It is almost the end of the winter,

Actually, the coffee maker, the TV -- none of them are working.

Life outside also seems to have stopped.

There are no schools,

This is not the opening scene of a zombie apocalypse movie.

This is what happened in March 1989 in the Canadian province of Quebec,

when the power grid lost power.

The culprit?

A solar storm.

Solar storms are giant clouds of particles

ڕەشەبای خۆری تەنۆلکەی ھەوری زەبەلاحن

escaping from the Sun from time to time,

and a constant reminder that we live in the neighborhood of an active star.

And I, as a solar physicist,

I have a tremendous chance to study these solar storms.

But you see, "solar storm chaser"

is not just a cool title.

My research helps to understand where they come from,

توێژینەوەکەم یارمەتی دەدات لە تێگەشتنی شوێنی ھاتنیان،

how they behave

and, in the long run,

aims to mitigate their effects on human societies,

which I'll get to in a second.

At the beginning of the space exploration age 50 years ago only,

the probes we sent in space

revealed that the planets in our Solar System

constantly bathe in a stream of particles that are coming from the Sun

and that we call the solar wind.

And in the same way that global wind patterns here on Earth

can be affected by hurricanes,

the solar wind is sometimes affected by solar storms

that I like to call "space hurricanes."

کە حەز دەکەم پێی بڵێم "گەردەلولەکانی بۆشایی."

When they arrive at planets,

کاتێک دەگەنە ھەسارەکان،

they can perturb the space environment,

دەتوانن ژینگەی بۆشایی تێک بدەن،

which in turn creates the northern or southern lights,

کە لە بەرامبەردا ڕووناکییەکانی باکووری و باشووری دروست دەکات،

for example, here on Earth,

بۆ نمونە، لێرە لەسەر زەوی،

but also Saturn

and also Jupiter.

Luckily, here on Earth,

we are protected by our planet's natural shield,

a magnetic bubble that we call the magnetosphere

Nonetheless, solar storms can still be responsible

for disrupting satellite telecommunications and operations,

for disrupting navigation systems, such as GPS,

as well as electric power transmission.

All of these are technologies on which us humans rely more and more.

I mean, imagine if you woke up tomorrow without a working cell phone --

بیھێنە پێش چاوت ئەگەر ئەمڕۆ لە خەو ھەستایتایە بێ ئەوەی مۆبایلەکەت کاربکات

no internet on it,

بەبێ ئیتەرنێت،

which means no social media.

واتا بەبێ تۆڕە کۆمەڵایەتیەکان.

I mean, to me that would be worse than the zombie apocalypse.

بۆ من ئەوە خراپترە لە فیلمی زۆمبی.

By constantly monitoring the Sun, though,

لەڕێی بەردەوام چاودێریکردنی خۆر،

we now know where the solar storms come from.

ئێستا دەزانین کە ڕەشەبا خۆرییەکان لە کوێوە دێن.

They come from regions of the Sun

لە ھەرێمەکانی خۆرەوە دێن

where a tremendous amount of energy is being stored.

کە ڕێژەیەکی زۆر لە وزەی لێ کۆ دەکرێتەوە.

You have an example here,

لێرەدا نمونەیەکمان ھەیە،

as a complex structure hanging above the solar surface,

کە پێکھاتەیەکی ئاڵۆز لە سەرەوەی ڕووی خۆر ھەڵواسراوە

just on the verge of erupting.

ڕێک لەسەر کەناری تەقینەوە.

Unfortunately, we cannot send probes

بەداخەوە، ناتوانین پێوەرەکان بنێرین

in the scorching hot atmosphere of the Sun,

بۆ ناو گەرمییە سوتێنەرەکەی بەرگەھەوای خۆر،

where temperatures can rise up to around 10 million degrees Kelvin.

So what I do is I use computer simulations

بۆیە ئەوەی من دەیکەم بەکارھێنانی لێکچووی کۆمپیوتەرە

in order to analyze but also to predict the behavior of these storms

بۆ شیکردنەوە و ھەروەھا بۆ پێشبینیکردنی ڕەفتاری ئەو ڕەشەبایانە

when they're just born at the Sun.

This is only one part of the story, though.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، ئەمە تەنھا بەشێکی چیرۆکەکەیە.

When these solar storms are moving in space,

کاتێک ئەو ڕەشەبا خۆرییانە دەچنە ناو بۆشاییەوە،

some of them will inevitably encounter space probes

ھەندێکیان بە تەواوی ڕوبەڕوی پێوەرەکانی بۆشایی دەبنەوە

that we humans have sent in order to explore other worlds.

کە ئێمەی مرۆڤ ناردومانن بۆ گەڕان لە جیھانەکانی تر.

What I mean by other worlds is, for example, planets,

مەبەستم لە جیھانەکانی تر، بۆ نمونە، ھەسارەکانە،

such as Venus or Mercury,

وەکو ڤینۆس یان عەتارد،

but also objects, such as comets.

ھەروەھا شتی، وەکو ئەستێرە کلکدارەکان.

And while these space probes have been made

و کاتێک ئەو پێوەرانەی بۆشایی دروستکران

for different scientific endeavors,

بۆ ھەوڵدانی زانستی جیاواز،

they can also act like tiny cosmic meteorological stations

دەشتوانن وەکو وێستگەی کەشناسییانەی تۆزی گەردوونی بچوک ڕەفتار بکەن

and monitor the evolution of these space storms.

و چاودێری گەشەی ئەو ڕەشەبایانەی بۆشایی بکەن.

So I, with a group of researchers, gather and analyze this data

بۆیە من، لەگەڵ کۆمەڵێک توێژەر، کۆ دەبینەوە و ئەم زانیارییە شی دەکەینەوە

coming from different locations of the Solar System.

کە لە شوێنە جیاوازەکانی سیستەمی خۆرییەوە دێن.

And by doing so, my research shows that, actually,

و لەڕێی ئەمەوە، توێژینەوەکەم پیشانی دەدات، کە لە ڕاستیدا،

solar storms have a generic shape,

ڕەشەبای خۆرییەکان شێوەیەکی ڕەگەزییان ھەیە،

and that this shape evolves as solar storms move away from the Sun.

و ئەم شێوەیە گەشە دەکات کاتێک کە ڕەشەبا خۆرییەکان لە خۆر دوور دەکەونەوە.

And you know what?

و دەزانی چی؟

This is key for building tools to predict space weather.

ئەمە کلیلی بنیادنانی ئامرازی پێشبینیکردنی کەش و ھەوای بۆشاییە.

I would like to leave you with this beautiful image.

حەز دەکەم بەم وێنە جوانە بەجێتان بھێڵم.

This is us here on Earth,

ئەمە ئێمەین لێرە لەسەر زەوی،

this pale blue dot.

ئەم خاڵە شینە کاڵە.

And while I study the Sun and its storms every day,

و کاتێک ھەموو ڕۆژێک لە خۆر و ڕەشەباکانی دەکۆڵمەوە،

I will always have a deep love for this beautiful planet --

ھەمیشە خۆشەویستییەکی قووڵم ھەیە بۆ ئەم ھەسارە جوانە --

a pale blue dot indeed,

لەڕاستیدا خاڵێکی شینی کاڵە،

but a pale blue dot with an invisible magnetic shield

بەڵام خاڵێکی شینی کاڵە لەگەڵ قاوغێکی موگناتیسی نادیار

that helps to protect us.
