So infectious diseases, right?

Every year, millions of people die of diseases such as T.B., malaria, HIV,

Every year, thousands of Americans die of seasonal flu.

Now of course, humans, we are creative. Right?

물론 오늘날 우리 인간은 창의적인 존재입니다. 그렇죠?

We have come up with ways to protect ourselves against these diseases.

이런 질병에 대항할 방법들을 생각해냈습니다.

We have drugs and vaccines.

약도 있고 백신도 있습니다.

And we're conscious -- we learn from our experiences

우리는 의식적으로 경험을 통해 배우고

and come up with creative solutions.

창의적인 해결책을 생각해냅니다.

We used to think we're alone in this, but now we know we're not.

예전에는 인간만 그런 줄 알았는데 이젠 아니라는 것을 압니다.

We're not the only medical doctors.

우리만 의료 의사가 아닙니다.

Now we know that there's a lot of animals out there that can do it too.

여러 가지 동물들도 그렇게 할 수 있는 걸 압니다.

Most famous, perhaps, chimpanzees.

가장 대표적으로는 침팬지일 겁니다.

Not so much different from us,

우리와 별로 다르지 않죠.

they can use plants to treat their intestinal parasites.

식물을 가지고 장속 기생충을 치료합니다.

But the last few decades have shown us that other animals can do it too:

다른 동물들도 그렇게 하는 것이 지난 몇 십년동안 발견되었습니다.

elephants, porcupines, sheep, goats, you name it.

코끼리, 고슴도치, 양, 염소, 여러가지가 있습니다.

And even more interesting than that is that recent discoveries are telling us

최근 발견된 더욱 흥미로운 것은

that insects and other little animals with smaller brains can use medication too.

곤충이나 뇌가 더욱 작은 동물도 약물을 쓴다는 겁니다.

The problem with infectious diseases, as we all know,

우리가 아는 감염병의 문제는 병원균이 계속 진화해서

is that pathogens continue to evolve,

and a lot of the drugs that we have developed

우리가 개발하는 약물이 효력을 잃는다는 겁니다.

are losing their efficacy.

And therefore, there is this great need to find new ways to discover drugs

그래서 이런 질병에 대항할 약을 발견할 새로운 방법을

that we can use against our diseases.

찾아야 하는 겁니다.

Now, I think that we should look at these animals,

그래서 저는 이러한 동물들을 살펴보고

and we can learn from them how to treat our own diseases.

As a biologist, I have been studying monarch butterflies for the last 10 years.

생물학자로서 지난 10년간 황제나비를 연구했습니다.

Now, monarchs are extremely famous for their spectacular migrations

황제나비는 엄청난 거리를 이동하는데

from the U.S. and Canada down to Mexico every year,

매년 미국, 캐나다에서 멕시코까지

where millions of them come together,

but it's not why I started studying them.

I study monarchs because they get sick.

They get sick like you. They get sick like me.

And I think what they do can tell us a lot about drugs

that we can develop for humans.

Now, the parasites that monarchs get infected with

are called ophryocystis elektroscirrha -- a mouthful.

What they do is they produce spores,

millions of spores on the outside of the butterfly

that are shown as little specks in between the scales of the butterfly.

And this is really detrimental to the monarch.

It shortens their lifespan,

나비의 수명을 줄입니다.

it reduces their ability to fly,

it can even kill them before they're even adults.

성충이 되기도 전에 죽게 만듭니다.

Very detrimental parasite.

매우 위험한 기생충입니다.

As part of my job, I spend a lot of time in the greenhouse growing plants,

and the reason for this is that monarchs are extremely picky eaters.

황제나비가 먹이 고르는데 까다롭기 때문입니다.

They only eat milkweed as larvae.

유충일때 대극과 식물만 먹습니다.

Luckily, there are several species of milkweed that they can use,

다행히 황제나비가 먹는 몇 종이 있습니다.

and all these milkweeds have cardenolides in them.

These are chemicals that are toxic.

They're toxic to most animals, but not to monarchs.

In fact, monarchs can take up the chemicals,

put it in their own bodies, and it makes them toxic

against their predators, such as birds.

And what they do, then, is advertise this toxicity

through their beautiful warning colorations

with this orange, black and white.

오렌지, 검정, 흰색으로요.

So what I did during my job is grow plants in the greenhouse,

저는 제 직장의 온실에서 다른 종류의 나비들을 길렀습니다.

different ones, different milkweeds.

어떤 것은 열대 대극과를 포함해 독성이 있습니다.

Some were toxic, including the tropical milkweed,

with very high concentrations of these cardenolides.

And some were not toxic.

And then I fed them to monarchs.

그것을 황제나비에게 먹였습니다.

Some of the monarchs were healthy. They had no disease.

But some of the monarchs were sick,

and what I found is that some of these milkweeds are medicinal,

meaning they reduce the disease symptoms in the monarch butterflies,

meaning these monarchs can live longer when they are infected

when feeding on these medicinal plants.

And when I found this, I had this idea,

and a lot of people said it was a crazy idea,

많은 이들이 말도 안된다고 했지만

but I thought, what if monarchs can use this?

제 생각에는 황제나비가 이걸 사용하는 것이 아닐까?

What if they can use these plants as their own form of medicine?

나비들이 치료약으로써 사용하는 게 아닐까?

What if they can act as medical doctors?

의사처럼 행동하는 것이 아닐까?

So my team and I started doing experiments.

그래서 제 팀과 저는 실험을 진행했습니다.

In the first types of experiments,

첫번째 실험에서 유충으로 선택하게 해봤습니다:

we had caterpillars, and gave them a choice:

medicinal milkweed versus non-medicinal milkweed.

약효가 있는 식물과 없는 식물중에서요.

And then we measured how much they ate of each species over their lifetime.

생애동안 각 종류를 얼마나 먹는지 측정했습니다.

And the result, as so often in science, was boring:

과학에서의 결과는 정말 따분합니다.

Fifty percent of their food was medicinal. Fifty percent was not.

50대 50이었습니다.

These caterpillars didn't do anything for their own welfare.

So then we moved on to adult butterflies,

and we started asking the question

whether it's the mothers that can medicate their offspring.

Can the mothers lay their eggs on medicinal milkweed

that will make their future offspring less sick?

미래의 유충들이 덜 아프게 하는 것일까요?

We have done these experiments now over several years,

이 실험을 수 년동안 진행했고 언제나 같은 결과를 얻었습니다.

and always get the same results.

What we do is we put a monarch in a big cage,

a medicinal plant on one side, a non-medicinal plant on the other side,

and then we measure the number of eggs that the monarchs lay on each plant.

그리고 각 식물에 낳는 알 개수를 측정해 봤습니다.

And what we find when we do that is always the same.

What we find is that the monarchs strongly prefer the medicinal milkweed.

황제나비가 약초를 강하게 선호한다는 겁니다.

In other words, what these females are doing

즉, 암컷 나비들은

is they're laying 68 percent of their eggs in the medicinal milkweed.

68퍼센트의 알을 약초 위에 낳습니다.

Intriguingly, what they do is they actually transmit the parasites

흥미롭게도 알을 낳을 때 실제로 기생충을 전염시킵니다.

when they're laying the eggs.

They cannot prevent this.

그것을 막지는 못하고, 스스로 약을 먹지도 못합니다.

They can also not medicate themselves.

But what these experiments tell us

is that these monarchs, these mothers, can lay their eggs on medicinal milkweed

황제나비 어미가 약초 위에 알을 낳아서

that will make their future offspring less sick.

미래의 유충들이 덜 아프게 한다는 겁니다.

Now, this is a really important discovery, I think,

이건 매우 중요한 발견이라고 저는 생각합니다.

not just because it tells us something cool about nature,

자연의 멋진 면을 보여주었기 때문만이 아니라

but also because it may tell us something more about how we should find drugs.

어떻게 약물을 발견할지 알려주기 때문입니다.

Now, these are animals that are very small

나비가 매우 작은 동물이라 단순할 것이라 생각합니다.

and we tend to think of them as very simple.

They have tiny little brains,

나비는 매우 작은 뇌를 가지고도

yet they can do this very sophisticated medication.

이렇게 정교한 약물치료를 할 수 있습니다.

Now, we know that even today, most of our drugs

오늘날 대부분의 약물이

derive from natural products, including plants,

식물을 포함한 자연에서 유래함을 알고 있습니다.

and in indigenous cultures,

토착 문화에서는

traditional healers often look at animals to find new drugs.

전통 치료사들이 신약을 찾기 위해 동물을 살펴봅니다.

In this way, elephants have told us how to treat stomach upset,

이렇게 코끼리를 통해 소화불량 치료법을 발견하고

and porcupines have told people how to treat bloody diarrhea.

고슴도치를 보고 엄청난 설사 치료법을 알게 되었습니다.

What I think is important, though, is to move beyond

중요한 것은 뇌용량이 큰 동물들을 살펴보는 것을 넘어서

these large-brained mammals and give these guys more credit,

곤충들의 방법을 인정하는 겁니다.

these simple animals, these insects that we tend to think of

너무 너무 단순하고 작은 뇌를 가졌다고 생각하는

as very, very simple with tiny little brains.

이 단순한 곤충들을 말입니다.

The discovery that these animals can also use medication

이런 동물들이 약물을 쓸 수 있다는 발견은

opens up completely new avenues,

완전히 새로운 분야를 열어줍니다.

and I think that maybe one day, we will be treating human diseases

언젠가는 인간의 질병을

나비로 인해 발견한 약물로 치료하게 될거라고 생각합니다.

with drugs that were first discovered by butterflies,

and I think that is an amazing opportunity worth pursuing.

찾아볼 만한 가치가 있는 대단한 기회라고 봅니다.
