It is almost the end of the winter,

and you've woken up to a cold house,

which is weird, because you left the heater on all night.

You turn on the light.

불을 켭니다.

It's not working.

그런데 켜지지 않네요.

Actually, the coffee maker, the TV -- none of them are working.

사실 커피 메이커, TV, 아무것도 켜지지 않아요.

Life outside also seems to have stopped.

바깥 세상도 다 멈춘 것 같아요.

There are no schools,

학교도 쉬고

most of the businesses are shut,

상점도 대부분 문을 닫았고

and there are no working trains.

기차도 다니지 않아요.

This is not the opening scene of a zombie apocalypse movie.

좀비 영화의 한 장면을 말씀드리는 게 아닙니다.

This is what happened in March 1989 in the Canadian province of Quebec,

1989년 3월에 캐나다의 퀘벡 주에서 일어난 일입니다.

when the power grid lost power.

전력망 가동이 멈춘 일이 있었죠.

The culprit?

범인이 누구였을까요?

A solar storm.

바로 태양 폭풍입니다.

Solar storms are giant clouds of particles

태양 폭풍이란 이따금 태양에서 방출되는 미립자들로 이루어진 거대한 구름입니다.

escaping from the Sun from time to time,

and a constant reminder that we live in the neighborhood of an active star.

우리가 살아있는 항성 근처에 살고 있음을 끊임없이 상기시켜주고 있죠.

And I, as a solar physicist,

저는 태양 물리학자로서

I have a tremendous chance to study these solar storms.

이 태양 폭풍에 대해 연구할 기회가 굉장히 많습니다.

But you see, "solar storm chaser"

"태양 폭풍 추격자"라는 명칭이

is not just a cool title.

괜히 붙은 게 아니죠.

My research helps to understand where they come from,

제 연구의 목적은

태양 폭풍이 어디서 시작되는지와 어떻게 움직이는지 알려는 것입니다.

how they behave

and, in the long run,

궁극적으로는

aims to mitigate their effects on human societies,

태양 폭풍이 인간 사회에 미치는 영향을 줄이는 것이 목적이죠.

which I'll get to in a second.

이건 잠시 후 말씀드릴게요.

At the beginning of the space exploration age 50 years ago only,

우주 탐사 초창기인 불과 50년 전에

the probes we sent in space

우주로 보낸 탐사선을 통해

revealed that the planets in our Solar System

태양계에 있는 행성들이

constantly bathe in a stream of particles that are coming from the Sun

태양에서 방출된 입자들의 흐름에 끊임없이 휩싸인다는 걸 알아냈습니다.

and that we call the solar wind.

바로 태양풍이라고 부르는 현상이죠.

And in the same way that global wind patterns here on Earth

그런데, 지구에서 부는 바람의 양상이

can be affected by hurricanes,

허리케인에 의해 영향을 받는 것과 마찬가지로

the solar wind is sometimes affected by solar storms

태양풍도 때때로 태양 폭풍의 영향을 받기도 합니다.

that I like to call "space hurricanes."

저는 이것을 "우주 허리케인"이라 부릅니다.

When they arrive at planets,

우주 허리케인이 행성에 도착하면

they can perturb the space environment,

우주 환경을 교란시킬 수 있어요.

which in turn creates the northern or southern lights,

for example, here on Earth,

but also Saturn

and also Jupiter.

Luckily, here on Earth,

we are protected by our planet's natural shield,

a magnetic bubble that we call the magnetosphere

and that you can see here on the right side.

Nonetheless, solar storms can still be responsible

그럼에도 불구하고

여전히 태양 폭풍은 인공위성의 통신과 작동에 문제를 일으키고

for disrupting satellite telecommunications and operations,

for disrupting navigation systems, such as GPS,

GPS 같은 항법장치나

as well as electric power transmission.

전력 송전에도 문제를 일으킵니다.

All of these are technologies on which us humans rely more and more.

이들은 모두 인간이 점점 더 많이 의존하는 기술들이죠.

I mean, imagine if you woke up tomorrow without a working cell phone --

내일 아침에 일어났는데 핸드폰이 작동하지 않는다고 상상해보세요.

no internet on it,

인터넷도 안되고요.

which means no social media.

SNS를 할 수 없게 되는 거죠.

I mean, to me that would be worse than the zombie apocalypse.

저에겐 좀비 영화보다 더 끔찍한 일이에요.

(Laughter)

By constantly monitoring the Sun, though,

하지만, 태양을 계속 관찰함으로써

we now know where the solar storms come from.

우리는 태양 폭풍이 어디에서 시작되는지 알게 되었습니다.

They come from regions of the Sun

태양 폭풍은 태양에서 엄청난 양의 에너지가 축적된 지점에서 시작됩니다.

where a tremendous amount of energy is being stored.

You have an example here,

그 예를 하나 준비했는데요.

as a complex structure hanging above the solar surface,

태양 표면에 어떤 복잡한 구조가 만들어져

just on the verge of erupting.

분출되기 직전의 모습입니다.

Unfortunately, we cannot send probes

불행히도, 이곳에 탐사선을 보낼 수는 없습니다.

in the scorching hot atmosphere of the Sun,

where temperatures can rise up to around 10 million degrees Kelvin.

온도가 거의 1,000만 켈빈에 달하기 때문입니다.

So what I do is I use computer simulations

그래서 저는 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 사용합니다.

in order to analyze but also to predict the behavior of these storms

태양에서 폭풍이 발생하는 순간에 이들의 거동을 분석하고

when they're just born at the Sun.

예측하기 위해서죠.

This is only one part of the story, though.

하지만 이것들은 이야기의 일부에 지나지 않습니다.

When these solar storms are moving in space,

이 태양 폭풍들이 우주에서 움직이며

some of them will inevitably encounter space probes

우리 인간들이 우주 세계를 탐사하려고 보낸 우주선들과

that we humans have sent in order to explore other worlds.

불가피하게 마주칠 수도 있습니다.

What I mean by other worlds is, for example, planets,

제가 말한 우주 세계란

such as Venus or Mercury,

예를 들면, 금성이나 수성같은 행성들도 있지만

but also objects, such as comets.

혜성 같은 것도 포함됩니다.

And while these space probes have been made

이들을 대상으로 한 우주 탐사선들은

for different scientific endeavors,

저마다 과학적 탐구 목적이 다르고

they can also act like tiny cosmic meteorological stations

작은 우주 기상 관측소의 역할을 하면서

and monitor the evolution of these space storms.

우주 폭풍의 발달 과정을 관찰합니다.

So I, with a group of researchers, gather and analyze this data

그래서 저는 다른 연구원들과 함께

태양계의 여러 장소에서 관찰된 데이터들을 수집하고 분석했습니다.

coming from different locations of the Solar System.

And by doing so, my research shows that, actually,

그렇게 수행한 제 연구를 통해서

실제로 태양 폭풍은 포괄적인 형태를 지니고 있다는 사실을 알아냈죠.

solar storms have a generic shape,

and that this shape evolves as solar storms move away from the Sun.

또한 태양 폭풍이 태양으로부터 멀어지며 그 형태가 만들어진다는 것도 알았습니다.

And you know what?

그런데 말이죠.

This is key for building tools to predict space weather.

이건 우주의 날씨를 예측하기 위한 도구를 만드는 데 중요한 열쇠입니다.

but a pale blue dot with an invisible magnetic shield

that helps to protect us.
