There are a quarter of a million -- at least those are the ones we know about --

a quarter of a million species of flowering plants.

And flowers are a real bugger.

꽃이란 게 참으로 까다롭죠.

They're really difficult for plants to produce.

식물로써는 꽃을 피우기가 참으로 힘듭니다.

They take an enormous amount of energy and a lot of resources.

엄청난 에너지와 자원이 투자되는 일이라고 할 수 있죠.

Why would they go to that bother?

그런데 왜 꽃을 피우냐고요?

And the answer of course, like so many things in the world,

정답은 당연하게도, 세상에 많은 다른 생물들과 마찬가지로,

is sex.

섹스 때문입니다.

I know what's on your mind when you're looking at these pictures.

여러분이 이 사진을 보실 때 어떤 생각을 하실지 압니다.

And the reason that sexual reproduction is so important --

섹스를 통한 번식이 왜 이토록 중요한 지에 대한 이유는 말이죠...

there are lots of other things that plants can do to reproduce.

사실 식물들은 여러가지 번식방법들을 가지고 있습니다.

You can take cuttings;

꺾꽂이 방식이 일단 있지요.

they can sort of have sex with themselves;

그리고 스스로와 섹스를 하는 방식도 있습니다.

they can pollinate themselves.

자가 수분을 할 수도 있지요.

But they really need to spread their genes

하지만 식물들은 유전자를 널리 보내서

to mix with other genes

다른 유전자와 섞임으로써,

so that they can adapt to environmental niches.

주위 환경의 틈새시장을 공략할 필요가 있습니다.

Evolution works that way.

진화란 그런식으로 이루어지는 것이지요.

Now the way that plants transmit that information

식물들이 그러한 유전자 정보를 전달하는 것은

is through pollen.

꽃가루를 통해서 이루어지지요.

Some of you may have seen some of these pictures before.

어떤 분들은 이미 이 사진들을 보셨겠네요.

As I say, every home should have a scanning electron microscope

제 생각에는, 모든 가정들이 전자 현미경을 하나씩 구매해서

to be able to see these.

이런 것들을 들여다 볼 수 있어야 한다고 생각합니다.

And there is as many different kinds of pollen

꽃가루의 종류는 꽃들의 종류만큼이나

as there are flowering plants.

많고 다양합니다.

And that's actually rather useful for forensics and so on.

그리고 그런 꽃가루에 대한 지식은 과학수사에서 활용되기도 하죠.

Most pollen that causes hay fever for us

우리에게 꽃가루 알레르기를 일으키기도 하는

is from plants that use the wind

꽃가루들의 대부분은 바람을 통해서

to disseminate the pollen,

먼 곳으로 전달이 됩니다.

and that's a very inefficient process,

그런 방식은 매우 비 효율적이지요.

which is why it gets up our noses so much.

꽃가루가 우리 콧구멍으로 자꾸 들어오는 것이 다 이 비효율적인 방법 때문입니다.

Because you have to chuck out masses and masses of it,

바람을 통해 수분하려다 보니, 성세포를 포함하고 있는 꽃가루를

hoping that your sex cells, your male sex cells,

엄청나게 많이 생산하여 뿜어냄으로 인해

which are held within the pollen,

몇몇 꽃가루는 운 좋게

will somehow reach another flower just by chance.

So all the grasses, which means all of the cereal crops,

and most of the trees

have wind-borne pollen.

But most species

actually use insects to do their bidding,

and that's more intelligent in a way,

because the pollen, they don't need so much of it.

The insects

and other species

can take the pollen,

transfer it directly to where it's required.

정확히 가야할 곳으로 옮겨줄 수가 있어요.

So we're aware, obviously, of the relationship

우리는 이러한 벌레와 식물과의 관계를

between insects and plants.

잘알고 있지요.

There's a symbiotic relationship there,

이건 공생관계라고 합니다.

whether it's flies or birds or bees,

파리든 새든 혹은 벌이든 간에

they're getting something in return,

이 동물들은 노동의 댓가를 받는데요.

and that something in return is generally nectar.

그러한 댓가는 보통 꿀(넥타)입니다.

Sometimes that symbiosis

종종 이러한 공생은

has led to wonderful adaptations --

아무 멋진 적응 현상들을 유도하기도 하는데요.

the hummingbird hawk-moth

꼬리박각시 나방이 그러한

is beautiful in its adaptation.

아름다운 적응의 한 예입니다.

The plant gets something,

식물도 무언가를 얻고

and the hawk-moth spreads the pollen somewhere else.

나방은 대신 꽃가루를 다른 곳으로 전달해 주지요.

Plants have evolved

어떤 식물들은 벌들이

to create little landing strips here and there

길을 잃지 않게끔 이곳 저곳에 이착륙을 할 수 있는

for bees that might have lost their way.

작은 활주로들이 자라도록 진화해오기도 했습니다.

There are markings on many plants

많은 식물들에는 다른 곤충처럼 보이는

that look like other insects.

표식이 있기도 합니다.

These are the anthers of a lily,

이것은 백합의 꽃밥입니다.

cleverly done

영리하게도 의심없이 다가온

so that when the unsuspecting insect

곤충이 내려앉게 되면,

lands on it,

다른 꽃밥이 뒤집히면서

the anther flips up and whops it on the back

곤충의 뒤를 덮치게 되고,

with a great load of pollen that it then goes to another plant with.

엄청난 양의 화분이 다른 식물에게 전달될 수 있죠.

And there's an orchid

이 난초는 신기하게

that might look to you as if it's got jaws,

마치 턱을 갖고 있는 것처럼 보이죠.

and in a way, it has; it forces the insect to crawl out,

한편으로는 그렇다고 할 수 있어요. 곤충들이 기어나가게끔 하고는

getting covered in pollen that it takes somewhere else.

그 탓에 잔뜩 화분을 묻히고 다른 곳으로 가게 만들죠

Orchids: there are 20,000, at least,

난초는 적어도 약 20,000 개의

species of orchids --

종이 존재합니다.

amazingly, amazingly diverse.

놀라운, 정말 놀라울 정도로 다양하죠.

And they get up to all sorts of tricks.

그런 다양한 난초는 정말 다양한 트릭을 구사합니다.

They have to try and attract pollinators

난초들은 화분을 전달하는 매개체들이 자신들에게 필요한 일을 시킬 수 있도록

to do their bidding.

유인하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울여야하죠.

This orchid, known as Darwin's orchid,

because it's one that he studied

and made a wonderful prediction when he saw it --

you can see that there's a very long nectar tube

that descends down

아래로 쭉 내려가는

from the orchid.

And basically what the insect has to do --

그리고 곤충이 해야하는 일은....

we're in the middle of the flower --

it has to stick its little proboscis

그 작은 주둥이를 관에 맞추어 뻗어서

right into the middle of that

이 꽃의 가운데를 통과해서는

and all the way down that nectar tube

저 관의 끝까지 주둥이를 밀어넣어서는

to get to the nectar.

밑에 있는 꿀을 가져가야 하는 것입니다.

And Darwin said, looking at this flower,

다윈은 이 꽃을 보고는 이렇게 말했습니다.

"I guess something has coevolved with this."

"분명히 이 난과 함께 진화한 생명체가 있을 것이다."

And sure enough,

그리고 아니나 다를까

there's the insect.

이 곤충이 발견된겁니다.

And I mean, normally it kind of rolls it away,

저 주둥이는 평상시 감겨져 있지만,

but in its erect form,

완전 뻗어졌을 때는

that's what it looks like.

저렇게 생기게 되는 것이죠.

Now you can imagine

이제 이런 상상이 가능할 것입니다.

that if nectar

만약에 꿀이

is such a valuable thing

그렇게 귀중한 것이고,

and expensive for the plant to produce

꽃이 생산해 내기에 비싼 자원이라면,

and it attracts lots of pollinators,

그리고 그것으로 수분매개체를 유혹해야 한다면

then, just as in human sex,

꽃들도 마치 사람들의 섹스와 같이

people might start to deceive.

속임수를 쓸 수가 있겠죠.

They might say, "I've got a bit of nectar. Do you want to come and get it?"

식물들은 아마 "나한테 꿀이 좀 있는데, 와서 가져갈래요?"

Now this is a plant.

이 식물을 보세요.

This is a plant here

여기 이 식물은 남아프리카에서

that insects in South Africa just love,

곤충들에게 사랑받는 꽃입니다.

and they've evolved with a long proboscis

이 꽃들은 긴 주둥이의 곤충들이

to get the nectar at the bottom.

바닥에 있는 꿀을 가져가는 것과 함께 진화했습니다.

And this is the mimic.

이건 흉내를 내는 꽃입니다.

So this is a plant that is mimicking the first plant.

이 꽃은 첫번째 꽃을 흉내내고 있어요.

And here is the long-probosced fly

이게 긴 주둥이의 파리인데,

that has not gotten any nectar from the mimic,

따라쟁이 꽃에게서는 꿀을 얻지 못했죠.

because the mimic doesn't give it any nectar. It thought it would get some.

따라쟁이는 아무런 꿀을 주지 못하는데, 파리는 얻을 거라고 생각한거죠.

So not only has the fly

이 파리는 이 따라쟁이로부터

not got the nectar from the mimic plant,

꿀을 얻지 못한 것만이 아니라

it's also -- if you look very closely

just at the head end, you can see that it's got a bit of pollen

머리의 끝에는

that it would be transmitting to another plant,

만약에 어떤 식물학자가 다가와서

if only some botanist hadn't come along

저 꽃과 파리를 파란 카드에다가 끼워 버리지만 않았다면

and stuck it to a blue piece of card.

다른 식물에게 전달했을 조금의 꽃가루가 있습니다.

Now deceit carries on through the plant kingdom.

속임수는 식물계에 널리 퍼져 있어요.

This flower with its black dots:

이 검은 점을 갖고 있는 식물의 경우

they might look like black dots to us,

우리에게는 검은 점처럼 보이지만,

but if I tell you, to a male insect of the right species,

특정 종류의 수컷 곤충에게는

that looks like two females

온몸이 달아 있는 두 마리의

who are really, really hot to trot.

암컷 곤충으로 보이는 겁니다.

(Laughter)

And when the insect gets there and lands on it,

그리고 그 곤충이 그 곳에 내려앉으면,

dousing itself in pollen, of course, that it's going to take to another plant,

화분을 잔뜩 뒤집어 쓰고는, 물론, 또 다른 식물로 옮겨 가겠죠.

if you look at the every-home-should-have-one scanning electron microscope picture,

만약에 여러분이 "누구나 집에 하나쯤은 있는" 그런 전자현미경으로 찍은 사진을 보시면

you can see that there are actually some patterning there,

실제로 꽃에 패턴이 있는 걸 보실 수 있을 겁니다,

which is three-dimensional.

3차원으로 되어 있죠.

So it probably even feels good for the insect,

그 무늬는 우리가 보기에 예쁜 것만이 아니라, 곤충에게도

as well as looking good.

매력적일 겁니다.

And these electron microscope pictures --

그리고 이 전자현미경 사진은

here's one of an orchid mimicking an insect --

- 여기 곤충을 흉내내고 있는 난초가 있죠 -

you can see that different parts of the structure

꽃의 구조에서 각 부분은 우리의 눈에도 다른 색상과

have different colors and different textures to our eye,

다른 질감을 갖고 있는 그러한 부분들이

have very, very different textures

실제로 곤충들에게는 매우매우

to what an insect might perceive.

도드라지게 다른 질감으로 보인다는 거죠.

And this one is evolved to mimic

그리고 이 것은 몇몇 딱정벌레에서

a glossy metallic surface

보이는 반짝거리는 메탈릭한 느낌을

you see on some beetles.

따라하고 있지요.

And under the scanning electron microscope,

그리고 이것을 전자현미경으로 관찰하면

you can see the surface there --

그런 것들의 질감이, 같은 꽃의 다른 부분에서

really quite different from the other surfaces we looked at.

볼 수 있는 것과는 확실히 다른 질감을 갖고 있다는 것을 알 수 있죠.

Sometimes the whole plant

어떤 경우는 우리가 그냥 보기에도

mimics an insect, even to us.

식물 전체가 곤충을 닮았지요.

I mean, I think that looks like some sort of flying animal or beast.

제 말씀은, 저 모습은 저에게 마치 날개가 달린 동물로 보입니다.

It's a wonderful, amazing thing.

정말 대단하고 놀라운 일이에요.

This one's clever. It's called obsidian.

이건 완전 영리한 꽃이죠. '옵시디안'(흑요석)이라고 불리웁니다.

I think of it as insidium sometimes.

저는 가끔 '인시디움'으로 생각하지만 말이죠.

To the right species of bee,

특정한 종류의 벌들에게는

this looks like another very aggressive bee,

이건 또다른 공격적인 벌처럼 보이죠.

and it goes and bonks it on the head lots and lots of times to try and drive it away,

그래서 벌들은 이 허상의 벌을 쫓아내기 위해서 날아와서 머리로 여러 차례 들이받습니다.

and, of course, covers itself with pollen.

그리고는 물론, 꽃가루를 잔뜩 뒤집어 쓰게 되죠.

The other thing it does

이 꽃이 하는 다른 역할은

is that this plant mimics another orchid

이 꽃은 곤충들에게 엄청나게 많은

that has a wonderful store

식량을 제공하는 난초를

of food for insects.

닮았다는 겁니다.

And this one doesn't have anything for them.

실제론 아무것도 갖고 있지 않으면서 말이죠.

So it's deceiving on two levels --

그래서 이건 두 단계의 속임수를 갖고 있는겁니다.

fabulous.

대단하죠.

(Laughter)

Here we see ylang ylang,

이것은 일랑 일랑 이라는 겁니다.

the component of many perfumes.

많은 향수의 재료로 사용되죠.

I actually smelt someone with some on earlier.

제가 얼마전에 실제로 이 향수를 뿌린 사람을 맡아봤었습니다만,

And the flowers don't really have to be that gaudy.

꽃 그 자체는 그렇게 번지르르할 필요가 없습니다,

They're sending out a fantastic array of scent

그것들은 향기를 맡게 되는 곤충들에게는 대단히

to any insect that'll have it.

환상적인 향기를 내뿜고 있거든요.

This one doesn't smell so good.

이건 그렇게 향기롭진 않습니다.

This is a flower

이게 꽃이죠.

that really, really smells pretty nasty

그리고 정말, 정말, 정말 더러운 냄새가 납니다.

and is designed, again, evolved,

썩어가는 고기처럼 보이도록

to look like carrion.

진화되어 온 거죠.

So flies love this.

그래서 파리들이 정말 좋아합니다.

They fly in and they pollinate.

파리들이 달려들어 수분을 하게 되는거죠

This, which is helicodiceros,

이 '헬리코디세로스'라는 식물은

is also known as dead horse arum.

'죽은 말 아룸'이라는 이름으로도 불리우죠.(아룸:유럽,북아프리카,아시아 등지에 주로 서식하는 25종의 꽃식물들의 명칭)

I don't know what a dead horse actually smells like,

저는 진짜 말의 시체가 어떤 냄새를 풍기는지는 몰라도

but this one probably smells pretty much like it.

이 꽃은 아마 정말 비슷한 향을 낼겁니다.

It's really horrible.

정말 끔찍한 냄새라죠.

And blowflies just can't help themselves.

그리고 쇠파리들은 이 냄새를 맡으면 참지를 못합니다.

They fly into this thing,

쇠파리들은 이 녀석에게 달려들어서

and they fly all the way down it.

그 꽃의 안으로 깊숙히 들어갑니다.

They lay their eggs in it,

이게 커다란 시체라고 생각하면서

thinking it's a nice bit of carrion,

그 안에 알을 낳고 나오는 겁니다.

and not realizing that there's no food for the eggs, that the eggs are going to die,

실제론 그 알들이 먹을 식량이 존재하지 않는다는 걸, 알들은 그냥 죽는될 것이라는 사실을 모른채 말이죠.

but the plant, meanwhile, has benefited,

반면에, 이 식물은 이득을 보게 되죠.

because the bristles release

식물안에 있던 털이 느슨해지면서

and the flies disappear

파리는 날아가게 되고,

to pollinate the next flower -- fantastic.

다음 식물에 가서 수분을 시키게 되는 거죠 - 대박이죠.

Here's arum, arum maculatum,

이건 아룸 마쿨라툼이라는 식물입니다.

"lords and ladies," or "cuckoo-pint" in this country.

여기서는 lords and ladies 또는 cuckoo-pint 라고 불리우죠

I photographed this thing last week in Dorset.

이건 제가 지난 주에 Dorset 에서 찍은 겁니다.

This thing heats up

이 꽃은 주변의 온도보다

by about 15 degrees above ambient temperature --

15도가량(화씨) 더 따뜻하게 달아오릅니다.

amazing.

아주 놀랍죠.

And if you look down into it,

그리고 그 안을 들여다 보신다면

there's this sort of dam past the spadix,

꽃차례(spadix)를 지나 어떤 장막 같은 것이 있는데,

flies get attracted by the heat --

이 안에서 휘발하기 쉬운 화학물질들이

which is boiling off volatile chemicals, little midges --

끓어대고 있고, 이것에 유혹된 혹파리들은 그 안에 있는

and they get trapped underneath in this container.

공간에 갇히게 됩니다. 파리들은 갇힌채로

They drink this fabulous nectar

이 환상적인 꿀들을 즐기고 있게 되고

and then they're all a bit sticky.

잔뜩 끈적해져 있다가

At night they get covered in pollen,

밤이 될 무렵에는 파리들에게 샤워하듯이

which showers down over them,

쏟아져 내린 꽃가루를 뒤집어 쓰게 되고

and then the bristles that we saw above,

아까 보았던 털들은,

they sort of wilt and allow all these midges out, covered in pollen --

살짝 구부러져서는 꽃가루를 뒤집어 쓴 파리들이 나갈 수 있게 하죠.

fabulous thing.

환상적이죠.

This is the philodendron selloum.

이건 가래잎 필로덴드론입니다.

For anyone here from Brazil, you'll know about this plant.

브라질에서 오신 분이 있으면, 이걸 아마 알아보실 겁니다.

This is the most amazing thing.

이건 정말 놀라운 식물이에요.

That sort of phallic bit there

저기에 남근처럼 생긴 건

is about a foot long.

약 30센티가량되죠.

And it does something

그리고 저건, 제가 아는 다른

that no other plant that I know of does,

어떤 식물도 하지 않는 행동을 합니다.

and that is that when it flowers --

그 행동이란, 저 식물이 꽃을 피울 때는

that's the spadix in the middle there --

저기 가운데 있는 것이 꽃차례인데,

for a period of about two days,

약 2일간 동안은, 마치 포유류와

it metabolizes in a way

같은 식으로 대사 작용을

which is rather similar to mammals.

합니다.

So instead of having starch,

그래서, 식물의 음식이라고 할 수 있는

which is the food of plants,

it takes something rather similar to brown fat

and burns it at such a rate

that it's burning fat, metabolizing,

about the rate of a small cat.

And that's twice the energy output, weight for weight,

than a hummingbird --

absolutely astonishing.

정말로 대단하죠.

This thing does something else which is unusual.

이 식물은 이것외에 또 신기한 일을 하는데요.

Not only will it raise itself to 115 Fahrenheit,

그 2일간 이 식물은 화씨 115도, 섭씨로는 43도쯤

43 or 44 degrees Centigrade, for two days,

으로 온도가 올라가는 것만이 아니라,

but it keeps constant temperature.

그 온도를 꾸준히 유지해 냅니다.

There's a thermoregulation mechanism in there

식물이 자체적으로 같은 온도를 유지하기 위해서

that keeps constant temperature.

체온 조절 기제가 작동한다는 거죠.

"Now why does it do this," I hear you ask.

그런걸 왜하는거야? 아마 이렇게 생각하시겠죠.

Now wouldn't you know it,

아마 이건 모르셨겠지만,

there's some beetles that just love to make love at that temperature.

어떤 딱정벌레는 딱 저 정도의 온도가 갖춰진 장소에서 사랑을 나누기를

And they get inside, and they get it all on.

좋아해서 저 꽃안에서 난리가 나는 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And the plant showers them with pollen,

그리고 꽃은 꽃가루 세례를 하는 겁니다.

and off they go and pollinate.

벌레들이 나가면, 수분을 하고 다니겠죠.

And what a wonderful thing it is.

얼마나 멋집니까.

Now most pollinators

우리가 아는 대부분의 매개체는

that we think about are insects,

곤충들입니다.

but actually in the tropics,

하지만, 정글속에서는

many birds and butterflies pollinate.

많은 새와 나비들 또한 수분을 돕지요.

And many of the tropical flowers are red,

대부분의 정글의 꽃은 붉은 색입니다.

and that's because butterflies and birds

왜냐하면 나비와 새들은, 우리 생각에,

see similarly to us, we think,

빨간색을 매우 잘 식별

and can see the color red very well.

할 수 있다고 보거든요.

But if you look at the spectrum,

스펙트럼을 보신다면,

birds and us, we see red, green and blue

인간과 새는, 빨간색, 녹색, 파란색을 보죠.

and see that spectrum.

그리고 저 스펙트럼이 보입니다.

Insects see green, blue and ultraviolet,

곤충은 녹색, 파란색 그리고 자외선을 보지요.

and they see various shades of ultraviolet.

그리고 자외선이 맺는 그림자도 잘 봅니다.

So there's something that goes on off the end there.

그래서 저 우측에 있는 색 영역에서 무슨일인가 벌어진다는 거죠.

"And wouldn't it be great if we could somehow see what that is," I hear you ask.

저게 뭔지 볼 수 있으면 참 좋겠네, 라고 물으시겠죠.

Well yes we can.

물론 볼 수 있습니다.

So what is an insect seeing?

곤충들이 보는 이미지는 무엇일까요?

Last week I took these pictures of rock rose,

지난 주에 제가 록로즈 사진을 몇 장 찍었습니다.

helianthemum, in Dorset.

Dorset 에서 이 헬리오스를 찍었죠.

These are little yellow flowers like we all see,

이건 보시다 시피 작은 노란 꽃이죠.

little yellow flowers all over the place.

이 작은 꽃들이 여기저기에 있죠.

And this is what it looks like with visible light.

이게 가시광선 아래서의 모습입니다.

This is what it looks like if you take out the red.

그리고 이게 빨간색을 제거한 모습이죠.

Most bees don't perceive red.

대부분의 벌들은 빨간색을 보지 못합니다.

And then I put some ultraviolet filters on my camera

그리고 제가 자외선 필터를 카메라에 장착해서,

and took a very, very long exposure

노출시간을 매우매우 길게 한 다음에

with the particular frequencies of ultraviolet light

특정한 주파수의 자외선을 잡았고

and this is what I got.

And that's a real fantastic bull's eye.

Now we don't know

exactly what a bee sees,

any more than you know what I'm seeing

And that's the sort of thing that it would be seeing.

because sunscreens work by absorbing ultraviolet light.

So maybe the chemical in that would be useful.

그래서 아마 저런 화학성분은 매우 유용할 겁니다.

마지막으로 이건 달맞이꽃입니다.

숨겨져 있는 무늬가 아주 환상적입니다.

And I love the idea of something hidden.

저는 이렇게 숨겨져 있는 것들이 좋아요.

I think there's something poetic here,

뭔가 시적인 무언가가 있는 것 같잖아요.

that these pictures taken with ultraviolet filter,

이 사진들도 자외선 필터를 끼고 찍었는데,

the main use of that filter

그 필터의 주용도는

is for astronomers to take pictures of Venus --

주로 천문학자들이 금성의 사진

actually the clouds of Venus.

정확히는 금성의 구름을 찍을 때 쓰죠.

That's the main use of that filter.

그게 주 용도인데, 금성은

Venus, of course, is the god of love and fertility,

그 자체가 사랑과 생식의 상징이고,

which is the flower story.

꽃과 같은 의미라고 볼 수 있겠죠.

And just as flowers spend a lot of effort

그리고 꽃들이 꽃가루 매개체들이

trying to get pollinators to do their bidding,

수분을 꽃을 대신 하도록 엄청나게 노력함과 더불어

they've also somehow managed to persuade us to plant great fields full of them

우리 인간으로 하여금 벌판을 전부 꽃으로 가득 채울 정도로 심고는

and give them to each other

새로운 생명의 탄생이나 죽음의 순간, 그리고

at times of birth and death,

특히나 결혼의 순간에 서로에게 꽃을

and particularly at marriage,

주고 받도록 설득을 하고 있는거죠.

which, when you think of it,

결혼이란 건 특히나 그 의미를

is the moment that encapsulates

잘 생각해본다면, 유전적 형질을

the transfer of genetic material

하나의 생명체에서 다른 생명체에게

from one organism to another.

전달을 하는 그런 순간이기도 하죠.
