The world makes you something that you're not,

I may be somewhat unique in this,

So when I became a fashion model,

I felt that I'd finally achieved the dream

that I'd always wanted since I was a young child.

그건 어린 시절부터 늘 꿈꿔왔던 꿈이었어요.

My outside self finally matched my inner truth,

my inner self.

For complicated reasons which I'll get to later,

when I look at this picture,

at that time I felt like, Geena, you've done it,

But this past October,

I realized that I'm only just beginning.

All of us are put in boxes by our family,

our moment in history,

even our own bodies.

Some people have the courage to break free,

not to accept the limitations imposed by

Those people are always the threat

In my case, for the last nine years,

some of my neighbors,

some of my friends, colleagues, even my agent,

친구들, 동료들, 심지어 제 에이전트에게까지

did not know about my history.

I think, in mystery, this is called the reveal.

Here is mine.

I was assigned boy at birth

based on the appearance of my genitalia.

I remember when I was five years old

다섯 살때 저는 필리핀에 있던

in the Philippines walking around our house,

집 주위를 걷고 있었어요.

I would always wear this t-shirt on my head.

전 머리에 항상 티셔츠를 걸치고 있었어요.

And my mom asked me,

엄마는 제게 물었죠.

"How come you always wear that t-shirt on your head?"

"왜 항상 머리에 티셔츠를 걸치는거니?"

I said, "Mom, this is my hair. I'm a girl."

전 말했어요. "엄마, 이건 제 머리예요. 전 소녀라구요."

I knew then how to self-identify.

그 때 저는 스스로 정체성을 나타내는 법을 알았던거죠.

Gender has always been considered a fact,

젠더 (성)는 늘 하나의 사실로

immutable,

불변하는 것으로 생각하지만,

but we now know it's actually more fluid,

실은 유동적이고 복잡하며

complex and mysterious.

설명하기 힘들다는 것을 우리 모두는 압니다.

Because of my success, I never had the courage

제가 거둔 성공 때문에

to share my story,

제 이야기를 솔직하게 할 용기를 내지 못했습니다.

not because I thought what I am is wrong,

제 존재가 옳지 않다고 여겨서가 아니라,

but because of how the world treats those of us

세상이 기존의 질서을 깨려는 사람들을

who wish to break free.

대하는 방식 때문이었죠.

Every day,

매일

I am so grateful because I am a woman.

제가 여자라는 사실에 깊이 감사했어요.

I have a mom and dad and family

어머니, 아버지, 그리고 가족들.

who accepted me for who I am.

모두가 지금의 제 모습으로 저를 받아주었죠.

Many are not so fortunate.

많은 사람들이 그렇게 운이 좋지는 않아요.

There's a long tradition in Asian culture

아시아 문화에서는 성별의 유동적인

that celebrates the fluid mystery of gender.

신비스러움을 기리는 오랜 전통이 있습니다.

There is a Buddhist goddess of compassion.

불교에는 관세음보살이 있고

There is a Hindu goddess, hijra goddess.

힌두에는 히즈라 (사회적 성) 라는 여신이 있습니다.

So when I was eight years old,

I was at a fiesta in the Philippines celebrating

저는 필리핀 축제에 참석해서

these mysteries.

I was in front of the stage,

and I remember, out comes this beautiful woman

right in front of me,

and I remember that moment something hit me:

That is the kind of woman I would like to be.

그녀는 제가 꼭 되고 싶은 존재였습니다.

So when I was 15 years old,

남자 옷을 입던 제가

still dressing as a boy,

열다섯이 되었을 때,

I met this woman named T.L.

T.L. 이라는 여성을 만났죠.

She is a transgender beauty pageant manager.

그녀는 트랜스젠더 미스 필리핀 매니저였어요.

That night she asked me,

그날 밤 T. L. 은 제게 물었습니다.

"How come you are not joining the beauty pageant?"

"왜 당신은 미스 필리핀에 나오지 않는거죠?"

She convinced me that if I joined

T. L. 은 제가 대회에 나간다면

that she would take care of the registration fee

자신이 등록비와 의상비를 책임지겠다며

and the garments,

저를 설득했죠.

and that night,

I won best in swimsuit

and best in long gown

and placed second runner up

among 40-plus candidates.

That moment changed my life.

All of a sudden, I was introduced

to the world of beauty pageants.

Not a lot of people could say that your first job

is a pageant queen for transgender women,

but I'll take it.

말하는 사람은 많지 않으나 저는 그렇게 합니다.

So from 15 to 17 years old, I joined

그래서 15세에서 17세까지

the most prestigious pageant

저는 가장 명망높은 대회에도 참석했고

to the pageant where it's at the back of the truck, literally,

말 그대로 트럭 뒤에서 열리는 대회에도 참석했으며

or sometimes it would be a pavement next to a rice field,

때로는 논 옆 도로에서 열리는 대회에도 참석했습니다.

and when it rains --

그리고 비가 올 때는 --

it rains a lot in the Philippines --

필리핀에는 비가 많이 옵니다. --

the organizers would have to move it

위원회는 개인 집에서

inside someone's house.

대회를 열었습니다.

I also experienced the goodness of strangers,

낯선 사람들은 제게 친절했는데,

especially when we would travel

특히 외곽 지역에 사는 사람들은

in remote provinces in the Philippines.

더욱 그러했습니다.

But most importantly, I met

하지만 가장 중요한 것은, 그 곳에서

some of my best friends in that community.

In 2001,

2001년

my mom, who had moved to San Francisco,

called me and told me that my green card petition came through,

that I could now move to the United States.

I resisted it.

미국으로 이주할 수 있다고요.

I told my mom, "Mom, I'm having fun.

I'm here with my friends,

"엄마, 난 친구들과 함께 즐거워요.

I love traveling, being a beauty pageant queen."

난 여행이 좋고, 미스 필리핀이 좋아요."

But then two weeks later she called me, she said,

2주 뒤에 엄마는 제게 다시 말했어요.

"Did you know that if you move to the United States

"미국으로 이민오면 네 이름과 성별 표시를

you could change your name and gender marker?"

바꿀 수 있다는 거 알고 있니?"

That was all I needed to hear.

그것은 제게 가장 필요한 것이었어요.

My mom also told me to put two E's

엄마는 제 이름에 E를 두개

in the spelling of my name.

넣으라고 말했죠.

She also came with me when I had my surgery

엄마는 제가 19살에 태국에서 수술을 받을 때

in Thailand at 19 years old.

함께 계셨어요.

It's interesting, in some of the most rural cities in Thailand,

they perform some of the most prestigious,

safe and sophisticated surgery.

가장 정교하게 수술을 한다는 것이.

At that time in the United States,

you needed to have surgery

before you could change your name and gender marker.

So in 2001, I moved to San Francisco,

and I remember looking at my California driver's license

with the name Geena

That was a powerful moment.

For some people,

but for me, that was my license to live,

to feel dignified.

All of a sudden, my fears were minimized.

순식간에 두려움은 사라졌습니다.

I felt that I could conquer my dream

꿈을 이룰 수 있을 것 같았고

and move to New York and be a model.

뉴욕에 가면 모델이 될 수 있다고 생각했죠.

Many are not so fortunate.

많은 사람들이 그렇게 운이 좋은 건 아니에요.

I think of this woman named Islan Nettles.

아일라 네틀스라는 이 여성은

She's from New York, she's a young woman

뉴욕 출신인데 자신의 진리를 따라 살고

who was courageously living her truth,

자신의 삶을 그저 그렇게 끝내길 원치않는

but hatred ended her life.

용기있는 젊은 여성이었어요.

For most of my community,

제가 속한 사회의 대부분에겐

this is the reality in which we live.

이것이 현실입니다.

Our suicide rate is nine times higher

저희의 자살률은 일반적 수준의

than that of the general population.

9배에 해당합니다.

Every November 20,

매년 11월 20일이면

we have a global vigil

우리는 성전환 추모일을 기념하기 위해

for Transgender Day of Remembrance.

국제적인 시위를 벌입니다.

I'm here at this stage

저는 여기 무대 위에 있습니다.

because it's a long history of people who fought

부당함에 저항해 싸웠던

and stood up for injustice.

This is Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.

Today, this very moment,

is my real coming out.

I'm wondering what you would say,

especially to parents,

수용하기 어려워하는 자신을 발견한 사람,

but in a more broad way, to friends,

주변 사람들이

to family, to anyone who finds themselves

즉 부모, 아니 좀 더 나아가 친구, 가족,

encountering a child or a person

혹 누구든지 간에

who is struggling with and uncomfortable with

그런 이들을 어떻게 도와주라고 말할 수 있을까요?

a gender that's being assigned them,

어떻게 착하고 남을 배려하고

what might you say

친절한

to the family members of that person

가족 구성원이 되도록

to help them become good and caring and kind

도우라고

family members to them?

말할 수 있을까요?

Geena Rocero: Sure. Well, first, really, I'm so blessed.

지나 로세로: 네, 먼저 저는 매우 복 받았습니다.

The support system, with my mom especially,

and my family, that in itself

저를 도와주었는데

is just so powerful.

I remember every time I would coach

young trans women, I would mentor them,

and sometimes when they would call me

and tell me that their parents can't accept it,

I would pick up that phone call and tell my mom,

And sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, so —

But it's just, gender identity

is in the core of our being, right?

우리의 존재에 가장 핵심이잖아요, 그렇죠?

I mean, we're all assigned gender at birth,

제 말은, 우리는 모두 나면서 성별을 갖고 태어나요.

so what I'm trying to do

그래서 제가 대화를 하고 싶은 것은 이런 겁니다.

is to have this conversation that

태어나면서 부여된 성별이

sometimes that gender assignment doesn't match,

내면의 성별과 일치하지 않을 수 있으니

and there should be a space

사람들이 자신의 정체성을 선택하도록 하는

that would allow people to self-identify,

대화의 장이 있어야 해요.

and that's a conversation that we should have

그리고 그 대화가 바로

with parents, with colleagues.

우리가 우리의 부모와 친구들과 해야 할 대화입니다.

The transgender movement,

동성대자를 위한 운동이 시작된 과정과 비교해 볼 때,

it's at the very beginning,

성전환자를 위한 운동은

to compare to how the gay movement started.

이제 겨우 시작일 뿐이에요.

There's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

아직 해야 할 일이 많습니다.

There should be an understanding.

이해가 필요해요.

There should be a space of curiosity

호기심을 표현하고 질문이 오가는

and asking questions,

장이 필요해요.

and I hope all of you guys will be my allies.
