I have felt a very deep connection to animals and to the ocean.

And I wanted to do something to help, but I always wondered:

And it would be 30 years,

but I would eventually get the answer to that question.

When these heartbreaking images of oiled birds

finally began to emerge from the Gulf of Mexico last year

during the horrific BP oil spill,

a German biologist by the name of Silvia Gaus was quoted as saying,

because studies have shown

And I could not disagree more.

In addition,

I believe that every oiled animal deserves a second chance at life.

And I want to tell you why I feel so strongly about this.

On June 23, 2000,

2000년 6월 23일

a ship named the Treasure sank off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa,

남아프리카 공화국의 케이프타운

spilling 1,300 tons of fuel,

which polluted the habitats of nearly half the entire world population

Now, the ship sank between Robben Island to the south,

and Dassen Island to the north --

two of the penguins' main breeding islands.

And exactly six years and three days earlier,

on June 20, 1994,

a ship named the Apollo Sea sank near Dassen Island,

oiling 10,000 penguins, half of which died.

Now when the Treasure sank in 2000,

it was the height of the best breeding season

scientists had ever recorded for the African penguin,

which at the time, was listed as a threatened species.

And soon, nearly 20,000 penguins

were covered with this toxic oil.

The local seabird rescue center, named SANCCOB,

SANCCOB이라는 그 지역의 바닷새 구조센터는

immediately launched a massive rescue operation,

and this soon would become the largest animal rescue ever undertaken.

At the time, I was working down the street.

그당시에 저는 그 근처에 있는

I was a penguin aquarist at the New England Aquarium.

And exactly 11 years ago yesterday,

the phone rang in the penguin office.

And with that call, my life would change forever.

It was Estelle van Der Merwe calling from SANCCOB,

saying, "Please come help.

전화가 왔는데 기름에 범벅이 된 수천마리의

We have thousands of oiled penguins

펭귄이 쎈터에 도착했는데 자원봉사를 하겠다는

and thousands of willing but completely inexperienced volunteers.

And we need penguin experts to come train and supervise them."

So two days later,

I was on a plane headed for Cape Town

다른 펭귄 전문가와 함께

with a team of penguin specialists.

케이프타운으로 가는 비행기에 올랐어요

And the scene inside of this building was devastating and surreal.

구조센 빌딩 안의 상황은

끔찍한 악몽같았지요

In fact, many people compared it to a war zone.

많은 사람들은 전쟁터 같다는 말을 했죠

Last week, a 10-year-old girl asked me:

바로 지난 주에 10살난 여자애 하나가 저한테 이렇게 묻더군요

"What did it feel like when you first walked into that building

"그 구조센터에 처음 도착해서

그렇게 수많은 펭귄들이 기름에

and saw so many oiled penguins?"

범벅이된 것을 봤을 때 어떤 기분을 느끼셨어요?"

And this is what happened.

저는 그 질문을 받는 순간

I was instantly transported back to that moment in time.

제 생각은 그 당시의 케이프타운

팽귄 구조센터로 날아갔어요

펭귄은 원래 말이 많고 매우

Penguins are very vocal birds and really, really noisy,

매우 시끄러운 바다새에요

그래서 저는 펭귄들이 지껄이고

so I expected to walk into this building

and be met with this cacophony of honking and braying and squawking.

깩깩거리는 소리로 온 빌딩이

진동할 줄 알았었는데

But instead,

우리가 문을 열고 안으로

when we stepped through those doors and into the building,

들어갔더니 으시시할 정도로

it was eerily silent.

실내가 조용했었어요

So it was very clear

그 펭귄들이 스트레스와

these were stressed, sick, traumatized birds.

병으로 고통을 받고 있다는게 분명했어요

또 무척 놀라웠던 것은 엄청난 수의 자원봉사자들이

The other thing that was so striking

was the sheer number of volunteers.

이미 와 있었다는 것이었어요

많을 때는 구조센터로 하루에 1,000명까지

Up to 1,000 people a day came to the rescue center.

몰려 왔었으니까요

총 구조작업 기간 동안

Eventually, over the course of this rescue,

more than 12-and-a-half thousand volunteers

이 펭귄들을 돕기위해 전세계로부터

came from all over the world to Cape Town,

케이프타운으로 1만2천5백명 이상의

사람들이 와서 일했어요

to help save these birds.

And the amazing thing was that not one of them had to be there.

그런데 놀라웠던 사실은

그 많은 사람들이 모두

자진해서 왔다는 것이죠

Yet they were.

So for the few of us that were there in a professional capacity,

그래서 직업적인 전문가로 그 곳에 갔던

this extraordinary volunteer response to this animal crisis

우리 일행은 일반인들의

이와같은 엄청난

was profoundly moving and awe-inspiring.

반응에 깊은 감명을 받았지요

So the day after we arrived,

저희가 도착한 다음날 저와 저의 수족관에서

two of us from the aquarium were put in charge of room two.

같이 온 동료 한명은 제2호실을 책임맡았었는데,

Room two had more than 4,000 oiled penguins in it.

그곳에는 기름 범벅이 된 펭귄이 4천마리가 넘게 있었어요

Now, mind you --

3일 전만해도 저희들은 불과

three days earlier, we had 60 penguins under our care,

60마리의 펭귄을 돌보고 있었는데요,

so we were definitely overwhelmed

제 동료는 어쨌는지 모르지만, 저는

당황도 했고 겁도 났었지요

and just a bit terrified -- at least I was.

저는 제 자신이 그렇게

Personally, I really didn't know

어려운 일을 감당할 능력이

if I was capable of handling such a monstrous task.

있을지 정말로 의심스러웠어요

또한, 저희들 일행이 과연 그렇게 엄청나게

And collectively,

we really didn't know if we could pull this off.

큰일을 제대로 해낼수 있을런지도 몰랐거든요

Because we all knew that just six years earlier,

왜냐면, 불과 6년전에 그 구조센터에서

우리가 돌봤던 펭귄수가 2호실에 있는

half as many penguins had been oiled and rescued,

펭귄의 반정도 밖에 안됐었는데도 결국에는 그것의

반정도만 살아 남았었다는 사실을 알고 있었기 때문이었어요

and only half of them had survived.

과연 우리가 이렇게 많은 펭귄들을

So would it be humanly possible to save this many oiled penguins?

구조한다는 것이 인간적으로 가능할까요?

우리는 그 답을 몰랐지요

We just did not know.

그러나 헌신적이고 용감한

But what gave us hope

이들 자원봉사자들이 저희들에 용기를 주었지요

were these incredibly dedicated and brave volunteers,

three of whom here are force-feeding penguins.

You may notice they're wearing very thick gloves.

아주 두꺼운 장갑을 끼고 강제로

And what you should know about African penguins

먹이를 먹이고 있는데 그 이유는 아프리카 펭귄의

is that they have razor-sharp beaks.

주둥이가 면도칼처럼 날카롭기 때문입니다

그래서 우리는 곧

And before long,

our bodies were covered head to toe

겁을 먹고 몸부림치는

펭귄으로 부터 머리 끝부터 발 끝까지

with these nasty wounds inflicted by the terrified penguins.

이렇게 상처를 받았지요

설상가상으로 저희들이 도착한 다음날에는

Now the day after we arrived, a new crisis began to unfold.

새로운 위기가 닥치기 시작했지요

The oil slick was now moving north towards Dassen Island,

그것은 오일 슬릭이 다센섬을 향해 이동하기

and the rescuers despaired,

시작한 것인데 만약에 오일이

because they knew if the oil hit,

그 섬에 도달하면 기름 뭍은 펭귄을

it would not be possible to rescue any more oiled birds.

더 이상 구제할 방법이 없다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문이죠

And there really were no good solutions.

좋은 해결책이 없었지요

But then finally,

그런데 연구자 한 명이

one of the researchers threw out this crazy idea.

기이한 아이디어를 내놨어요

He said, "OK, why don't we try and collect the birds

그는 "기름에 오염될 위험이 가장 많은

펭귄을 거둬 모으면 어떻겠냐?" 는 것이죠

at the greatest risk of getting oiled" --

그래서 2만 마리의 펭귄을 모았어요

they collected 20,000 --

그러고는 녀석들 전부를 지붕이 없는

"and we'll ship them 500 miles up the coast to Port Elizabeth

트럭에 실고 엘리자베스 항구로

in these open-air trucks,

운반해서 오염이 안된 바다에 풀어주고 지네들이

and release them into the clean waters there

알아서 집으로 찾아오게 하자는 것이었죠

and let them swim back home?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So three of those penguins -- Peter, Pamela and Percy --

그래서 우리는 피터, 파메라 그리고 퍼시라는

이름의 펭귄에게 위성추적 태그를 달았어요

wore satellite tags,

and the researchers crossed their fingers

저희들은 펭귄들이 서식지로

and hoped that by the time they got back home,

다시 돌아오기 전에 오일을

모두 닦아낼 수 있기를 진심으로 바랬죠

the oil would be cleaned up from their islands.

다행히도 펭귄들이 되돌아 왔을 때는

And luckily, the day they arrived, it was.

이미 청소작업이 끝난 상태였지요

So it had been a huge gamble, but it had paid off.

그것은 큰 도박이었지만 다행히도 만사가 무사했지요

만약에 기름 유출이

And so they know now that they can use this strategy

또 발생하면 또 다시 이런 방법을

in future oil spills.

사용할 수 있겠지요

So in wildlife rescue as in life,

우리의 삶에서도 그렇듯이

we learn from each previous experience,

야생동물의 구조작업에서도

and we learn from both our successes and our failures.

우리는 과거의 경험과 실패 및

성공으로부터 배웁니다

1994년 아폴로 씨의 기름유출에

And the main thing learned during the Apollo Sea rescue in '94

따른 구조작업에서 배운 가장 큰

was that most of those penguins had died due to the unwitting use

교훈은 기름이 뭍은 펭귄들을

of poorly ventilated transport boxes and trucks,

운송상자와 트럭에서

because they just had not been prepared

to deal with so many oiled penguins at once.

So in these six years between these two oil spills,

they've built thousands of these well-ventilated boxes.

And as a result, during the Treasure rescue,

just 160 penguins died during the transport process,

as opposed to 5,000.

So this alone was a huge victory.

Something else learned during the Apollo rescue

트레이닝 박스를 사용해서

was how to train the penguins

to take fish freely from their hands,

펭귄들이 물고기를 쉽게 받아먹을 수 있게

using these training boxes.

훈련시키는 방법을 알았다는 것이었지요

And we used this technique again during the Treasure rescue.

우리는 트레져 구조작업 시에도

이 방법을 사용했었죠

But an interesting thing was noted during the training process.

그런데 저희들은 펭귄에게 물고기

먹는 법을 가르켜 주다가 6년전 아폴로해

The first penguins to make that transition to free feeding

오염사고 때 구조받았다는 표시가 있는

금속 밴드가 붙혀있는 펭귄들은

were the ones that had a metal band on their wing

물고기를 받아먹는 방법을

from the Apollo Sea spill six years earlier.

더 먼저 배운다는 것을 알았죠

So penguins learn from previous experience, too.

즉, 펭귄들도 과거의 경험으로부터

배운다는 것이지요

펭귄에 뭍은 오일은 모두

So all of those penguins had to have the oil meticulously cleaned

완전히 철저하게 씻어내야 합니다

from their bodies.

펭귄 한 마리를 닦아내는데 두 사람이 최소한

It would take two people at least an hour just to clean one penguin.

한 시간은 일을 해야 해요

When you clean a penguin,

펭귄을 닦기 전에는 우선 펭귄을

you first have to spray it with a degreaser.

기름제거 스프레이를 뿌려줘야돼요

And this brings me to my favorite story from the Treasure rescue.

트레져 사건 당시에 있었던

제가 좋아하는 이야기를 하나 말씀드리지요

About a year prior to this oil spill,

그 오일 오염 사건이 터지기

일년전에 17살된 학생이

a 17-year-old student had invented a degreaser.

기름기 제거제를 발명했지요

And they'd been using it at SANCCOB with great success,

그런데 그것이 아주 성공적이어서 SANCCOB 센터는

so they began using it during the Treasure rescue.

트레져 사건 당시에도 그것을 사용했지요

But partway through, they ran out.

그런데 구조작업 도중에 기름기 제거제가

So in a panic, Estelle from SANCCOB called the student

다 떨어져서 SANCCOB에서 일하는 에스텔이

and said, "Please, you have to make more!"

그 학생을 긴급하게 불러서 빨리 그 제거제를

So he raced to the lab

더 만들어 달라고 전화로 요청했지요

and made enough to clean the rest of the birds.

그래서 그 학생이 실험실로 달려가서

So I just think it is the coolest thing

제거제를 더 만들어 줬는데, 덕분에

that a teenager invented a product

수 천마리의 펭귄이 살 수 있었어요.

한 학생의 발명품이 수 천마리의

that helped save the lives of thousands of animals.

펭귄을 구했으니

얼마나 멋있는 일입니까?

So what happened to those 20,000 oiled penguins?

그럼 기름이 묻었던 2만마리의 펭귄은 어떻게 됐을까요?

실비아 가우스의 말이 맞는 말일까요?

And was Silvia Gaus right?

기름이 묻은 바닷새들은

Should we routinely euthanize all oiled birds

아무래도 죽을테니까

because most of them are going to die anyway?

매번 모두 안락사 시켜는 것이 좋을까요?

Well, she could not be more wrong.

저는 절대로 그렇지 않다고 생각합니다

After half a million hours of grueling volunteer labor,

우리들은 자원봉사자들의

50만 시간에 걸친 힘든 노력의 결과로

more than 90 percent of those oiled penguins

기름이 뭍었던 펭귄들의 90% 이상을

were successfully returned to the wild.

성공적으로 야생으로 돌려보낼 수 있었습니다

And we know from follow-up studies

후속 연구는 그 펭귄들이 오염에

that they have lived just as long as never-oiled penguins,

노출되지 않았던 펭귄에 비교했을 때,

and bred nearly as successfully.

And in addition,

about 3,000 penguin chicks were rescued and hand raised.

And again, we know from long-term monitoring

that more of these hand-raised chicks survive to adulthood and breeding age

이것들이 부모 펭귄이 기른 펭귄새끼들 보다

than do parent-raised chicks.

Armed with this knowledge, SANCCOB has a chick-bolstering project,

and every year, they rescue and raise abandoned chicks,

and they have a very impressive, 80 percent success rate.

This is critically important,

바로 1년 전에 아프리카 펭귄이

because one year ago,

the African penguin was declared endangered.

And they could be extinct in less than 10 years

if we don't do something now to protect them.

So what did I learn

from this intense and unforgettable experience?

Personally, I learned that I am capable of handling so much more

제 개인적으로 보면, 저는 제가 꿈에도

생각하지 못했던 일을 해낼 수 있다는 것을 배웠어요

than I ever dreamed possible.

And I learned that one person can make a huge difference.

그리고 한 개인이 큰 차이를

만들 수 있다는 것을 배웠죠

Just look at that 17-year-old.

그 17살난 학생을 보세요.

And when we come together and work as one,

저희들이 힘을 합쳐서

하나로 일하면 우리는

we can achieve extraordinary things.

놀라운 일들을 할 수 있지요

자기 자신보다 훨씬 더 큰

And truly, to be a part of something so much larger than yourself

무엇의 일부가 되도록

일하는 것은 가장

is the most rewarding experience you can possibly have.

보람있는 경험이지요

So I'd like to leave you with one final thought

저는 여러분께 한가지의 생각과

하나의 도전을 남기고 싶네요.

and a challenge, if you will.

My mission as The Penguin Lady is to raise awareness and funding

펭귄 대변인으로서의 저의 임무는

펭귄을 보호하기 위해 대중 인식을

높이고 구조자금을 모으는 것이지만

to protect penguins.

여러분들은 왜 펭귄에 대해 관심을 가져야 할까요?

But why should any of you care about penguins?

Well, you should care because they're an indicator species.

그 이유는 펭귄이 지표종의

하나이기 때문입니다

And simply put: if penguins are dying, it means our oceans are dying.

즉, 펭귄이 죽는다는 말은

즉 바다가 죽는다는 말이고 그러면

And we ultimately will be affected,

우리도 결국은 영향을 받게되지요

because, as Sylvia Earle says,

왜냐면, 실비아 얼이 말했듯이

"The oceans are our life-support system."

"대양은 우리의 생명유지 시스템" 이니까요

And the two main threats to penguins today

펭귄의 생존을 위협하는 두 가지 요소는

are overfishing and global warming.

과잉어획과 지구온난화입니다

그런데 우리들 하나 하나는

And these are two things

that each one of us actually has the power to do something about.

이에 대해 실질적인 도움을

줄 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있지요

그래서, 우리 각자가

So if we each do our part, together, we can make a difference,

우리 몫을 하면 펭귄이 멸종되지 않게

and we can help keep penguins from going extinct.

도움을 줄 수 있습니다

Humans have always been the greatest threat to penguins,

인류는 항상 펭귄의 생존에 가장 큰 위협이었었지만,

지금은 그들의 유일한 희망입니다

but we are now their only hope.
