Today, I want you to look at

ئەمڕۆ, ده‌مه‌وێت ئێوه‌ ته‌ماشای

children who become suicide bombers

ئه‌و منداڵانه‌ بکه‌ن که‌ خۆیان ده‌ته‌قێننه‌وه‌

through a completely different lens.

لە دیدێکی تەواو جیاوازەوە

In 2009, there were 500

لە ساڵی (٢٠٠٩)، نزیکەی ٥ سەد

bomb blasts across Pakistan.

ته‌قینه‌وه‌ی بۆمب هه‌بوو له‌ پاکستان

I spent the year working

ساڵێکم له‌ کارکردن

with children

له‌گه‌ڵ منداڵاندا به‌سه‌ر برد

who were training to become suicide bombers

ئه‌وانه‌ی که‌ مه‌شقیان ده‌کرد تا خۆیان بته‌قێننه‌وه‌

and with Taliban recruiters,

له‌گه‌ڵ نێردراوه‌کانی تاڵیبان

trying to understand how the Taliban

هه‌وڵدانیان بۆ تێگه‌یشتنی چۆنێتی

were converting these children

گۆڕینی ئه‌و منداڵانه‌ له‌لایه‌ن تاڵیبانه‌وه‌

into live ammunition

بۆ ژیانی چه‌کداری

and why these children were actively

وه‌ بۆچی ئه‌م منداڵانه‌ به‌ چالاکانه‌وه‌

signing up to their cause.

The Taliban now run their own schools.

ئێستا تاڵیبان قوتابخانه‌ی خۆیان هه‌یه‌ و به‌ڕێوه‌ی ده‌به‌ن

They target poor families

خێزانه‌ هه‌ژاره‌کان ده‌که‌نه‌ ئامانج

and convince the parents to send their children.

دایک و باوکان ڕازی ده‌که‌ن تا منداڵه‌کانیان بنێرن

In return, they provide free food and shelter

له‌ به‌رامبه‌ر ئه‌وه‌دا، ئه‌وان خواردن و که‌لوپه‌لی تر دابین ده‌که‌ن

and sometimes pay the families a monthly stipend.

وه‌ هه‌ندێ کات مانگانه‌ موچه‌ ده‌ده‌ن به‌ خێزانه‌کان

We've obtained a propaganda video

ڤیدیۆیه‌کی پڕوپاگه‌نداویمان ده‌ست که‌وت

made by the Taliban.

له‌لایەن تاڵیبانه‌وه‌ دروست کراوه‌

Young boys are taught justifications

کوڕه‌ گه‌نجه‌کان فێری پاساوهێنانه‌وه‌ ده‌که‌ن

for suicide attacks

بۆ په‌لاماردان و خۆته‌قاندنه‌وه‌

and the execution of spies.

وه‌ ته‌واوکردنی کارە جاسوسیه‌کان

I made contact with a child from Swat

په‌یوه‌ندیم له‌گه‌ڵ منداڵێکی خه‌ڵکی (سوات) کرد

who studied in a madrassa like this.

که‌ (مه‌دره‌سه )ی وه‌ک ئه‌مه‌ی خوێندوه‌

Hazrat Ali is from a

هه‌زرات علی له‌

poor farming family in Swat.

خێزانێکی هه‌ژاری جوتیاره‌ له‌ سوات هاتوه‌

He joined the Taliban a year ago

ساڵی ڕابردوو په‌یوه‌ندی به‌ تاڵیبانه‌وه‌ کردوه‌

when he was 13.

کاتێک (١٣) ساڵ بووه‌

How do the Taliban in your area get people to join them?

چۆن تاڵیبان له‌ناوچه‌که‌ی ئێوه‌ خه‌ڵکی ده‌ست ده‌که‌وت بۆ په‌یوه‌ندی کردن پێیانه‌وه‌؟

Hazrat Ali: They first call us to the mosque and preach to us.

هه‌زرات علی: یه‌که‌م جار ئه‌وان بانگمان ده‌که‌ن بۆ مزگه‌وت و ئامۆژگاریمان ده‌که‌ن

Then they take us to a madrassa

دواتر ئێمه‌ ده‌به‌ن بۆ مه‌دره‌سه‌

and teach us things from the Koran.

وه‌ قورئانمان فێرده‌که‌ن

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy: He tells me that children

شه‌رمین عوبه‌ید چینۆی: پێم ده‌ڵێت که‌ منداڵان

are then given months of military training.

دواتر بۆ چه‌ند مانگێک مه‌شقی سه‌ربازیان پێ ده‌کرێت

HA: They teach us to use machine guns, Kalashnikov,

هەزرات عەلی: ئه‌وان ئێمه‌ فێری به‌کارهێنانی ده‌مانچه‌و کڵاشینکۆف و

rocket launchers, grenades, bombs.

ته‌قاندنی ڕۆکێت و نارنجۆک و بۆمب ده‌که‌ن

They ask us to use them only against the infidels.

داوا له‌ ئێمه‌ ده‌که‌ن که‌ ته‌نها دژی کافره‌کان به‌کاریان بهێنین

Then they teach us to do a suicide attack.

دواتر ئێمه‌ فێر ده‌که‌ن که‌ خۆمان بته‌قێنینه‌وه‌

SOC: Would you like to carry out a suicide attack?

شەرمین عوبەید چینۆی: ئایها ده‌توانیت خۆت بته‌ قێنیته‌وه‌؟

HA: If God gives me strength.

هەزرات عەلی: ئه‌گه‌ر خوا هێز و توانام پێبدات

SOC: I, in my research,

شەرمین عوبەید چینۆی: من له‌ لێکۆڵینه‌وه‌که‌مدا

have seen that the Taliban have perfected

بینیومه‌ که‌ تاڵیبان زۆر به‌ باشی

the way in which they recruit

نێردراوه‌کانیان ئاماده‌ کردوه‌

and train children,

بۆ مه‌شق پێکردنی منداڵان

and I think it's a five-step process.

وه‌ پێم وایه‌ قۆناغێکی (٥) ئاستیه‌

Step one is that the Taliban prey

ئاستی یه‌که‌م ئه‌وه‌یه‌ که‌ تاڵیبان

on families that are large, that are poor,

خێزانه‌ گه‌وره‌ و هه‌ژاره‌کان ڕاو ده‌کات

that live in rural areas.

که‌ له‌ لادێکان ده‌ژین

They separate the parents from the children

منداڵه‌کان له‌دایک و باوکیان جیاده‌کاته‌وه‌

by promising to provide food, clothing,

به‌وه‌ی که‌ به‌ڵێنیان پێ ده‌دات به‌ دابین کردنی خواردن و جل و به‌رگ و

shelter to these children.

په‌ناگه‌ بۆ منداڵه‌کانیان

Then they ship them off, hundreds of miles away

دوایی بۆ سه‌دان میل دوریان ده‌خه‌نه‌وه‌

to hard-line schools

بۆ قوتابخانه‌ تونده‌کان

that run along the Taliban agenda.

که‌ ته‌نها ئه‌جێندای تاڵیبانی تێدا ده‌وترێته‌وه‌

Step two:

ئاستی دووه‌م

They teach the children the Koran, which is Islam's holiest book,

منداڵه‌کان فێری قورئان ده‌که‌ن که‌ پیرۆزترین کتێبی ئیسلامه‌

in Arabic, a language these children do not understand

به‌ عه‌ره‌بی، به‌و زمانه‌ی که‌ منداڵه‌کان لێی تێناگه‌ن و

and cannot speak.

ناتوانن قسه‌ی پێ بکه‌ن

They rely very heavily on teachers,

ئه‌وان زۆر پشت دەبەستن بە مامۆستاکان

who I have personally seen

که‌ خۆم به‌ تایبه‌تی بینیومه‌

distort the message to these children

که‌ مه‌به‌سته‌کان بۆ منداڵه‌کان به‌ش به‌ش ده‌که‌ن

as and when it suits their purpose to.

به‌شێوه‌یه‌ک که‌ له‌گه‌ڵ مه‌به‌سته‌کانیان بگونجێت

These children are explicitly forbidden

ئه‌م منداڵانه‌ به‌ ئاشکرا ڕێگریان لێ ده‌کرێت

from reading newspapers, listening to radio,

له‌ خوێندنه‌وه‌ی ڕۆژنامه‌کان، گوێگرتن له‌ ڕادیۆ

reading any books

خوێندنه‌وه‌ی هه‌ر کتێبێکی تر

that the teachers do not prescribe them.

که‌ مامۆستاکان باسیان نه‌کردبێت بۆیان

If any child is found violating these rules,

ئه‌گه‌ر هه‌ر منداڵێک بدۆزرێته‌وه‌ ئه‌م یاسایانه‌ی شکاندبێت

he is severely reprimanded.

به‌توندی سزا ده‌درێت

Effectively, the Taliban create

به‌شێوه‌یه‌کی کاریگه‌رانە، تاڵیبان

a complete blackout

ده‌توانێت به‌ ته‌واوی

of any other source of information for these children.

هه‌ر بابه‌تێکی تر لاببات و دایبنێت بۆ منداڵه‌کان

Step three: The Taliban want these children

ئاستی سێ یه‌م: تاڵیبان ده‌یه‌وێت ئه‌و منداڵانه‌

to hate the world that they currently live in.

ڕق له‌جیهان هه‌ڵبگرن که‌ ئێستا تیایدا ده‌ژین

So they beat these children --

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌، له‌ منداڵه‌کان ده‌دات

I have seen it;

من ئەوەم بینیومه‌

they feed them twice a day dried bread and water;

دوو ژه‌م نان و ئاویان ده‌ده‌نێ له‌ ڕۆژێکدا

they rarely allow them to play games;

زۆر به‌ ده‌گمه‌ن ڕێگه‌یان ده‌ده‌ن یاری بکه‌ن

they tell them that, for eight hours at a time,

پێیان ده‌ڵێن، بۆ هه‌ر هه‌شت کاتژمێرێک

all they have to do is read the Koran.

ئه‌وه‌ی که‌ پێویسته‌ بیکه‌ن خوێندنه‌وه‌ی قورئانه‌

The children are virtual prisoners;

ئه‌و منداڵانه‌ زیندانی ڕاسته‌ قینه‌ن

they cannot leave, they cannot go home.

ناتوانن بڕۆن، ناتوانن بگه‌ڕێنه‌وه‌ ماڵه‌وه‌

Their parents are so poor,

دایک و باوکیان زۆر هه‌ژارن

they have no resources to get them back.

هیچ ده‌سه‌ڵاتێکیان نیه‌ تا منداڵه‌کانیان بگه‌ڕێننه‌وه‌ ماڵه‌وه‌

Step four: The older members of the Taliban,

ئاستی چواره‌م: ئه‌ندامه‌ به‌ته‌مه‌نه‌کانی تاڵیبان

the fighters,

شه‌ڕکه‌ره‌کان

start talking to the younger boys

ده‌ست ده‌که‌ن به‌قسه‌کردن له‌گه‌ڵ کوڕه‌ گه‌نجه‌کان

about the glories of martyrdom.

له‌ باره‌ی شانازیه‌کانی شه‌هید بوون

They talk to them about how when they die,

باسی ئه‌وه‌ ده‌که‌ن که‌ چۆن کاتێک ده‌مرن

they will be received up

به‌رزده‌بنه‌وه‌

with lakes of honey and milk,

له‌گه‌ڵ گۆمێک هه‌نگوین و شیرا

how there will be 72 virgins

چۆن(٧٢) کچ

waiting for them in paradise,

چاوه‌ڕێیان ده‌که‌ن له‌ به‌هه‌شتدا

how there will be unlimited food,

چۆن خواردنی بێ کۆتاییان ده‌بێت

and how this glory

وه‌ چۆن ئه‌م سه‌رکه‌وتنه‌

is going to propel them to become

ده‌یان جوڵێنێت تا ببن

heroes in their neighborhoods.

به‌ پاڵه‌وان له‌ ناوچه‌کانی خۆیاندا

Effectively, this is the brainwashing process

به‌شێوه‌یه‌کی کاریگه‌رانه‌، ئه‌مه‌ پڕۆسه‌ی شۆردنه‌وه‌ی مێشکە

that has begun.

که‌ ده‌ستی پێکردووه‌

Step five: I believe the Taliban have

ئاستی پێنجه‌م: باوه‌ڕم وایه‌ تاڵیبان

one of the most effective

یه‌کێک له‌ کاریگه‌رترین

means of propaganda.

پڕوپاگه‌نده‌کانیان هه‌یه‌

Their videos that they use

ئه‌و ڤیدیۆیانه‌ی که‌ به‌کاری ده‌هینن

are intercut with photographs

که‌ تێکه‌ڵی وێنه‌ی

of men and women and children

پیاو و ئافره‌ت و منداڵی ده‌که‌ن

dying in Iraq and Afghanistan

که‌ له‌ عێراق و ئه‌فغانستان و

and in Pakistan.

پاکستان ده‌مرن

And the basic message is that the Western powers

وه‌ نامه‌ سەرەکیه‌که‌ ئه‌وه‌یە که‌ ده‌سه‌ڵاتدارانی ڕۆژئاوا

do not care about civilian deaths,

گرنگی ناده‌ن به‌ مردنی که‌سانی مه‌ده‌نی

so those people who live

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی ئه‌و که‌سانه‌ی که‌

in areas and support governments

له‌و ناوچانه‌ ده‌ژین و پاڵپشتی حکومه‌ته‌کان ده‌که‌ن

that work with Western powers are fair game.

که‌ له‌گه‌ڵ ده‌سه‌ڵاتدارانی ڕۆژئاوا کار ده‌که‌ن هه‌مان شێوه‌ی ئه‌وانن

That's why Pakistani civilians,

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌یه‌ خەڵکی مەدەنی پاکستانی

over 6,000 of whom have been killed in the last two years alone,

زیاتر له‌ (٦،٠٠٠) کەسیان لی کوژراوە له‌ دوو ساڵی ڕابردودا

are fair game.

ئەوە یاریەکی دادپەروەرانەیە

Now these children are primed

ئێستا ئه‌و منداڵانه‌ ئاماده‌ کراون

to become suicide bombers.

تا ببن به‌ خۆکوژ

They're ready to go out and fight

ئه‌وان ئاماده‌ن بچنه‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌ و شه‌ڕ بکه‌ن

because they've been told that this is

چونکه‌ پێیان وتراوه‌ که‌ ئه‌مه‌

effectively their only way

تاکه‌ ڕێگایه‌

to glorify Islam.

بۆ به‌رز ڕاگرتنی ئیسلام

I want you to watch another excerpt from the film.

ده‌مه‌وێت ئێوه‌ ته‌ماشای به‌شێکی تری فیلمه‌که‌ بکه‌ن

This boy is called Zenola.

ئه‌م منداڵه‌ ناوی (زێنۆلا)یه‌

He blew himself up, killing six.

ئه‌مه‌ خۆی ته‌قانده‌وه‌، شه‌ش که‌سی کوشت

This boy is called Sadik.

ئه‌م کوڕه‌ ناوی (سه‌دیق)ه‌

He killed 22.

٢٢ که‌سی کوشت

This boy is called Messoud.

ئه‌م کوڕه‌ ناوی(مه‌سعود)ه‌

He killed 28.

٢٨ که‌سی کوشت

The Taliban are running suicide schools,

تاڵیبان قوتابخانه‌ی فێربونی خۆکوشتن به‌ڕێوه‌ ده‌بات

preparing a generation of boys

نه‌وه‌یه‌کی کوڕ ئاماده‌ ده‌کات

for atrocities against civilians.

بۆ کاری دڕنده‌ دژی که‌سی مه‌ده‌نی

Do you want to carry out a suicide attack?

ئایا ده‌ته‌وێت خۆت بتەقێنیته‌وه‌؟

Boy: I would love to.

کوڕ: پێم خۆشه‌

But only if I get permission from my dad.

به‌ڵام، ته‌نها ئه‌گه‌ر باوکم مۆڵه‌تم بدات

When I look at suicide bombers younger than me, or my age,

کاتێک ته‌ماشای ئه‌و خۆ کوژانه‌ ده‌که‌م گه‌نجترن له‌ من

I get so inspired by their terrific attacks.

سه‌رسام ده‌بم بە هەستی هێرشبەری ترسناکی ئەوان

SOC: What blessing would you get

شەرمین عوبەید چینۆی: چ پیرؤزیه‌ک وه‌رده‌گری

from carrying out a suicide attack?

له‌ کاری خۆکوشتن

Boy: On the day of judgment, God will ask me,

کوڕ: له‌ ڕۆژی دوایدا، خودا پرسیارم لێده‌کات

"Why did you do that?"

بۆچی ئه‌وه‌ت کرد؟

I will answer, "My Lord! Only to make you happy!

من وه‌ڵام ده‌ده‌مه‌وه‌، خوای من" ته‌نها بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی تۆ دڵخۆش بکه‌م

I have laid down my life fighting the infidels."

ژیانم به‌سه‌ر برد له‌شه‌ڕکردنی کافران

Then God will look at my intention.

دوایی، خودا ته‌ماشای نیاز و مه‌به‌ستی من ده‌کات

If my intention was to eradicate evil for Islam,

ئه‌گه‌ر مه‌به‌سته‌که‌م له‌ناو بردنی خراپه‌ بووه‌ بۆ ئیسلام

then I will be rewarded with paradise.

ئه‌وه‌ به‌ به‌هه‌شت خه‌ڵات ده‌کرێم

Singer: ♫ On the day of judgment ♫

گۆرانی بێژ: له‌ ڕۆژی دوایدا

♫ My God will call me ♫

خودا بانگم ده‌کات

♫ My body will be put back together ♫

له‌شم وه‌ک خۆی دروست ده‌کرێته‌وه‌

♫ And God will ask me why I did this ♫

وه‌ خودا پرسیارم لێده‌کات بۆچی ئه‌مه‌م کرد

SOC: I leave you all with this thought:

شەرمین عوبەید چینۆی: هه‌مووتان به‌جێده‌هێڵم له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وبیرکردنەوەیەدا

If you grew up in these circumstances,

ئه‌گه‌ر تۆ له‌م دۆخانه‌دا گه‌وره‌ ببیت

faced with these choices,

به‌و هه‌ڵبژاردنه‌ ڕووبەڕوو بکرێیتەوە

would you choose to live in this world

ئایا ژیان له‌م جیهانه‌دا هه‌ڵ ده‌بژێریت

or in the glorious afterlife?

یان پیرۆزی ژیانی دوای مردن؟

As one Taliban recruiter told me,

وه‌ک نێردراوێکی تاڵیبان پیی وتم

"There will always be sacrificial lambs in this war."

هه‌میشه‌ به‌رخی قوربانی دراو ده‌بێت بۆ ئه‌م جه‌نگه‌
