropped down from heaven by the gods;

that explained its unlikely position amongst the high branches

of certain trees.

They also believed it had powers of healing and bestowing fertility.

Meanwhile, Scandinavian legends told of the plant’s mystical qualities

in the story of the god Baldur and his adoring mother, Frigg,

له‌ چیڕۆكی خودای باڵدار ودایكه‌ خۆشه‌ویسته‌كه‌ی فڕێگ،

goddess of love, marriage and fertility.

خواوه‌ندی خۆشه‌ویستی ،و هاوسه‌رگیری ،و به‌پیتبوون.

Frigg loved her son so much that she commanded every plant,

فریگ زۆر حه‌زی له‌ كوڕ بوو كه‌ فه‌رمانی به‌ هه‌موو ڕوه‌كێك كرد،

animal and inanimate object to vow they’d never harm him.

In her fervor, however, she overlooked the mistletoe.

The mischievous god Loki realized this oversight,

كه‌ خودایه‌كی خراپ چاوێریانه‌

and pierced Baldur’s heart with an arrow carved from a mistletoe branch.

ودڵی كه‌چه‌ڵه‌كان كون ده‌كات به‌ تیرێك

له‌ لقێكی میستوودا نه‌خشێنراوه‌.

Frigg cried tears of such sadness that they formed

فریگ فرمێسكی ئه‌و خه‌مانه‌ی ده‌ڕشت

كه‌ ئه‌وان تووی گوڵێكی بۆنخۆشیان پێكهێنا،

the mistletoe’s pearly berries,

making the other gods pity her and agree to resurrect Baldur.

دروستكردنی خواوه‌ندێكی به‌د وڕازی كردنی بۆ زیندووكردنه‌وه‌ی باڵدار.

Hearing the news, Frigg became so overjoyed that she transformed

به‌ بیستنی هه‌واڵه‌كان،فریگ زۆر دڵ خۆش بوو

كه‌ ئه‌و گوڵه‌ بۆنخۆشه‌كه‌ی گۆڕی له‌ هێمای مردنه‌وه‌

the mistletoe from a symbol of death into one of peace and love.

بۆ یه‌كێك له‌ ئاشتی و خۆشه‌ویستی.

She mandated a one day truce for all fights

ئه‌وفه‌رمانی به‌ ئاگربه‌ستێكی یه‌ك ڕۆژه‌ بۆهه‌موو شه‌ڕه‌كان،

and that everyone embraced beneath its branches when they passed

وهه‌مووكه‌سێك له‌ باوه‌ش ده‌گرێت له‌ ژێر لقه‌كانیه‌وه‌ كاتێك تێپه‌ڕین

to spread more love into the world.

بۆ بڵاوكردنه‌وه‌ی خۆشه‌ویستی له‌ هه‌موو جیهان.

In the 17th century, British colonists arriving in the New World

له‌ سه‌ده‌ی 17 ه‌دا.

كه‌ كۆڵۆنیالیسته‌كانی به‌ڕیتانیا ده‌گه‌یشتنه‌ جیهانی نوێ

found a different but very similar looking species of mistletoe.

جیاوازیه‌كی دۆزیه‌وه‌،به‌ڵام زۆر له‌یه‌ك ده‌چن،

جۆره‌كانی گوڵی بۆن خۆش.

They applied it to these tales of magic, fertility and love,

به‌سه‌ر ئه‌م چیڕۆكانه‌دا جێبه‌جێیان كرد جادوو،به‌پیت ،وخۆشه‌ویستی،

spreading the mistletoe hanging tradition from Europe into America.

بڵاوبونه‌وه‌ی هه‌ڵواسراوی گوڵی بۆن خۆش له‌ ئه‌وروپا بۆ ئه‌مه‌ریكا.

له‌سه‌ده‌ی 18دا،

By the 18th century, people in Britain had turned this

خه‌ڵكی به‌ریتانیا ئه‌مه‌یان هه‌ڵدایه‌وه‌ له‌ نه‌ریتێكی كریسمه‌سدا،

into a Christmas tradition.

But this custom comes down to more than just human imagination.

به‌ڵأم ئه‌م نه‌ریتیانه‌ بۆ زیاتر دێته‌ خواره‌وه‌ ته‌نیا خه‌یاڵی مرۆڤه‌

All of it was inspired by the plant’s intriguing biology.

هه‌موو ئیلهامی بۆ ڕووه‌كه‌كه‌ بوو بایه‌لۆجی سه‌رنجڕاكێش.

We see mistletoe as a festive decoration, but draped on tree boughs in the wild,

ئێمه‌ ئه‌و گوڵه‌ وه‌ك دیكۆرێكی خۆش ده‌بینین،

به‌ڵام به‌ داره‌وه‌ له‌ كێوی دا به‌ ڕوه‌كێكی ئیفلیج ناسراوه‌.

it’s known as a partly parasitic plant.

Mistletoe relies on modified roots called haustoria

میستلیتۆ پشت به‌ڕه‌گه‌ گۆڕانكاریه‌كان ده‌به‌ستێت پێێ ده‌ڵێن هاووشتۆریا

that penetrate the tree bark and siphon off the water and minerals

كه‌به‌ داره‌كه‌ دائه‌چێنێت

وسیفۆن له‌ ئاو كانزاكان

داره‌كان داره‌كانیان به‌رز ده‌كه‌ن

trees carry up their trunks.

To colonize nearby trees with its seeds,

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی داره‌كانی نزیك به‌ تۆوی خۆی داگیر بكه‌ن،

mistletoe depends on birds and other creatures

پشت به‌ باڵنده‌كان ده‌به‌ستێتت و بونه‌وه‌ره‌كانی تر

to do the dispersing.

بۆ ئه‌نجامدانی په‌رته‌وازی.

Birds that eat the mistletoe’s sticky white berries

ئه‌و باڵندانه‌ی ئه‌و ڕوه‌كه‌ ده‌خۆن تووی سپی لكێنه‌ره‌

sometimes get rid of the gluey seeds by wiping them off onto tree bark,

هه‌ندێك جار له‌ تۆوی قاوی ڕزگارم ده‌بێت به‌ سڕینه‌وه‌یان له‌سه‌ر داره‌كه‌.

or with a bit of luck,

یان به‌ كه‌مێك به‌خت،تۆوی هه‌رس نه‌كراو له‌سه‌ر دارێك

they excrete the indigestible seed onto a tree where it germinates

كه‌تێیدا ده‌چه‌سپێت و ده‌ست ده‌كات به‌ گه‌وره‌ بوون.

and starts to grow.

With its resilience and foliage that stays lush

به‌ خؤڕاگری و به‌له‌می كه‌ به‌ تامه‌

even while the surrounding trees lose their leaves,

ته‌نانه‌ت كاتێك كه‌ داره‌كانی ده‌وروبه‌ری گه‌ڵأكانیان له‌ ده‌ست ده‌ده‌ن،

you can see why mistletoe captivated our superstitious ancestors.

تۆ ده‌توانیت بیبینیت كه‌ بۆچی باوباپیران دیلكراوه‌.

They saw these as signs of the plant’s magical qualities and fertility.

ئه‌مانه‌یان وه‌ك نیشانه‌ی ڕوه‌كه‌كه‌ بینی و به‌ پیت بوون.

ته‌نانه‌ت ئه‌مڕؤ،ئه‌م ڕوه‌كانه‌ سه‌رسامی ده‌كات

Even today, the mistletoe inspires wonder

with the diversity of wildlife it supports.

له‌گه‌ڵ جیاوازی ژیانی كێوی پشتگیری ده‌كات.

More than just a parasite, it’s also known as a keystone species.

زیاتر له‌ مشه‌ خۆرێك،هه‌روه‌ها زانراوه‌ وه‌ك جۆره‌ به‌ردی كێل.

It's eaten by a diversity of animals, including deer, elk, squirrels, chipmunks,

كه‌ له‌لایه‌ن ئاژه‌ڵی هه‌مه‌جۆره‌وه‌ ده‌خورێت،

ئاسك ده‌گرێته‌وه‌،

قه‌ل،

سمۆره‌،

چیپمونه‌كان،

porcupines, robins, bluebirds, mourning doves,

حه‌یوانه‌كان،

ناوی باڵنده‌یه‌كه‌،

باڵنده‌ شینه‌كان

كۆتری به‌یانی،

and the butterfly genus Delius.

و په‌پوله‌ی دێلاس.

Some mistletoe species produce dense bushes,

هه‌ندێك جۆری ڕوه‌كی چڕ به‌رهه‌م ده‌هێنن،

which are excellent nesting locations for a variety of birds.

كه‌ هوولانه‌یه‌كی زۆر باشه‌ بۆباڵنده‌ی جۆراوجۆر.

And despite their parasitic relationship with trees,

وسه‌ره‌ڕای مشه‌خۆریان په‌یوه‌ندیان له‌گه‌ڵ دار هه‌یه‌،

mistletoes can also help other plants.

میستۆس ده‌توانی یارمه‌تی ڕوه‌كه‌كانی تر بدا.

For instance, juniper sprouts near mistletoe to benefit

بۆ نمونه‌، چه‌كه‌ره‌كردنی سنه‌وبه‌ر له‌ نزیك ڕوه‌كی بۆن خۆش

بۆ سود وه‌رگرتن له‌ باڵنده‌یی توویی

from the visiting berry-eating birds.

Through the many benefits it provides,

له‌ڕێگه‌ی ئه‌و سوده‌ زۆره‌ی ده‌یدات كاریگه‌ری له‌سه‌ر جیاوازی هه‌یه‌،

mistletoe influences diversity and allows ecosystems to flourish.

و ڕێگه‌ به‌ ژینگه‌كان ده‌دات كه‌ گه‌شانه‌وه‌ بكه‌ن.

You might even say, that for this iconic plant,

له‌وانه‌یه‌ تۆ بڵێێ كه‌ بۆ ئه‌م ڕوه‌كه‌ ژیان لاسایكردنه‌وه‌یه‌كه‌.

life imitates legend.

In the wild, mistletoe has the power to bring things together.

له‌ شوێنێكی دڕندانه‌،هێزی هه‌یه‌ تاوه‌كو شته‌كان كۆبكاته‌وه‌

And in our own traditions we see that happening too.

وله‌ نه‌ریتی ئێمه‌دا،ده‌بینین ئه‌وه‌ش ڕوده‌دات.
