The sight of mistletoe may either send you scurrying

يمكنُ لرؤية نبات الدبق الطفيلي إمّا أن يجعلك تسرعُ في خطواتك،

or if you have your eye on someone,

أو إن كنت معجباً بشخص ما،

awaiting an opportunity beneath its snow white berries.

أن تنتظر الفرصة تحت ثمارها للبية ناصعة البياض كالثلج

But how did the festive Christmas tradition of kissing under mistletoe

لكن كيف حدث تقليد التقبيل تحت نبتة الهدال خلال الاحتفال بعيد الميلاد؟

come about?

The long lived custom intertwines the mythology and biology

يتضافرُ العُرف طويل الأجل مع علمي الأساطير والأحياء

of this intriguing plant.

لهذه النبتة الغريبة.

There are more than 1,000 species of mistletoe which grows the world over.

هناك أكثر من 1،000 نوع من نبتة الهدال التي تنمو في أنحاء العالم.

In fact, the ancient Europeans were so captivated

في الحقيقة، انجذب الأوروبيون القدماء

by the plant’s unusual growth habits that they included it in their legends

and myths.

In ancient Rome, Pliny the Elder described how

the Druid priesthood in ancient England believed that mistletoe

اعتقدوا أن نبتة الهدال سقطت على الأرض من الجنة من قِبَل الآلهة.

was a plant dropped down from heaven by the gods;

that explained its unlikely position amongst the high branches

هذا يفسّر مكانها البعيد المنعزل بين الفروع العالية

of certain trees.

لأشجار معيّنة.

They also believed it had powers of healing and bestowing fertility.

واعتقدوا أيضاً أن لديها قوة خارفة للشفاء ومنح الخصوبة.

Meanwhile, Scandinavian legends told of the plant’s mystical qualities

في الوقت نفسه، تحدثت الأسطورة الإسكندنافية عن الخصائص الغامضة للنبتة

in the story of the god Baldur and his adoring mother, Frigg,

في قصة الإله بالدر وأمه المحبة له فريجا،

goddess of love, marriage and fertility.

Frigg loved her son so much that she commanded every plant,

أحبّت فريجا ابنها كثيراً لدرجة أنّها أمرت كل نبتة وحيوان،

animal and inanimate object to vow they’d never harm him.

وجماد أن يتعهدوا بأن لا يضروه أبداً.

In her fervor, however, she overlooked the mistletoe.

ورغم حماسها إلا أنها غفلت عن نبتة الهدال.

The mischievous god Loki realized this oversight,

أدرك إله الأذى لوكي هذا الإغفال،

and pierced Baldur’s heart with an arrow carved from a mistletoe branch.

واخترق قلب بالدر بسهم منحوت من غصن الهدال.

Frigg cried tears of such sadness that they formed

بكت فريجا دموعاً حزينة

التي شكّلت الثمار اللبية اللؤلوية لنبتة الهدال،

the mistletoe’s pearly berries,

making the other gods pity her and agree to resurrect Baldur.

مما جعل الآلهة يشعرون بالشفقة تجاهها ويوافقون على إحياء بالدر.

Hearing the news, Frigg became so overjoyed that she transformed

وبسماعها هذه الأخبار، شعرت بالسعادة الغامرة.

the mistletoe from a symbol of death into one of peace and love.

She mandated a one day truce for all fights

and that everyone embraced beneath its branches when they passed

وأن يتعانق الجميع عندما يمرّون تحت أغصانها

to spread more love into the world.

In the 17th century, British colonists arriving in the New World

في القرن السابع عشر، وصل المستعمرون البريطانيون إلى العالم الجديد.

found a different but very similar looking species of mistletoe.

واكتشفوا أنواعاً مختلفة، ولكنها مشابهة لنبتة الهدال في الشكل.

They applied it to these tales of magic, fertility and love,

وقد طبّقوها على هذه الحكايات من السحر والخصوبة والحبّ،

spreading the mistletoe hanging tradition from Europe into America.

مما نشر تقليد تعليق الهدال من أوروبا إلى أمريكا.

By the 18th century, people in Britain had turned this

وبحلول القرن الثامن عشر،

حوّل سكان بريطانيا هذا التقليد في عيد الميلاد،

into a Christmas tradition.

But this custom comes down to more than just human imagination.

لكنّ أصبحت هذه العادة أكثر من مجرد خيال بشري.

All of it was inspired by the plant’s intriguing biology.

واستوحيَ كل هذا من طبيعة النبتة الغريبة.

We see mistletoe as a festive decoration, but draped on tree boughs in the wild,

نرى الهدال كزينة احتفالية.

لكن تدليها على أغصان الشجرة في البريّة، فإنها تُعرفُ كنبتة طفيلية جزئياً.

it’s known as a partly parasitic plant.

Mistletoe relies on modified roots called haustoria

يعتمد نبات الهدال على جذور معدّلة تدعى المراشف المتطفلة

that penetrate the tree bark and siphon off the water and minerals

التي تخترق لحاء الشجر وتمتصّ الماء والأملاح المعدنية

trees carry up their trunks.

التي تحملها الأشجار لجذوعها.

To colonize nearby trees with its seeds,

لتستقر في الأشجار المجاورة بصحبة بذورها،

mistletoe depends on birds and other creatures

تعتمد نبتة الهدال على الطيور والمخلوقات الأخرى

to do the dispersing.

Birds that eat the mistletoe’s sticky white berries

فالطيورُ التي تأكل ثمار الهدال اللبية البيضاء اللّزجة

sometimes get rid of the gluey seeds by wiping them off onto tree bark,

تتخلص أحياناً من البذور الغروية عن طريق مسحهم على لحاء الشجرة.

or with a bit of luck,

أو بالقليل من الحظ، فإنها تفرزُ البذور غير القابلة للهضم على الشجرة

they excrete the indigestible seed onto a tree where it germinates

حيث تنبتُ وتبدأ بالنمو.

and starts to grow.

With its resilience and foliage that stays lush

بمرونتها وأوراقها التي تبقى مورقة خضراء،

even while the surrounding trees lose their leaves,

you can see why mistletoe captivated our superstitious ancestors.

They saw these as signs of the plant’s magical qualities and fertility.

Even today, the mistletoe inspires wonder

حتى اليوم، تُثيرُ النبتة العجب

with the diversity of wildlife it supports.

بسبب تنوع الحياة البريّة التي تدعمها.

More than just a parasite, it’s also known as a keystone species.

إنها أكثر من مجرّد نبته طفيلية، تعرف أيضاً أنها داعم بيئي لمخلوقات أخرى

It's eaten by a diversity of animals, including deer, elk, squirrels, chipmunks,

تؤكل من قبل أنواع مختلفة من الحيوانات، تتضمن الغزلان والأيائل والسناجب

porcupines, robins, bluebirds, mourning doves,

and the butterfly genus Delius.

Some mistletoe species produce dense bushes,

mistletoes can also help other plants.

For instance, juniper sprouts near mistletoe to benefit

from the visiting berry-eating birds.

Through the many benefits it provides,

بين العديد من الفوائد التي يقدمها،

mistletoe influences diversity and allows ecosystems to flourish.

فإن الهدال يؤثر على التنوع، ويسمح للنظام البيئي أن يزدهر.

You might even say, that for this iconic plant,

يمكنك القول حتى أن هذا النبات الرمزي

life imitates legend.

يحاكي حياة أسطورية.

In the wild, mistletoe has the power to bring things together.

الهدال على الجمع بين الأشياء.

And in our own traditions we see that happening too.

وفي تقاليدنا الخاصّة، نرى ذلك يحدث أيضاً.
