I'm Dr. David Hanson, and I build robots with character.

So we're starting with a variety of technologies

that have converged into these conversational character robots

that can see faces, make eye contact with you,

make a full range of facial expressions, understand speech

and begin to model how you're feeling

and who you are, and build a relationship with you.

I developed a series of technologies

저는 로봇이 전보다 더 자연스러운 표정을 만들 수 있는

that allowed the robots to make more realistic facial expressions

일련의 기술을 개발하였고,

than previously achieved, on lower power,

이 기술은 저전력으로도 직립보행이 가능한 로봇인

which enabled the walking biped robots, the first androids.

최초의 안드로이드를 가능하게 하였습니다.

So, it's a full range of facial expressions

사람 얼굴에 있는 주요 근육들을 시뮬레이션하여

simulating all the major muscles in the human face,

다양한 얼굴 표정을 만들 수 있는데,

running on very small batteries,

이것은 아주 작은 전지,

extremely lightweight.

초경량 전지로 구동됩니다.

The materials that allowed the battery-operated facial expressions

전지로 얼굴 표정을 작동할 수 있게 하는 물질은

is a material that we call Frubber,

'프러버'라 불리는 소재입니다.

and it actually has three major innovations

사실 이런 일을 가능하게 하는 그 물질에는

in the material that allow this to happen.

세가지 주요 혁신 기술이 있습니다.

One is hierarchical pores,

하나는 계층적 기공이고,

and the other is a macro-molecular nanoscale porosity in the material.

There he's starting to walk.

This is at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

저것은 KAIST에서 만든거죠.

I built the head. They built the body.

제가 머리를 만들었습니다. KAIST에서 몸통을 만들었고요.

So the goal here is to achieve sentience in machines,

여기서의 목표는 이 로봇이 지각력을 갖게 하는 것입니다.

and not just sentience, but empathy.

그뿐만 아니라 감정도 함께요.

We're working with the Machine Perception Laboratory

우리는 UC 샌디에고에 있는 '기계지각연구소'와

at the U.C. San Diego.

함께 연구하고 있습니다.

They have this really remarkable facial expression technology

이 연구소는 얼굴 표정을 인식하는

that recognizes facial expressions,

즉, 상대방이 어떤 표정을 짓는지를 인식하는

what facial expressions you're making.

매우 놀랄만한 표정 기술을 보유하고 있습니다.

It also recognizes where you're looking, your head orientation.

또한 상대방이 어디를 보는지, 머리의 방향도 인식합니다.

We're emulating all the major facial expressions,

and then controlling it with the software

that we call the Character Engine.

And here is a little bit of the technology that's involved in that.

So his perception of your emotional states

상대방의 감정 상태를 지각하는 능력은

is very important for machines to effectively become empathetic.

로봇이 감정을 가지는데 매우 중요한 요솝니다.

Machines are becoming devastatingly capable

로봇들은 '살인'과 같은 파괴적인

of things like killing. Right?

능력을 가지게 됩니다, 맞죠?

Those machines have no place for empathy.

그런 기계들은 감정이란게 없죠.

And there is billions of dollars being spent on that.

몇십억 달러의 돈이 그런 곳에 쓰이고 있죠.

Character robotics could plant the seed

캐릭터 로봇공학은 진짜 감정을 가진 로봇을

for robots that actually have empathy.

만들 '씨앗을 심는' 계기가 될수 있습니다.

So, if they achieve human level intelligence

그래서 그 로봇들이 사람 정도의 지능을 가지게 될 때,

or, quite possibly, greater than human levels of intelligence,

또는 사람보다 너 나은 지능을 가지게 될 때,

this could be the seeds of hope for our future.

그것이 우리 미래의 '희망'이 될수 있는 '씨앗'일수도 있죠.

So, we've made 20 robots in the last eight years, during the course of getting my Ph.D.

And then I started Hanson Robotics,

which has been developing these things for mass manufacturing.

This is one of our robots

이것이 'Wired NextFest'에 몇 년 전에 선보인

that we showed at Wired NextFest a couple of years ago.

저희가 만든 로봇 중 하나입니다.

And it sees multiple people in a scene,

이 녀석은 한 장면에서 여러 명의 사람을 보면

remembers where individual people are,

그 각자가 어디에 있는지 기억하고,

and looks from person to person, remembering people.

한 사람씩 기억하면서 살펴봅니다.

So, we're involving two things.

One, the perception of people,

and two, the natural interface,

두번째는 내츄럴 인터페이스,

the natural form of the interface,

즉, 자연스러운 형식의 인터페이스로

so that it's more intuitive for you to interact with the robot.

로봇과의 상호작용이 더 직관적입니다.

You start to believe that it's alive and aware.

So one of my favorite projects was bringing all this stuff together

which was the basis of the movie "Bladerunner."

In these stories, robots often think

이 이야기들에서는 로봇들은 자신들이 사람이라 생각하죠.

that they're human, and they sort of come to life.

뭐, 생명을 얻는 것과 비슷하기도 해요.

So we put his writings, letters,

his interviews, correspondences,

into a huge database of thousands of pages,

and then used some natural language processing

to allow you to actually have a conversation with him.

And it was kind of spooky, because he would say these things

And this is one of the most exciting projects that we're developing,

which is a little character that's a spokesbot

for friendly artificial intelligence, friendly machine intelligence.

And we're getting this mass-manufactured.

We specked it out to actually be doable

with a very, very low-cost bill of materials,

so that it can become a childhood companion for kids.

Interfacing with the Internet, it gets smarter over the years.

인터넷과 연결하여 매년 더 똑똑하게 만들죠.

As artificial intelligence evolves, so does his intelligence.

인공지능은 진화하고 있습니다. 이 녀석의 지능도 말입니다.
