On Mondays and Thursdays, I learn how to die.

I call them my terminal days.

My wife Fernanda doesn't like the term,

but a lot of people in my family died of melanoma cancer

And I kept thinking, one day I could be sitting in front of a doctor

who looks at my exams and says,

"Ricardo, things don't look very good.

You have six months or a year to live."

And you start thinking about what you would do with this time.

여러분은 이 시간으로 뭘 할지 생각하실 겁니다.

And you say, "I'm going to spend more time with the kids.

여러분은, "난 아이들과 더 많은 시간을 보낼거야. 여러 곳을 다녀 봐야겠어.

I'm going to visit these places,

산에도 가고 명소들을 방문하고,

I'm going to go up and down mountains and places

and I'm going to do all the things I didn't do when I had the time."

시간이 있어도 못했던 것들을 다 해봐야 겠어." 하고 생각하시겠죠.

But of course, we all know

하지만 우리 모두 이런 게 매우 좋지만 괴로운 기억들이 된다는 걸 압니다.

these are very bittersweet memories we're going to have.

It's very difficult to do.

매우 힘든 일입니다. 아마 많은 시간을 울면서 보내겠죠.

You spend a good part of the time crying, probably.

So I said, I'm going to do something else.

그래서 저는 뭔가 하기로 했습니다.

Every Monday and Thursday, I'm going use my terminal days.

매주 월요일과 목요일을 마지막 날로 쓰는 겁니다.

And I will do, during those days,

그렇게 그 날에는,

whatever it is I was going to do if I had received that piece of news.

삶이 얼마 남지 않았을 때 해 보려고 했던 걸 다 할 겁니다.

(Laughter)

When you think about --

생각해 보시면--

when you think about the opposite of work,

일의 반대 개념을 생각하면 보통은 여가를 떠올립니다.

we, many times, think it's leisure.

And you say, ah, I need some leisure time, and so forth.

"난, 여가 시간 같은 게 필요해." 라고 말하죠.

But the fact is that, leisure is a very busy thing.

그런데 사실 여가는 매우 바쁜 겁니다.

You go play golf and tennis, and you meet people,

골프치고 테니스치고 사람들 만나고 점심 먹고 영화 시간에 늦죠.

and you're going for lunch, and you're late for the movies.

It's a very crowded thing that we do.

매우 일정이 꽉 차 있죠.

The opposite of work is idleness.

일하는 것의 반대는 빈둥거리기입니다.

But very few of us know what to do with idleness.

우리 대부분은 빈둥거릴 때 뭘 할지 모르죠.

When you look at the way that we distribute our lives in general,

일반적으로 삶의 시간이 할당된 것을 보면

돈이 많을 때도 있고, 시간이 없을 때도 있죠.

you realize that in the periods in which we have a lot of money,

we have very little time.

And then when we finally have time, we have neither the money nor the health.

그런데 마침내 시간이 있게 되면 돈이나 건강이 없게 됩니다.

So we started thinking about that as a company for the last 30 years.

지난 30년간의 회사처럼 생각해 봤습니다.

This is a complicated company with thousands of employees,

hundreds of millions of dollars of business

that makes rocket fuel propellent systems, runs 4,000 ATMs in Brazil,

4천개의 ATM을 브라질에서 운영하고

does income tax preparation for dozens of thousands.

수 만명의 소득세 신고를 준비해 주는 복잡한 회사입니다.

So this is not a simple business.

단순한 사업은 아닙니다.

그걸 보고 우리가 말했죠,

We looked at it and we said,

let's devolve to these people, let's give these people a company

"이 사람들에게 회사를 돌려줍시다.

where we take away all the boarding school aspects

기숙사학교 같은 요소들인 복장규정, 회의규정, 언어규정,

of, this is when you arrive, this is how you dress,

this is how you go to meetings, this is what you say,

this is what you don't say,

이런 것들을 빼고 뭐가 남는지 보자구요.

and let's see what's left.

So we started this about 30 years ago,

저희는 이것을 30년전에 시작했고,

and we started dealing with this very issue.

바로 이런 문제를 다루기 시작해서,

And so we said, look, the retirement,

"일생의 시간을 어떻게 분배할 지를 은퇴에 적용해서 살펴보자"라고 했죠.

the whole issue of how we distribute our graph of life.

Instead of going mountain climbing when you're 82,

82세에 산악자전거를 타지 말고, 다음 주에 바로 하는게 어떨까요?

why don't you do it next week?

And we'll do it like this,

여러분의 월급10%를 받고 수요일을 다시 되파는 이런 식인 것이죠.

we'll sell you back your Wednesdays for 10 percent of your salary.

So now, if you were going to be a violinist, which you probably weren't,

만약 여러분이 바이올린 연주가가 될 거라면 수요일에 하는 겁니다.

you go and do this on Wednesday.

And what we found --

저희 생각에는 연로하신 분들이

we thought, these are the older people

who are going to be really interested in this program.

이 프로그램에 흥미를 가질거라고 생각했습니다.

그런데 이것을 선택한 평균 연령이 29세였습니다.

And the average age of the first people who adhered

were 29, of course.

And so we started looking,

그래서 저희는 다른 방식으로 해 봐야겠다고 생각했습니다.

and we said, we have to do things in a different way.

So we started saying things like,

why do we want to know what time you came to work,

'어째서 몇 시에 출근을 했는지 퇴근을 했는지 알아야 할까?'

what time you left, etc.?

이것을 계약조건으로 사람들에게서 어떤 종류의 일을 구매할 수는 없을까?

Can't we exchange this for a contract

for buying something from you, some kind of work?

왜 이런 본사 건물을 지어야 하지?

Why are we building these headquarters?

Is it not an ego issue that we want to look solid

이건 그저 그럴듯 하고, 거창하게 보이려는 자존심이 아닌가?

and big and important?

But we're dragging you two hours across town because of it?

이것 때문에 두 시간이나 출퇴근을 시킨단 말인가?

So we started asking questions one by one.

그래서 하나씩 질문하기 시작했어요.

We'd say it like this:

예를 들어 첫번째는, '직원들을 어떻게 모집할까?'였죠.

One: How do we find people?

We'd go out and try and recruit people and we'd say,

현장 채용을 하는데, 우리가 한 말은, "우리한테 오시면, 우리가 두 세번쯤

look, when you come to us,

we're not going to have two or three interviews

면접을 해 본 후, 평생 우리 직장에서 일하세요 라고는 하지 않겠어요.

and then you're going to be married to us for life.

That's not how we do the rest of our lives.

우리는 평생을 그렇게 살지는 않죠. 그러니까 와서 면접을 보세요.

So, come have your interviews.

Anyone who's interested in interviewing, you will show up.

면접에 관심이 있으면 오시면 되죠.

And then we'll see what happens out of the intuition that rises from that,

그런 다음 이런 직관적 생각으로 어떤 일이 일어나는지 보는거죠

instead of just filling out the little items of whether you're the right person.

여러분이 맞는 사람인지 아닌지 표를 채워서 알아 보는게 아녜요.

And then, come back.

Spend an afternoon, spend a whole day, talk to anybody you want.

오후를 보내고, 하루를 지내보고 누구든 이야기를 해보세요.

Make sure we are the bride you thought we were

우리가 당신이 생각했던 맞는 짝인지

and not all the bullshit we put into our own ads.

우리 광고가 헛소리가 아닌지 확실히 알아보세요."라고 말했죠.

Slowly we went to a process where we'd say things like,

점차 우리가 생각했던 그런 모습으로 진행됐습니다.

we don't want anyone to be a leader in the company

어느 누구도 회사에서 미래의 사원들에게

if they haven't been interviewed and approved

면접이나 승인을 받지 않은 사람은 회사의 상사가 될 수 없어요.

by their future subordinates.

6개월마다 모두 익명으로 상사로서의 평가를 받습니다.

Every six months, everyone gets evaluated, anonymously, as a leader.

And this determines whether they should continue in that leadership position,

이것으로 관리자 직책을 계속 할 수 있는지 결정합니다.

which is many times situational, as you know.

아시는 것처럼 상황에 따라 좀 많이 다릅니다.

And so if they don't have 70, 80 percent of a grade, they don't stay,

70 - 80%의 평가점수를 못 받으면 계속 있을 수 없습니다.

which is probably the reason why I haven't been CEO for more than 10 years.

그래서 제가 지난 10년 넘게 CEO가 되지 못했나 봅니다.

And over time, we started asking other questions.

We said things like,

why can't people set their own salaries?

What do they need to know?

There's only three things you need to know:

how much people make inside the company,

사람들이 회사에서 얼마나 버는지,

how much people make somewhere else in a similar business

다른 유사업종에서 사람들이 얼마나 버는지와

and how much we make in general to see whether we can afford it.

벌 수 있다면 대체로 얼마를 버는지입니다.

So let's give people these three pieces of information.

사람들에게 이 세가지 정보를 주는 겁니다.

So we started having, in the cafeteria,

식당에 컴퓨터를 두어서 사람들이 검색을 해보게 했습니다.

a computer where you could go in and you could ask

what someone spent, how much someone makes,

누가 얼마를 쓰고, 얼마를 버는지,

what they make in benefits, what the company makes,

급여로 얼마를 받고 회사는 무엇을 하는지,

what the margins are, and so forth.

이윤은 얼마인지 등등입니다.

And this is 25 years ago.

이렇게 한 것은 25년전이었어요.

As this information started coming to people,

이 정보가 사람들에게 알려졌고

we said things like, we don't want to see your expense report,

사람들에게는 지출보고서를 알고 싶은게 아니고

we don't want to know how many holidays you're taking,

휴가를 얼마나 썼는지 알려는게 아니고

we don't want to know where you work.

어디서 일하는지 알려는게 아니라고 말했습니다.

We had, at one point, 14 different offices around town,

한 때는 마을에 14개의 다른 사무실이 있어서

and we'd say, go to the one that's closest to your house,

집이나 고객이 있는 곳에서 가장 가까운 곳에 가서 일하라고 했습니다.

to the customer that you're going to visit today.

Don't tell us where you are.

어디에 있는지 보고하지 말라고 했죠.

And more, even when we had thousands of people, 5,000 people,

심지어 수천명, 오천명이 근무해도 인력자원 부서에는 두 명이 있었죠.

we had two people in the H.R. department,

and thankfully one of them has retired.

고맙게도 한 명이 퇴직을 했어요.

(Laughter)

And so, the question we were asking was, how can we be taking care of people?

우리가 질문하는 것은, '사람들을 어떻게 관리할까' 였죠.

People are the only thing we have.

'우리에겐 사람들 밖에 없는데 사람들을 관리하고 돌보는 부서를 가질 순 없지.'

We can't have a department that runs after people and looks after people.

So as we started finding that this worked, and we'd say, we're looking for --

이것이 효과가 있다는 것을 알았고 우리가 찾고 있었던 것은,

and this is, I think, the main thing I was looking for

이게 내가 마지막 날에 찾고 있었고 회사에서 찾던 것이라고 여겼던,

in the terminal days and in the company,

which is, how do you set up for wisdom?

그것은, 지혜를 어떻게 갖추느냐는 겁니다.

We've come from an age of revolution, industrial revolution,

우리는 혁명의 시대를 거쳤습니다.

산업 혁명, 정보 시대, 지식의 시대,

an age of information, an age of knowledge,

but we're not any closer to the age of wisdom.

그러나 지혜의 시대에는 다다르지 않았습니다.

How we design, how do we organize, for more wisdom?

더한 지혜를 어떻게 고안하고 조직할까요?

So for example, many times,

예를 들어, 가장 똑똑하고 지적인 결정은 흥청망청 하지 않습니다.

what's the smartest or the intelligent decision doesn't jive.

So we'd say things like,

자, 여러분이 매주 57개의 장비 판매에 동의 했다고 합시다.

let's agree that you're going to sell 57 widgets per week.

If you sell them by Wednesday, please go to the beach.

수요일까지 다 팔았다면 해변으로 놀러 가세요.

Don't create a problem for us, for manufacturing, for application,

저희에게 문제를 일으키지 마세요.

그럼 새 회사를 사야 되고, 경쟁자를 매입해야 합니다.

then we have to buy new companies, we have to buy our competitors,

장비를 너무 많이 팔아서 이런 일들을 해야 한다고요.

we have to do all kinds of things because you sold too many widgets.

그러니 해변에 가서 놀다가 월요일에 다시 시작합시다.

So go to the beach and start again on Monday.

(Laughter) (Applause)

So the process is looking for wisdom.

지혜를 찾는 과정인 겁니다.

And in the process, of course, we wanted people to know everything,

그 과정에서 물론 사람들이 모두 알기를 바랬죠.

and we wanted to be truly democratic about the way we ran things.

우리가 운영하는 것에 민주적이기를 바랬습니다.

So our board had two seats open with the same voting rights,

그래서 우리 이사회는 동일 투표권 두 자리를 비웠습니다.

선착순으로 나오는 사람 둘을 위해서요.

for the first two people who showed up.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And so we had cleaning ladies voting on a board meeting,

청소하는 아줌마들을 이사회에서 투표하게 했는데

which had a lot of other very important people in suits and ties.

양복을 입은 다른 중요한 사람들과 함께 투표하게 했어요.

And the fact is that they kept us honest.

사실, 그 분들 덕분에 우리가 계속 정직하게 해 주었어요.

This process, as we started looking at the people who came to us,

we'd say, now wait a second,

people come to us and they say, where am I supposed to sit?

How am I supposed to work? Where am I going to be in 5 years' time?

And we looked at that and we said, we have to start much earlier.

그걸 보면서 저희가 좀더 일찍 시작해야 겠다고 말했습니다.

어디서 시작을 해야 할까? 유치원이 좋겠다고 생각했습니다.

Where do we start?

We said, oh, kindergarten seems like a good place.

So we set up a foundation, which now has, for 11 years, three schools,

그래서 재단을 세웠고 11년간 세 개의 학교에서 같은 질문을 했어요.

where we started asking the same questions,

how do you redesign school for wisdom?

지혜로운 학교를 어떻게 재설계를 해야 할까?

It is one thing to say, we need to recycle the teachers,

한 가지는 분명한 게 교사를 재활용해야 하고

we need the directors to do more.

일을 더 많이 하는 관리자가 있어야 합니다.

But the fact is that what we do with education is entirely obsolete.

교육에서 하는 일은 정말 시대에 뒤떨어져 있습니다.

The teacher's role is entirely obsolete.

교사의 역할이 완전히 구식입니다.

Going from a math class, to biology, to 14th-century France is very silly.

수학시간부터 생물시간까지, 14세기 프랑스까지 정말 바보스럽죠.

학교는 어떤 모습이면 좋을까 생각해 봤습니다.

So we started thinking, what could it look like?

And we put together people, including people who like education,

교육을 좋아하는 파울로 프레리 같은 사람과

people like Paulo Freire, and two ministers of education in Brazil

두 명의 브라질 교육부 장관을 섭외하기 시작했습니다.

and we said, if we were to design a school from scratch,

완전히 처음부터 학교를 다시 설계한다면 어떤 모습일까? 라고 물어보았죠.

what would it look like?

And so we created this school, which is called Lumiar,

루미아라는 학교를 만들었습니다. 그 중 하나는 공립학교입니다.

and Lumiar, one of them is a public school,

and Lumiar says the following:

루미아는 다음과 같습니다. 교사의 역할을 둘로 나눕니다.

Let's divide this role of the teacher into two.

One guy, we'll call a tutor.

한 사람은 개인교사입니다.

A tutor, in the old sense of the Greek "paideia": Look after the kid.

개인교사는 고대 그리스어로 "파이데이아"로

집에서 그리고 삶을 통해 어린이를 돌보는 겁니다.

What's happening at home, what's their moment in life, etc..

하지만 가르치지는 마십시요.

But please don't teach,

because the little you know compared to Google, we don't want to know.

구글보다 아는게 별로 없으시단 걸 저희는 알고 싶지 않으니까요.

Keep that to yourself.

그냥 본인만 알고 계세요. (웃음)

(Laughter)

열정과 전문성 두 가지가 있는 사람들을 데리고 올겁니다.

Now, we'll bring in people who have two things:

passion and expertise, and it could be their profession or not.

지업일 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있죠.

And we use the senior citizens,

저희는 고령시민을 쓰는데

who are 25 percent of the population with wisdom that nobody wants anymore.

누구도 이젠 원치 않는 지혜를 가진 인구의 25%에 해당되는 분들입니다.

So we bring them to school and we say,

그 분들을 학교로 모시고 와서 말씀 드리길,

teach these kids whatever you really believe in.

"여러분이 믿고 계시는 것은 뭐든지 아이들에게 가르쳐 주세요."

So we have violinists teaching math.

그래서 바이올린 연주자가 수학을 가르칩니다.

We have all kinds of things where we say,

온갖 종류의 것들이 다 있어서, 우리가 말하길,

don't worry about the course material anymore.

"수업 자료에 대해서는 걱정하지 마세요."

We have approximately 10 great threads that go from 2 to 17.

대략 2단계에서 17단계에 이르는 10학년의 학습단계가 있습니다.

Things like, how do we measure ourselves as humans?

우리는 인간으로서 어떻게 우리를 측정을 할까 같은 것이죠.

So there's a place for math and physics and all that there.

그래서 수학과 물리학 모든 것이 있습니다.

How do we express ourselves?

어떻게 우리 자신을 표현할까?

So there's a place for music and literature, etc.,

그래서 음악과 문학 등이 있고, 문법도 있죠.

but also for grammar.

삶에서 어쩌면 가장 중요하지만 사람들이 잊고 있는 것도 있죠.

And then we have things that everyone has forgotten,

which are probably the most important things in life.

The very important things in life, we know nothing about.

우리가 전혀 모르는, 인생에서 매우 중요한 것이죠.

We know nothing about love,

사랑에 대해서 아는게 없습니다.

we know nothing about death,

죽음에 대해서 아는 것이 없고 우리 삶의 이유를 알지 못합니다.

we know nothing about why we're here.

So we need a thread in school that talks about everything we don't know.

우리가 모르는 것에 대해 이야기 할 주제가 필요합니다.

So that's a big part of what we do.

그것이 우리가 하는 일의 중요한 부분입니다.

(Applause)

So over the years, we started going into other things.

수 년동안 다른 일로도 넘어가기 시작했어요.

We'd say, why do we have to scold the kids

가령, 왜 아이들을 혼내야 할까? 앉아라, 이리와서 이거 해라 등이요.

and say, sit down and come here and do that, and so forth.

We said, let's get the kids to do something we call a circle,

일주일에 한번씩 만나 써클이라는 모임을 아이들과 갖자고 했어요.

which meets once a week.

And we'd say, you put the rules together

거기서 규칙을 함께 만들고 무엇을 하고 싶은지 아이들이 정하는 겁니다.

and then you decide what you want to do with it.

So can you all hit yourself on the head?

그럼 자기 머리를 때려도 되나요? 물론, 일 주일동안 해보라고 합니다.

Sure, for a week, try.

They came up with the very same rules that we had,

(웃음)

우리가 가진 바로 그 규칙들을 생각해 냅니다.

except they're theirs.

그것들이 자신들의 규칙이라는 것만 빼고요.

And then, they have the power,

그럼 그들은 힘을 갖는데

which means, they can and do suspend and expel kids

아이들을 정학시키거나 퇴학시킬 수도 있습니다.

so that we're not playing school, they really decide.

학교 놀이를 하는게 아니라 정말로 그들이 결정합니다.

And then, in this same vein,

그리고 나서 같은 원리로 디지털 모자이크를 만듭니다.

we keep a digital mosaic,

because this is not constructivist or Montessori or something.

왜냐하면 구성주의자나 몬테소리 같은 게 아니니까요.

It's something where we keep the Brazilian curriculum

with 600 tiles of a mosaic,

which we want to expose these kids to by the time they're 17.

저희는 아이들이 17세까지 그것을 경험하길 바랍니다.

And follow this all the time and we know how they're doing

and we say, you're not interested in this now, let's wait a year.

And the kids are in groups that don't have an age category,

so the six-year-old kid who is ready for that with an 11-year-old,

that eliminates all of the gangs and the groups

and this stuff that we have in the schools, in general.

And they have a zero to 100 percent grading,

which they do themselves with an app every couple of hours.

Until we know they're 37 percent of the way we'd like them to be on this issue,

so that we can send them out in the world with them knowing enough about it.

And so the courses are World Cup Soccer, or building a bicycle.

And people will sign up for a 45-day course on building a bicycle.

Now, try to build a bicycle without knowing that pi is 3.1416.

자전거 만들 때 파이값이 3.1416을 모른채 만들어 보세요.

You can't.

만들 수 없습니다.

And try, any one of you, using 3.1416 for something.

파이값을 어딘가 이용해 보세요. 더 이상은 모릅니다.

You don't know anymore.

So this is lost and that's what we try to do there,

그래서 이런것을 잃기 때문에 학교에서 지혜를 찾는 것이죠.

which is looking for wisdom in that school.

And that brings us back to this graph and this distribution of our life.

이 그래프와 삶의 배분으로 다시 되돌아 오게 하죠.

생각해 보면, 저는 돈을 많이 모았습니다.

I accumulated a lot of money when I think about it.

When you think and you say, now is the time to give back --

이제 되돌려 줘야 할 때라고 생각하면, 만일 되돌려 주는 거라면,

well, if you're giving back, you took too much.

그건 너무 많이 가져간 거예요.

I keep thinking of Warren Buffet waking up one day

저는 계속해서, 워렌 버핏이 어느 날 자고 일어나

and finding out he has 30 billion dollars more than he thought he had.

생각보다 300억 달러가 더 많다는 걸 발견했다고 생각해 봅니다.

And he looks and he says, what am I going to do with this?

그가 이걸 갖고 뭘 할까 생각하다가, "이게 정말 필요한 사람에게 줘야지.

And he says, I'll give it to someone who really needs this.

빌 게이츠에게 줘야겠군.

I'll give it to Bill Gates. (Laughter)

And my guy, who's my financial advisor in New York,

뉴욕의 제 재정 담당이 말하길, "당신 바보 같은 사람이군요.

he says, look, you're a silly guy

because you would have 4.1 times more money today

나누지 않고 돈으로 돈을 만들면 지금보다 4.1배는

if you had made money with money instead of sharing as you go.

더 돈을 만들수 있다구요. 하지만 전, 나눠 갖는게 더 좋아요.

But I like sharing as you go better.

I taught MBAs at MIT for a time

한동안 MIT에서 MBA과정을 가르쳤습니다.

and I ended up, one day, at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.

어느 날 캠브리지의 아름다운 마운트 오번 묘지에서 멈추었죠.

It is a beautiful cemetery in Cambridge.

And I was walking around. It was my birthday and I was thinking.

제 생일에 산책하면서 생각했죠,

And the first time around, I saw these tombstones

처음으로 거닐면서 비석들과 훌륭한 일을 한 이 사람들을 보며

and these wonderful people who'd done great things

and I thought, what do I want to be remembered for?

난 무엇으로 기억이 될까하고 생각했습니다.

And I did another stroll around,

한번 더 주변을 산책했고 두 번째로 거닐었을 때,

and the second time, another question came to me,

다른 질문이 떠올랐는데 제게는 더 나은 질문이었는데,

which did me better, which was,

어째서 내가 기억되길 바라는거지?

why do I want to be remembered at all?

And that, I think, took me different places.

그것은 다른 생각으로 저를 이끌었죠.

제가 50세에 아내 페르난다와 오후 내내 앉아서

When I was 50, my wife Fernanda and I sat for a whole afternoon,

we had a big pit with fire,

and I threw everything I had ever done into that fire.

38개국어로 된 책과

This is a book in 38 languages,

hundreds and hundreds of articles and DVDs, everything there was.

수 백개의 기사들과 DVD, 제가 한 모든 게 있었습니다.

And that did two things.

그렇게 한 것은 두 가지 결과를 낳았죠.

One, it freed our five kids from following in our steps, our shadow --

하나는 제 애들 다섯명이 제 여정을 따르지 않아도 되게 풀어 주었죠.

They don't know what I do.

제가 무슨 일을 하는지 그애들이 모르니까요.

(Laughter)

Which is good.

그건 좋은 일이죠. (웃음)

And I'm not going to take them somewhere

그것을 가져다 아이들에게 주며 말하길, "언젠가 이게 다 너희들 게 될거야."

and say, one day all of this will be yours.

라고 하지 않을 것 입니다.

The five kids know nothing, which is good.

제 다섯 아이들은 아무것도 모르는데, 그건 좋은 거죠.

And the second thing is,

두 번째는

I freed myself from this anchor of past achievement or whatever.

제 자신이 지난 영광인지 뭔지에 얽매이지 않고 자유롭게 되었죠.

I'm free to start something new every time and to decide things from scratch

매번 새로운 것을 시작하고 생애 마지막 날의 일환으로

in part of those terminal days.

완전히 처음부터 시작할 수 있게 됐습니다.

And some people would say,

어떤 사람은 말하겠죠,

oh, so now you have this time, these terminal days,

"그러니까 인생의 마지막 날이 됐으니 가서 뭐든지 하겠네요."

and so you go out and do everything.

No, we've been to the beaches,

아녜요. 우리는 해변에 갔었죠. 사모아, 몰디브, 모잠비크에 갔죠.

so we've been to Samoa and Maldives and Mozambique,

so that's done.

다 했습니다.

I've climbed mountains in the Himalayas.

히말라야도 등반했습니다.

I've gone down 60 meters to see hammerhead sharks.

가래머리 상어를 보러 60미터 잠수도 했습니다.

I've spent 59 days on the back of a camel from Chad to Timbuktu.

챠드에서 팀북투까지 낙타를 타고 59일을 갔어요.

I've gone to the magnetic North Pole on a dog sled.

개썰매를 타고 자북극점에도 갔어요.

So, we've been busy.

우리는 매우 바빴죠.

It's what I'd like to call my empty bucket list.

And with this rationale, I look at these days and I think,

I'm not retired. I don't feel retired at all.

And so I'm writing a new book.

We started three new companies in the last two years.

I'm now working on getting this school system for free out into the world,

and I've found, very interestingly enough, that nobody wants it for free.

And so I've been trying for 10 years

to get the public system to take over this school rationale,

much as the public schools we have,

which has instead of 43 out of 100, as their rating, as their grades,

100점 중 43점을 받은 학교가 100점 중 91점을 받았습니다.

has 91 out of 100.

But for free, nobody wants it.

공짜로는 아무도 원치 않습니다.

So maybe we'll start charging for it and then it will go somewhere.

비용을 받기 시작하면 잘 될 것 같아요.

But getting this out is one of the things we want to do.

하지만 이것을 세계에 내 보이는 게 저희 바람입니다.

And I think what this leaves us as a message for all of you,

이것이 우리에게 주는 시사점은 이렇다고 봅니다.

I think is a little bit like this:

We've all learned how to go on Sunday night

우리는 일요일 밤에 이메일을 보내고

to email and work from home.

재택근무를 하는 방법은 배웠지만

But very few of us have learned

월요일 오후에 영화보러 가는 법은 배워보지 않았어요.

how to go to the movies on Monday afternoon.

And if we're looking for wisdom, we need to learn to do that as well.

만약 우리가 지혜를 구한다면 그것도 배워야 합니다.

And so, what we've done all of these years is very simple,

저희가 지금까지 한 일을 매우 단순합니다.

is use the little tool, which is ask three whys in a row.

도구를 되도록 안쓰고 "왜"라는 세 가지 질문을 한번에 하는 겁니다.

Because the first why you always have a good answer for.

첫번째 왜는 늘 대답이 나옵니다.

The second why, it starts getting difficult.

두번째 왜는 어려워지죠.

By the third why, you don't really know why you're doing what you're doing.

세번째 왜는 여러분이 하고 있는 일을 왜 하고 있는지 정말 모릅니다.

What I want to leave you with is the seed and the thought that maybe if you do this,

여러분께 말씀드리고 싶은 생각은

이렇게 하시면 이런 질문에 도달하게 되는 것니다.

you will come to the question, what for?

무엇 때문이지? 내가 뭣 때문에 이걸 하는 거지?

What am I doing this for?

And hopefully, as a result of that, and over time,

you'll have a much wiser future.

And yet so deeply wise, also.

The pieces I'm trying to put together are this:

Your ideas are so radical.

How, in business, for example, these ideas have been out for a while,

probably the percentage of businesses that have taken some of them

아마 그런 생각을 채택한 회사의 수는 아직은 적을 것 같아요, 그렇죠?

is still quite low.

Are there any times you've seen some big company

take on one of your ideas and you've gone, "Yes!"?

Ricardo Semler: It happens. It happened about two weeks ago

with Richard Branson, with his people saying,

oh, I don't want to control your holidays anymore,

여러분의 휴가를 더이상 통제하고 싶지 않다고 하거나

or Netflix does a little bit of this and that,

또는 넷플릭스가 이것 저것 했죠. 그러나 이게 중요하다고 보진 않아요.

but I don't think it's very important.

I'd like to see it happen maybe a little bit in a bit of a missionary zeal,

but that's a very personal one.

But the fact is that it takes a leap of faith about losing control.

사실상, 통제를 포기하려면 상당한 신념이 필요합니다.

And almost nobody who is in control is ready to take leaps of faith.

It will have to come from kids and other people

who are starting companies in a different way.

CA: So that's the key thing?

From your point of view the evidence is there,

in the business point of view this works,

but people just don't have the courage to -- (Whoosh)

RS: They don't even have the incentive.

You're running a company with a 90-day mandate.

90일 의무가 있는 회사를 운영한다면 분기 보고서가 있죠.

It's a quarterly report.

If you're not good in 90 days, you're out.

90일동안 실적이 좋지 않으면 쫓겨 나지요.

So you say, "Here's a great program that, in less than one generation --"

"여기 한 세대만에 뭔가 생길 좋은 프로그램이 있어요." 이러면

And the guy says, "Get out of here."

바로 "당장 나가." 하겠죠. 이게 문제입니다.

So this is the problem.

(Laughter)

CA: What you're trying to do in education seems to me incredibly profound.

크리스: 교육에서 하시는 일이 제게는 매우 심오하게 보이는데요.

Everyone is bothered about their country's education system.

모두가 각 나라의 교육 체계때문에 골치입니다.

No one thinks that we've caught up yet to a world

아무도 구글이나 기술적인 선택이 모두 있는

where there's Google and all these technological options.

그런 단계에 도달했다고 여기지 않을 겁니다.

So you've got actual evidence now that the kids so far going through your system,

당신은 학생들이 당신의 교육체계를 통과했다는 실제 증거를 가지고 있고

there's a dramatic increase in performance.

수행능력에 놀라운 진보가 있어요.

How do we help you move these ideas forward?

RS: I think it's that problem of ideas whose time has come.

And I've never been very evangelical about these things.

We put it out there.

Suddenly, you find people --

there's a group in Japan, which scares me very much,

which is called the Semlerists, and they have 120 companies.

세믈러주의자라는 사람들이 120개 회사를 가지고 있대요.

They've invited me. I've always been scared to go.

저를 초대했는데 저는 늘 가기가 겁났습니다.

덴마크에 소규모 회사 600개를 가진 단체가 있는데, 같은 걸 해요.

And there is a group in Holland that has 600 small, Dutch companies.

It's something that will flourish on its own.

스스로 번창하는 것이지요.

Part of it will be wrong, and it doesn't matter.

일부는 틀릴 수도 있지만 그건 중요하지 않습니다.

This will find its own place.

알아서 제자리를 찾을 테니까요.

And I'm afraid of the other one, which says,

다른 것이 좀 우려스러운데요,

this is so good you've got to do this.

"이게 좋으니까 이렇게 해야 해" 라고 하는 점이죠.

Let's set up a system and put lots of money into it

체계를 만들어서 많은 자금을 투자하면 사람들이 어떻게든 하겠지 하는 겁니다.

and then people will do it no matter what.

CA: So you have asked extraordinary questions your whole life.

크리스: 당신의 인생에서 놀라운 질문들을 하셨는데요.

It seems to me that's the fuel that's driven a lot of this.

그것이 이 모든 일을 이끌어낸 원동력으로 보입니다.

Nobody has any other question.

We have variations of this one question, from three onwards.

바로 이 질문의 여러가지 형태가 계속 있는 것이지요.

So when you spend time in a company, in a bureaucracy, in an organization

회사, 조직, 단체에서, 같은 사람으로서 시간을 보낼 때 생각해 보세요.

and you're saying, boy --

how many people do you know who on their death beds said,

죽음의 순간에 어느 누가

boy, I wish I had spent more time at the office?

회사에서 시간을 더 보낼걸 하는 사람이 있겠습니까?

So there's a whole thing of having the courage now --

이제 용기를 가져야 할 때입니다.

not in a week, not in two months,

이번 주안이나 두 달 이내가 아니라 여러분이 뭔가 찾았을 때가 아니라.

not when you find out you have something --

to say, no, what am I doing this for?

내가 왜 이걸 하고 있지?

Stop everything. Let me do something else.

모든 걸 멈추세요. 다른 걸 해보세요. 그래도 괜찮습니다.

And it will be okay,

어떤 과정에서 막혀있다면 지금 하고 있는 일보다 훨씬 나을 겁니다.

it will be much better than what you're doing,

if you're stuck in a process.

CA: So that strikes me as a profound and quite beautiful way to end
