In the 1950s, a psychiatrist named Eliot Slater

When I first got sick,

And as one patient told me,

we get it coming and going --

if you're a woman, you're told you're exaggerating your symptoms,

स्त्री रुग्ण असेल, तर तिला सांगितलं जातं, तू लक्षणं फुगवून सांगते आहेस.

but if you're a guy, you're told to be strong, to buck up.

पुरुष रुग्ण असेल, तर सांगितलं जातं, ताकद वाढवा, जोमाने लढा द्या.

And men may even have a more difficult time getting diagnosed.

My brain is not what it used to be.

Here's the good part:

So many diseases were once thought of as psychological

until the EEG was able to measure abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Multiple sclerosis could be misdiagnosed as hysterical paralysis

And recently, we used to think

but that's starting to change.

In Germany, scientists are starting to find evidence of autoimmunity,

What also gives me hope

रुग्णांची लवचिकता पाहून

is the resilience of patients.

माझी आशा वाढली आहे.

Online we came together,

आम्ही ऑनलाईन भेटून

and we shared our stories.

आमच्या कहाण्या एकमेकांना ऐकवल्या.

We devoured what research there was.

नवीन संशोधनासंबंधीची माहिती आत्मसात केली.

We experimented on ourselves.

स्वतःवर प्रयोग केले.

We became our own scientists and our own doctors

आम्ही स्वतःच स्वतःचे डॉक्टर, संशोधक झालो.

because we had to be.

नव्हे, व्हावंच लागलं.

And slowly I added five percent here, five percent there,

until eventually, on a good day,

I was able to leave my home.

I still had to make ridiculous choices:

Will I sit in the garden for 15 minutes, or will I wash my hair today?

But it gave me hope that I could be treated.

तरीही आपल्याला बरं वाटेल अशी आशा वाटू लागली.

I had a sick body; that was all.

माझं फक्त शरीर आजारी होतं, इतकंच.

And with the right kind of help, maybe one day I could get better.

आणि योग्य मदत मिळाली तर कधीतरी मी नक्की बरी होईन.

I came together with patients around the world,

मी जगभरातल्या रुग्णांच्या संपर्कात आले

and we started to fight.

आणि आम्ही लढा दिला.

We have filled the void with something wonderful,

आम्ही या विकाराबद्दलच्या मोकळ्या जागेत काही चांगलं आणलं आहे.

but it is not enough.

I still don't know if I will ever be able to run again,

or do any of those kinetic things that I now only get to do in my dreams.

But I am so grateful for how far I have come.

Progress is slow,

and that is a miracle.

I don't know what would have happened had I not been one of the lucky ones,

had I gotten sick before the internet,

had I not found my community.

I probably would have already taken my own life,

as so many others have done.

How many lives could we have saved, decades ago,

if we had asked the right questions?

if we decide to make a real start?

तर किती आयुष्यं वाचतील?

Even once the true cause of my disease is discovered,

आता माझ्या विकाराचं खरं कारण कळलं आहे.

if we don't change our institutions and our culture,

पण आपले विचार बदलणार नसतील,

we will do this again to another disease.

तर हेच दुसऱ्या एखाद्या विकाराबाबतीत घडू शकतं.

Living with this illness has taught me

या आजाराने मला शिकवलं,

that science and medicine are profoundly human endeavors.

are not immune to the same biases

Our immune systems are just as much a battleground for equality

as the rest of our bodies.

We need to listen to patients' stories,

and we need to be willing to say, "I don't know."

काही ठाऊक नसेल तर तसं सांगण्याची तयारी ठेवायला हवी.

"ठाऊक नसणं" हे सुंदर असतं.

"I don't know" is a beautiful thing.

"I don't know" is where discovery starts.

"ठाऊक नसण्यापासून" शोध सुरु होतो.

And if we can do that,

जर आपण

if we can approach the great vastness of all that we do not know,

या अज्ञाताची विशालता जाणू शकलो, तर

त्याच्या अनिश्चिततेची भीती वाटण्याऐवजी

and then, rather than fear uncertainty,

आपण त्या नवलाईचं स्वागत करू शकू.

maybe we can greet it with a sense of wonder.
