Nature's my muse and it's been my passion.

പ്രകൃതി എന്റെ പ്രിയതമയും ആവേശവുമാണ്.

As a photographer for National Geographic, I've portrayed it for many.

നാഷണല്‍ ജ്യോഗ്രഫിക്കിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രഫര്‍ എന്ന നിലക്ക് ഞാന്‍ അത് വളരെപ്പേര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

But five years ago, I went on a personal journey.

പക്ഷെ അഞ്ചു വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുന്‍പ്‌ ഞാന്‍ ഒരു വ്യക്തിഗതമായ യാത്രക്ക് തിരിച്ചു.

I wanted to visualize the story of life.

ഞാന്‍ ജീവന്റെ കഥ ചിത്രീകരിക്കാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

It's the hardest thing I've ever attempted,

ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ഇക്കാര്യം,

and there have been plenty of times when I felt like backing out.

അതിനാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ പിന്തിരിയാന്‍ ആലോചിച്ച അവസരങള്‍ ധാരാളം ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

But there were also revelations.

പക്ഷെ അവിടെ തന്നെ ചില വെളിപാടുകളും ഉണ്ടായി.

And one of those I'd like to share with you today.

അവയില്‍ ഒന്ന് ഞാന്‍ ഇന്നു നിങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം പങ്കുവക്കട്ടെ.

I went down to a remote lagoon in Australia, hoping to see the Earth

ഞാന്‍ ഓസ്ട്റേലിയയിലെ വിദൂരമായ കായലുകളില്‍ ഒന്നിലേക്ക് പോയി.

the way it was three billion years ago,

അവിടെ 3 ബില്യണ്‍ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുംമുന്‍പുള്ള, ആകാശം നീലയാകുന്നതിനു മുംപുള്ള

back before the sky turned blue.

ഭൂമിയെ കണ്ടെത്താമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയില്‍

There's stromatolites down there --

അതിന്റെയടിത്തട്ടില്‍ സ്ട്രോമറ്റോലിറെസ്‌ ഉണ്ട് –

the first living things to capture photosynthesis --

പ്രകാശസംസ്ലേഷണം ആദ്യമായി ചെയ്ത ജീവനുള്ള വസ്തുക്കള്‍

and it's the only place they still occur today.

ഇവിടെ മാത്രമാണ്‌ അതിന്നും സംഭവിക്കുന്നത്‌

Going down there was like entering a time capsule,

ആ അടിത്തട്ടില്‍ പോകുന്നത് സമയ ചെപ്പിനുള്ളിലിറങ്ങുന്നത്‌ പോലെയാണ്

and I came out with a different sense of myself in time.

എന്നിട്ട് ഞാന്‍ തിരിച്ച് വന്നത് ഒരു വ്യത്യസ്തമായ കാലബോധത്തോടെയാണ്.

The oxygen exhaled by those stromatolites

ആ സ്ട്രോമറ്റോലിറെസ്‌കള്‍ ശ്വസിച്ച ഒക്സിജെന്‍ ആണ്

is what we all breathe today.

നാം ഇന്നും ശ്വസിക്കുന്നത്.

Stromatolites are the heroes in my story.

ആ സ്ട്രോമറ്റോലിറെസ്‌കള്‍ ആണ്‌ എന്റെ കഥയിലെ നായകര്‍ .

I hope it's a story that has some resonance for our time.

ഈ കാലത്തും അനുരണനം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഒരു കഥയാണിതെന്ന് ഞാന്‍ കരുതുന്നു.

It's a story about you and me, nature and science.

ആ കഥ എന്നെയും നിങ്ങളെയും പ്രകൃതിയെയും ശാസ്ത്രത്തെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ളതാണ്.

And with that said, I'd like to invite you for

ഈ ആമുഖത്തോടെ, കാലത്തിലൂടെ

a short, brief journey of life through time.

ജീവന്റെ ഒരു കൊച്ചു യാത്രയിലേക്ക് ഞാന്‍ നിങളെ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു.

Our journey starts in space, where matter condenses into spheres over time ...

നമ്മുടെ യാത്ര ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് മാറ്റര്‍ (വസ്തു) കാലങ്ങളിലൂടെ രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്ന സ്പേസിലാണ് (സ്ഥലം).

solidifying into surface, molded by fire.

അതിനു അഗ്നി കാഠിന്യം നല്‍കുന്നു.

The fire gave way, Earth emerged -- but this was an alien planet.

അഗ്നി വഴി മാറുകയും ഭൂമി (കര) വരുകയും ചെയ്തു – പക്ഷെ അതൊരു അപരിചിത ഗ്രഹമായിരുന്നു.

The moon was closer; things were different.

അന്ന് ചന്ദ്രന്‍ നമ്മുടെ വളരെ അടുത്തായിരുന്നു – എല്ലാം വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരുന്നു.

Heat from within made geysers erupt -- that is how the oceans were born.

പ്രകൃതിയിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന ഉഷ്ണ ജലത്തിന്റെ ഉറവക്കുള്ളിലെ ചൂട്, അത് പൊട്ടി തെറിക്കാന്‍ കാരണമായി. അങ്ങനെയാണ് കടല്‍ പിറന്നത്‌.

Water froze around the poles and shaped the edges of the Earth.

ധൃവങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ചുറ്റിലും ജലം ഘനീഭവിച്ചു. അവ ഭൂമിക്കു അതിരുകള്‍ നിര്‍മിച്ചു.

Water is the key to life, but in frozen form, it is a latent force.

ജലം ജീവന്റെ താക്കോലാണ്, പക്ഷെ ഘനീഭവിച്ച രൂപത്തില്‍ അത് ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ശക്തിയാണ്.

And when it vanishes, Earth becomes Mars.

ജലം ഇല്ലാതെയായാലോ ഭൂമി മറ്റൊരു ചൌവ്വ ആയിമാറും.

But this planet is different -- it's roiling inside.

പക്ഷെ ഈ ഗ്രഹം വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ഇതിനുള്ളില്‍ എപ്പോഴും തിളച്ചുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു.

And where that energy touches water, something new emerges: life.

എന്നിട്ട് ആ ഉര്‍ജം ജലത്തെ സ്പര്‍ശിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പുതിയ ഒരു സംഗതി ഉണ്ടാവുന്നു: ജീവന്‍.

It arises around cracks in the Earth.

Mud and minerals become substrate; there are bacteria.

Learn to multiply, thickening in places ...

Stromatolites were the first to exhale oxygen.

And they changed the atmosphere.

അവ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാക്കി.

A breath that's fossilized now as iron.

ഈ ശ്വാസം ഇന്നു ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ രൂപത്തില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുന്നു.

Meteorites delivered chemistry, and perhaps membranes, too.

മെറ്റെരോയിറ്റുകള്‍ നമുക്ക് രസതന്ത്രവും, ഒരുപക്ഷെ മേംബ്രെനുകളും തന്നു.

Life needs a membrane to contain itself

ജീവന് അതിനെ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുവാന്‍ മേംബ്രെനുകള്‍ ആവശ്യമാണ്

so it can replicate and mutate.

അപ്പോള്‍ അതിനു വിഭജിക്കാനും വിഘടിക്കാനും സാധിക്കും

These are diatoms, single-celled phytoplankton

with skeletons of silicon ...

Shallow seas nurtured life early on, and that's where it morphed

ആഴംകുറഞ്ഞ കടലുകള്‍ ജീവന്റെ ആദ്യരൂപങ്ങളെ വളര്‍ത്തി,

into more complex forms.

അവിടെയാണ് അത് കൂടുതല്‍ സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണമായ രൂപങ്ങളിലേക്കു മാറിയത്.

It grew as light and oxygen increased.

വെളിച്ചവും ഓക്സിജനും കൂടുതല്‍ ലഭ്യമായതോടെ ഇത് വളര്‍ന്നു.

Life hardened and became defensive.

It learned to move and began to see. The first eyes grew on trilobites.

Vision was refined in horseshoe crabs,

among the first to leave the sea.

They still do what they've done for ages, their enemies long gone.

അവ കാലങ്ങളായി ചെയ്തിരുന്നത് തന്നെ ഇപ്പോഴും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അവരുടെ ശത്രുക്കള്‍ ഇന്നില്ലാതായിരിക്കുന്നു.

Scorpions follow prey out of the sea. Slugs became snails.

പഴുതാരകള്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ ഇരകളെത്തേടി കടലിനു വെളിയില്‍ വന്നു. സ്ളഗ്ഗുകള്‍ ഒച്ചുകളായി മാറി.

Fish tried amphibian life. Frogs adapted to deserts.

മീനുകള്‍ ഉഭയജീവികളാവാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു. തവളകള്‍ മരുഭൂകളില്‍ വസിക്കാനും.

Lichens arose as a co-op. Fungi married algae ...

പൂപ്പലുകള്‍ പരശ്രയ്‌ജീവികളായി. പായലുകള്‍ അല്ഗയുമായി സഹവസിച്ചു.

clinging to rock, and eating it too ... transforming barren land.

പാറയോട് ഒട്ടിപിടിച്ചും അതിനെ തിന്നും...തരിശു നിലങ്ങളെ രൂപാന്തരപ്പെടുത്തി.

True land plants arose, leafless at first.

യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ കര സസ്യങ്ങള്‍ വളര്‍ന്നു, ആദ്യം ഇലയില്ലാത്തവ.

Once they learn how to stay upright, they grew in size and shape.

നേരെനില്‍ക്കുവാന്‍ പഠിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം, അവ രൂപത്തിലും വലുപ്പത്തിലും വളര്‍ന്നു.

The fundamental forms of ferns followed,

പന്നലുകളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന രൂപമായിരുന്നു തുടര്‍ന്ന് വന്നത്.

to bear spores that foreshadowed seeds.

തങ്ങളുടെ വിത്തുകള്‍ വിതക്കാന്‍ .

Life flourished in swamps.

ജീവന്‍ ചതുപ്പുനിലങ്ങളില്‍ ആര്‍ത്തു വളര്‍ന്നു

On land, life turned a corner. Jaws formed first; teeth came later.

കരയിലും ജീവന്‍ ഒരു ഇടംകണ്ടെത്തി. ആദ്യം താടിയാണു രൂപപ്പെട്ടത്. പിന്നെ പല്ലുകള്‍

Leatherbacks and tuataras are echoes from that era.

കറുത്ത ആമകളും ഒരു തരം പല്ലികളും ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റൊലികള്‍ ആണ്.

It took time for life to break away from water,

ജീവന് കടലിനെ പിരിഞ്ഞു പോരാന്‍ സമയമെടുത്തു

and it still beckons all the time.

അതിപ്പോഴും തിരിച്ചു വിളിക്കുന്നു

Life turned hard so it could venture inland.

And the dragons that arose are still among us today.

And others fly today like echoes of the past.

In birds, life gained new mobility.

പക്ഷികളിലൂടെ ജീവന് പുതിയ ചലനരൂപം ലഭ്യമായി.

Flamingos covered continents. Migrations got underway.

ഫ്ലാമിന്ഗോകള്‍ ഭൂഗണ്ടങ്ങളെ തരണം ചെയ്തു. പലായനം ഒരു ചര്യയായി.

Birds witnessed the emergence of flowering plants.

പക്ഷികള്‍ പൂച്ചെടികളുടെ ഉത്ഭവത്തിനു സാക്ഷികളായി.

Water lilies were among the first.

ആമ്പലുകള്‍ ആയിരുന്നു ഇതില്‍ ആദ്യം.

Plants began to diversify and grew, turning into trees.

ചെടികള്‍ വിവിധങ്ങളായി വളര്‍ന്നു മരങ്ങളായി മാറി.

In Australia, a lily turned into a grass tree,

ഒരു ലിലി ചെടി പുല്‍ മരമായി മാറി

and in Hawaii, a daisy became a silver sword.

ഒരു ഡെയ്സി ചെടി "സില്‍വര്‍ സ്വോട്" എന്ന സൂര്യകാന്തി ചെടിയായി.

In Africa, Gondwana molded Proteas.

ഗോണ്ട്വാന പ്രോടീസിനെ (ഒരു തരം സൌത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ പൂ ചെടി) രൂപപ്പെടുത്തി.

But when that ancient continent broke up, life got lusher.

പക്ഷെ ആ പുരാതന ഭൂഗണ്‍ണ്ടം വിഘടിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ജീവന്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ സമൃദ്ധമായി.

Tropical rainforests arose, sparking new layers of interdependence.

Fungi multiplied. Orchids emerged, genitalia shaped to lure insects ...

a trick shared by the largest flower on Earth.

Co-evolution entwined insects and birds and plants forever.

When birds can't fly, they become vulnerable.

Kiwis are, and so are these hawks trapped near Antarctica.

Extinction can come slowly, but sometimes it arrives fast.

An asteroid hits, and the world went down in flames.

But there were witnesses, survivors in the dark.

When the skies cleared, a new world was born.

ആകാശം തെളിഞ്ഞതോടെ ഒരു പുതിയ ലോകം പിറന്നു വീണു.

A world fit for mammals. From tiny shrews [came]

സസ്തനികള്‍ക്കുതകുന്ന ലോകം.

tenrecs, accustomed to the dark.

കൊച്ചു ഷ്രൂസില്‍ (ഷ്രൂ - എലിയെ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന സസ്തനി) നിന്നും ഇരുട്ടിനെ ശീലിച്ച ടെന്‍റെക്സ് (മറ്റൊരു തരം ചെറു സസ്തനി) ഉണ്ടായി.

New forms became bats. Civets.

പുതിയ രൂപങ്ങള്‍ വവ്വാലുകളും വെരുകുകളും ആയി മാറി.

New predators, hyenas, getting faster and faster still.

പുതിയ വേട്ട മൃഗങ്ങള്‍ , കഴുതപ്പുലികള്‍ . അവ കൂടുതല്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ വേഗം കൈവരിച്ചു.

Grasslands created opportunities.

പുല്‍മേടുകള്‍ അവസരങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കി.

Herd safety came with sharpened senses.

കൂര്‍മ്മതയുള്ള ഇന്ദ്രിയങ്ങള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം സംഘം ചേരുന്നതിന്റെ സുരക്ഷിതത്വം വന്നു.

Growing big was another answer, but size always comes at a price.

വളര്‍ന്നു വലുതാകുന്നതായിരുന്നു മറ്റൊരു ഉത്തരം. പക്ഷെ വലിപ്പത്തിന് അതിന്റേതായ വില കൊടുക്കെണ്ടാതായുണ്ട്.

Some mammals turned back to water.

ചില സസ്തനികള്‍ വെള്ളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോയി

Walruses adapted with layers of fat. Sea lions got sleek.

മേദസ്സിന്റെ അടുക്കുകളോടെ നീര്‍ക്കുതിരകള്‍ക്ക് മാറ്റം വന്നു. കടല്‍ സിംഹങ്ങള്‍ മെലിഞ്ഞു.

And cetaceans moved into a world without bounds.

തിമിംഗലങ്ങള്‍ ആകട്ടെ, നിയന്ത്രണമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ലോകത്തേക്ക് കൂട് മാറി.

There are many ways to be a mammal. A 'roo hops in Oz;

സസ്തനിയാവാന്‍ ധാരാളം വഴികള്‍ ഉണ്ട്. ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ ഒരു കംഗാരുവും

a horse runs in Asia; and a wolf evolves stilt legs in Brazil.

Primates emerge from jungles, as tarsiers first,

becoming lemurs not much later.

Learning became reinforced. Bands of apes ventured into the open.

പഠനം ഒഴിവക്കനവാത്ത്‌തായി. ആള്‍ക്കുരങ്ങന്‍മാരുടെ കൂട്ടം തുറന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വന്നു.

And forests dried out once more. Going upright became a lifestyle.

കാടുകള്‍ വീണ്ടും നശിച്ചു. ഉയര്‍ന്നു വരുന്നത് ഒരു ജീവിതശൈലിയായി.

So who are we? Brothers of masculine chimps,

അത് കൊണ്ട് ആരാണ് നമ്മള്‍ ? പൌരുഷമാര്‍ന്ന ചിമ്പാന്‍സികളുടെ സഹോദരന്മാരോ?

sisters of feminine bonobos? We are all of them, and more.

അതോ സ്ത്രീത്വമാര്‍ന്ന ബോണോബോസ് ചിമ്പാന്‍സികളുടെ സഹോദരിമാരോ? നമ്മള്‍ അതെല്ലാമാണ്‌. പിന്നെ മറ്റു ചിലതും.

We're molded by the same life force.

നാം രൂപപെട്ടത്‌ ഒരേ ജീവനോടെയാണ്.

The blood veins in our hands

നമ്മുടെ കൈകളിലെ ഞരമ്പുകള്‍

echoed a course of water traces on the Earth.

ഭൂമിയിലെ ജലരേഖകളെ പ്രതിധ്വനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

And our brains -- our celebrated brains --

നമ്മുടെ തലച്ചോറ് – ഏറെ ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട തലച്ചോറ് –

reflect a drainage of a tidal marsh.

ചതുപ്പുനിലങ്ങളിലെ നീര്‍ചാലുകളെയും.

Life is a force in its own right. It is a new element.

ജീവന്‍ തനിമയാര്‍ന്ന ഒരു ശക്തിയാണ്. ഒരു പുതിയ അംശം.

And it has altered the Earth. It covers Earth like a skin.

അത് ഭൂമിയെ മാറ്റിമറിച്ചു. അത് ഭുമിയുടെ തോല്‍ കവചമാണ്.

And where it doesn't, as in Greenland in winter,

അങ്ങിനെയല്ലാത്തിടത്ത്, അതായത് ശരല്കാലത്തെ ഗ്രീന്‍ലാന്റ് പോലെയുള്ളിടത്ത്,

Mars is still not very far.

അവിടെ ചൊവ്വ പോലെയാകാന്‍ അധിക സമയം വേണ്ട.

But that likelihood fades as long as ice melts again.

പക്ഷെ ഈ സാധ്യത മഞ്ഞുരുകുമ്പോള്‍ മാഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു.

And where water is liquid, it becomes a womb

ജലം ദ്രവരൂപത്തില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതൊരു ഗര്ഭാശയമാവുന്നു -

for cells green with chlorophyll -- and that molecular marvel

ക്ളോറോഫില്‍ കൊണ്ട് പച്ചയായ സെല്ലുകള്‍ക്ക്.

is what's made a difference -- it powers everything.

ആ തന്മാത്രാ വിസമയം ആണ് ഒരു മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയത്. ഒരു ചാലക ശക്തിയായിട്ട്.

The whole animal world today lives on a stockpile

ഇന്നത്തെ മുഴുവന്‍ ജന്തു ലോകവും ജീവിക്കുന്നത്

of bacterial oxygen that is cycled constantly

ചെടികളിലൂടെയും ആല്ഗകളിലൂടെയും തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി ചംക്രമണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ബാക്ടീരിയല്‍ ഒക്സിജനിലാണ്.

through plants and algae, and their waste is our breath,

അവ പുറന്തള്ളുന്നതാണ് നമ്മുടെ ശ്വാസം.

and vice versa.

അത് പോലെ തന്നെ തിരിച്ചും.

This Earth is alive, and it's made its own membrane.

ഈ ഭൂമി ജീവനുള്ളതാണ്, അതിന്റേതായ ഒരു മേംബ്രന്‍ ഉണ്ടതിന്.

We call it "atmosphere." This is the icon of our journey.

ഇതാണ് നമ്മുടെ യാത്രയുടെ പ്രതീകം.

And you all here today can imagine and will shape where we go next.
