Hello.

I'd like to introduce you to someone.

ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

This is Jomny.

ਇਹ ਹੈ ਜੌਮਨੀ,

That's "Jonny" but spelled accidentally with an "m,"

ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ 'ਜੌਨੀ' ਹੈ ਪਰ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਮ' ਜੁੜ ਗਿਆ।

ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ

in case you were wondering,

because we're not all perfect.

ਕਈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਕਮੀਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Jomny is an alien

ਜੌਮਨੀ ਇੱਕ ਏਲੀਅਨ ਹੈ

who has been sent to earth with a mission to study humans.

ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

Jomny is feeling lost and alone and far from home,

ਜੌਮਨੀ ਘਰੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਆਚਿਆ ਤੇ ਇੱਕਲਾ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

and I think we've all felt this way.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਭ ਕਦੇ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

Or, at least I have.

ਘੱਟੋ-ਘੱਟ ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

I wrote this story about this alien at a moment in my life

ਇਸ ਏਲੀਅਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਪਲ ਲਿਖੀ ਸੀ

when I was feeling particularly alien.

ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਇੱਕ ਏਲੀਅਨ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।

I had just moved to Cambridge and started my doctoral program at MIT,

ਮੈਂ ਕੈਮਬ੍ਰਿਜ ਆਇਆ ਹੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਐਮਆਈਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੀਐੱਚਡੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ

and I was feeling intimidated and isolated and very much like I didn't belong.

ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਡਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਅਲੱਗ ਜਿਹਾ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ।

But I had a lifeline of sorts.

ਪਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਹ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੀ।

See, I was writing jokes for years and years

ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਚੁਟਕਲੇ ਲਿਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ

and sharing them on social media,

ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ

and I found that I was turning to doing this more and more.

ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਉਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ।

Now, for many people, the internet can feel like a lonely place.

ਬਹੁਤ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ ਇੱਕ ਸੁੰਨੀ ਥਾਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

It can feel like this,

ਇੰਝ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ,

a big, endless, expansive void

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਖ਼ਲਾਅ ਹੋਵੇ

where you can constantly call out to it but no one's ever listening.

ਜਿੱਥੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਿਹਾ।

But I actually found a comfort in speaking out to the void.

ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਖ਼ਲਾਅ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲਣ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ।

I found, in sharing my feelings with the void,

ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਖ਼ਲਾਅ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਸਾਂਝੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ

eventually the void started to speak back.

ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਲਾਅ ਵੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ।

And it turns out that the void isn't this endless lonely expanse at all,

ਫਿਰ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਲਾਅ ਇੱਕ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਇਕੱਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,

but instead it's full of all sorts of other people,

ਸਗੋਂ ਇਹ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,

also staring out into it and also wanting to be heard.

ਜੋ ਇਸ ਵੱਲ ਦੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Now, there have been many bad things that have come from social media.

ਸੋਸ਼ਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਹੈ।

I'm not trying to dispute that at all.

ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਉਠਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸਿਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।

To be online at any given point is to feel so much sadness

ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੀ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਹੋਣ ਉੱਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ

and anger and violence.

ਤੇ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਤੇ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

It can feel like the end of the world.

ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

Yet, at the same time, I'm conflicted

ਪਰ ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਸ਼ਮਕਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਂ

because I can't deny the fact that so many of my closest friends

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਈ ਨਜਦੀਕੀ ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਉਹ ਹਨ,

are people that I had met originally online.

And I think that's partly because there's this confessional nature

ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

It can feel like you are writing in this personal, intimate diary

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰੋਂਗੇ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਡਾਇਰੀ ਲਿਖ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ

that's completely private,

ਜੋ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਨਿਜੀ ਹੈ,

yet at the same time you want everyone in the world to read it.

ਪਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ।

And I think part of that, the joy of that

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਹਿਸਾ ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ,

is that we get to experience things from perspectives from people

ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਜਰੀਏ ,ਜੋ ਸਾਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਹਨ,

who are completely different from ourselves,

ਦੇਖਣ ਦੇ ਤਜਰਬੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ

and sometimes that's a nice thing.

ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਕਦਾਈਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਵੀ ਹੈ

For example, when I first joined Twitter,

ਮਿਸਾਲ ਲਈ ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਟਵਿੱਟਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਜੁੜਿਆ

I found that so many of the people that I was following

ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਸੀ,ਦਿਮਾਗੀ

were talking about mental health and going to therapy

ਸਿਹਤਮੰਦੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਇਲਾਜ਼ ਲਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ,

in ways that had none of the stigma that they often do

ਅਜਿਹੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ,

when we talk about these issues in person.

ਜੋ ਅਕਸਰ ਆਪਸੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰਨ ਸਮੇ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਸੀ ,

Through them, the conversation around mental health was normalized,

ਇਹਨਾਂ ਰਾਂਹੀ ਦਿਮਾਗੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਗਲਬਾਤ ਆਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸੀ, ਤੇ

and they helped me realize that going to therapy was something

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਇਲਾਜ਼ ਲਈ ਜਾਣਾ

that would help me as well.

ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਲਾਹੇਵੰਦ ਸੀ।

Now, for many people,

ਹੁਣ, ਬਹੁਤ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ,

it sounds like a scary idea to be talking about all these topics

ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਉਪਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਟ ਉਪਰ ਐਨਾ ਖੁਲ ਕੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨਾ,

so publicly and so openly on the internet.

ਇਕ ਡਰਾਉਣੇ ਖਿਆਲ ਜਿਹਾ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ.

I feel like a lot of people think that it is a big, scary thing

ਮੈਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੋਕ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ

to be online if you're not already perfectly and fully formed.

ਕਿ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਟ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ , ਜਦ ,ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ.

But I think the internet can be actually a great place to not know,

ਪਰੰਤੂ ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚਦਾਂ ਹਾਂ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਟ ਅਸਲ ਚ ਅਣਜਾਣ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ, ਇਕ ਵਧੀਆ ਥਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ

and I think we can treat that with excitement,

ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਠੀਕ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ

because to me there's something important about sharing your imperfections

ਕਿਓਂ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਮੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਸੁਰੱਖਿਆਤਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ

and your insecurities and your vulnerabilities

with other people.

ਕੁਝ ਮਹਤੱਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ।

Now, when someone shares that they feel sad or afraid

ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਵਜੋਂ , ਜਦ ਕੋਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਜਾਂ ਡਰ

or alone, for example,

ਤੇ ਇਕੱਲਤਾ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ

it actually makes me feel less alone,

ਤਾਂ ਅਸਲ ਚ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਦ ਘੱਟ ਇਕੱਲ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ,

not by getting rid of any of my loneliness

ਆਪਣੇ ਇਕੱਲਪੁਣੇ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ , ਬਲਕਿ ਇਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾ ਕਿ

but by showing me that I am not alone

ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕਲਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਂ

in feeling lonely.

ਜੋ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੈ।

And as a writer and as an artist,

ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਲੇਖਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ

I care very much about making this comfort of being vulnerable

ਮੈਂ ਲੋਚਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਮੁਦਾਇਕ ਚੀਜ, ਕੁਝ ਅਜਿਹਾ ,

a communal thing, something that we can share with each other.

ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਕ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਏ, ਵਿਚ ਜਰੂਰ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ

I'm excited about externalizing the internal,

ਮੈਂ ਅੰਦਰੂਨੀ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਹਾਂ,

about taking those invisible personal feelings that I don't have words for,

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਦਿੱਖ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ , ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ,

holding them to the light, putting words to them,

ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ , ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਾ ਦੇਵਾਂ

and then sharing them with other people

ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਵਾਂ,

in the hopes that it might help them find words to find their feelings as well.

ਇਸ ਉਮੀਦ ਨਾਲ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਮੱਦਦ ਕਰੇਗਾ।

Now, I know that sounds like a big thing,

ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਚੰਭਾ ਲਗੇਗਾ

but ultimately I'm interested in putting all these things

ਪਰੰਤੂ ਅਖੀਰ ਚ ਮੈਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਟੇ,

into small, approachable packages,

ਪਹੁੰਚ ਵਿਚ, ਛੋਟੇ ਟੁਕੜਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਣ ਚ ਰੁਚੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ

because when we can hide them into these smaller pieces,

ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਜਦ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਟੇ ਟੁਕੜਿਆਂ ਚ ਛਿਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ

I think they are easier to approach, I think they're more fun.

ਮੈ ਸੋਚਦਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸੌਖੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈ ਸੋਚਦਾਂ ਉਹ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਮਜੇਦਾਰ ਹੈ

I think they can more easily help us see our shared humanness.

ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਇਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ,

Sometimes that takes the form of a short story,

ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਵਜੋਂ, ਉਹ ਇਕ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਂਵਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਲੁਭਾਵਣੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ

sometimes that takes the form of a cute book of illustrations, for example.

of a silly joke that I'll throw on the internet.

For example, a few months ago, I posted this app idea

ਅਜਿਹੀ 'ਕੁਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੈਰ ਸੇਵਾ ' ਐਪ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪਾਇਆ ,

for a dog-walking service

ਜਿਥੇ ਇਕ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਤੇ ਦਸਤਕ

where a dog shows up at your door and you have to get out of the house

ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਘਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲਣਾ ਹੈ

and go for a walk.

ਤੇ ਸੈਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ

ਮੈਂ ਈਮੇਲ 'ਚ 'ਬੈਸਟ' ਹਸਤਾਖਰ ਕਰਦਾਂ

it's short for "I am trying my best,"

ਤਾਂ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਹੈ ਕਿ,'ਮੈਂ ਬੈਸਟ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ,

which is short for "Please don't hate me, I promise I'm trying my best!"

"ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹੈ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਫਰਤ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕਰਦਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬੈਸਟ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ'

Or my answer to the classic icebreaker,

ਜਾਂ ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਤੇ ਘਿਸਿਆ ਪਿਟਿਆ ਜਵਾਬ ਹੈ,

And I find that when I post things like these online,

ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਚੀਜਾਂ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,ਤਾਂ

the reaction is very similar.

ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕਰਮ ਵੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ,

People come together to share a laugh,

to share in that feeling,

ਤੇ ਉਹ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ

and then to disburse just as quickly.

ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਗਾਇਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ

Yes, leaving me once again alone.

But I think sometimes these little gatherings can be quite meaningful.

ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਛੋਟੀਆਂ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤਾਂ ਕਾਫੀ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

For example, when I graduated from architecture school

ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਚ ਕਿੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਖਰੀ ਗੱਲ

your last conversation with?"

ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ? "ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ,

And I was thinking about my own friends who had moved away

ਜੋ ਵੱਖ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਚ ਦੂਰ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਜਾ ਚੁਕੇ ਸਨ ,

to different cities and different countries, even,

ਬਾਰੇ ਸੋਚ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ

and how hard it would be for me to keep in touch with them.

ਕਿ ਕਿਹਨਾਂ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋਏਗਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਰਾਬਤਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਖਨਾ।

But other people started replying and sharing their own experiences.

ਪਰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਣੇ ਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਦੇ ਤਜੁਰਬੇ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕਰਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ।

Somebody talked about a family member they had a falling out with.

ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ , ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉਹ ਟੁੱਟ ਗਏ ਨੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਦਸਿਆ।

Someone talked about a loved one who had passed away

ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ,ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ

quickly and unexpectedly.

ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਦੂਰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ , ਬਾਰੇ ਦਸਿਆ।

Someone else talked about their friends from school

ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਮਾਤੀ ਦੋਸਤ , ਜੋ ਦੂਰ ਜਾ ਚੁਕੇ ਸਨ

who had moved away as well.

ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ।

But then something really nice started happening.

ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਕੁਝ ਚੰਗਾ ਘਟਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ।

Instead of just replying to me,

ਸਿਰਫ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ

people started replying to each other,

ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਸ ਵਿਚ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ

and they started to talk to each other and share their own experiences

ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਫ਼ਤਗੂ ਕਰਨ ਲਗੇ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕਰਨ ਲਗ ਪਏ ,

and comfort each other

ਤੇ ਇਕ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਨ ਲਗ ਪਏ

and encourage each other to reach out to that friend

ਇਕ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਸਲਾ ਅਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਈ ਵੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਗ ਪਏ, ਉਸ ਦੋਸਤ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਚ

that they hadn't spoken to in a while

ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਕਾਫੀ ਸਮੇ ਤੋਂ ਬੋਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ

or that family member that they had a falling out with.

ਜਾਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਿਕ ਮੈਂਬਰ ,

And eventually, we got this little tiny microcommunity.

ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਲੱਗ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੇ ਸੀ

ਅਖੀਰ ਚ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਲਘੁ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ

It felt like this support group formed

of all sorts of people coming together.

ਸਾਰੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ

And I think every time we post online,

ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚਦਾਂ ਕਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹੀ ਵਾਰ ਵੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਕੁਝ ਪੋਸਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ,

every time we do this, there's a chance

ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਜਦ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੇਂ ਆਂ ,

that these little microcommunities can form.

ਤਾਂ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੈ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਲਘੂ ਮੱਦਦਗਾਰ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ਬਣ ਜਾਣ

There's a chance that all sorts of different creatures

ਐਸਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ

can come together and be drawn together.

ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਆਪਸ ਚ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣ।

And sometimes, through the muck of the internet,

ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ,ਇੰਟਰਨੇਟਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਚੋਂ ,

you get to find a kindred spirit.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹਮਖਿਆਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹੋ,

Sometimes that's in the reading the replies

ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਤੇ ਟਿੱਪਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ

and the comments sections and finding a reply that is particularly kind

ਤੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਖਣ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਦਿਆਲਤਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ

or insightful or funny.

ਜਾਂ ਸਮਝਦਾਰ ਜਾਂ ਮਜਾਕੀਆ ਹੋਵੇ।

Sometimes that's in going to follow someone

ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਕਰਣ ਕਰਨ ਚ

and seeing that they already follow you back.

ਅਤੇ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਅਨੁਕਰਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ

And sometimes that's in looking at someone that you know in real life

ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਇਥੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਣ ਚ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਚ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋਵੋ

and seeing the things that you write and the things that they write

ਤੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਪਾਉਣਾ ਕਿ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋਣ

and realizing that you share so many of the same interests as they do,

ਤੇ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਕਰਨਾ ਕਿ ਕਈ ਰੁਚੀਆਂ ਚ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੋਵੇ

and that brings them closer together to you.

ਤੇ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨੇੜੇ ਲੈ ਆਵੇ

Sometimes, if you're lucky,

ਕਦੇ ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਧਨੀ ਹੋ ,

you get to meet another alien.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਕ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹੋ

[when two aliebns find each other in a strange place,

(ਜਦ ਦੋ ਅਜਨਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਜੀਬ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ

it feels a litle more like home]

ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਘਰ ਵਾਂਗੂ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ)

But I am worried, too, because as we all know,

ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਵੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਜਿਵੇ ਆਪਾਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ

the internet for the most part doesn't feel like this.

ਕਿ ਇੰਟਰਨੇਟ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਤਰਾਂ ਇੰਝ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਨੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

We all know that for the most part,

ਅਸੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਜਿਆਦਾਤਰ ,

the internet feels like a place where we misunderstand each other,

ਇੰਟਰਨੈਟ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ , ਜਿਥੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਗਲਤ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਾਂ ,

where we come into conflict with each other,

ਜਿਥੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਸ ਚ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਚ ਆ ਜਾਨੇ ਹਾਂ

where there's all sorts of confusion and screaming and yelling and shouting,

ਜਿਥੇ ਹਰ ਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਲਝਣ ਤੇ ਚੀਕ ਚਿਹਾੜਾ ਤੇ, ਚਿਹਲਾਹਟ ਤੇ ਰੌਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,

and it feels like there's too much of everything.

ਇੰਝ ਲਗਦਾ ਇਥੇ ਹਰ ਚੀਜ ਦੀ ਹੱਦ ਹੈ

It feels like chaos,

ਇਥੇ ਗੜਬੜ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ ,

and I don't know how to square away the bad parts with the good,

ਤੇ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਕਿ ਬੁਰੇ ਹਿਸਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਿੰਝ ਮਿਲਾਂਵਾਂ ,

because as we know and as we've seen,

ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਤੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਵੀ ਹੈ,

the bad parts can really, really hurt us.

ਬੁਰੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੀਂ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ

It feels to me that the platforms that we use to inhabit these online spaces

ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਮੰਚ ਇਹਨਾਂ ,ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ

have been designed either ignorantly or willfully

,ਉਹ ਜਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਭੋਲੇਪਣ ਜਾਂ ਜਾਣ -ਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਤੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ, ਤੇ

to allow for harassment and abuse, to propagate misinformation,

ਦੁਰਵਰਤੋਂ ਲਈ, ਗਲਤ ਸੂਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਫੈਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ

to enable hatred and hate speech and the violence that comes from it,

ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਤੇ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਬਿਆਨੀ ਕਰਨ, ਤੇ ਜੋ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਜਦੀ ਹੈ , ਵਾਸਤੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ

and it feels like none of our current platforms

ਇੰਝ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਮੰਚ ਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਇਸਦਾ

are doing enough to address and to fix that.

ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਤੇ ਦਰੁਸਤੀ ਲਈ ਕਾਫੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਰ ਰਹੇਂ ਹੋਣ।

But still, and maybe probably unfortunately,

ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ , ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਬਦ ਕਿਸਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ

I'm still drawn to these online spaces, as many others are,

ਮੈਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਵੱਲ , ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਹਨ, ਖਿੱਚਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ,

because sometimes it just feels like that's where all the people are.

And I feel silly

ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ

and stupid sometimes

ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੂ ਲਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ

for valuing these small moments of human connection in times like these.

ਜੋ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਚ ਵੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਪਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

But I've always operated under this idea

ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਉਪਰ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ

that these little moments of humanness are not superfluous.

ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਾਨਵਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਪਲ ਬੇਲੋੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ.

They're not retreats from the world at all,

ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਦਮ ਖਿੱਚਣਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਲਿਕ

but instead they're the reasons why we come to these spaces.

ਇਹੀ ਉਹ ਕਾਰਣ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ

They are important and vital and they affirm and they give us life.

ਇਹ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ

And they are these tiny, temporary sanctuaries

ਇਹ ਛੋਟੀ, ਅਸਥਾਈ ਪਨਾਹਗਾਹਾਂ , ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦਿਖਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ,

that show us that we are not as alone as we think we are.

ਕਿਲਾ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸੋ, ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ

I think the inflatable metaphorical bouncy castle in this case

ਜੂਤੇ ਉਤਾਰੋਗੇ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ?)ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਚ ਇਹ ਫੁਲਣਯੋਗ ਅਲੌਕਿਕ ਉੱਛਲਦਾ ਕਿਲਾ,

is really our relationships and our connections to other people.

ਅਸਲ ਚ ਸਾਡੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਡੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਹਨ

And so one night,

ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਇਕ ਰਾਤ ,

when I was feeling particularly sad and hopeless about the world,

I shouted out to the void,

to the lonely darkness.

ਸੁੰਨੇ ਹਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਵਲ ਚੀਖਿਆ ,

I said, "At this point, logging on to social media

And this time, instead of the void responding,

ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਹਾਮੀ ਭਰਨ ਲਈ ਸੁੰਨ੍ਹੇਪਨ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ,

it was people who showed up,

ਲੋਕ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਏ ,

who started replying to me and then who started talking to each other,

ਉਹ ਲੋਕ , ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਸ ਚ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ,

and slowly this little tiny community formed.

ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਇਹ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਮੁਦਾਇ ਬਣਿਆ

Everybody came together to hold hands.

ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਫੜਨ ਲਈ ਨੇੜੇ ਆਇਆ ,

And in these dangerous and unsure times,

ਅਤੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਖ਼ਤਰਨਾਕ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਚ,

in the midst of it all,

ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਰਮਿਆਨ ,

I think the thing that we have to hold on to is other people.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਫੜੀ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ

And I know that is a small thing made up of small moments,

but I think it is one tiny, tiny sliver of light
