Well, maybe.

باشە لەوانەیە.

Depending on the attitude

بەپێی هەڵسوكەوتەكەیە

and tone of voice behind these lines,

و ئاوازی دەنگ لە دوای ئەم دەربڕینانە،

they very well may be compliments.

لەوانەیە ستایشكردنێکی زۆر باش بێت ،

They may also be, though,

لەوانەیە هەروەها، سەرەڕای ئەوەش،

pointed and attacking lines.

دەربڕینی ڕەخنە و هێرش بێت.

This slight change of attitude behind the lines

ئەم گۆڕانكاریە بچوكانە لە هەڵسوكەوت لە دوای دەربڕین

reveals what we call verbal irony.

ئەوە ئاشكرا دەكات كە پێی دەگوترێ تەوسی زارەکیە.

So when someone says, "Great weather we're having,"

لەبەر ئەوە كاتێك دەڵێت "كەش و هەوایەكی خۆشمان هەیە "،

it is quite possible that the person really means that

ئەوا بە دڵنیاییەوە مەبەستی ئەوەیە کە

if the sun is shining,

ئەگەر خۆر درەوشاوەیە،

the birds are singing,

باڵندەكان دەخوێنن،

and the wind is calm.

و بایەكەش هێمنە.

But if the weather is horrible,

بەڵام گەر كەش وهەوا ناخۆش بێت،

the clouds are looming,

هەورەكان چڕ بێت،

and the wind is a raging tempest,

و بایێکی بەهێز هەڵی کردبێت،

and someone says, "Great weather we're having,"

و كەسێك بڵێت ،"كەش و هەوایەكی خۆشمان هەیە"،

he probably doesn't actually mean that.

ئەو لەوانەیە بەڕاستی مەبەستی ئەوە نەبێت.

He probably means that the weather is horrible,

ئەو لەوانەیە مەبەستی ئەوە بێت كەش و هەوایەكی ناخۆشە،

but he has said the opposite.

بەڵام ئەو بەپێچەوانەوە قسە بکات.

This is verbal irony

ئەمە تەوسی زارەکیە

when the speaker says the opposite of what he means.

كاتێك قسەكەر بەپێچەوانەی مەبەستی قسە دەکات.

دەزانم چۆن بیر دەكەیەوە،

I know what you're thinking.

Isn't this sarcasm,

ئایا ئەمە گاڵتە پێ کردن نییە،

isn't the speaker being sarcastic?

قسەکەرە زۆر قۆشمەچی نییە؟

Yes.

بەڵێ.

When a speaker says the opposite of what he means,

كە قسەكەر شتێك دەڵێ پێچەوانەی ئەوەی كە مەبەستیەتی،

that is verbal irony.

ئەمە تەوسی زارەکیە.

When a speaker then goes the step farther

كاتێك قسەكەر هەنگاوێك دورتر دەڕوات

to mean the opposite of what he says

مەبەستی پێچەوانەی ئەوە بێت كە دەیڵێت

and seeks to be a little pointed and mean,

و تۆزێک بە مەبەست و بێتامانە قسەی کرد،

like he's making fun of something,

وەك ئەوەی گاڵتە بەشتێک بکات ،

then you have sarcasm.

ئەمەی پێی دەڵێن فشەکردن.

Take the second example:

نموونەی دووەم وەربگرە:

"Awesome job!"

" كارێكی نایابە!"

Someone accomplishing his life-long dream:

كەسێك خەونی ژیانی بەدیهێناوە:

awesome!

نایابە!

Someone winning a sports championship:

كەسێك پاڵەوانی وەرزشی بردۆتەوە:

awesome!

نایابە!

Someone rear-ends another car:

كەسێك لە پشتەوەی ئۆتۆمبێلێكی تری داوە:

not awesome.

نایاب نییە.

So when the passenger says, "Awesome job!"

كاتێك كە سەرنشینێك دەڵێ،" كارێكی نایابە"

they probably mean the opposite

ڕێک مەبەستی پێچەوانەیە

with a hint of poking fun.

کە نیشانەیەکە لە گاڵتە کردن.

That is verbal irony and that is sarcastic.

ئەمە گاڵتە پێ کردن و فشە پێ کردنە.

"You're a talented athlete," said to an Olympian:

بە وەرزشوانە ئۆڵۆمپییەکە دەڵێت: " تۆ وەرزشوانێكی بە توانای"

authentic, no verbal irony present.

ئەمە ڕاستییە و هیچ گاڵتەیەکی تێدا نییە.

Said to the klutzy kid tripping into English class

ئەگەر ئەمە بە خوێندکارێکی گێژ بڵێ کە دێتە پۆلەوە

and spilling his books and pencil case all over the room,

کە هەموو پێنووس و پەرتوکەکانی لە دەست دەکەوێت،

now that is just harsh and verbally ironic

ئێستا ئەمە دڵڕەقانەیە و گاڵتەیەكی زارەكیانەیە

because what you said is not what you meant.

چونكە ئەوەی تۆ دەیڵێیت ئەوە نییە كە مەبەستتە.

That is verbal irony.

ئەمە گاڵتەی زارەکییە.

You have said the opposite of what you mean.

تۆ ئەوە دەڵێیت كە پێچەوانەكەت مەبەستە.

Additionally, since you have the intention

سەرەڕای ئەوەش، مادام نیازت

of mocking this poor person,

گاڵتە كردن بە كەسانی داماو،

you have not only been verbally ironic,

ئەوە تۆ تەنها گاڵتە پێکەر نیت،

but sarcastic as well.

بەڵکو فشە پێکەرێکیشی.

Beware, though.

ئاگاداربە، سەرەڕای ئەوەش.

While all sarcasm fits the definition of verbal irony,

لە کاتێکدا فشە پێکردنیش پێناسەی گاڵتە پێ کردن وەر دەگرێت

not all verbal irony is sarcastic.

بەڵام هەموو تەوسێک فشە پێ کردن نین.

Verbal irony is where what is meant

تەوس بریتییە لە دەربڕینی

is the opposite of what is said,

پێچەوانەی مەبەستت،

while sarcasm adds that little punch of attitude.

لە کاتێکدا فشە پێکردن جیاوازە و بەد ڕەفتاری تێدایە

There are times, though,

سەڕەڕای، هەندێک جار،

where another layer of meaning can be present

دەکرێ هەمان مانا ببەخشێت و فشە پێ کردنی پێوە دیار بێت

without that sarcastic tone.

بەبێ ئاوازی فشە پێ کردن.

Alright, now go out there

باشە، ئێستا بچۆ دەرەوە

and find those examples of verbal irony and sarcasm.

و نموونەی تەوس و گاڵتە پێ کردنەکان دیاری بکە.
