Nature's my muse and it's been my passion.

سروشت هیوا و ئاواتی منە و بووە بە هەست و سۆز بۆ من

As a photographer for National Geographic, I've portrayed it for many.

وەک وێنەگرێکی (ناشناڵ جۆگرافی)، وێنەی زۆرم گرتوە

But five years ago, I went on a personal journey.

بەڵام، پێنج ساڵ پێش ئێستا، گەشتێکی تایبەتیم ئەنجامدا

I wanted to visualize the story of life.

دەمویست جیرۆکی ژیان ببینم

It's the hardest thing I've ever attempted,

ئەوە قورسترین شت بوو کە ئەنجامم دابێت

and there have been plenty of times when I felt like backing out.

چەندین کات هەبوە کاتێک هەستم بە کەوتن کردوە

But there were also revelations.

بەڵام هەروەها چەندین دۆزینەوە هەبوە

And one of those I'd like to share with you today.

دەمەوێت یەکێک لەوانە ئەمڕۆ لەگەڵ ئێوە باس بکەم

I went down to a remote lagoon in Australia, hoping to see the Earth

بەرەو گۆمێکی دوور ڕۆشتم لە ئوستورالیا بەهیوای بینینی زەوی

the way it was three billion years ago,

بەو شێوەیەی کە سێ بلیۆن ساڵ پێش ئێستا هەبوە

back before the sky turned blue.

پێش ئەو کاتەی کە ئاسمان شین ببێت

There's stromatolites down there --

لە خوارەوە (سترۆماتۆلیتس)ی زۆر لێێە

the first living things to capture photosynthesis --

یەکەم زیندەوەر کە تیشکە پێکهاتنی ڕووەکی وەرگرتوە

and it's the only place they still occur today.

وە ئەوە تەنها شوێنە کە هێشتا لە ئەمڕۆدا پەیدا دەبن

Going down there was like entering a time capsule,

لەبەشی خوارەوە کەپسولێکی چونە ناو (کات)ی لێبوو

and I came out with a different sense of myself in time.

کە هاتمە دەرەوە هەستم بە کاتێکی جیاواز کرد

The oxygen exhaled by those stromatolites

ئۆکسجینەکە لەلایەن ئەو (سترۆماتۆلیتس)نە هەناسەی پێدەدرا

is what we all breathe today.

وەک ئەوەی کە ئێمە ئەمڕۆ هەناسە دەدەین

Stromatolites are the heroes in my story.

سترۆماتۆلیتسەکان پاڵەوانی چیرۆکەکەی منن

I hope it's a story that has some resonance for our time.

هیوادارم ئەوە چیرۆکێک بێت کە ڕەنگدانەوەی هەبێت لەسەر ژیانی من

It's a story about you and me, nature and science.

ئەوە چیرۆکێکە لەبارەی من و تۆوە، سروشت و زانست

And with that said, I'd like to invite you for

لەگەڵ ئەو وتەیە، دەمەوێت بانگتان بکەم بۆ

a short, brief journey of life through time.

گەشتێکی کورتی ژیانبەهۆی کاتەوە

Our journey starts in space, where matter condenses into spheres over time ...

گەشتەکەمان لە بۆشاییەوە دەست پێدەکات، کە بەهۆی کاتەوە باسی تەنە گۆییەکان لە وێوە ڕوویانداوە

solidifying into surface, molded by fire.

ڕەقبونی بەشی دەرەوە، بەهۆی ئاگرەوە قاڵبی گرتوە

The fire gave way, Earth emerged -- but this was an alien planet.

ئاگرەکە نەماو زەوی دەرکەوت.... بەڵام ئەوە هەسارەیەکی دزەکراو بوو

The moon was closer; things were different.

مانگ نزیکتر بووە، شتەکان جیاواز بوون

Heat from within made geysers erupt -- that is how the oceans were born.

گەرمی بەهۆی کوڵینەوە هەڵچوە... بە،شێوەیە زەریاکان دروست بوون

Water froze around the poles and shaped the edges of the Earth.

ئاو لەدەرەوەی خەمسەرەکان بەستی و قەراخەکانی زەوی دروست کرد

Water is the key to life, but in frozen form, it is a latent force.

ئاو کلیلی سەرەکی ژیانە، بەڵام لەشێوەی بەستودا هێزێکی شاراوەیە

And when it vanishes, Earth becomes Mars.

وە کاتێک ئاو نامێنێت، زەوی دەبێت بە مارس

But this planet is different -- it's roiling inside.

بەڵام ئەم هەسارەیە جیاوازە..... لەناوەوە دروست دەبێتەوە

And where that energy touches water, something new emerges: life.

کاتێک ئەو وزەیە لەگەڵ ئاو یەک دەگرێت، شتێکی تازە دەردەکەوێت ئەویش ژیانە

It arises around cracks in the Earth.

بەهۆی شکانەکانی دەوروبەری زەوی دروست دەبێت

Mud and minerals become substrate; there are bacteria.

قوڕ و کانزاکان توند دەبنەوە، چەندین بەکتریا هەیە

Learn to multiply, thickening in places ...

فێربونی گەورەبوون، تەنک بونەوە لەچەند شوێنێکدا

Growing living structures under an alien sky ...

زیادبونی شێوازی ژیان لە ژێر ئاسمانێکی دزە بۆکراودا

Stromatolites were the first to exhale oxygen.

سترۆماتۆلیتسەکان یەکەم بوون لە هەناسەدانی ئۆکسجیندا

And they changed the atmosphere.

وە کەشوهەواکەیان گۆڕی

A breath that's fossilized now as iron.

هەناسەیەک کە بوە بەبەرد وەک ئاسنی ئێستایە

Meteorites delivered chemistry, and perhaps membranes, too.

نەیزەکەکان کیمیایان بەرهەم هێنا، وە لەوانەیەئەتەمەکانیش

Life needs a membrane to contain itself

ژیان پێویستی بە ئەتەم هەیە بۆ ڕاگرتنی خۆی

so it can replicate and mutate.

تا بتوانێت وەڵامی هەبێت بۆ کارەساتەکان و بگۆڕێت

These are diatoms, single-celled phytoplankton

ئەمانە ئەتۆمی دوانە و تاکی قەوزە ڕووەکین

with skeletons of silicon ...

لەگەڵ ئێسکە پەیکەری سلیکۆندا

circuit boards of the future.

شێوازی خولی داهاتوە

Shallow seas nurtured life early on, and that's where it morphed

ژیان لە ئاوە تەنکەکان زووتر دەستی پێکرد، ئەوەبوو بە شێوەیەکی تایبەتی گۆڕا

into more complex forms.

بۆ فۆڕمی ئاڵۆزتر

It grew as light and oxygen increased.

بەزیادبونی ئۆکسجین و ڕووناکی ئەویش گەورەبوو

Life hardened and became defensive.

ژیان لەسەر تەنگانە ڕاهات و بوو بە بەرگریکار

It learned to move and began to see. The first eyes grew on trilobites.

دەست بە جوڵە کردنو بینین کرد. یەکەم بینین لەسەر پاشماوە بەردبوەکان دەستی پێکرد

Vision was refined in horseshoe crabs,

بینینەکانی ڕوون بووەیەوە لە ناو ناڵی قڕژاڵی دەریاکان

among the first to leave the sea.

لەناو ئەوانەی یەکەمجار زەریا بەجێدەهێڵێت

They still do what they've done for ages, their enemies long gone.

هێشتا ئەوان ئەوە دەکەن کە چەندین ساڵ لەسەری ڕاهاتوون، دوژمنەکانیان ماوەیەکی زۆرە ڕۆشتوون

Scorpions follow prey out of the sea. Slugs became snails.

قڕژاڵەکان بەدوای نێچیرەکانیان ڕۆشتنە دەرەوەی دەریاکان. کرمەکان بوون بە لوول پێچ

Fish tried amphibian life. Frogs adapted to deserts.

ماسیەکان ژیانی وشکانیان تاقیکردەوە. بۆقەکان بە ژیانی گەرمی وشکانی ڕاهاتن

Lichens arose as a co-op. Fungi married algae ...

قەوزەکان وەک مشەخۆر دەرکەوتن. کەڕووەکان لەگەڵ قەوزەکان تێکەڵ بوون

clinging to rock, and eating it too ... transforming barren land.

بە بەردەکانوە لکان، وە هەروەها دەیانخوارد.... گۆڕینی ووشکانی

True land plants arose, leafless at first.

ڕوويکی ڕاستەقینەی وشکانی دەرکەوت کە سەرتا بێگەڵا بوون

Once they learn how to stay upright, they grew in size and shape.

کاتێک فێربوون بە ڕێکی بوەستن، لە قەبارەو بارستایدا زیادیان کرد

The fundamental forms of ferns followed,

شێوازە سەرەتاییەکان ڕووەک دەستی پێکرد

to bear spores that foreshadowed seeds.

بۆ هەڵگرتنی تۆوەکان کە لە پێشودا هەبوون

Life flourished in swamps.

ژیان لە زەلکاوەکاندا گەشایەوە

On land, life turned a corner. Jaws formed first; teeth came later.

لەسەر ووشکانی، ژیان چووە گۆشەیەکەوە، شەویلگە سەرەتا دروست بوو، دوایی ددانەکان پەیدابوون

Leatherbacks and tuataras are echoes from that era.

پشتە پێست و تواتاراس لەو ناوچەیەدا دەنگی دایەوە

It took time for life to break away from water,

هەندێک کاتی وویست هەتا ژیان لە ئاو جیا ببێتەوە

and it still beckons all the time.

وە هێشتا هەموو کاتێک ئەو فریو دەدات

Life turned hard so it could venture inland.

ژیان زۆر هەوڵیدا سەرەڕۆیی بکات

And the dragons that arose are still among us today.

ئەو دراگۆنانەی کە پەیدابوون هێشتا هەتا ئەمڕۆش لەناوماندان

Jurassic Park still shimmers in part of Madagascar,

هێشتا سەردەمی جوراسی لەبەشەکانی مەداقشەر

and the center of Brazil,

وە لەناوەڕاستی بەڕازیلدا دەبریسکێتەوە

where plants called "cycads" remain rock hard.

کە ڕووەکەکان پێیان دەوترێت (سایگادس) وەک بەرد دەمێننەوە

Forests arose and nurtured things with wings.

دارستانەکان پەیدا بوون و شتی باڵداری بەرهەم هێنا

One early form left an imprint, like it died only yesterday.

شوێن پێی یەکێک لە فۆڕمە بەجێماوەکان ماوە وەک ئەوەی کە دوێنێ مردبێت

And others fly today like echoes of the past.

وە هەندێکی تریان دەفڕن وەک دەنگدانەوەیەکی ڕابردوو

In birds, life gained new mobility.

شێوازێکی نوێ بۆ باڵندەکان دروست بوو

Flamingos covered continents. Migrations got underway.

فلامینگۆ هەموو کیشوەرکانی داپۆشیوە. کۆچکردن شێوەیەکی ژێر بەژێری وەرگرتوە

Birds witnessed the emergence of flowering plants.

باڵندەکان دەرکەوتنی ڕووەکە گوڵدارەکانیان بینی

Water lilies were among the first.

شلێری ئاوی لە ناو یەکەمینەکاندا بوو

Plants began to diversify and grew, turning into trees.

ڕوەکەکان دەستیان کرد بە جیابوونەوەو گەورە بوون، گۆڕان بۆ دارەکان

In Australia, a lily turned into a grass tree,

لە ئوستوڕاڵیا، شلێرێک گۆڕا بۆ گیا

and in Hawaii, a daisy became a silver sword.

وە لە هاوای بەیبون بوو بە شمشێری زیوی

In Africa, Gondwana molded Proteas.

لە ئەفریقا، گۆندوانا گۆڕا بۆ پڕۆتین

But when that ancient continent broke up, life got lusher.

بەڵام کاتێک کیشوەرە کۆنەکان لێکترازان، ژیان پشووەیەکی دا

Tropical rainforests arose, sparking new layers of interdependence.

دارستانە باراناوییە خولگەییەکان دەرکەوتن، توێژاڵێکی تازەی هەوبەشی دروست کرد

Fungi multiplied. Orchids emerged, genitalia shaped to lure insects ...

کەڕووەکان زیادیان کرد. (ئۆرچادس)ەکان دەرکەوتن، ئەندامی زاوزێی مێروەکانی پێک هێنا

a trick shared by the largest flower on Earth.

شێوازێک کە لەلایەن گەورەترین گوڵەوە لەسەر زەوی بەکارهات

Co-evolution entwined insects and birds and plants forever.

مێروە باڵندەکان و ڕووەکە مشەخۆرەکان شێوازی دووانەیان وەرگرت

When birds can't fly, they become vulnerable.

کاتێک باڵندەکان ناتوانن بفڕن، لاواز دەبن

Kiwis are, and so are these hawks trapped near Antarctica.

کیویسەکان ئەوانەن لەگەڵ داڵەکان لە نزیک (ئەنتارکیتا) کەوتنە تەڵەوەو گیران

Extinction can come slowly, but sometimes it arrives fast.

قاتو قڕی و نەمان بەهێواشی دێت بەڵام هەندێک جار زۆر بەخێرایی دەگات

An asteroid hits, and the world went down in flames.

کە لە (ئەستیرۆید) دەدات، ئاگری هەموو جیهان نامێنێت

But there were witnesses, survivors in the dark.

بەڵام چەند شایەتحاڵێک هەبوون کە لە تاریکیەکە ڕيزگاریان بوە

When the skies cleared, a new world was born.

کاتێک ئاسمانەکان پاک بوونەوە، جیهانێکی تازە لەدایک بوو

A world fit for mammals. From tiny shrews [came]

جیهانێک کە بۆ شیردەرەکان دەگونجێت. لە مشکە لوت درێژەکان

tenrecs, accustomed to the dark.

کە بەتاریکی ڕاهاتبون

New forms became bats. Civets.

شێوازێکی نوێی شەمشەمە کوێرە. سیڤێتەکان

New predators, hyenas, getting faster and faster still.

ڕاوچیە تازەکان، کەمتیارەکان، هێشتا خێراتر و خێراتر دەبن

Grasslands created opportunities.

وشکانیە گیاییەکان چانسی زیاتر دەڕەخسێنێت

Herd safety came with sharpened senses.

پاراستنی ئاژەڵەکان بوو بە بەخێوکردن

Growing big was another answer, but size always comes at a price.

گەورەبوون وەڵامێکی تر بوو بەڵام هەمیشە قەبارە لە پێشدابوو

Some mammals turned back to water.

هەندێک لە شیردەرەکان گەڕانەوە بۆ ئاوەکان

Walruses adapted with layers of fat. Sea lions got sleek.

فیلە دەریاییەکان چینێکی چەوری تریان دروست کرد، شیری دەریا لوس بوون

And cetaceans moved into a world without bounds.

گیانەوەرە ئاوییەکانی وەک نەهەنگ بە بێسنور بەجیهاندا دەگەڕان

There are many ways to be a mammal. A 'roo hops in Oz;

ڕێگای زۆر هەیە بۆ بوون بە شیردەر (ڕۆۆ) بەناو (ئۆز)دا بازدەدات

a horse runs in Asia; and a wolf evolves stilt legs in Brazil.

ئەسپێکە لە ئاسیا طادەکات، گورگێک قاچ لاری لێ پەیدا دەبێت لە بەڕازیل

Primates emerge from jungles, as tarsiers first,

هاوڕێیەتی پێشینە لە جەنگەکانەوە دەرکەوت، (تەرسیس) مەیمونێکی بچوکی سەر داردە، یەکەم بووە لەمەدا

becoming lemurs not much later.

پاش ماوەیەکی کەم دەبێتبە لیمور، مەیمونی کلک درێژ

Learning became reinforced. Bands of apes ventured into the open.

بەهێز فێربوو. باندی مەیمونەکان بەشێوەیەکی دیار سەرەڕۆییان دەکرد

And forests dried out once more. Going upright became a lifestyle.

دووبارە دارستانەکان توشی بێئاوی بوونەوە،. بەشی سەرەوە ژیان تیایدا خۆش بوو

So who are we? Brothers of masculine chimps,

کەواتە ئێمە کێین؟ برای شەمپازیە نێرینەکانین

sisters of feminine bonobos? We are all of them, and more.

خوشکی بۆنۆبۆ مێینەکانین؟ ئێمە هەموویانین و زیاتریش

We're molded by the same life force.

ئێمە بەهامن شێوەی ئەو ژیانە گۆڕاوین

The blood veins in our hands

خوێن هێنەرەکانی ناو دەستمان

echoed a course of water traces on the Earth.

وەک شوێنەواری ئاوەکان وایە لەسەر زەوی

And our brains -- our celebrated brains --

وە مێشکمان.... مێشکە ئامادە کراوەکەمان

reflect a drainage of a tidal marsh.

وەک ڕواندنی ڕوەکی ناو زەلکاوەکانە

Life is a force in its own right. It is a new element.

ژیان بە شێوەی خۆی هێزێکە. ئەوە نیشانەیەکی تازەیە

And it has altered the Earth. It covers Earth like a skin.

ئەوە زەوی گۆڕیوە. وەک پێست زەوی دادەپۆشێت

And where it doesn't, as in Greenland in winter,

کاتێک کە ناتوانێت وەک لە (گرین لاند) لە زستاندا

Mars is still not very far.

هێشتا مارس زۆر دوور نیە

But that likelihood fades as long as ice melts again.

بەڵام ئەو گریمانە دەپوکێتەوە هەتا دووبارە توانەوەی سەهۆڵەکان

And where water is liquid, it becomes a womb

کاتێک ئاوەکە شل دەبێت، وەک منداڵدانێک دەبێت

for cells green with chlorophyll -- and that molecular marvel

بۆ خانە سەوزەکان لەگەڵ کلۆرۆفیل..... ئەو گەردە سەیرە

is what's made a difference -- it powers everything.

ئەوەیە کە جیاوزییەک دروست دەکات.... هێز بە هەموو شتەکا دەدات

The whole animal world today lives on a stockpile

هەموو زیندەوارنی جیهان لە ئەمڕۆدا لەسەر عەمبارکراوێکی یەدەگ دەژی

of bacterial oxygen that is cycled constantly

لەو ئۆکسجینە بەکتریاڵەی کە هەمیشە دەخولێتەوە

through plants and algae, and their waste is our breath,

بەناو ڕووەکەکان و قەوزەکاندا و ئەوەی کە ئەوان دەریدەدەن ئێمە هەناسەی پێدەدەین

and vice versa.

وە بە پێچەوانەوە

This Earth is alive, and it's made its own membrane.

ئەم زەوییە دەژی، وە خۆی ئەتەمی خۆی دروست دەکات

We call it "atmosphere." This is the icon of our journey.

ئێمە پێی دەڵێین (بەرگە هەوا)ب ئەمە ئایکۆنی گەشتەکەمانە

And you all here today can imagine and will shape where we go next.

ئەمڕۆ کە هەمووتان لێرەن دەتوانن بیربکەنەوە نکە جاری داهاتوو بچین بۆ کوێ
