I'd like to introduce you to someone.

This is Jomny.

「Jomny（ジョムニー）」です

That's "Jonny" but spelled accidentally with an "m,"

何で「ム」があるジョムニーなのか 不思議かもしれませんね

in case you were wondering,

うっかりしてたからです

because we're not all perfect.

誰も完璧ではないですからね

Jomny is an alien

ジョムニーは異星人です

who has been sent to earth with a mission to study humans.

人類を研究する任務のため 地球に派遣されました

Jomny is feeling lost and alone and far from home,

ジョムニーは途方に暮れ 独りぼっちで 遠い故郷を恋しく思っています

and I think we've all felt this way.

みなさんも同じように感じたことが あるでしょう

Or, at least I have.

少なくとも私はあります

I wrote this story about this alien at a moment in my life

この異星人の話を創作した頃 私はまさに異星人のような

when I was feeling particularly alien.

疎外感を覚えていました

I had just moved to Cambridge and started my doctoral program at MIT,

and I was feeling intimidated and isolated and very much like I didn't belong.

But I had a lifeline of sorts.

See, I was writing jokes for years and years

and sharing them on social media,

and I found that I was turning to doing this more and more.

気がつくと その頻度が増していたのです

Now, for many people, the internet can feel like a lonely place.

多くの人にとってインターネットの世界は 孤独を感じる場と言えます

こんなふうに感じることもあります

It can feel like this,

a big, endless, expansive void

大きく 果てしなく だだっ広い空白

where you can constantly call out to it but no one's ever listening.

いくら呼びかけても 誰も一度たりとも聞いてない

But I actually found a comfort in speaking out to the void.

ところが その空白に向かって叫ぶと 私の心は和みました

I found, in sharing my feelings with the void,

自分の気持ちを空白に伝えていると

eventually the void started to speak back.

その空白から返事が 返ってくるようになりました

And it turns out that the void isn't this endless lonely expanse at all,

空白は無限で孤独な広がりでは ありませんでした

but instead it's full of all sorts of other people,

いろんな人が大勢 そこにいました

also staring out into it and also wanting to be heard.

みんなも空白を眺めていて 自分の声も聞いてほしいと願っています

Now, there have been many bad things that have come from social media.

ソーシャルメディアは悪い結果も たくさん生み出しています

I'm not trying to dispute that at all.

そこに疑いの余地はありません

To be online at any given point is to feel so much sadness

どんな時でもネットにつながると 悲しみや怒り、暴力を

強く感じます

and anger and violence.

It can feel like the end of the world.

この世の終わりのように 感じたりもします

Yet, at the same time, I'm conflicted

でも同時に 矛盾も感じます

because I can't deny the fact that so many of my closest friends

いま親友と呼べる人の多くとは そもそもオンラインで出会ったというのが

are people that I had met originally online.

紛れない事実だからです

And I think that's partly because there's this confessional nature

to social media.

It can feel like you are writing in this personal, intimate diary

全くプライベートな私的な日記に

書き込むような気持ちでありながら

that's completely private,

yet at the same time you want everyone in the world to read it.

同時に世界中のみんなに 読んでほしいのです

And I think part of that, the joy of that

おそらく それが楽しいのは

is that we get to experience things from perspectives from people

自分とまったく違う境遇の人の立場で

who are completely different from ourselves,

物事を体験することができるからで

and sometimes that's a nice thing.

For example, when I first joined Twitter,

I found that so many of the people that I was following

were talking about mental health and going to therapy

in ways that had none of the stigma that they often do

when we talk about these issues in person.

Through them, the conversation around mental health was normalized,

that would help me as well.

Now, for many people,

it sounds like a scary idea to be talking about all these topics

このような話題をネット上で 公然と大っぴらに話すなんて

so publicly and so openly on the internet.

危ないことだと感じられるでしょう

I feel like a lot of people think that it is a big, scary thing

まだ完璧に成熟していないのに オンラインで自分をさらけ出すのは

to be online if you're not already perfectly and fully formed.

とてつもなく危険だと 思っている人が多いようですが

But I think the internet can be actually a great place to not know,

私は インターネットはむしろ 未熟な人に役立つと考えます

and I think we can treat that with excitement,

そういう人にとって 刺激になると思うのです

because to me there's something important about sharing your imperfections

私が思うには 不完全な自分や 自分の不安や傷つきやすさを

and your insecurities and your vulnerabilities

他の人に伝えることが 重要な何かだからです

with other people.

Now, when someone shares that they feel sad or afraid

例えばある人が 悲しみや恐れ、孤独感などを

or alone, for example,

it actually makes me feel less alone,

私の孤独感はかえって和らぐ気がします

not by getting rid of any of my loneliness

それは孤独感を克服したからではなく

but by showing me that I am not alone

孤独を感じているのは 自分だけではないと

in feeling lonely.

確認できるからです

And as a writer and as an artist,

作家でアーティストでもある私は

I care very much about making this comfort of being vulnerable

このように弱い自分を認める心地よさを 皆で共感し

a communal thing, something that we can share with each other.

人とのつながりの中で お互いに 共有することを大切にしています

I'm excited about externalizing the internal,

内なる感情を表現することに 喜びを感じ

about taking those invisible personal feelings that I don't have words for,

言葉で表現できない 心の中の個人的な気持ちを取り上げ

holding them to the light, putting words to them,

光にかざし それにふさわしい言葉を与えて

and then sharing them with other people

他の人たちと分かち合うことで

in the hopes that it might help them find words to find their feelings as well.

その人たちも 自分の気持ちを表す言葉を 見つけてくれたらと思うからです

Now, I know that sounds like a big thing,

さて たいそうな話に感じるでしょうが

but ultimately I'm interested in putting all these things

でも私の最終的な狙いは そのような体験を

into small, approachable packages,

小さくて扱いやすい形にすることです

because when we can hide them into these smaller pieces,

そんな体験を小さくまとめられたら

I think they are easier to approach, I think they're more fun.

もっと扱いやすく もっと楽しめるように なると思うからです

I think they can more easily help us see our shared humanness.

誰もが持つ人間らしさを もっと感じられると思うからです

Sometimes that takes the form of a short story,

その形は 例えば 短編ストーリーや

sometimes that takes the form of a cute book of illustrations, for example.

挿絵の入った かわいらしい本だったりします

And sometimes that takes the form

そしてそれはネット上に載せた

of a silly joke that I'll throw on the internet.

くだらないジョークだったりもします

For example, a few months ago, I posted this app idea

例えば 数ヶ月前 私は犬の散歩サービスという

アプリのアイデアを投稿しました

for a dog-walking service

where a dog shows up at your door and you have to get out of the house

犬が玄関先まで訪ねてくるので あなたは家から出て

and go for a walk.

散歩に行くしかないというものです

Or, I like to share every time I feel anxious about sending an email.

また メールを送る不安を感じるたび これを共有したくなります

When I sign my emails "Best,"

メールの最後に書く 「Best（敬具）」は

it's short for "I am trying my best,"

「ベストを尽くしてます」の略で

which is short for "Please don't hate me, I promise I'm trying my best!"

「ベストを尽くしていますから どうか嫌わないで」の略なのです

Or my answer to the classic icebreaker,

あるいは場を和らげるための 私のお決まりの返事―

if I could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, I would.

「一緒に食事してくれるなら 生者でも死者でも構わない

I am very lonely.

そのくらい孤独なんだ」

And I find that when I post things like these online,

the reaction is very similar.

同じような反応があります

People come together to share a laugh,

一緒に笑いたいという人はすぐ集まり

to share in that feeling,

and then to disburse just as quickly.

またすぐに解散します

Yes, leaving me once again alone.

But I think sometimes these little gatherings can be quite meaningful.

でも このような小さな集まりには 大きな意味があるはずだと思います

For example, when I graduated from architecture school

例えば 大学の建築科を卒業し

and I moved to Cambridge,

I posted this question:

この質問を投稿しました

"How many people in your life have you already had

「あなたとの生涯最後の会話を

your last conversation with?"

すでに終えてしまった人が 何人いるでしょうか？」

And I was thinking about my own friends who had moved away

私の頭にあったのは 違う街や 違う国へ

to different cities and different countries, even,

引っ越していった自分の友達のことで つながりを保つことが

and how hard it would be for me to keep in touch with them.

難しくなるだろうと心配したのです

But other people started replying and sharing their own experiences.

ところがいろんな人が返信して 自分の体験を教えてくれました

Somebody talked about a family member they had a falling out with.

ある人は仲違いした家族のことを 話してくれました

Someone talked about a loved one who had passed away

ある人はあっと言う間に 突然逝ってしまった

quickly and unexpectedly.

大事な人のことを話してくれました

Someone else talked about their friends from school

私と同様に 引っ越していった

who had moved away as well.

学生時代の友人の話をする人もいました

But then something really nice started happening.

すると素晴らしいことが起きました

Instead of just replying to me,

私宛の返信だけではなく

people started replying to each other,

お互いの投稿に返信が付き始め

and they started to talk to each other and share their own experiences

お互いに会話をして体験を分かち合い

and comfort each other

いたわり合い

and encourage each other to reach out to that friend

しばらく話をしていない あの昔の友人や

that they hadn't spoken to in a while

仲違いした家族のあのひとりに

or that family member that they had a falling out with.

手を差し伸べてみるよう促しあったりしました

And eventually, we got this little tiny microcommunity.

やがて ささやかで小じんまりとした 小さなコミュニティが生まれました

It felt like this support group formed

いろんな人が一緒に集まったことで

of all sorts of people coming together.

支援グループができたように感じられました

And I think every time we post online,

ポストを投稿する度に

every time we do this, there's a chance

このような小さなコミュニティが

that these little microcommunities can form.

生まれる可能性があるのです

There's a chance that all sorts of different creatures

いろんな種類の生物が 一緒に集まり 惹かれ合うような

can come together and be drawn together.

可能性があります

And sometimes, through the muck of the internet,

すると時にはインターネットの雑音の中から

you get to find a kindred spirit.

心の友が見つかることもあります

Sometimes that's in the reading the replies

返信やコメント欄で目にした とりわけ優しい書き込みや

and the comments sections and finding a reply that is particularly kind

的を得た書き込みや 愉快な書き込みが

or insightful or funny.

心に残ることもあります

Sometimes that's in going to follow someone

時には誰かをフォローしてみると

and seeing that they already follow you back.

自分はすでにフォローされていたというのも 楽しいものです

And sometimes that's in looking at someone that you know in real life

実生活で知る人の投稿を

and seeing the things that you write and the things that they write

自分の投稿と見比べて

and realizing that you share so many of the same interests as they do,

関心の重なりがとても多いと気付き

and that brings them closer together to you.

さらに親近感を感じることもあります

Sometimes, if you're lucky,

時には 運がよければ

you get to meet another alien.

もう一人の異星人と 対面できるかもしれません

[when two aliebns find each other in a strange place,

it feels a litle more like home]

But I am worried, too, because as we all know,

でも心配もあります 誰もが知るように

the internet for the most part doesn't feel like this.

インターネットの大半は そんな雰囲気の場ではないからです

We all know that for the most part,

the internet feels like a place where we misunderstand each other,

そこは誤解が生じる場で

where we come into conflict with each other,

対立の場で

where there's all sorts of confusion and screaming and yelling and shouting,

様々な戸惑いや悲鳴や 怒鳴り声や大声が溢れかえり

and it feels like there's too much of everything.

いろんなことが多すぎる所だと 感じます

It feels like chaos,

混沌とした空気で

and I don't know how to square away the bad parts with the good,

良い部分と悪い部分との 線引きも無理なありさまです

because as we know and as we've seen,

すでに誰もが見て知っているように

the bad parts can really, really hurt us.

It feels to me that the platforms that we use to inhabit these online spaces

オンラインの空間に居場所を作る プラットフォームは

have been designed either ignorantly or willfully

何も考えないまま あるいはわざと

to allow for harassment and abuse, to propagate misinformation,

ハラスメントや嫌がらせを許し 誤った情報を拡散し

to enable hatred and hate speech and the violence that comes from it,

悪意や中傷発言やそれに伴う暴力を 許してしまうデザインだからです

and it feels like none of our current platforms

現状のどのプラットフォームも 課題に対応できず

are doing enough to address and to fix that.

解決への取り組みも足りていません

But still, and maybe probably unfortunately,

それでも 恐らく 思うに残念なのは

I'm still drawn to these online spaces, as many others are,

私も 多くの人も このオンライン空間に惹きつけられるのは

because sometimes it just feels like that's where all the people are.

そこにみんながいると分かっているからです

And I feel silly

ささいなつながりを重んじる自分は

and stupid sometimes

愚かでバカげてると思う時もあります

for valuing these small moments of human connection in times like these.

今は こんなご時勢なのに

But I've always operated under this idea

でも私の姿勢としては常々

that these little moments of humanness are not superfluous.

ささやかな人とのつながりは 余計なことではないと考えています

They're not retreats from the world at all,

それが隠れる場所になるからではなく

but instead they're the reasons why we come to these spaces.

むしろみんなが集まってくる 理由になるからです

They are important and vital and they affirm and they give us life.

重要で 必要なことで  前向きな人生の源になるものです

And they are these tiny, temporary sanctuaries

それは小さな 一時的な聖域ですが

that show us that we are not as alone as we think we are.

自分で思っているほど 孤独ではないと教えてくれる場です

And so yes, even though life is bad and everyone's sad

確かに人生は大変で 誰にも悲しみはあります

and one day we're all going to die --

死はいずれ訪れます

[look. life is bad. everyones sad.

We're all gona die, but i alredy bought this inflatable bouncey castle

so are u gona take Ur shoes off or not]

I think the inflatable metaphorical bouncy castle in this case

エアートランポリンが象徴するのは

is really our relationships and our connections to other people.

人間同士の関係や繋がりだと思っています

And so one night,

そこである晩

when I was feeling particularly sad and hopeless about the world,

私が特に世の中に対して 悲しみと絶望を感じていた時

I shouted out to the void,

空白の 孤独な暗闇に向かって 叫んでみました

to the lonely darkness.

I said, "At this point, logging on to social media

「今の時点でソーシャルメディアに ログオンしようとするのは

feels like holding someone's hand at the end of the world."

最後の頼みの綱として 誰かの手を握るような気分だ」

And this time, instead of the void responding,

するとこの時は 空白からの返事だけではなく

it was people who showed up,

人が集まってきました

who started replying to me and then who started talking to each other,

みんなが私の叫びに答えたり お互いに話をし始めると

and slowly this little tiny community formed.

少しづつ小さな小さな コミュニティが生まれました

Everybody came together to hold hands.

みんなが手を取り合うために 集まりました

And in these dangerous and unsure times,

今のような危険で不安な時代に

in the midst of it all,

まさに渦中に置かれたときに

I think the thing that we have to hold on to is other people.

人間同士のつながりを手放してはいけません

And I know that is a small thing made up of small moments,

短いひとときの重なりで たかが小さなことにすぎませんが

but I think it is one tiny, tiny sliver of light

それでも真っ暗な闇の中にある

in all the darkness.

かすかな一筋の光なのです
