Two years ago, after having served four years

دوساڵ لەمەو بەر پاش ئەوەی چوار ساڵ

in the United States Marine Corps

and deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan,

I found myself in Port-au-Prince, leading a team

We were going to the places that nobody else wanted to go,

the places nobody else could go, and after three weeks,

we realized something. Military veterans

are very, very good at disaster response.

And coming home, my cofounder and I,

دواتر خۆم و یەکێک لە هاوڕێکانم گەڕاینەوە

we looked at it, and we said, there are two problems.

تەماشای بارودۆخەکەمان کرد، ووتمان دوو کێشەمان هەیە

The first problem is there's inadequate disaster response.

یەکەمیان نەبوونی کاردانەوەی پێویست بۆ کارەساتەکان

It's slow. It's antiquated. It's not using the best technology,

کاردانەوەکان خێرا نین. هێندەی پێویست نین و باشترین تەکنەلۆژیاکان بەکار ناهێنن

and it's not using the best people.

هەروەها سوود لە باشترین کەسەکانیش وەر ناگرن

The second problem that we became aware of

کێشەی دووەمیش کە لێی بەئاگا بوین

was a very inadequate veteran reintegration,

دووبارە یەک خستنەوەی سەربازە بە ئەزموونەکان هێندەی پێوویست نەبوون

and this is a topic that is front page news right now

ئەمەش ئێستا سەردێڕی هەموو هەواڵەکانە چونکە

as veterans are coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan,

ئەو سەربازە کۆن و خاوەن ئەزموونانەی عێراق و ئەفغانستان جێدەهێڵن و بەرەو نیشتیمان دێنەوە

and they're struggling to reintegrate into civilian life.

تەقەڵای ئەوەیانە کە دووبارە ژیانێکی مەدەنی بۆ خۆیان بونیاد بنێنەوە

And we sat here and we looked at these two problems,

ئێمە لەوێ دانیشین و تەماشای ئەو دوو کێشەیەمان ئەکرد

and finally we came to a realization. These aren't problems.

بەڵام خۆشبەختانە بۆمان دەرکەوت کە ئەوانە کێشەنین

These are actually solutions. And what do I mean by that?

بەڵکوو لە ڕاستیدا چارەسەرن. مەبەستم لەم قسەیە چیە؟

Well, we can use disaster response as an opportunity

مەبەستم ئەوەیە کە ئێمە دتوانین کاردانەوەی کارەساتەکان وەک هەلێک بۆ

for service for the veterans coming home.

بۆ خزمەت کردن و گێرانەوەی سەربازە کۆنەکان بۆ نیشتیمان بەکار بهێنین

Recent surveys show that 92 percent of veterans want

to continue their service when they take off their uniform.

And we can use veterans to improve disaster response.

Now on the surface, this makes a lot of sense, and in 2010,

ئەمەش شتێکی ماقووڵە، لە ساڵی ٢٠١٠ دا

we responded to the tsunami in Chile,

ئێمە کاردانەوەمان هەبوو لە هەمبەر کارەساتی سونامی لە شیلی

the floods in Pakistan, we sent training teams to the Thai-Burma border.

But it was earlier this year, when one of our

original members caused us to shift focus in the organization.

This is Clay Hunt. Clay was a Marine with me.

We served together in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Clay was with us in Port-au-Prince. He was also with us in Chile.

Earlier this year, in March, Clay took his own life.

لە سەرەتای ئەمساڵدا کلەی خۆی کوشت

This was a tragedy, but it really forced us

ئەوە تراژیدیایەکی ناخۆش بوو بەڵام وای لێکردین

to refocus what it is that we were doing.

کە بیر لەوە بکەینەوە ئاخۆ ئێمە چ کارێک دەکەین

You know, Clay didn't kill himself because of what happened

دەزانن کلەی لەبەر ئەو ڕووداوانە خۆی نەکووشت کە

in Iraq and Afghanistan. Clay killed himself

لە عێراق و ئەفغانستاندا ڕوویاندا بەڵکوو خۆی کوشت

because of what he lost when he came home.

لەبەر ئەو شتانەی کەلەدەستی دابوو کاتێک گەڕایەوە بۆ نیشتمان

He lost purpose. He lost his community.

ئەو ئامانجەکانی لە دەستدا بوو. کۆمەڵگای لە دەست دابوو

And perhaps most tragically, he lost his self-worth.

لە هەمووشی ناخۆشتر ئەو نرخی خۆی لەدەستدا

And so, as we evaluated, and as the dust settled

بۆیە وەک ئێمە هەڵسەنگاندمان بۆ کرد خاکی

from this tragedy, we realized that, of those two problems --

سەر ئەم تراژیدیایەمان هەڵدایەوە دوو کێشەمان لە

in the initial iteration of our organization,

کارە ناوخۆییە دووبارەکانی دامەزراوەکەماندا بە دیکرد

we were a disaster response organization that was using

ئێمە دامەزراوەی کاردانەوەی ڕو بەڕو بونەوەی کارەساتەکان بووین کەسوودمان وەردەگرت لە

veteran service. We had a lot of success,

and we really felt like we were changing the disaster response paradigm.

But after Clay, we shifted that focus, and suddenly,

as a veteran service organization that's using disaster response.

Because we think that we can give that purpose

and that community and that self-worth back to the veteran.

And tornadoes in Tuscaloosa and Joplin, and then later

گێژەڵۆکەکانی توسکالوسا و جوبلین و ڕوداوی

Hurricane Irene, gave us an opportunity to look at that.

بورکانەکانی ئیرین هەلی ئەوەی بۆ ڕەخساندین کە دووبارە تەماشای کارەکان بکەینەوە

Now I want you to imagine for a second an 18-year-old boy

ئێستا دەمەوێت بۆ چرکەیەک دیمەنی کوڕێکی ١٨ ساڵان بێننە پێش چاوی خۆتان

who graduates from high school in Kansas City, Missouri.

کە دەرچوی قۆناغی ئامادەیی شاری کانساسە لە میزۆری

He joins the Army. The Army gives him a rifle.

ئەو پەیوەندی بە سوپاوە کرد، سوپاش تفەنگی شەشخانەی دایە

They send him to Iraq.

ئەوان ناردیان بۆ عێراق

Every day he leaves the wire with a mission.

هەر ڕۆژەی ئەرکێکی لەسەر شان بوو

That mission is to defend the freedom of the family that he left at home.

بەڵام ئەرکەکانی بۆ بەرگری کردن بوو لە ئازادی خێزانەکەی کە لە نیشتمان بوو

It's to keep the men around him alive.

ئەرکی ئەو بۆ پاراستنی کەسانی چواردەوری بوو بە زیندویی

It's to pacify the village that he works in.

بۆیە ئەرکەکانی دەکرد تاکو ئەو دێیەی کە کاری تێدا دەکرد هێمن بێت

He's got a purpose. But he comes home [to] Kansas City, Missouri,

ئەو ئامانجێکی هەبوو، بەڵام گەڕایەوە بۆ نیشتمان بۆ شاری کانساس لە میزۆری

maybe he goes to college, maybe he's got a job,

لەوانەیە بچێتە زانکۆ، یاخود پێدەچێت کارێک بکات

but he doesn't have that same sense of purpose.

بەڵام ئەو ئامانجەی نامێنێت کە پێشتر هەیبوو

You give him a chainsaw. You send him to Joplin, Missouri

مشارێکی کارەبایی دەدەیتێ. دەینێریت بۆ جوبلین لە میزۆری

after a tornado, he regains that.

دوای زریانێک ، ئەو کات ئەو هەست و ئامانجەی پێشووی لا دروست دەبێتەوە

Going back, that same 18-year-old boy graduates from high school

ئەگەر بگەڕێینەوە بۆ دواوە، ئەو کوڕە ١٨ ساڵەی کە دەرچووی قۆناغی ئامادەیی بوو

in Kansas City, Missouri, joins the Army,

لە قوتابخانەی شاری کانساس لە میزۆری، پەیوەندی کرد بە سوپاوە

the Army gives him a rifle, they send him to Iraq.

سوپاش تفەنگێکی شەشخانەی پێدا و ناردی بۆ عێراق

Every day he looks into the same sets of eyes around him.

هەموو ڕۆژێک تەماشای ئەو چاوانەی دەکرد کە لە چوار دەوری بوون

He leaves the wire. He knows that those people have his back.

سەربازگەکە جێ دەهێڵێت، دەزانێت کە ئەو کەسانە ئاگایان لێ دەبێت

He's slept in the same sand. They've lived together.

کە لە گەڵیدا لەسەر هەمان خاک دەخەون و پێکەوە دەژین و

They've eaten together. They've bled together.

پێکەوە نان دەخۆن و پێکەوە خوێنیان دەڕژێت

He goes home to Kansas City, Missouri.

دەچێتەوە بۆ نیشتمان بۆ شاری کانساس لە میزۆری

He gets out of the military. He takes his uniform off.

واز لە سەربازی دەهێنێت و جلە سەربازییەکانی دادەنێت

He doesn't have that community anymore.

چیتر ئەو هەستە نیشتمانییەی نامێنێت

But you drop 25 of those veterans in Joplin, Missouri,

بەڵام ئەگەر ٢٥ کەس لەو سەربازە کۆنانە لە جوبلین و میزۆری

they get that sense of community back.

پێکەوە دا بنێیت، ئەو هەستەیان لا دروست دەبێتەوە

Again, you have an 18-year-old boy who graduates

جارێکی تر،کوڕێکی ١٨ ساڵ، کە دەرچووی

high school in Kansas City.

قۆناغی ئامادەییە لە شاری کانساس

He joins the Army. The Army gives him a rifle.

پەیوەندی بە سوپاوە دەکات، سوپاش چەکێکی شەشخانەی دەداتێ

They send him to Iraq.

دەینێرن بۆ عێراق

They pin a medal on his chest. He goes home to a ticker tape parade.

مەدالیایەک دەکەنە ملی و دەچێتەوە بۆ نیشتمان

He takes the uniform off. He's no longer Sergeant Jones

جلە سەربازییەکانی دادەنێت، ئەو چیدی ئەفسەر جۆنس نییە

in his community. He's now Dave from Kansas City.

لە ناو کۆمەڵگەکەیدا. ئێستا ئەو (دەیڤ)ە خەڵکی شاری کانساسە

He doesn't have that same self-worth.

چیتر نرخی خۆی نازانێت

But you send him to Joplin after a tornado,

بەڵام کە ناردت بۆ جوبلین دوای زریانێک

and somebody once again is walking up to him

کەسێکی تر دەچێت بۆلای و

and shaking their hand and thanking them for their service,

دەستی گوشین و سوپاسی کردن بۆ مەرامی خۆیان

now they have self-worth again.

جارێکی تر نرخی خۆیان دەزانن

I think it's very important, because right now

پێم وایە ئەمە شتێکی زۆر گرنگە، چونکە ئێستا

somebody needs to step up,

کەسێک پێویستی بە هەنگاوێکە بەرەو پێشەوە

and this generation of veterans has the opportunity

وە ئەم چینە لە سەربازە کۆن و بە ئەزموونەکان

to do that if they are given the chance.

ئەگەر چانسی بدرێتێ دەتوانن بەرەو پێش بچن
