You're from Toronto, yeah? I’m from Toronto, yeah.

Actually, I should say “Toronto”  like non-Torontonians, but…

Very good, uh, so let's see now where do we begin? You've been teaching  

အရမ်းကောင်းတယ်၊ အိုး၊ ဒါဆို ငါတို့ဘယ်မှာစကြမလဲဆိုတာ အခုပဲကြည့်ရအောင်။

English for 24 years in total - a long time. And you've lived in so many different countries

around the world. So what inspired you

originally to move away from Canada? And where was your first destination? 

ကနေဒါကနေ ထွက်ခွာဖို့ အစတုန်းက ဘာက သင့်ကို လှုံ့ဆော်ပေးတာလဲ။ မင်းရဲ့ပထမဆုံးဦးတည်ရာက ဘယ်မှာလဲ။

And you can talk about that a little bit. So I was in… I was in Toronto. 

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒီအကြောင်း နည်းနည်းပြောလို့ရတယ်။ ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်လည်း တိုရွန်တိုမှာ ရှိနေတယ်။

And I loved traveling. So I just wanted to travel around the world. 

ပြီးတော့ ခရီးသွားရတာ ဝါသနာပါတယ်။ ဒါကြောင့် ကမ္ဘာအနှံ့ ခရီးထွက်ချင်ခဲ့တာ။

So originally, my first idea was  to, you know, learn how to cook. 

ဒါကြောင့် မူလက ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပထမဆုံး စိတ်ကူးက ဟင်းချက်နည်းကို သင်သိပါတယ်။

Maybe become a chef because  people have to eat everywhere. 

နေရာတိုင်းမှာ စားဖိုမှူးဆိုတော့ စားဖိုမှူးဖြစ်လာနိုင်တယ်။

I can always go somewhere  and find a job as a chef. 

ကျွန်တော် တစ်နေရာရာကို အမြဲသွားပြီး စားဖိုမှူးအဖြစ် အလုပ်ရှာနိုင်ပါတယ်။

So I went to culinary school for a year. I did that. 

ဒါနဲ့ အချက်အပြုတ်ကျောင်းကို တစ်နှစ်တက်ခဲ့တယ်။ ငါလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

I worked in a few restaurants and I  realized that I really hated that job. 

စားသောက်ဆိုင်အနည်းငယ်မှာ အလုပ်လုပ်ပြီး အဲဒီအလုပ်ကို အရမ်းမုန်းတီးနေတယ်ဆိုတာ သိလိုက်ရတယ်။

Oh, really. So I needed something else. 

အိုတကယ်ပဲလား။ ဒါကြောင့် တခြားတစ်ခုခုလိုနေတယ်။

And one day, I saw an advertisement, it said,  “Do you want to live overseas and teach English?” 

တစ်နေ့မှာ ကြော်ငြာတစ်ခုတွေ့တော့ "မင်း နိုင်ငံရပ်ခြားမှာ နေထိုင်ပြီး အင်္ဂလိပ်စာ သင်ပေးချင်တာလား။"

And I thought, “Yeah, I do.” So I applied. 

ပြီးတော့ "ဟုတ်ပြီ၊ ငါလုပ်တယ်" လို့တွေးလိုက်တယ်။ ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်လျှောက်ထားတယ်။

I got a job and I went to Japan. That was my first overseas teaching experience. 

အလုပ်ရပြီး ဂျပန်ကို သွားခဲ့တယ်။ အဲဒါက ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံး နိုင်ငံရပ်ခြား သင်ကြားရေး အတွေ့အကြုံပါ။

Very good. Where… what other countries have you lived in? 

အလွန်ကောင်းသည်။ ဘယ်မှာလဲ... တခြားဘယ်နိုင်ငံတွေမှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့လဲ။

So I lived in Japan. I actually taught in Toronto and Vancouver. 

ဒါကြောင့် ဂျပန်မှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။ တိုရွန်တိုနှင့် ဗန်ကူးဗားတို့တွင် အမှန်တကယ် သင်ကြားခဲ့သည်။

Oh, OK. In Canada.

I lived in Turkey, in Israel, and now in Korea. 

တူရကီ၊ အစ္စရေးမှာနေပြီး အခု ကိုရီးယားမှာ နေခဲ့တယ်။

Wow. So Israel was your last stop  before coming to live in Korea? 

အလို။ ဒါဆို ကိုရီးယားမှာနေထိုင်ဖို့ အစ္စရေးက မင်းရဲ့နောက်ဆုံးမှတ်တိုင်လား။

Uh, well a while ago, I went back to Canada  since then, but then I came here, again, yeah. 

အိုး၊ သိပ်မကြာသေးခင်ကတည်းက ကနေဒါကို ပြန်သွားတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် နောက်တော့ ဒီကို ထပ်ရောက်လာပြန်တယ်။

Oh, very good so… What made you come to Korea this time  

အိုး.. အရမ်းကောင်းတယ်... တခြားနိုင်ငံတော်တော်များများမှာ အတွေ့အကြုံတွေရလို့

having experience in so many other countries? Uh, I actually met a very nice Korean woman. 

ဒီတခေါက်ကိုရီးယားကို ဘာကရောက်လာတာ လဲ။ အိုး.. တကယ်ကို ချစ်စရာကောင်းတဲ့ ကိုရီးယားအမျိုးသမီးတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

Oh, there it is. Oh, there it is. 

အိုး၊ အဲဒါရှိတယ်။ အိုး၊ အဲဒါရှိတယ်။

So we came here. Plus, uh,  

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်တော် ဒီကိုလာခဲ့တယ်။ ထို့အပြင်၊

I live in Busan which is on right on the coast. So I live… I have the ocean right in front of me. 

ကျွန်ုပ်သည် ကမ်းခြေညာဘက်ရှိ ဘူဆန်တွင် နေထိုင်ပါသည်။ ဒါကြောင့် ငါအသက်ရှင်တယ်... ငါ့ရှေ့မှာ သမုဒ္ဒရာရှိတယ်။

I have the mountains right behind me. It's… it's a beautiful place to live.

Oh, Busan, uh, if… if our… our audience members  have not been… is one of the prettiest cities in  

အိုး၊ ဘူဆန်၊ အိုး၊ အကယ်၍ ငါတို့… ငါတို့ရဲ့ပရိသတ်တွေ မရောက်ဖူးသေးရင်…

Korea. There's no question, yeah. Yeah, it's a very nice place.

So let's talk about EngVid first. Sure.

Uh, the videos that you do for EngVid.com  that's engvid.com are insanely popular. 

အာ့၊ engvid.com ၏ EngVid.com အတွက် သင်ပြုလုပ်သော ဗီဒီယိုများသည် အလွန်ရေပန်းစားပါသည်။

They have nearly what - 2.96 million  subscribers I think was the number that I saw. 

သူတို့မှာ စာရင်းသွင်းသူ 2.96 သန်းနီးပါးရှိနေတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်မြင်ခဲ့ရတဲ့ အရေအတွက်ပါ။

That's just from my channel  – there’s other teachers. 

အဲဒါက ငါ့ချန်နယ်ကနေပဲ ရှိသေးတယ်၊ တခြားဆရာတွေလည်း ရှိတယ်။

Yeah, so that's incredible. They've made you one of the  

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ဒါ မယုံနိုင်စရာပဲ။ သူတို့က မင်းကို

most popular English teachers in the world. So how did that… how did that all come to be? 

ကမ္ဘာပေါ်မှာ အကျော်ကြားဆုံး အင်္ဂလိပ်စာဆရာတွေထဲက တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်စေခဲ့တယ်။ ဒါ ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်တာလဲ... ဒါတွေအားလုံး ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်လာတာလဲ။

Uh, interestingly, I worked for the  relatives of the guy who owns EngVid. 

စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာကောင်းတာက EngVid ပိုင်ဆိုင်တဲ့ ယောက်ျားလေးရဲ့ ဆွေမျိုးသားချင်းတွေအတွက် လုပ်ခဲ့တာ။

Like, while I was living in  Toronto, I was also teaching there. 

တိုရွန်တိုမှာ နေထိုင်စဉ်တုန်းကလည်း အဲဒီမှာပဲ စာသင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And I… and I worked with, uh, his mom. And when I came back from some travels,  

ပြီးတော့ ငါ… သူ့အမေနဲ့ အလုပ်လုပ်တယ်။ ခရီးတချို့ကနေ ပြန်လာတဲ့အခါ

she contacted me, and asked me,  “Do you want to make some videos?” 

သူက ကျွန်တော့်ကို ဆက်သွယ်ပြီး “ဗီဒီယိုရိုက်ချင်လား” လို့ မေးတယ်။

Because she knows I know how to teach. And I know English, and world experience,  

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ဆိုတော့ သူက ဘယ်လို သင်ပေးရမလဲ သိတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ အင်္ဂလိပ်စာနဲ့ ကမ္ဘာအတွေ့အကြုံကို သိတယ်၊

so I said, “Yeah, sure. I’ll go try it.” And I did it. 

ဒါကြောင့် “ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ ဟုတ်ပါတယ်။ ငါသွားစမ်းလိုက်မယ်။" ငါလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

And it took off. And I have kept doing it. 

ပြီးတော့ ပြတ်သွားတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ ငါဆက်ပြီးလုပ်တယ်။

Wow, how many years has it…  how many years has it been now? 

သြော်... ဘယ်နှစ်နှစ်ရှိပြီလဲ... အခုဘယ်နှစ်နှစ်ရှိပြီလဲ။

It's funny. I was just looking at it. 

ရယ်စရာကောင်းတယ်။ ငါက အဲဒါကို ကြည့်နေတယ်။

I was looking at my first video  just to see what it was like. 

ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံး ဗီဒီယိုကို ကြည့်ရင်း ဘယ်လိုပုံစံလဲဆိုတာ သိနိုင်ပါတယ်။

It was 10 years ago. Goodness me.

Well done. Congratulations on your success. Almost 3 million for just for your channel.

What types of videos do you  enjoy making for EngVid? 

EngVid အတွက် ဘယ်လိုဗီဒီယိုအမျိုးအစားတွေကို သင်နှစ်သက်လဲ။

To be honest, I... I like  making the grammar videos. 

ရိုးရိုးသားသားပြောရရင် ငါ... သဒ္ဒါဗီဒီယိုတွေကို ကြိုက်တယ်။

I know a lot of teachers don't  like to teach the grammar. 

ဆရာတော်တော်များများက သဒ္ဒါသင်ပေးတာကို မကြိုက်ဘူးဆိုတာ သိပါတယ်။

I know the students don't  necessarily like to learn grammar  

ကျောင်းသားတွေက သဒ္ဒါကို သင်ယူရတာ မကြိုက်ဘူးဆိုတာ သိပါတယ်

but it's very important I like grammar I like But it's very important. 

၊ ဒါပေမယ့် အရမ်းအရေးကြီးတယ် သဒ္ဒါကို ကြိုက်တယ် ဒါပေမယ့် အရမ်းအရေးကြီးတယ်။

I like grammar. I like to see a student’s face when he or she… 

သဒ္ဒါကြိုက်တယ်။ ကျောင်းသူလေးတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့မျက်နှာကို သူမြင်ရတာကြိုက်တယ်...

Oh, I get it. You know that “Ah ha” moment. 

အိုး..နားလည်ပါတယ်။ "Ah ha" ခဏလေး သိလား။

Right. And so,  

မှန်တယ်။ သဒ္ဒါကို ကြိုက်တယ်

I… I like the grammar, so I like to teach that. But, I do all kinds of lessons. 

၊ အဲဒါကို သင်ပေးရတာ ကြိုက်တယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော် သင်ခန်းစာ မျိုးစုံ လုပ်တယ်။

I do general English. I do like phrasal verbs, vocabulary,  

ငါက ယေဘူယျ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို လုပ်တယ်။ ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ phrasal verbs၊ vocabulary၊

some pronunciation, writing, test  prep, a little bit of everything. 

အချို့သော အသံထွက်၊ အရေးအသား၊ test prep၊ အားလုံးနည်းနည်း ကြိုက်တယ် ။

I remember talking to my students when  I taught university here in Korea,  

ကိုရီးယားမှာ တက္ကသိုလ် သင်ပေးတုန်းက ကျောင်းသားတွေနဲ့ စကားပြောတာ မှတ်မိသေးတယ်၊

and I said to them, I bet your grammar in  English is better than my grammar in English. 

အင်္ဂလိပ်လို မင်းရဲ့သဒ္ဒါက အင်္ဂလိပ်သဒ္ဒါထက် ပိုကောင်းတယ်လို့ တွေးတယ်။

Yeah, yeah. Because that's a large focus. 

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်ဟုတ်ပါတယ်။ အာရုံစူးစိုက်မှု ကြီးမားသောကြောင့် ဖြစ်သည်။

That's where they learned the most, yeah. Uh, in in their younger years, right? 

အဲဒါက သူတို့ အများဆုံး သင်ယူခဲ့တာ ဟုတ်တယ်။ အိုး၊ သူတို့ ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းက ဟုတ်တယ်မလား?

Have you noticed that? You know,  

အဲဒါကို သတိထားမိလား။

after moving to Korea and living in Turkey and  Israel and teaching in Toronto and Vancouver… 

ကိုးရီးယားကိုပြောင်းလာပြီး တူရကီနဲ့ အစ္စရေးမှာနေထိုင်ပြီး တိုရွန်တိုနဲ့ ဗန်ကူးဗားမှာ စာသင်ရင်း... ကိုးရီးယား ကျောင်းသားတွေ

Have you noticed that that Korean  students maybe have some different skills?  

ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုအချို့ရှိနိုင်တာကို သတိပြုမိပါသလား။

Second language-wise or third language wise ….? Yeah, they focus. They focus  

ဒုတိယဘာသာစကားနဲ့ တတိယဘာသာစကား လိမ္မာလား....? ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူတို့က အာရုံစိုက်တယ်။ သူတို့သည်

very heavily on the grammar. And they do work on the vocabulary,  

သဒ္ဒါကို အလွန်အာရုံစိုက်ကြသည်။ ပြီးတော့ သူတို့ ဝေါဟာရနဲ့ အလုပ်လုပ်

but they don't necessarily go outside… like they…  they look at the technical aspects and they don't… 

ပေမယ့် အပြင်ကို မထွက်ကြဘူး... သူတို့လို... နည်းပညာပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ ရှုထောင့်က ကြည့်ပြီးတော့ မလုပ်ကြဘူး...

I don't think they do enough practice, which I  think is why it's a little difficult for them so… 

သူတို့ လုံလောက်တဲ့ အလေ့အကျင့် မလုပ်ဘူး လို့ ကျမ ထင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါက နည်းနည်းလေးပဲ တွေးတာပါ၊ သူတို့အတွက် ခက်တယ်…

To like integrate those grammar lessons  and to use that vocabulary, etc. 

အဲဒီသဒ္ဒါသင်ခန်းစာတွေကို ပေါင်းစပ်ပြီး အဲဒီဝေါဟာရကို သုံးရတာ၊ စတာတွေကို နှစ်သက်ပါတယ်။

But I find that this is a Asian issue,  like the way Asian education systems work. 

ဒါပေမယ့် အာရှပညာရေးစနစ်တွေ လုပ်ဆောင်ပုံလိုမျိုး အာရှပြဿနာတစ်ခုလို့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ်။

A lot of them focused very heavily on the  grammar and not enough about on the speaking  

တော်တော်များများက သဒ္ဒါကို အလွန်အာရုံစိုက်ကြပြီး စကားပြောခြင်း

and the writing and the conversation. But that being said, having a strong  

၊ အရေးအသားနှင့် စကားစမြည်ပြောဆိုခြင်းနှင့်ပတ်သက်၍ မလုံလောက်ပါ။ ဒါပေမယ့် အဲဒါက ခိုင်မာတဲ့သဒ္ဒါအခြေခံရှိခြင်းက

grammar foundation makes it a  whole lot easier, I think, to  

မင်းရဲ့နောက်ပိုင်းနှစ်တွေမှာ ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ဟောပြောသူဖြစ်လာဖို့

become a great speaker in your later years, right? Yeah, but again, if you're willing to actually  

အများကြီးလွယ်ကူစေတယ် ဟုတ်တယ်ဟုတ်။ ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် နောက်တဖန် သင်က

apply it, so that's the, that's the key, use it. That's the EngVid videos, but what about  

အဲဒါကို အမှန်တကယ် အသုံးချလိုတယ်ဆိုရင် အဲဒါက သော့ချက်ပဲ၊ အဲဒါကို သုံးပါ။ အဲဒါက EngVid ဗီဒီယိုတွေပဲ၊ ဒါပေမယ့်

your channel - Write to the Top? How, how did that come to be when you  

မင်းရဲ့ချန်နယ်ကကော - ထိပ်တန်းသို့ စာရေးပါ။

decided to… to make that, you decided  to focus it on writing specifically? 

အဲဒါကို ရေးဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တာနဲ့ အတိအကျ ရေးဖို့ အာရုံစိုက်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တာက ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်လာတာလဲ ။

Yeah, so where did the idea  for your own channel come from? 

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မင်းရဲ့ကိုယ်ပိုင်ချန်နယ်အတွက် စိတ်ကူးက ဘယ်ကလာတာလဲ။

Well, I again, I've taught in many  places and I've I especially started  

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ငါထပ်ပြီး နေရာတော်တော်များများမှာ သင်ကြားပြီးပြီ အထူးသဖြင့်

teaching a test prep like IELTS and TOEFL. And I… I looked at statistics, and I looked  

IELTS နဲ့ TOEFL လိုမျိုး စာမေးပွဲကြိုတင်ပြီး သင်ပေးခဲ့တယ်။ ငါ… စာရင်းဇယားတွေကို ကြည့်ပြီး

at my own students, and other people students, and  I realized that like very consistently, it doesn't  

ကိုယ့်ကျောင်းသားတွေ၊ တခြားလူတွေ ကျောင်းသားတွေကို ကြည့်လိုက်တော့ တစ်သမတ်တည်းလိုပဲ

matter what country you come from, everybody’s  worst scores are in the writing section. 

မင်းဘယ်နိုင်ငံက လာတယ်ဆိုတာ အရေးမကြီးပါဘူး၊ လူတိုင်းရဲ့ အဆိုးဆုံးရမှတ်တွေက စာရေးတဲ့အပိုင်းမှာ ရှိနေတာကို ငါနားလည်တယ်။

And a lot of teachers, as much as  they can, they try to avoid teaching  

ဆရာ၊ ဆရာမ တော်တော်များများက တတ်နိုင်သလောက်

the writing because it's a very hard skill. So a lot of teachers don't like to teach it. 

စာရေးတာကို ရှောင်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားကြတယ်။ ဒါကြောင့် ဆရာတော်တော်များများက သင်ပေးတာကို မကြိုက်ဘူး။

Some, even English teachers are  not the best writers, like native  

အချို့သော၊ အင်္ဂလိပ်ဆရာများပင်လျှင် မူရင်း

speakers are not are not great writers. And so I realized that I should focus

on that because I like it for one thing. The students need it for another thing. 

တစ်ချက်လောက် ကြိုက်လို့ အဲဒါကို အာရုံစိုက်သင့်တယ်လို့ သဘောပေါက်ခဲ့တယ် ။ ကျောင်းသားတွေက တခြားအရာတွေအတွက် လိုအပ်တယ်။

And if it helps them, especially with  tests and like getting a job and all that…

A lot of people don't realize that writing is  something you're going to do your whole life. 

စာရေးတာက မင်းတစ်သက်လုံး လုပ်ရမယ့်အရာလို့ လူတော်တော်များများ မသိကြဘူး။

You're going to write resumes. You're going to write cover letters,  

ကိုယ်ရေးမှတ်တမ်းတွေ ရေးတော့မယ်။ မျက်နှာဖုံးစာတွေရေးမယ်၊

you're going to write memos, you're going  to write all kinds of things in business,  

မှတ်စုတိုတွေရေးမယ်၊ စီးပွားရေးမှာရော၊

outside of business, even on social media. Your captions have to be understood, right? 

စီးပွားရေးအပြင်မှာရော ဆိုရှယ်မီဒီယာမှာတောင် ရေးစရာတွေ ရေးမယ်။ မင်းရဲ့စာတန်းတွေကို နားလည်ရမယ် ဟုတ်လား။

So it's all about writing. So that's why I decided to open this channel. 

ဒါတွေအားလုံးက စာရေးတာချည်းပဲ။ ဒါကြောင့် ဒီချန်နယ်ကို ဖွင့်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့တာပါ။

I think you're absolutely right. That even… even native English speakers are not  

မင်းပြောတာ လုံးဝမှန်တယ်ထင်တယ်။ ဒါတောင်… မူလတန်း ၊

necessarily good writers because it's something  that we learn perhaps in elementary, middle,  

အလယ်တန်း၊ အထက်တန်း၊ တက္ကသိုလ်မှာ သင်လေ့လာနေတဲ့ အရာတွေပေါ် မူတည်ပြီး

high school, maybe in university, depending  on what you study, but that that's kind of it. 

မူလတန်း၊ အလယ်တန်း၊ အထက်တန်းမှာ သင်ယူရတဲ့ အရာမို့လို့ မူရင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာစကားကိုတောင် ကောင်းကောင်းစာရေးဆရာတွေ မလိုအပ်ပါဘူး

That's… that's kind of when it stops, right? And if you're never really, if you're never

really taught specifically how to  be a good writer, then it's not

something that's going to come naturally, correct? No, it… it doesn't come naturally because it takes  

သဘာဝအတိုင်း ဖြစ်လာတော့မယ့် အရာမဟုတ်ဘူး မဟုတ်လား။ မဟုတ်ဘူး… အဲဒါက အာရုံအများကြီး

a lot of focus, which is again another reason I  think a lot of people tend to stay away from it. 

ယူတဲ့အတွက် သဘာဝအတိုင်း မလာပါဘူး ၊ ဒါကလည်း လူတော်တော်များများက အဲဒါနဲ့ ဝေးဝေးနေလေ့ရှိတယ်လို့ ငါထင်တာ နောက်တစ်ခုက နောက်တစ်ခုပါပဲ။

And also people take for granted  that they… they speak well. 

ပြီးတော့ လူတွေက သူတို့... သူတို့ ကောင်းကောင်းပြောတတ်တယ်လို့ ခံယူထားကြတယ်။

They can communicate well. So that's it's good enough  

ကောင်းစွာ ပြောဆိုဆက်ဆံနိုင်ကြသည်။ ဒီတော့ ရေးလိုက်တာနဲ့ လုံလောက်ပြီ

when it comes across, the message gets across in  the writing, but it's not always the case, so... 

၊ မက်ဆေ့ချ်မှာ ပေါ်လွင်နေပေမယ့် အမြဲတမ်းတော့ မဖြစ်ပါဘူး...

are some of the… the basic tips that you give  students to try to improve their writing skills? 

ကျောင်းသားတွေကို သူတို့ရဲ့ အရေးအသားစွမ်းရည်ကို တိုးတက်အောင်ကြိုးစားဖို့ သင်ပေးတဲ့ အခြေခံအကြံပြုချက်တွေထဲက တချို့က ဘာတွေလဲ ။

The key is, like anything else, practice. You have to get practice, but as much as  

အရေးကြီးတာက တခြားအရာတွေလိုပဲ လေ့ကျင့်ပါ။ အလေ့အကျင့်ရရန် လိုအပ်သော်လည်း အတတ်နိုင်ဆုံး

possible get feedback as well.? Because you can write all day,  

တုံ့ပြန်ချက်ကိုလည်း ရယူပါ။ သင်တစ်နေ့လုံးစာရေးနိုင်

but if nobody, excuse me, if nobody is pointing  out the mistakes you're making, you're just  

ပေမယ့် ဘယ်သူမှမရှိရင် ခွင့်လွှတ်ပါ၊ သင်လုပ်နေတဲ့အမှားတွေကို ဘယ်သူမှ ထောက်ပြမပြဘူးဆိုရင်တော့ သင်

going to keep making them right. So that's the hard part. 

အမှန်အတိုင်းဆက်လုပ်သွားမှာပါ။ ဒါ ခက်တဲ့အပိုင်း။

I used… I used to tell my students…  I used to make them keep a diary. 

ငါသုံးတယ်… ငါ့တပည့်တွေကို ပြောဖူးတယ်… သူတို့ကို ဒိုင်ယာရီရေးခိုင်းတယ်။

And I would tell them to write  about any topic they want every day. 

ပြီးတော့ သူတို့ နေ့တိုင်း လိုချင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းအရာ တစ်ခုခု ရေးဖို့ ငါပြောမယ်။

And I realized after I gave the assignment  teaching so many different classes at university  

ပြီးတော့ တက္ကသိုလ်မှာ မတူညီတဲ့ အတန်းများစွာကို သင်ကြားပို့ချပေးပြီးနောက်မှာ

that I had created a ton of extra work for myself. But I didn't mind. 

ကိုယ့်အတွက် အပိုအလုပ်တွေ အများကြီး ဖန်တီးပေးခဲ့တယ် ဆိုတာ သိလိုက်ရတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော် စိတ်မ၀င်စားခဲ့ပါဘူး။

I didn't…. I didn't want to bring that up,  but that's another reason a lot of teachers  

ငါမလုပ်ဘူး…. အဲဒါကို ကျွန်တော်မပြောချင်ပေမယ့် အဲဒါက ဆရာတော်တော်များများက

don’t teach writing. So very true, right? 

စာရေးတာကို မသင်ပေးဘူး။ အရမ်းမှန်တယ်ဟုတ်လား။

But I didn't mind because the  students – “Do I have to do this?” 

ဒါပေမယ့် ကျောင်းသားတွေက “ဒါကို ငါလုပ်ရမှာလား” ဆိုတော့ ငါစိတ်မ၀င်စားဘူး။

And I said, “Well, yeah, because this  is really going to help your speaking  

ပြီးတော့ ငါက "အင်း၊ မင်းက မင်းရဲ့ပါးစပ်ထဲက စကားလုံးတွေကို စာရွက်ပေါ်ချချလိုက်လို့

because you're just taking the words out of your  mouth and you're putting them down on paper.” 

မင်းပြောနေတဲ့စကားက တကယ်ကို အထောက်အကူဖြစ်မှာမို့လို့ ငါပြောတာ "

Yeah. And then once I would correct it,  

အင်း။ အဲဒါပြီးရင် ပြင်ပြီးတာနဲ့

then I'd say, “OK, now repeat this 10, 15,  20 times that paragraph that you just wrote.” 

“အိုကေ၊ အခု ရေးခဲ့တဲ့ စာပိုဒ်ကို 10၊ 15၊ 20 ထပ်လုပ်ပါ။”

So do you agree with me? There's a strong  connection between writing and… and conversation? 

ဒါနဲ့ မင်းငါ့ကို သဘောတူလား။ စာရေးခြင်းနှင့်... နှင့် စကားဝိုင်းကြားတွင် ခိုင်မာသော ဆက်စပ်မှု ရှိပါသလား။

So there's absolutely a connection, because  again, listening and reading are passive skills. 

ထို့ကြောင့်၊ နားထောင်ခြင်းနှင့် စာဖတ်ခြင်းသည် passive စွမ်းရည်ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် လုံးဝဆက်စပ်မှုရှိပါသည်။

You're taking in the language and you're  processing it and making it work inside your head.

it'll come out in your speaking as well. And you're speaking will be much better.

Because normally, otherwise speaking, you can  just go around in circles to get to a point. 

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ဆိုတော့ ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်ရင် ပြောရရင် သင်ဟာ အမှတ်တစ်ခုရောက်ဖို့ စက်ဝိုင်းပုံ လည်နေနိုင်လို့ပါ။

Writing will help you focus your speaking as well. Oh, that's an excellent point. 

စာရေးခြင်းက သင့်စကားပြောတာကို အာရုံစိုက်ဖို့ ကူညီပေးပါလိမ့်မယ်။ အိုး၊ အဲဒါ အရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့ အချက်ပဲ။

Yeah, because when you speak you can kind of say  the same thing 10 times over in a different way. 

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မင်းစကားပြောတဲ့အခါ မတူတဲ့ပုံစံနဲ့ 10 ကြိမ် ထပ်ပြောနိုင်တယ်။

But when you're writing, you can't do that. You have to start at… at point A and get  

ဒါပေမယ့် စာရေးတဲ့အခါမှာတော့ မလုပ်နိုင်ဘူး။ အမှတ် A မှာ စပြီး

to point B by the time you're done. And there's no, there's no in between. 

အမှတ် B ကို ရောက်အောင် လုပ်ရပါမယ်။ မရှိဘူး၊ ကြားထဲမှာ မရှိဘူး။

Yeah, yeah. As quickly as possible. 

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်ဟုတ်ပါတယ်။ တတ်နိုင်သလောက်မြန်မြန်။

It's a great point, I didn't think about that. Well speaking of writing, you've written  

ဒါဟာ သိပ်ကောင်းတဲ့အချက်ပါ၊ ငါအဲဒါကို မစဉ်းစားမိဘူး။ စာရေးတာ ကောင်းတယ်ပြောရင် စာအုပ်တွေလည်း

some books as well. Tell us about those.

So again, both of these are the I've written  two books like one is a series of books.

It's all for the IELTS exam right now. It's to help people preparing for the IELTS exam.

The first one is called The Right Idea. Vocabulary and ideas and examples. 

ပထမတစ်ခုကို The Right Idea လို့ခေါ်တယ်။ ဝေါဟာရနှင့် အယူအဆများနှင့် ဥပမာများ။

Because again, if you if we're thinking  about Korean students, for example,  

ဥပမာ- ကိုးရီးယားကျောင်းသားတွေအကြောင်းတွေးရင်၊

one of the hardest things I've found that they…  one of the most difficult aspects of the exam,  

စာမေးပွဲရဲ့အခက်ခဲဆုံးထဲကတစ်ခုက

is coming up with ideas quickly, right? They're focusing too much on their vocabulary,  

အကြံဉာဏ်တွေ မြန်မြန်ဆန်ဆန်ရနေတာပဲမဟုတ်လား? သူတို့က သဒ္ဒါကို အလွန်အကျွံအာရုံစိုက်ပြီး

focusing too much on the grammar. And then they panic because  

ဝေါဟာရအသုံးအနှုန်းကို အရမ်းအာရုံစိုက်နေကြတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ သူတို့မှာ

they don't have any clear ideas. And this cost them a lot of points. 

ပြတ်သားတဲ့ အကြံဥာဏ်တွေ မရှိဘူးဆိုတော့ ထိတ်လန့်သွားတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ ဒါက သူတို့ကို အမှတ်အများကြီးပေးတယ်။

So I always tell them think  of ideas before the exam. 

ဒါကြောင့် စာမေးပွဲမဖြေခင် အတွေးအမြင်တွေကို အမြဲပြောပြတယ်။

So you mean on the IELTS? On the IELTS test? 

ဒါဆို IELTS ကို ဆိုလိုတာလား။ IELTS စာမေးပွဲမှာလား။

The essays, yes. They have to create something out of nowhere. 

စာစီစာကုံးတွေ ဟုတ်တယ်။ သူတို့သည် မည်သည့်နေရာမှ တစ်စုံတစ်ရာကို ဖန်တီးရမည်နည်း။

They get a prompt. They get a question  

သူတို့က အချက်ပေးတယ်။ သူတို့သည် မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုရပြီးနောက်

and then they have to write like a 250  words minimum essay to support their idea. 

၎င်းတို့၏စိတ်ကူးကို ပံ့ပိုးရန်အတွက် စာလုံးရေ 250 အနည်းဆုံးစာစီစာကုံးကဲ့သို့ ရေးသားရမည်ဖြစ်သည်။

OK. But they need to give reasons and

support like examples but they don't know what  to say in like a very timed situation and they

panic and then everything falls apart. If you have ideas before the test,  

ထိတ်လန့်သွားပြီး အရာအားလုံး ပြိုကျသွားတယ်။ စာမေးပွဲမစခင်မှာ အကြံဥာဏ်တွေ ရှိရင်

you're much more prepared for  any question that comes up. 

ပေါ်လာတဲ့မေးခွန်းအတွက် သင်ပိုပြီး အဆင်သင့်ဖြစ်နေပါပြီ။

So, for example, can you put  that in a context for me? 

ဒီတော့ ဥပမာ၊ အဲဒါကို ငါ့အတွက် ဆက်စပ်လို့ ထားနိုင်မလား။

Sure, so you're at, you're saying  like, OK, a very common question. 

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ ဒီတော့ သင်ရောက်နေပြီ၊ သင်ပြောနေတာ၊ ဟုတ်ပြီ၊ အလွန်အသုံးများတဲ့ မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုပါ။

Is it better to live in the  countryside or in the city? 

ကျေးလက်မှာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် မြို့ထဲမှာနေရတာ ပိုကောင်းပါတယ်။

So, you have to choose one, like  you have to have your introduction. 

ဒါကြောင့် မင်းရဲ့မိတ်ဆက်စကားလိုပါပဲ၊ မင်းကို ရွေးချယ်ရမှာ။

“I believe it's more important…  It's better to live in the city…” 

“ဒါက ပိုအရေးကြီးတယ်လို့ ငါယုံကြည်တယ်… မြို့ထဲမှာနေရတာ ပိုကောင်းတယ်…”

And then you have to give reasons. You have to have two body paragraphs  

ပြီးတော့ မင်းအကြောင်းပြချက်ပေးရမယ်။ အကြံပြုချက် နှစ်ခုရှိရန် လိုအပ်သည်

suggestion… suggesting why the  city is better than the country. 

... မြို့သည် နိုင်ငံထက် ဘာကြောင့် ပိုကောင်းသလဲ ဆိုတာကို အကြံပြုလိုပါသည်။

So, you have to give examples  like better transportation,  

ဒါကြောင့် ပိုမိုကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ လမ်းပန်းဆက်သွယ်ရေး၊

better infrastructure, better job opportunities. Then you have to give a bit of a contrast. 

ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ အခြေခံအဆောက်အအုံတွေ၊ အလုပ်အကိုင်အခွင့်အလမ်းတွေ ဥပမာတွေကို ပေးရပါမယ် ။ ပြီးရင် ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက် နည်းနည်း ပေးရမယ်။

So, in the country you get more  privacy, more leisure time. 

ဒီတော့ တိုင်းပြည်မှာ အေးအေးဆေးဆေး၊ အားလပ်ချိန်တွေ ပိုရလာမယ်။

But you don't make as much money and the cost  of living is a little harder, dot, dot, dot. 

ဒါပေမယ့် ပိုက်ဆံများများစားစားမရှာတတ်တော့ လူနေမှုစရိတ်က နည်းနည်းခက်တယ်၊ အစက်၊ အစက်၊ အစက်။

Very basic essay there, but they… That's a that's a great tip, though. 

အဲဒီမှာ အလွန်အခြေခံကျတဲ့ စာစီစာကုံး၊ ဒါပေမယ့် သူတို့… အဲဒါက အရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့ အကြံပြုချက်တစ်ခုပါပဲ။

I mean, if you're just talking about  a basic structure for.. for writing,  

ဆိုလိုတာက.. စာရေးဖို့အတွက် အခြေခံတည်ဆောက်ပုံအကြောင်းပြောနေတာ

that's a really excellent tip is that, you know,  list one or two or three or four ideas to support  

က တကယ်ကောင်းတဲ့ အကြံပြုချက်တစ်ခုပါပဲ၊ မင်း

what you're saying, but then say, “But,  also, on the other side,” 1, 2, 3 maybe  

ပြောနေတာတွေကို ထောက်ပံဖို့ အကြံဥာဏ်တစ်ခု ဒါမှမဟုတ် နှစ်ခု ဒါမှမဟုတ် သုံးခု ဒါမှမဟုတ် လေးခုကို စာရင်းပြုစုပြီး ပြောပါ၊ "ဒါပေမယ့်၊ အခြားတစ်ဖက်မှာလည်း" 1၊ 2၊ 3 ဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်နိုင်

and then come back and say, “But, ultimately…” That's it. 

ပြီးတော့ ပြန်လာပြီးတော့ "ဒါပေမယ့် နောက်ဆုံးမှာ...

The most important don't forget  to come back to your side. 

အရေးကြီးဆုံးက ကိုယ့်အနားကို ပြန်လာဖို့ မမေ့ပါနဲ့။

Yeah, yeah, that's... That don't forget that last paragraph. 

အင်း ဟုတ်တယ်... အဲဒါ နောက်ဆုံးစာပိုဒ်ကို မမေ့ပါနဲ့။

It's amazing how many people forget to do that. Oh, is that right?

Oh, that’s interesting. And they lose a lot of points because of that. 

အိုး၊ အဲဒါ စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာပဲ။ ပြီးတော့ သူတို့ အမှတ်တွေ အများကြီး ဆုံးရှုံးသွားတယ်။

Well, I guess I… I guess I kind of get that  because you're so caught up in the moment. 

အင်း… ငါထင်တာပဲ… မင်းအခိုက်အတန့်မှာ အရမ်းဖမ်းစားထားလို့ ငါဒီလိုနားလည်မယ်ထင်တယ်။

Exactly. I suppose. 

အတိအကျ။ ကျွန်တော် ... ထင်ပါသည်။

So I guess another tip for… for writing is… is  go back and check, read what you've written,  

ဒီတော့...ရေးဘို့အတွက် နောက်ထပ်အကြံပြုချက်တစ်ခုကတော့... အချိန်ရရင် ရေးထားတာကို ပြန်ပြီးစစ်ဆေးပါ၊ ဖတ်ပါ။

if you have the time. Always go back to your  

သင့်စာတမ်းကို အမြဲပြန်သွားပြီး

thesis and make sure you're  supporting that thesis. 

ထိုစာတမ်းကို သင်ထောက်ခံကြောင်း သေချာပါစေ။

My… my father was a teacher for 34 years. He was a high school vice principal and he  

ကျွန်တော့်အဖေက ၃၄ နှစ်ကြာ ကျောင်းဆရာမလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။ သူသည် အထက်တန်းကျောင်း၏ ဒုကျောင်းအုပ်တစ်ဦးဖြစ်ပြီး သူသည်

taught English, and he was frustrated  at his students not reading, um,  

အင်္ဂလိပ်စာကို သင်ကြားခဲ့ကာ ကျောင်းသားများကို စာမဖတ်သည့်အတွက် စိတ်ပျက်မိသည်၊ အမ်၊

the things that he was asking them to read. So when he gave a test, he said, “Read all these  

သူတို့ဖတ်ခိုင်းသည့်အရာများကို ဖတ်ခိုင်းသည်။ ဒါကြောင့် စာမေးပွဲဖြေတဲ့အခါ “ဒီ

questions before you answer any of them.” That was at the top of the page. 

မေးခွန်းတွေ အားလုံးကို မဖြေခင် ဒီမေးခွန်းတွေကို ဖတ်ပါ” လို့ ပြောပါတယ်။ အဲဒါက စာမျက်နှာရဲ့ထိပ်မှာ ရှိတယ်။

And the very last thing on page two of the test  was, “Don't answer any of these questions.” 

စာမေးပွဲ၏ စာမျက်နှာ ၂ တွင် နောက်ဆုံးအချက်မှာ “ဤမေးခွန်းများကို မဖြေပါနှင့်။”

And he said that. None of the student, not  one student handed it back an empty paper. 

ဟုဆိုသည်။ ကျောင်းသားတစ်ယောက်မှ၊ ကျောင်းသားတစ်ယောက်မှ စာရွက်အလွတ်ကို ပြန်မပေးခဲ့ဘူး။

They all wrote… wrote the answers as they came. That's a mean, but effective. 

အားလုံးက ရေးတယ်... အဖြေတွေ ရေးတယ်။ အဲဒါက ဆိုလိုတာ၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ထိရောက်တယ်။

So, I just recently, like a couple of months  ago, I published another again IELTS book. 

ဒါကြောင့် မကြာသေးခင်ကပဲ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ လအနည်းငယ်က IELTS စာအုပ်ကို ထပ်မံထုတ်ဝေခဲ့ပါတယ်။

I have about 40 samples of summaries and  essays - fully edited, with, some with  

ကျွန်ုပ်တွင် အကျဉ်းချုပ်နှင့် စာစီစာကုံးနမူနာ 40 ခန့်ရှိသည် - အပြည့်အစုံတည်းဖြတ်ထားပြီး အချို့မှာ

notes on where people lost points and  what they could do better next time. 

လူများ အမှတ်ဆုံးရှုံးသွားသည့်နေရာနှင့် နောက်တစ်ကြိမ် ပိုကောင်းအောင် မည်သို့လုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်သည်ကို မှတ်သားထားသည်။

And now I'm working on a  prepositions / collocations book. 

ယခု ကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဝိဘတ်များ / အစုအဝေးများ စာအုပ်တွင် အလုပ်လုပ်နေပါသည်။

Oh, that's a great… that's a great book. Where you have examples of essays and then

the mistakes that were made. Yeah, so.

So it's a real practical exercise for students. I'm also an editor.

So my edits are very… very detailed. But it's good for them to learn from so…

How how's your experience  been in… in Busan so far?

It's… it's… it's interesting  for the foreign community. 

နိုင်ငံခြားအသိုင်းအ၀ိုင်းအတွက် စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာပါပဲ။

If they… if they live in Busan, they tend to  live in Busan for their duration in Korea. 

အကယ်၍ သူတို့သည် ဘူဆန်တွင်နေထိုင်ပါက၊ ၎င်းတို့သည် ကိုရီးယားတွင် သက်တမ်းကြာအောင် ဘူဆန်တွင် နေထိုင်လေ့ရှိသည်။

For the Seoul expats, they tend to stay  in Seoul for the duration of their times.

But everyone I've talked to who lives in  Busan say that they absolutely love it there.

I mean, I lived in Tokyo, so I think I'm, I  think I'm done with the Big city experience.

I don't think I want to live in Seoul. Plus again, when I feel like it, I go

down to the beach, hang out, go paddle boarding,  whatever, then come home and work on the computer.

I left 5 minutes from the beach. Perfect.

Uhm, let's talk about the TEDx talk or  that that you that you did recently. 

အိုး၊ TEDx ဟောပြောပွဲ ဒါမှမဟုတ် မကြာသေးခင်က လုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ မင်းအကြောင်း ပြောကြည့်ရအောင်။

I watched it. I think you did a great job. 

ချောင်းကြည့်တယ်။ မင်းအလုပ်ကောင်းကောင်းလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်ထင်တယ်။

I think it was a very interesting topic.

You talked about the importance of writing as  we've already talked about a little bit today. 

ဒီနေ့ နည်းနည်းပြောပြီးပြီမို့ စာရေးခြင်းရဲ့ အရေးပါပုံကို မင်းပြောဖူးတယ်။

How did the… did the TEDx talk happen? They contacted you, obviously. 

TEDx ဟောပြောချက် ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်သွားတာလဲ။ သူတို့ မင်းကို ဆက်သွယ်ခဲ့တယ်၊ သိသာတယ်။

Yeah, actually I'm friends with the organizer. And she's been wanting me to come for years,  

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ငါက စီစဉ်သူနဲ့ သူငယ်ချင်းပဲ။ ပြီးတော့ သူက ကျွန်မကို နှစ်အတော်ကြာအောင် လာချင်ပေမယ့

but there was never a theme that I would fit into. But this year, this year's theme was Empowered,  

် ကျွန်မနဲ့ လိုက်ဖက်မယ့် ခေါင်းစဉ်မျိုး တစ်ခါမှ မရှိခဲ့ဘူး။ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒီနှစ်မှာတော့ ဒီနှစ်ရဲ့ theme က Empowered ဖြစ်ပြီး

and being able to write is  a very empowering thing, so 

စာရေးရတာက အရမ်းအားရစရာကောင်းတာမို့

it actually fits nicely this year. Well, I watched it, but I'll let you share. 

ဒီနှစ်က တကယ်ကို လိုက်ဖက်ပါတယ်။ ကောင်းပြီ၊ ငါကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် မင်းကို မျှဝေပေးမယ်။

What… what were some of the things that  you talked about in your in your speech? 

ဘာလဲ... မင်းရဲ့မိန့်ခွန်းထဲမှာ မင်းပြောခဲ့တဲ့အကြောင်းအရာတွေက ဘာတွေလဲ။

So, one thing I… some of these  we already mentioned, like the  

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်ပြောဖူးတဲ့ အချက်တွေထဲက တချို့က

difference between writing and speaking. But how writing you have, it's just you and the  

စာရေးတာနဲ့ စကားပြောကြားက ကွာခြားချက်လိုပါပဲ။ ဒါပေမယ့် မင်းစာရေးပုံက မင်းနဲ့ စာသားတွေပဲ

text, and then it's just the reader and the text. Whereas speaking, you have your hands,  

၊ ပြီးတော့ အဲဒါက စာဖတ်သူနဲ့ စာသားပဲလေ။ ပြောရရင် မင်းလက်ထဲမှာ

you have your face. You can go back and forth. 

မင်းမျက်နှာရှိတယ်။ ကျီးလန့်စာစား လုပ်လို့ရတယ်။

And it's like, express different ideas  until you reach an understanding. 

နားလည်မှုတစ်ခုရလာသည်အထိ မတူညီသော အယူအဆများကို ဖော်ပြပါ။

But writing is only the text, and  if the reader can't understand you,  

ဒါပေမယ့် စာရေးတာက စာသားတွေပဲ၊ စာဖတ်သူက မင်းကို နားမလည်နိုင်ဘူး၊

can't understand what you're saying, you didn't say anything. 

မင်းပြောတာကို နားမလည်ရင် မင်းဘာမှ မပြောဘူး။

So it's very important to know how  to write well and I gave some tips. 

ဒါကြောင့် ကောင်းကောင်းရေးတတ်ဖို့က အရမ်းအရေးကြီးပြီး အကြံဥာဏ်အချို့ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

For example, the 3C's. Be clear, be concise, be correct. 

ဥပမာ 3C ပေါ့။ ရှင်းအောင်၊ တိုတိုရှင်းရှင်း၊ မှန်ကန်ပါစေ။

Right? Make sure you're doing  

ဟုတ်တယ်ဟုတ်? သင်စာရေးနေချိန်တွင် ဤအရာအားလုံးကို

all these things when you're writing. Hold on, I gotta write that down. 

သင်လုပ်ကြောင်း သေချာပါစေ ။ ခဏနေ၊ ငါဒါကိုရေးရမယ်။

Three Cs. Use this for myself. 

Cs သုံးခု ဒါကို ကိုယ့်အတွက် သုံးပါ။

Yeah, every anything you write,  emails, essays, anything. 

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မင်းရေးသမျှ၊ အီးမေးလ်တွေ၊ စာစီစာကုံးတွေ၊ ဘာမဆို။

It's all about being clear. Writing less is actually better than writing more. 

အားလုံးရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်းဖြစ်ခြင်းအကြောင်းဖြစ်သည်။ လျှော့ရေးတာက ပိုရေးတာထက်စာရင် ပိုကောင်းပါတယ်။

A lot of people misunderstand that they  think more words is more impressive. 

စကားလုံးတွေက ပိုအထင်ကြီးစရာကောင်းတယ်လို့ လူတော်တော်များများက နားလည်မှုလွဲကြပါတယ်။

It's not. It's just more confusing. 

အဲဒါ .... မဟုတ်ဘူး။ ပိုရှုပ်သွားတယ်။

And just make sure you're writing correct things. Don't confuse your reader. 

ပြီးတော့ မှန်ကန်တဲ့အရာတွေကို သေချာရေးပါ။ သင့်စာဖတ်သူကို မရောထွေးပါနဲ့။

Make sure you know who your reader is so they  can get to your message and all that, yeah. 

သင့်စာဖတ်သူသည် မည်သူဖြစ်သည်ကို သင်သိပါရန် သေချာပါစေ။

Uhm, again, to use my dad as an example, he always  liked cars that had windows that you had to roll  

အဖေ့ကို သာဓကအနေနဲ့ သုံးရပြန်တော့လည်း ပါဝါသုံးမယ့်အစား လှိမ့်

up instead of power things. Old school. 

တင်ရမယ့် ပြတင်းပေါက်တွေပါတဲ့ ကားတွေကို အမြဲကြိုက်တယ် ။ ကျောင်းဟောင်း။

Old school stuff and I… I said, “Why  do you? Why do you prefer that?” 

ကျောင်းဟောင်းပစ္စည်းတွေနဲ့ ငါ… ငါက “မင်းဘာလို့လုပ်တာလဲ။ မင်းဘာလို့အဲဒါကိုကြိုက်တာလဲ။"

He said, “The more things you have in  a car, the more things can go wrong.” 

"မင်းကားထဲမှာ ပစ္စည်းတွေများလေလေ၊ မှားသွားလေလေ" လို့ပြောပါတယ်။

Absolutely. And I think, I think that's a good,  

မေးတာ။ ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်တယ်၊ အဲဒါက

uh, a good way to think about writing as well. Just because you're using more words, doesn't  

စာရေးဖို့ စဉ်းစားဖို့ ကောင်းတဲ့နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခုလို့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ်။ စကားလုံးတွေ ပိုသုံးနေတာကြောင့်

necessarily mean those words are effective. And I remember Doctor Terry Whalen,  

ဒီစကားလုံးတွေက ထိရောက်တယ်လို့ မဆိုလိုပါဘူး။ တက္ကသိုလ်က ပါမောက္ခတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်တဲ့ Doctor Terry Whalen ကို သတိရမိတယ်

one of my professors in university, he would make  us, after we finished an essay, he would say,  

၊ အက်ဆေးတစ်ခုပြီးတာနဲ့ သူက ငါတို့ကို ဖန်ဆင်းပေးလိမ့်မယ်၊

“Go back and take out every single word that is  not absolutely necessary, to the point that you're  

“မင်း လုံးဝ မလိုအပ်တဲ့ စကားလုံးတိုင်းကို ပြန်သွားပြီး နှုတ်ယူလိုက်ပါ။ ပြန်

taking and just strip them all away and then you  get a very clear, very concise piece of writing.” 

ယူပြီး အားလုံးကို ဖယ်ထုတ်လိုက်ရုံနဲ့ အလွန်ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်း တိုတိုတုတ်တုတ် ရေးထားတဲ့ စာတစ်ပုဒ်ကို သင်ရရှိမှာပါ။”

That's what you're talking about, yeah? I… I… I tell my students like when I  

အဲဒါ မင်းပြောနေတာ ဟုတ်လား။ ငါ... ငါ... ငါ

teach writing classes, I tell them when you're  whenever you have your first draft, first step,  

စာရေးတဲ့ အတန်းတွေ သင်ပေးတုန်းကလိုပဲ ငါ့ကျောင်းသားတွေကို ငါပြောပြတယ်၊ မင်းရဲ့ ပထမမူကြမ်းရတဲ့အခါတိုင်း၊ ပထမအဆင့်

cut out 5% of the word count. If you're good enough, make it 10%,  

စကားလုံးအရေအတွက်ရဲ့ 5% ကိုဖြတ်လိုက်ပါ။ သင်ကောင်းလျှင် 10% နှင့်

but start with 5%. Right away. 

5% ဖြင့်စတင်ပါ။ ချက်ချင်း။

Just get rid of words you don't need  and then see how much clearer and more  

သင်မလိုအပ်သော စကားလုံးများကို ဖယ်ရှားပြီး

effective your writing is already  before you do any other changes. 

အခြားပြောင်းလဲမှုများ မပြုလုပ်မီ သင့်အရေးအသားသည် ပိုမိုရှင်းလင်းပြီး ပိုမိုထိရောက်မှုရှိနေပြီဖြစ်သည်ကို ကြည့်ရှုပါ။

Your students must hate that, though, because  you're you probably give them a word count,  

မင်းရဲ့ကျောင်းသားတွေက အဲဒါကို မုန်းသင့်ပေမယ့် မင်းဟာ သူတို့ကို စကားလုံးရေတွက်ဖို့ ဖြစ်နိုင်လို့

right? Like, OK, I need a I need a 800-word  essay or something, and everybody is trying to. 

ပဲလား။ အိုကေ၊ စာလုံး 800 ပါတဲ့ စာစီစာကုံး ဒါမှမဟုတ် တစ်ခုခုလိုတယ်၊ လူတိုင်းက ကြိုးစားနေကြတယ်။

that's why we're here at the end of the day  - to help them get to where they need to get.

And again, it's that “ah ha” moment  where something clicks and they can  

နောက်တဖန်၊ အဲဒါက တစ်ခုခုကလစ်နှိပ်လိုက်တာနဲ့ သူတို့

go to that next step and get even better and… When I hear students who like got into university  

နောက်ထပ်အဆင့်ကို ရောက်သွားနိုင်ပြီး ပိုကောင်းလာနိုင်တယ်… တက္ကသိုလ်တက်တာ

or graduated university and they say, “Thanks.  You helped me a lot,” I… but that's huge for me. 

ဒါမှမဟုတ် တက္ကသိုလ်ဘွဲ့ရပြီးသွားတဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေကို ငါကြားလိုက်တာနဲ့ “ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။ မင်းငါ့ကိုအများကြီးကူညီခဲ့တယ်" ငါ ... ဒါပေမယ့်ဒါကငါ့အတွက်ကြီးမားတယ်။

Yeah, that… It's really rewarding,  

ဟုတ်တယ်… အဲဒါက တကယ်ကို အကျိုးရှိမယ်

I guess, right. Yeah, very much. 

ထင်တာပဲ၊ မှန်တယ်။ ဟုတ်တယ် အရမ်းကြိုက်တယ်။

The point that you made about being  clear and concise and… and comparing  

ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်း ကျစ်ကျစ်လျစ်လျစ်နဲ့ ပြောထားတဲ့ အချက်က…

that to speaking is something that  I never really thought about before. 

အဲဒါကို ပြောတာနဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်တာက အရင်က တစ်ခါမှ မတွေးဖူးတဲ့ ကိစ္စပါ။

When we talk, you… as you mentioned, we have  our facial expressions, we have our hands. 

ငါတို့စကားပြောတဲ့အခါ မင်း... မင်းပြောသလို ငါတို့မျက်နှာအမူအရာတွေ ငါတို့လက်တွေရှိတယ်။

As I'm using my hands now, there are all  of these, um, hidden messages, if you will,

what the… the main point of what I'm trying  to say, but in writing you don't have any of  

် စာရေးတဲ့အခါ မင်းမှာ အဲဒီ အပိုအကူအညီတစ်ခုမှ မရှိဘူး

that extra help, and that's why you say it's  so important to be clear and concise, right?

Absolutely 'cause it's not even…  it's not even your physical self.

Like how you say a particular word. Where you put the stress in a sentence  

စကားလုံးတခုခုကို ဘယ်လိုပြောရမလဲ ကြိုက်တယ်။ ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းတွင် သင်စိတ်ဖိစီးမှုကို ထည့်ထားရာ

changes the meaning of the sentence, and  your listener generally will get that. 

ဝါကျ၏အဓိပ္ပာယ်ကို ပြောင်းလဲစေပြီး သင့်နားထောင်သူသည် ယေဘုယျအားဖြင့် ၎င်းကို ရရှိမည်ဖြစ်သည်။

But you don't have these points. Like, yeah, there are tricks to writing  

ဒါပေမယ့် မင်းမှာ ဒီအချက်တွေ မရှိဘူး။ ဟုတ်တယ်၊

to convey anger or to convey humor, but it's a  little bit more nuanced, whereas in speaking,  

ဒေါသကို ဖော်ညွှန်းဖို့ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ဟာသပြောဖို့ စာရေးဖို့ လှည့်ကွက်တွေရှိတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် နည်းနည်းပိုပျော့ပျောင်းတယ်၊ စကားပြောရင်

it's very obvious. If you're angry,  

အရမ်းသိသာတယ်။ စိတ်ဆိုးရင်

you're going to say something angrily. If you're happy, you'll say it happily  

ဒေါသတကြီးပြောမယ်။ မင်းပျော်ရင် မင်းပျော်ပျော်ကြီးပြောမယ်

sort of thing, so… It's very different.

I am the king of misunderstanding text message,  text message tones and that's exactly, but that's  

ငါဟာ စာသားမက်ဆေ့ချ်၊ စာတိုသံတွေကို နားလည်မှုလွဲနေတဲ့ဘုရင်ဖြစ်ပြီး အဲဒါက အတိအကျပဲ၊ ဒါပေမယ့်

exactly what you're talking about, right? But text is so short, that text messages,  

မင်းပြောနေတာက အတိအကျပဲ မဟုတ်လား။ ဒါပေမယ့် စာသားက အရမ်းတိုတယ်၊ အဲဒီ စာသားတွေက

so short there's no room for tone. Right, really interesting. 

တိုတိုလေးဆိုတော့ အသံနေအသံထားအတွက် နေရာမရှိဘူး။ မှန်တယ်၊ တကယ်စိတ်ဝင်စားဖို့ကောင်းတယ်။

I said I was… I said to my friend, I'm the  most relaxed person in Spain right now.

But until then, like even a few days up that  moment, it really, really nervous and sweaty and

I didn't even know how the words came out. But I was prepared.

That's the key. Uhm, I almost said  

အဲဒါ အဓိကပဲ။ အိုး၊

no when they asked me to do it because it's not  something that was outside of my comfort zone. 

အဲဒါက ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ comfort zone ရဲ့အပြင်မှာ မဟုတ်လို့ လုပ်ခိုင်းတဲ့အခါ မဟုတ်ဘူးလို့ ပြောတယ် ။

And I also didn't know that  you don't have cue cards. 

ပြီးတော့ မင်းမှာ ကျူတိုကတ်တွေ မရှိဘူးဆိုတာ ငါလည်း မသိခဲ့ဘူး။

You're not allowed to have cue cards. Exactly as member. 

သင့်တွင် ကျူတိုကတ်များ ရှိရန် ခွင့်မပြုပါ။ အဖွဲ့ဝင်အဖြစ်အတိအကျ။

You don't have a podium. You don't have a microphone to hold onto. 

သင့်တွင် စင်မြင့်တစ်ခု မရှိပါ။ ကိုင်ရန် မိုက်ခရိုဖုန်း မရှိပါ။

I thought, oh, at least if I can  have that as a security blanket. 

အိုး၊ အနည်းဆုံးတော့ အဲဒါကို လုံခြုံရေး စောင်တစ်ထည်အနေနဲ့ ရနိုင်မလားလို့ တွေးမိတယ်။

But they said no, no, no, you've just got the  mic on your cheek and the rest is up to you.

I think writing at its base stays  similar, but there are changes.

Like if you read newspapers today and you read  them before, everything is much tighter now.

I think also social media like  captions and tweeting and all that.

People got used to reading short. And young people today, their attention

span is much shorter than it used to be. So people have to be more direct, more concise

with their whatever they're writing. And I think even novels

You don't see as much, you know, expansion like  if you read Gabriel Garcia, Marquez, whatever.

That guy goes on and on and on with adjectives  but I'm not sure how popular he would be with

a younger generation now. Do you know what I mean?

The story is amazing. The writing is amazing.

But I don't know if they have the  attention span for that these days, so…

Yeah, I mean, you make a good point. Because even when you watch YouTube videos,  

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မင်းက အမှတ်ကောင်းတစ်ခု လုပ်တယ်။ ဥပမာအားဖြင့် YouTube ဗီဒီယိုများကို ကြည့်သည့်အခါတွင်ပင်

for example. Yeah.

Some, some, some of them have to be extremely  short because people just don't have the

attention span, nor the wants, nor the desire. I guess what it is these days in our culture,

Use AI to guess what I want. Yeah, yeah, exactly.

in our language and in our writing, there  is a line though where you still want to be  

သရုပ်ဖော် ချင်သေးတာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် မင်းရဲ့အတွင်းခန်းထဲမှာ ထက်မြက်မြက်မြက်ရှိချင်နေသေးတဲ့

perhaps descriptive or you still want  to be eloquent, eloquent in your in your

in your writing, so where… where do students, how are… how are the students supposed to know

where that line is of of  kind of going too far in the  

ဒီစာကြောင်းက ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်ဘက်ကို ဝေးလွန်းသွားပြီး

opposite direction and overcompensating  and not being descriptive enough. 

လျော်ကြေးပေးပြီး သရုပ်ဖော်ဖို့ မလုံလောက်ဘူးဆိုတာကို ကျောင်းသားတွေက ဘယ်လို သိသင့်လဲ။

Yeah, I think first of all, it starts with who's  your target audience and what's the context? 

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ပထမဆုံးလို့ထင်တယ်၊ အဲဒါက မင်းရဲ့ပစ်မှတ်ပရိသတ်က ဘယ်သူလဲ၊ ဆက်စပ်မှုဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။

Ok. If you’re in  

business and you're writing an e-mail, the  shorter, the absolute shortest, the better. 

အိုကေတယ်နော်။ သင်က

စီးပွားရေးလုပ်နေပြီး အီးမေးလ်တစ်စောင်ရေးနေတယ်ဆိုရင် ပိုတိုလေ၊ လုံးဝအတိုဆုံး၊ ပိုကောင်းလေပါပဲ။

'cause people don't have time that like, if  you're lucky, if they even open your e-mail. 

လူတွေမှာ အချိန်မရှိဘူးဆိုတော့ မင်းကံကောင်းရင် မင်းရဲ့ e-mail ကိုတောင် ဖွင့်လိုက်မိလို့။

If you're writing an essay… again if you have to  fill up 4 pages and but you can actually answer  

စာစီစာကုံးတစ်ခုရေးနေတယ်ဆိုရင်... နောက်တစ်ကြိမ် စာမျက်နှာ ၄ ​​ရွက်ထပ်ဖြည့်ရမယ်ဆိုရင်

Exactly, like I always say, one of the  first things I say, “Avoid jargon.”

If you're in a specific field and… your  make sure you know who you're writing to. 

အကယ်၍ သင်သည် သီးခြားနယ်ပယ်တစ်ခုတွင်ရှိပြီး... သင်မည်သူထံ စာရေးမည်ကို သင်သိကြောင်း သေချာပါစေ။

So sometimes I help people apply  for, let's say, medical residencies. 

ဒါကြောင့် တစ်ခါတရံမှာ လူတွေကို ဆေးဘက်ဆိုင်ရာ နေထိုင်ခွင့်လျှောက်ထားဖို့ ကူညီပေးပါတယ်။

They want to go do a medical  residency in the States. 

သူတို့သည် ပြည်နယ်တွင် ဆေးကုသရန် သွားချင်ကြသည်။

And they need help with their personal  statement, statements of purpose, etc. 

သူတို့ရဲ့ ကိုယ်ရေးကိုယ်တာထုတ်ပြန်ချက်၊ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ဖော်ပြချက် စတာတွေအတွက် အကူအညီလိုပါတယ်။

And some of them get very detailed into the  things that they actually do, like the medical  

ပြီးတော့ တချို့က ဆေးဘက်ဆိုင်ရာ လုပ်ငန်းစဉ်တွေ လိုမျိုး သူတို့တကယ်လုပ်တဲ့အရာတွေကို အသေးစိတ်အချက်အလက်တွေရကြတယ်

procedures. Right. 

။ မှန်တယ်။

And I tell them just understand that  yes, medical people will be reading it,  

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ ဆေးဘက်ဆိုင်ရာလူတွေက အဲဒါကို ဖတ်နေလိမ့်မယ်၊

but also some non-medical people. Don't lose them, right? 

ဆေးမဟုတ်တဲ့လူတချို့ကိုလည်း နားလည်အောင် ငါပြောမယ် ။ သူတို့ကို မဆုံးရှုံးစေနဲ့ မဟုတ်လား။

Be very general 'cause the medical people  will understand you, but you'll also keep the  

ဆေးဘက်ဆိုင်ရာက လူတွေက မင်းကို နားလည်ပေးမှာမို့လို့ သိပ်ကို ယေဘူယျဖြစ်နေပေမယ့်

non-medical people interested, right? It's the same idea. 

ဆေးမဟုတ်တဲ့လူတွေကိုလည်း စိတ်ဝင်တစားရှိနေမှာဘဲ။ တူညီတဲ့ အယူအဆပါ။

Yep, that's a great point. And… and you said it extremely well,  

ဟုတ်တယ်၊ အဲဒါ အရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့ အချက်ပဲ။ ပြီးတော့... မင်းက သိပ်ကောင်းတာပဲ၊

you're going to lose them. And then it you start to use words that  

မင်း သူတို့ကို ဆုံးရှုံးရလိမ့်မယ်တဲ့။ ပြီးတော့ သူတို့မသိတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေ သုံးလာတယ်

they don't know, your audience is gone, right? Yeah, and they're and they're scanning too. 

၊ မင်းရဲ့ ပရိသတ် မရှိတော့ဘူးလား။ ဟုတ်တယ်၊ သူတို့လည်း စကင်န်ဖတ်နေတယ်။

If they scan it, I can't get this. That's it. 

သူတို့ စကင်ဖတ်ရင် ကျွန်တော် ဒါကို မရဘူး။ ဒါပဲ။

They have no problem putting you  in the rejection file right away. 

၎င်းတို့သည် သင့်အား ငြင်းပယ်ခြင်းဖိုင်တွင် ချက်ချင်းထည့်ထားရန် ပြဿနာမရှိပါ။

It reminds me of… I've interviewed a lot of  musicians over the years, and I always find  

အဲဒါကို သတိရမိပါတယ်... နှစ်တွေကြာလာတော့ ဂီတသမားတော်တော်များများကို အင်တာဗျူးခဲ့ပြီး၊

that with jazz musicians they use a lot of you  know, when they talk about like inspirations  

Jazz ဂီတသမားတွေနဲ့ တော်တော်များများက သူတို့

for their career, there's always a list of names  that I have no idea what they're talking about. 

အသက်မွေးဝမ်းကြောင်းအတွက် လှုံ့ဆော်မှုတွေလို ပြောကြတဲ့အခါ သူတို့သိတဲ့ jazz ဂီတသမားတွေကို အမြဲတွေ့နေရတယ်၊ သူတို့ဘာတွေပြောနေလဲ ငါမသိဘူး။

But those names always come out, right? Yeah, the references. Yeah. 

ဒါပေမယ့် အဲဒီနာမည်တွေ အမြဲထွက်လာတယ် မဟုတ်လား။ အကိုးအကား။ အင်း။

Yeah, exactly. Even if… like for students who are watching  

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ အတိအကျ။ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို လေ့လာဖို့ sitcoms တွေ လို ကြည့်နေတဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေအတွက်တောင်

like sitcoms to learn English, I know that a lot  of the jokes or a lot of the big points made,  

ရယ်စရာတွေ အများကြီး ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကြီးကြီးမားမားလုပ်ထားတဲ့ အချက်တွေအများကြီး၊

have to do with references, and it's so if you  don't understand what's going on, don't worry,  

ကိုးကားမှုတွေနဲ့ ဆက်စပ်နေတယ် ဆိုတာတော့ နားမလည်ရင် အဲဒါပါပဲ၊ အင်္ဂလိပ်အကြောင်းမဟုတ်သောကြောင့်

because it's not about English. Yeah, right. 

စိတ်မပူပါနှင့် ။ ဟုတ်တယ်၊ မှန်တယ်။

It's about the cultural references. If you don't know them, you don't know them, so… 

ယဉ်ကျေးမှုဆိုင်ရာ ကိုးကားချက်များအကြောင်းဖြစ်သည်။ မင်းသူတို့ကိုမသိရင် မင်းသူတို့ကိုမသိဘူး၊ ဒါ...

Yeah, that's true. That's an excellent point.
