and there's a dairy cow.

It's a quite wonderfully designed animal.

젖소는 꽤 훌륭하게 설계된 동물입니다.

And I was thinking, how do I introduce this?

And I thought, well, maybe that old doggerel by Joyce Kilmer,

you know: "Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree."

And you might say, "Well, God designed the cow."

But, of course, God got a lot of help.

This is the ancestor of cattle.

This is the aurochs.

And it was designed by natural selection,

Now, why am I talking about cows?

Because I want to say that much the same thing is true of religions.

Religions are natural phenomena -- they're just as natural as cows.

They have evolved over millennia.

They have a biological base, just like the aurochs.

They have become domesticated,

and human beings have been redesigning their religions for thousands of years.

This is TED, and I want to talk about design.

여기는 TED니까, 전 설계 얘기를 하고 싶습니다.

Because what I've been doing for the last four years --

really since the first time you saw me --

some of you saw me at TED when I was talking about religion --

and in the last four years,

I've been working just about non-stop on this topic.

And you might say it's about the reverse engineering of religions.

Now that very idea, I think, strikes terror in many people,

or anger, or anxiety of one sort or another.

And that is the spell that I want to break.

I want to say, no, religions are an important natural phenomenon.

저는, 종교란 중요한 자연 현상이라고 봅니다.

We should study them with the same intensity

우리는 종교를 똑같은 강도로 연구해야 합니다.

that we study all the other important natural phenomena,

다른 모든 중요한 자연 현상들을 연구할 때처럼 말이죠.

like global warming, as we heard so eloquently last night from Al Gore.

어젯밤 앨 고어가 멋지게 강연해준 지구 온난화 같은 현상들을요.

오늘날의 종교들은 훌륭하게, 아주 훌륭하게 설계되었습니다.

Today's religions are brilliantly designed -- brilliantly designed.

They are immensely powerful social institutions

종교들은 어마어마하게 강력한 사회적 제도이며

and many of their features can be traced back to earlier features

종교의 많은 속성들은 초기의 속성들로 추적될 수 있어서

that we can really make sense of by reverse engineering.

And, as with the cow, there's a mixture of evolutionary design --

designed by natural selection itself --

You don't do book talks at TED,

but I'm going to have just one slide about my book,

because there is one message in it

이 모임에서 꼭 들려드려야 할 것 같거든요.

which I think this group really needs to hear.

And I would be very interested to get your responses to this.

It's the one policy proposal that I make in the book,

at this time, when I claim not to know enough about religion

종교에 대해서 더 잘 알기 위해서가 아니라,

to know what other policy proposals to make.

달리 어떤 제안을 할 수 있을 지 궁금하기 때문입니다.

And it's one that echoes remarks that you've heard already today.

여러분들이 오늘날 이미 들어봤을만한 주장을 되풀이하는 제안입니다.

Here's my proposal,

I'm going to just take a couple of minutes to explain it:

잠깐 동안 설명해보도록 하겠습니다.

Education on world religions for all of our children --

우리의 아이들 모두에게 세계의 종교들을 가르치자는 겁니다.

in primary school, in high school,

초중고등학교, 공립과 사립학교, 그리고 가정학습에서도요.

in public schools, in private schools and in home schooling.

So what I'm proposing is,

즉, 제가 제안하는 것은

just as we require reading, writing, arithmetic, American history,

읽기, 쓰기, 산수, 국사가 필수 과목이듯이,

so we should have a curriculum on facts about all the religions of the world --

세상의 모든 종교들에 대한 사실들에 관한

교과과정이 있어야 한다는 것입니다.

각 종교들의 역사, 교리, 성서,

about their history, about their creeds, about their texts,

their music, their symbolisms, their prohibitions, their requirements.

음악, 상징주의, 금지사항, 요구사항에 대한 교과과정 말입니다.

And this should be presented factually, straightforwardly,

그리고 그 과정은 사실에 입각하여 곧이곧대로 가르쳐져야 합니다.

with no particular spin, to all of the children in the country.

And as long as you teach them that,

you can teach them anything else you like.

각자 가르치고 싶은 걸 가르칠 수 있게 하자는 겁니다.

That, I think, is maximal tolerance for religious freedom.

그것이, 제 생각에는 종교의 자유라는 것에 대한 최대치의 관용입니다.

As long as you inform your children about other religions,

여러분의 아이들에게 다른 종교들에 대하여 알게 한 다음에야 비로소,

then you may -- and as early as you like and whatever you like --

여러분들의 아이들이 몇 살이든, 무엇을 가르치든,

teach them whatever creed you want them to learn.

아이들이 배웠으면 싶은 교리를 가르쳐도 된다는 것입니다.

But also let them know about other religions.

다만 다른 종교들에 대해서도 알게 하자는 것이지요.

Now, why do I say that?

제가 왜 이런 소리를 하겠습니까?

Because democracy depends on an informed citizenship.

왜냐하면 민주주의란 식견 있는 시민에게 달려있기 때문입니다.

Informed consent is the very bedrock of our understanding of democracy.

숙지된 동의야말로 민주주의에 대한

우리 이해의 기반입니다.

Misinformed consent is not worth it.

제대로 알려지지 않은 채 얻은 동의는 무가치합니다.

It's like a coin flip; it doesn't count, really.

동전 던지는 것과 같아요. 그냥 그건 아닌 겁니다. 하나마나에요.

Democracy depends on informed consent.

민주주의는 숙지된 동의에 달려 있습니다.

This is the way we treat people as responsible adults.

이건 사람들을 책임있는 어른으로 대접하는 방법입니다.

Now, children below the age of consent are a special case.

Parents -- I'm going to use a word that Pastor Rick just used --

parents are stewards of their children.

부모란 자기 아이들의 목자인 것입니다.

자식들을 소유하는 게 아니죠.

They don't own them.

You can't own your children.

자식들은 소유할 수 있는 게 아닙니다.

You have a responsibility to the world,

여러분에게는 세상에 대하여, 국가에 대하여,

to the state, to them, to take care of them right.

자식들에 대하여, 자식들을 제대로 돌봐야 할 책임이 있습니다.

You may teach them whatever creed you think is most important,

여러분이 생각하기에 가장 중요하다고 생각되는 교리를 뭐든 가르치셔도 됩니다만,

but I say you have a responsibility to let them be informed

세상에 있는 다른 모든 교리들에 대해서도 자식들에게 알려줘야 할

about all the other creeds in the world, too.

The reason I've taken this time is I've been fascinated to hear

some of the reactions to this.

One reviewer for a Roman Catholic newspaper called it "totalitarian."

It strikes me as practically libertarian.

Is it totalitarian to require reading, writing and arithmetic?

I don't think so.

All I'm saying is --

and facts, facts only; no values, just facts --

about all the world's religions.

Another reviewer called it "hilarious."

Well, I'm really bothered by the fact

that anybody would think that was hilarious.

It seems to me to be such a plausible,

I know many religions

are so anxious about preserving the purity of their faith among their children

that they are intent on keeping their children ignorant of other faiths.

I don't think that's defensible.

Back to the cow.

That's the steward.

Cows couldn't live without human stewards -- they're domesticated.

They're a sort of ectosymbiont.

일종의 체외공생 관계지요.

They depend on us for their survival.

소들의 생존은 우리에게 달려 있습니다.

And Pastor Rick was just talking about sheep.

방금 릭 목사께서 양 얘기를 하셨는데요.

I'm going to talk about sheep, too.

저도 양 얘기를 해보겠습니다.

There's a lot of serendipitous convergence here.

오늘따라 우연히 겹치는 게 참 많네요.

How clever it was of sheep to acquire shepherds!

양이 목자를 얻은 것은 참으로 영리한 일입니다!

(Laughter)

Think of what this got them.

그 덕에 양들이 뭘 얻었나 보세요.

They could outsource all their problems:

양들은 자기들의 문제를 아웃소싱할 수 있었습니다.

protection from predators, food-finding ...

포식자로부터의 방어, 먹이 찾기, 건강 관리.

(Laughter)

... health maintenance.

(Laughter)

The only cost in most flocks -- not even this -- a loss of free mating.

대부분의 양떼들에게 유일한 비용이란 자유로운 교미의 박탈뿐이지요.

What a deal!

얼마나 좋습니까.

"How clever of sheep!" you might say.

"양들이 영리하구나!" 하실만 합니다.

Except, of course, it wasn't the sheep's cleverness.

We all know sheep are not exactly rocket scientists -- they're not very smart.

It wasn't the cleverness of the sheep at all.

They were clueless.

But it was a very clever move.

Whose clever move was it?

It was the clever move of natural selection itself.

The designs discovered by the process of natural selection

Again and again biologists are fascinated with the brilliance of what's discovered.

But the process itself is without purpose,

without foresight, without design.

When I was here four years ago,

I told the story about an ant climbing a blade of grass.

And why the ant was doing it was because its brain had been infected

So it was sort of a spooky story.

And I think some people may have misunderstood.

Lancet flukes aren't smart.

I submit that the intelligence of a lancet fluke is down there,

somewhere between petunia and carrot.

They're not really bright. They don't have to be.

The lesson we learn from this is:

you don't have to have a mind to be a beneficiary.

The design is there in nature, but it's not in anybody's head.

It doesn't have to be.

That's the way evolution works.

Question: Was domestication good for sheep?

It was great for their genetic fitness.

And here I want to remind you of a wonderful point

that Paul MacCready made at TED three years ago.

Here's what he said:

Now, I talked to Paul afterwards -- I wanted to check to find out

They would be puzzled by many things.

This is a million people gathering on the banks of the Ganges in 2001,

There's all sorts of wonderful cases of species which -- in that case --

In other words, we have these hijackers --

Does that ever happen to us?

Yes, it does -- quite wonderfully.

The Arabic word "Islam" means "submission."

The word of God is the seed and the sower of the seed is Christ.

Same idea. Well, not quite.

같은 발상입니다! 뭐 똑같진 않습니다만.

But in fact, Christians, too ...

하지만 사실, 기독교도들도 신에게 굴복했다는 사실을 자랑으로 여깁니다.

glory in the fact that they have surrendered to God.

I'll give you a few quotes.

And I want to turn now, briefly, to talk about that book, which I've read.

You've all got a copy,

And what I want to do now is say a bit about this book

제가 지금 하려는 것은 설계의 관점에서 이 책에 대한 얘기를 하는 겁니다.

from the design standpoint,

because I think it's actually a brilliant book.

정말로 훌륭한 책인 것 같기 때문입니다.

우선, 목적을 봅니다.

First of all, the goal -- and you heard just now what the goal is --

목적이 무엇인지 방금 들으셨죠.

it's to bring purpose to the lives of millions, and he has succeeded.

수백만의 인생에 목적을 가져다주는 것이랍니다. 그리고 성공했죠.

Is it a good goal? In itself, I'm sure we all agree, it is a wonderful goal.

그게 좋은 목적인가요?

그 자체로선, 다들 동의하시겠지만, 훌륭한 목적입니다.

He's absolutely right.

저자는 절대적으로 옳습니다.

There are lots of people out there who don't have purpose in their life,

and bringing purpose to their life is a wonderful goal.

I give him an A+ on this.

I really appreciated that.

For instance, he has an appendix where he explains

his choice of translations of different Bible verses.

The book is clear, vivid, accessible, beautifully formatted.

Just enough repetition.

That's really important.

But I wish it were better.

I have some problems with the book.

And it would just be insincere of me not to address those problems.

제가 그 문제들을 언급하지 않는다면 진심을 다하지 않는 셈이 되겠죠.

I wish he could do this with a revision,

이걸 개정본에 반영했으면 좋겠습니다.

a Mark 2 version of his book.

자기 책의 후속편 같은 것에요.

"The truth will set you free."

"진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라" --

That's what it says in the Bible,

성경 말씀입니다만, 저 역시 따르며 살고 싶은 말입니다.

and it's something that I want to live by, too.

My problem is, some of the bits in it I don't think are true.

저의 문제란, 사실이 아닌 듯한 책 속의 부분들 약간입니다.

Now some of this is a difference of opinion.

그 중 일부는 의견 차이겠습니다만,

And that's not my main complaint, that's worth mentioning.

그건 저의 주된 불만이 아닙니다.

의견 차이는 꼭 언급할 필요까진 없죠.

Here's a passage -- it's very much what he said, anyway:

"If there was no God we would all be accidents,

the result of astronomical random chance in the Universe.

You could stop reading this book because life would have no purpose

and no hope beyond your brief years on Earth."

Now, I just do not believe that.

근데, 저는 그 말을 믿지 않습니다.

By the way, I find -- Homer Groening's film presented a beautiful alternative

to that very claim.

Yes, there is meaning and a reason for right or wrong.

의미도 있고 옳고 그름의 이유도 있지요.

We don't need a belief in God to be good or to have meaning in us.

선해지거나 의미를 가지기 위해 신을 믿을 필요는 없습니다.

But that, as I said, is just a difference of opinion.

하지만 이건 그저 의견 차이일 뿐이죠.

That's not what I'm really worried about.

이건 제가 정말로 걱정하는 바가 아닙니다.

How about this: "God designed this planet's environment

이 구절은 어떻습니까. "하느님께서는 이 행성의 환경을 우리가 살기 딱 맞도록 설계하셨다."

just so we could live in it."

I'm afraid that a lot of people take that sentiment to mean

전 걱정됩니다. 많은 사람들이 이 구절을 두고

that we don't have to do the sorts of things

that Al Gore is trying so hard to get us to do.

I am not happy with that sentiment at all.

And then I find this: "All the evidence available in the biological sciences

Well, that's Michael Denton. He's a creationist.

And here, I think, "Wait a minute." I read this again.

I read it three or four times and I think,

"Is he really endorsing Intelligent Design?

Is he endorsing creationism here?"

And you can't tell.

So I'm sort of thinking, "Well, I don't know,

I don't know if I want to get upset with this yet."

But then I read on, and I read this: "First, Noah had never seen rain,

I wish that sentence weren't in there, because I think it is false.

And I think that thinking this way about the history of the planet,

after we've just been hearing about the history of the planet

over millions of years,

discourages people from scientific understanding.

Now, Rick Warren uses scientific terms

릭 워렌은 과학적 용어들과 과학적 허구 및 정보를

and scientific factoids and information in a very interesting way.

매우 재미있는 방식으로 써먹고 있습니다.

Here's one: "God deliberately shaped and formed you to serve him

이런 걸 보죠. "하느님께서는 당신을 계획적으로 빚고 지으셔서

in a way that makes your ministry unique.

하느님을 섬기는 당신의 직무가 고유한 것이 될 수 있도록 하셨다.

He carefully mixed the DNA cocktail that created you."

하느님께서는 당신을 만들어낸 DNA 칵테일을 조심스레 섞으신 것이다."

I think that's false.

이건 사실이 아니라고 봅니다.

Now, maybe we want to treat it as metaphorical.

어쩌면 이걸 은유적으로 받아들일 수도 있겠습니다만.

Here's another one: "For instance, your brain can store 100 trillion facts.

여기 또 있습니다. "예를 들어, 당신의 뇌는 100조 가지 사실을 저장할 수 있다.

Your mind can handle 15,000 decisions a second."

당신의 정신은 초당 15,000가지 결정을 다룰 수 있다."

Well, it would be interesting to find the interpretation

이걸 받아들일만하게 만들어줄 해석이 있기나 할지 궁금해지는군요.

where I would accept that.

이걸 사실로 여기게 해줄만한 어떤 방법이 있을지도 모르겠습니다만.

There might be some way of treating that as true.

"인류학자들은 찬양이 보편적 충동이라고 해왔다.

"Anthropologists have noted that worship is a universal urge,

hardwired by God into the very fiber of our being --

하느님께서 우리 존재의 조직 속에 깔아두신 것이다.

an inbuilt need to connect with God."

Well, the sense of which I agree with him,

제가 동의하는 부분도 있습니다마는,

except I think it has an evolutionary explanation.

저는 거기에 진화적 설명이 있다고 봅니다.

And what I find deeply troubling in this book

그리고 제가 이 책에서 가장 문제가 된다고 여기는 부분은,

is that he seems to be arguing that if you want to be moral,

마치 여러분이 도덕적인 사람이 되고 싶다면,

if you want to have meaning in your life,

인생의 의미를 가지고 싶다면,

you have to be an Intelligent Designer,

지적 설계론자가 되어야 하고, 자연선택에 의한 진화론을

you have to deny the theory of evolution by natural selection.

부정해야만 한다고 주장하는 듯하다는 것입니다.

And I think, on the contrary,

하지만 저는 반대로, 세상의 문제들을 해결하기 위해서는

that it is very important to solving the world's problems

that we take evolutionary biology seriously.

Whose truth are we going to listen to?

Well, this is from "The Purpose Driven Life":

"The Bible must become the authoritative standard for my life:

and the benchmark I use for evaluating everything."

뭐, 어쩌면 괜찮을 수도 있겠지만. 이러면 무슨 일이 일어날까요?

Well maybe, OK, but what's going to follow from this?

And here's one that does concern me.

저를 걱정하게 만드는 것이 바로 여기 있습니다.

Remember I quoted him before with this line:

아까 제가 인용했던 구절 기억하십니까.

"Surrendered people obey God's word, even if it doesn't make sense."

"굴복한 사람들은 신의 말씀에 복종한다, 심지어 말이 안 되는 말씀이라도."

And that's a problem.

그게 바로 문제입니다.

"Don't ever argue with the Devil.

"악마하고는 논쟁을 벌일 생각도 마라.

He's better at arguing than you are,

having had thousands of years to practice."

Now, Rick Warren didn't invent this clever move.

It's an old move.

It's a very clever adaptation of religions.

It's a wild card for disarming any reasonable criticism.

"You don't like my interpretation?

"나의 해석이 마음에 안 들어?"

You've got a reasonable objection to it?

거기에 대한 합리적 반론이 있다고?

Don't listen, don't listen!

듣지 마, 듣지 마!

That's the Devil speaking."

그건 악마가 이야기하는 거니까."

This discourages the sort of reasoning citizenship

이는 분별 있는 시민의식을 저해합니다.

it seems to me that we want to have.

분별 있는 시민의식은 바람직한 것일 테지요.

I've got one more problem, then I'm through.

또 한 가지 문제가 더 있습니다. 이것만 하고 끝내죠.

And I'd really like to get a response if Rick is able to do it.

when their holy books are telling them,

It seems to me that that's a very problematic ship

I found this sign as I was driving to Maine recently,

in front of a church: "Good without God becomes zero."

Sort of cute.

A very clever little meme.

아주 교묘하고 작은 밈입니다.

I don't believe it and I think this idea, popular as it is --

저는 이 말을 믿지 않습니다. 또한, 이런 발상은, 널리 퍼진 것만큼이나,

not in this guise, but in general --

딱 이것이 아니더라도 일반적으로, 우리가 직면한 주된 문제들 중 하나라고 생각합니다.

is itself one of the main problems that we face.

If you are like me, you know many wonderful, committed, engaged

atheists, agnostics, who are being very good without God.

신 없이도 아주 선한 무신론자, 불가지론자들을 많이 알고 있습니다.

And you also know many religious people who hide behind their sanctity

instead of doing good works.

많은 종교인들 역시 알고 있지요.

So, I wish we could drop this meme.
