the details of that biography will be more or less accurate.

That's the second lesson that I've learned.

I want to tell you about the last conversation that I had with Will.

It was the day that he was going to be executed,

And he was talking first about his dad, who he hardly knew, who had died,

e depois sobre a mãe, que ele conhecia, que ainda estava viva.

and then about his mom, who he did know, who was still alive.

E eu disse-lhe:

"Eu conheço a história.

And I said to him,

"Li os registos.

"I know the story.

"Sei que ela tentou matar-te.

I've read the records.

"Mas eu sempre quis saber

I know that she tried to kill you."

"se tu te lembras realmente disso.

I said, "But I've always wondered

whether you really actually remember that."

"Eu não me lembro de nada quando tinha cinco anos.

I said, "I don't remember anything from when I was five years old.

"Talvez só te lembres do que alguém te contou".

Maybe you just remember somebody telling you."

Ele olhou para mim, inclinou-se

e disse; "Professor,"

And he looked at me and he leaned forward,

— ele conhecia-me há 12 anos, ainda me chamava Professor.

and he said, "Professor," --

he'd known me for 12 years, he still called me Professor.

"Professor, eu não quero faltar-lhe ao respeito,

"mas quando a nossa mãe pega numa faca

He said, "Professor, I don't mean any disrespect by this,

"que parece ser maior que nós,

but when your mama picks up a butcher knife

"e persegue-nos pela casa a gritar que nos vai matar,

that looks bigger than you are,

and chases you through the house screaming she's going to kill you,

"e temos de nos trancar na casa de banho

"e encostarmo-nos na porta

and you have to lock yourself in the bathroom

"e berrar por ajuda até que a polícia chegue..."

and lean against the door

and holler for help until the police get there,"

ele olhou para mim e disse:

he looked at me and he said,

"that's something you don't forget."

I hope there's one thing you all won't forget:

and the time we break for lunch,

there are going to be four homicides in the United States.

Vamos dedicar enormes recursos sociais

We're going to devote enormous social resources

para punir as pessoas que cometem esses crimes,

e tem que ser porque temos que castigar as pessoas que fazem coisas más.

to punishing the people who commit those crimes,

and that's appropriate

Mas três desses crimes podiam ter sido evitados.

because we should punish people who do bad things.

But three of those crimes are preventable.
